Spa Review: GELERATION DAY AT THE DAY SPA, WHITTLEBURY HALL, NORTHAMPTONSHIRE (28.04.11)
Location: The Day Spa, Whittlebury Hall Hotel, Whittlebury, Nr Towcester, Northamptonshire, NN12 8QH. Spa: 0845 400 0002. www.whittleburyhall.co.uk
Facilities: The Day Spa is located at Whittlebury Hall Hotel in the Northamptonshire countryside - just a stone’s throw from the Silverstone racing track – and is approached along a driveway that winds through the grounds. The spa is self-contained, with a separate entrance to the hotel – but a covered walkway makes it easily accessible to day and hotel guests. It offers the ultimate in pampering, boasting an impressive Heat and Ice Experience which invigorates the senses and a vast array of treatments to choose from. The centre piece, however, has to be the Heat and Ice Experience, which includes a hydrotherapy pool with underwater massage jets and swan pipes, heated benches, and ceramic loungers – whilst a series of hot and cold rooms (saunas, steam rooms, experience showers and an ice cave) line the outside of the pool. Upstairs is a relaxing lounge area and also the suite of treatment and relaxation rooms. Day Spa users also have access to the Leisure club facilities next door – if you have the energy for it – with a gym, studio, schedule of classes and a 19 metre pool. The Terrace Café overlooks the pool, where guests can expect a generous and healthy buffet lunch. For the ultimate relaxing experience, you can choose to stay overnight at Whittlebury Hall Hotel. The proximity to Silverstone and affinity with car racing is in clear evidence inside the hotel, with the bar named Silverstone (full of Formula 1 memorabilia) and a choice of restaurants called Astons, Bentleys and Murrays. We had dinner at Astons, which offers a great choice of classic and contemporary dishes, and then enjoyed a few after dinner drinks at the bar. A large buffet breakfast is served at Astons in the morning.
Ambience: As soon as you enter The Day Spa you can feel yourself start to relax, with subdued lighting and soothing background music. Arrivals are staggered in the morning, treatments carefully timetabled, and lunch has several sittings - so although the spa is clearly popular, it never feels like there are many people around. While the heat and ice experience area has more of a bustling feel, with people enjoying the different experiences on offer, there are plenty of quiet spots around the spa to get away from it all – giving a great sense of balance. Staff are friendly and helpful, giving the impression that every guest’s experience is of the upmost importance. If you choose to stay for the night, the hotel offers a formal but relaxed atmosphere, which offers a nice transition from the tranquillity of the spa.
Treatments tested: Included in the GELeration Day package are a 60 minute Jessica GELeration overlay manicure and 60 minute Jessica ZenSpa GELeration overlay pedicure. For hands, nails are shaped, cuticles tidied, and hands exfoliated before base coats, two layers of colour and a top coat are applied. The treatment is concluded with a hand massage. For the pedicure, the treatment starts with a feet and lower leg exfoliation, followed by a luxurious foot bath, which you can choose to be scented with Calming Green Tea, Energising Ginger or Revitalising Citrus. Hard skin is then removed, nails filed, and cuticles tidied - before layers of gel are applied. The treatment finishes with a feet and lower leg massage.
There are plenty of colours to choose from in the Jessica GELeration range – I opted for a sparkly, dusky pink on my hands and a brighter pink for my toes. You can even upgrade to a French manicure or pedicure at a small extra cost.
Not only do GELeration manicures and pedicures offer a long lasting, flawless finish – but your nails dry in seconds, making it the perfect treatment to enjoy at a day spa as you can jump straight back in the Jacuzzi or sauna without having to wait around for nails to dry!
The Day Spa GELeration Day is available from £99 per person, Monday-Friday until 4 September. Quote ‘DAY GEL’ when booking.
Breaking News: THE WINNER OF OUR UNE BEAUTY BLOGGER COMPETITION POSTS HER BLOG ON THE-BEAUTY-PAGES.COM… (28.04.11)
Sponsored Post
Back in January we teamed up with UNE to offer one lucky reader the chance to be a beauty blogger for the day - and part of the prize was for their blog to be published on The-Beauty-Pages.com and read by thousands for readers… The winner was Olivia Demosthenous – and in her post, she tells us about attending her first ever UNE press day!
I've always felt rather intimidated and overwhelmed when walking through a department store or past a makeup counter. I do like them, though - the colours and the scents. When I was invited to the UNE press event on Thursday 14th April, I felt like it was walking through a summer extravaganza; a practical tableau, a glorious mix of summer colours and natural products displayed for the guests’ perusal. As soon as I entered the building and saw the rooms, I was taken aback by the prettiness and wonderfulness of it all. Everything, from the layout of the tables and chairs, to the orchids floating in the huge, beautiful glass bowls, was all so perfect and so calming.
It was a great experience - an experience for trying out new things, and although I still felt overwhelmed by it all, I felt I was in my element. I felt like Alice in Wonderland except I wasn't falling down the rabbit hole; it was more like falling into a luscious and scented flower bed. The first thing I tried, apart from the delicious canapés, was a hand massage, where the masseuse used the new UNE Radiance Reveal Day Moisturising Cream. It went on my skin so smoothly, like an essential oil does. It was so soft and was absorbed into my skin almost immediately and I could feel the natural benefits of the moisture straight away. I learnt that it contains Moringa seeds, which purify the skin by removing any bacteria or toxins.
I was absolutely delighted to be made over for the first time by the professional makeup artist Liz Court. She used the new UNE beauty products - the delectable and palatable new Glimmer Lips Glosses, which glided on amazingly well and come in colours that would suit every woman. Liz put the makeup on so impressively without effort, and because the products matched up, I felt conversely fresh and radiant afterwards (and while the makeup was being applied). I felt detoxified and vivacious; I felt natural but still looked made-up, and this made me feel glamorous. All the makeup was so great and attractive to me.
After I was made-up, I went and browsed around; I couldn't help but try out the Sfumato eye shadow over the top of my makeup. I chose the wonderful Sfumato eye shadow in shade S23 that stood out to me and that I could not resist. It was such a great and fantabulous day. I didn't manage to try everything that I had wanted to, but I got to take a glorious goody bag home with me, filled up with all the makeup and products that were on display throughout the day.
The launch of UNE beauty’s NEW natural skincare range, Fundraising lip balm and Glimmer Lip Gloss’s will be available in selected Boots and Superdrug Stores from May onwards.

TRIED & TESTED: TWEEZERS (28.04.11)
Keep brows groomed and tidy with a pair of professional-quality tweezers. We’ve put six to the test…
SHAVATA HEART TWEEZERS, £21 (www.feelunique.com)
What they say: These fabulous tweezers come in a gorgeous compact with a five mag mirror to help you achieve great brows. Available in pink, white, black, red and teal. A fabulous, fun way to create the perfect arch.
The Results: These tweezers look great and I really wanted to love their performance as much, but I found them really fiddly to use. The bulky base makes it hard to get close to brows without blocking out my view and it was hard to angle them – so I wouldn’t recommend them for precision plucking! However, I did love the fact that their container boasts a 5 x mirror, which is really handy – especially if you carry tweezers with you during the day or when travelling. I also think they’d make a sweet gift for beauty junkies.
Best for: Use on the go
TWEEZERMAN SLANT TWEEZER IN NEON PINK, £19.99 (www.sallyexpress.com)
What they say: Perfectly aligned hand-finished tips that grab the hair everytime. Award Winning Slant - choice of make-up artists, celebrities and beauty professionals for over 25 years.
The Results: I thought the tweezers I’d been using for the past few years were good – but these are something special! They are so easy to use, grabbing every single hair (no matter how short) and removing it in a matter of seconds. I love the colour, which makes it easy to find in the depths of my makeup bag - but if you aren’t so keen on pink, you can opt for the stainless steel version. They are expensive though and spending this much money on tweezers would be hard for me – but I definitely think they are worth the investment.
Best for: Performance
MAXFACTOR SLANT END TWEEZERS, £8.68 (www.boots.com)
What they say: Especially developed by Max Factor these precision slant end tweezers will keep brows beautifully shaped.
The Results: It’s a good price and the packaging looks professional and stylish. The matte, black tweezers are pretty classic in shape, with fairly wide, slanted ends. The wideness made it quite hard to grip tiny hairs, so they are best suited to general tidy-ups, rather than full reshapes. I don’t think I’d swap my regular tweezers to these in a hurry – but if you are on a budget, they will work well for everyday use.
Best for: Everyday use.
MISTER MASCARA GIRL TWEEZERS, £9.10 (www.mistermascara.com)
What they say: Stick out from the crowd! These Mini Mai tweezers are not only insanely cute but are a beauty must have! Character slant tweezers with precision ground tips for expert grip. Suction cup holder sticks to any smooth surface - so you'll never misplace them
The Results: I love these tweezers! The design is fun, colourful, and quirky – and the suction cup holder is an inspired idea! I usually struggle to find my tweezers when I need them, so I have now attached them to my dressing table mirror so they are always at hand! I’m really impressed by the price too – they are professional quality and pick up every single hair, no matter how fine or short. I really recommend them.
Best for: Fun design
COWSHED WHITE TWEEZERS, £15 (www.cowshedonline.com)
What they say: These Cowshed tweezers are hand-finished and manufactured from high grade stainless steel designed with a slanted tip for ease of use.
The Results: I’m a big fan of the brand Cowshed – but as they’re renowned for their bath and bodycare, I didn’t expect great things from their tweezers. I was very pleased to be proved wrong… Not only do they look great with their monochrome floral design, but the surface is non-slip so they were very easy to grip and pluck. The slanted ends are fairly short, which makes it equally easy to grab long hairs for a reshape – or shorter hairs for a general tidy-up. They might not be the cheapest to buy, but I’d recommend the investment.
Best for: Precision plucking
THE BODY SHOP SLANTED TWEEZERS, £4.50 (www.thebodyshop.co.uk)
What they say: A set of high-performance full-size tweezers with perfectly aligned ultra-precise tips for beautiful brows in an instant!
The Results: They might not be very exciting in their design (not a priority as far as I’m concerned when it comes to tweezers!) but they are sleek, simple, and surprisingly lightweight. They are easy to maneuver and work efficiently at removing larger hairs, but I found them quite ineffective at removing the shorter, difficult-to-get hairs, which was disappointing. I don’t think I’d swap to these on an everyday basis – but they’ll be useful as a spare pair to leave at my boyfriend’s flat. It’s a great budget price too.
Best for: Budget Buy
Feature: BEST OF BRITISH (28.04.11)
As excitement surrounding the Royal Wedding reaches fever pitch, we’ve come over all patriotic and rounded up our Best of British Beauty for pampering that’s fit for a queen!
SKINCARE
A flawless English Rose complexion is the starting point for all hopeful beauty queens - and it’s achievable too, even if princess-style treatments are out of your price range.
Celebrity facialist and founder of Heaven Health & Beauty, Deborah Mitchell has been reported as treating key members of the Royal family. Her range of treatments and natural products are described as being the knife-free alternative to a face lift, with her cult Bee Venom Face Mask, £55 for 50ml (www.heavenbydeborahmitchell.co.uk) promising a youthful, plumped effect. For brides-to-be, she recommends her brand-new SOS Skin Oil, which contains calendula oil, beta carotene and vitamins A & B to help calm stressed skin.
If your preference is for natural beauty, it’s also worth checking out The Organic Pharmacy. Born out of a single shop in Kate Middleton’s old neighbourhood of Chelsea’s King’s Road in 2002, the brand has quickly gained a celebrity following, counting A-listers such as Kylie Minogue as fans. One of the bestselling products is Carrot Butter Cleanser, £32.95 for 70ml (www.theorganicpharmacy.com) a rich balm that dissolves makeup to leave skin soft and smooth.
If you’re taking advantage of the extra day off to head away, be sure to travel light by packing multi-purpose products. Don’t leave home without a tin of Rose & Co. Rose Petal Salve, £5 (www.houseoffraser.co.uk), which keeps lips kissable and soothes dry patches. The product was originally made on a Yorkshire kitchen stovetop before the vintage-inspired brand expanded.
Steamcream is always presented in tins with fun designs and the Freedom & Discipline version, £10.50 for 75g (www.feelunique.com) is suitably patriotic. Ideal for sensitive skin, the cream can be used on face, body and hands, making it the perfect multi-purpose option for long weekend travel.
Finally, combining the best of British beauty with home-grown design talent, Elemis and Temperley have teamed up to create a limited edition Safari Traveller Washbag, £79 (John Lewis nationwide) filled with favourites from the spa brand, in aid of the Mothers4Children charity. Featuring an on-trend leopard print design, the washbag hints at African exoticism and is the perfect reminder of the setting for the couple’s engagement, on safari in Kenya.
BATH & SHOWER
Short on time? Even a daily bath or shower can be transformed into an indulgent experience when you have the right products to hand...
For showers, one of Britain’s most popular beauty brands Molton Brown offers Ambrusca Cleansing Shower Oil, £22.50 for 200ml (www.beautyexpert.co.uk), which contains the wonder ingredient Moroccan Argan oil to leave skin conditioned. Alternatively, try Tisserand Renewing Cream Body Wash in Wild Rose and Lemon Leaf, £7.40 for 175ml (www.tisserand.com), which is both refreshing for morning use and nourishing, due to the inclusion of organic shea butter.
Want a collectable without creeping into novelty tea-towel territory? Your beauty habit offers the perfect outlet as Crabtree & Evelyn have created a limited edition Heritage Soap Gift Box, £10 (www.crabtree-evelyn.co.uk), which means you can embrace the festive spirit without breaking the bank. The set contains two luxurious triple milled soaps but by far the best aspect is that a portion of the sales proceeds will be donated to the Royal Wedding Charity Fund, set up by the couple in lieu of a gift list to recognise a selection of causes close to their hearts.
Prefer bathing? If you need an excuse to try Aromatherapy Associates’ award-winning Bath & Shower Oils, there’s no better time to indulge… The brand has launched Little Luxuries, £12 (www.aromatherapyassociates.com) - an adorable starter set that introduces three of their most popular oils. There’s just enough for one usage of each, so that you can find your favourite before investing in the full size - the Revive oil is best reserved for any bank holiday over-indulgence morning-afters!
In a double celebration of both the Royal Wedding and their founders receiving OBE medals, Lush have re-introduced a special Street Party edition of their signature Bath Ballistic, £2.95 (www.lush.co.uk), originally created to commemorate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, complete with confetti and a paper Union Jack flag. Alternatively, pick up one of their classic Big Blue Bath Ballistics, £2.99 (as before), and let your imagination run wild with thoughts of that ring.
BODY
After bathing, be sure to care for your skin in order to maintain a princess-worthy peaches-and-cream complexion.
Celebrate with a special edition from a classic brand… British high street favourite, The Body Shop have taken the famous English institution of strawberries & cream as inspiration and repackaged their bestselling Strawberry Body Butter, £12.50 (www.thebodyshop.co.uk) in a Union Jack design for the national holiday.
Neal’s Yard Remedies have released a limited edition Royal Romance Rose & Pomegranate Massage Oil, £15.50 for 100ml (www.nealsyardremedies.com) in honour of the couple. It’s the perfect treat if you’re planning a romantic getaway to coincide with the long weekend.
Alternatively, to truly heat things up, try Oskia Massage Candle, £34.50 (www.oskiaskincare.com), which boasts such an intoxicating rose scent and skin caring ingredients that you may not want to share it.
Hoping for an engagement ring of your own? Ensure your hands are kept in tip-top shape using the award winning Balance Me Super Moisturising Hand Cream, £14.25 for 100ml (www.balanceme.co.uk). If you prefer a more traditional fragrance, check out The Royal Collection Buckingham Palace Royal Hyacinth Luxury Hand Lotion, £9 for 300ml (www.feelunique.com), which is ideal to place in the bathroom if you’re expecting guests for the long weekend and is delicately scented with hyacinth, said to be one of the Queen’s favourite flowers.
HAIRCARE
Often referred to as “supermodel hair”, Kate Middleton’s mane is perhaps her greatest physical asset. Whilst the pressures of Royal life might mean that most wouldn’t want to swap places with her in marrying Prince William, beauty addicts everywhere are lusting after her luscious locks.
The Middleton family have visited celebrity crimper Richard Ward’s salon (www.richardward.com) in Chelsea for years – and the team have become Kate’s choice of stylist for key occasions including the engagement announcement and the wedding day itself. Whether the whispers that she adores salon brand Kerastase are true, one thing’s for sure - her hair is in fantastic condition. The first step in recreating the look is to ensure the health of your hair. Introduce a nourishing hair oil into your regime such as Gielly Green Argan Rescue Treatment, £19.50 for 50ml (www.giellygreen.co.uk) or set aside time for an occasional treatment mask. Why not follow in the footsteps of Hollywood Royalty, Audrey Hepburn and try Philip Kingsley’s Elasticizer, £25.50 for 150ml (www.philipkingsley.com); the world’s first pre-shampoo conditioning treatment, which revitalises hair without weighing down.
To recreate Kate's enviable volume without a team of professionals, invest in a dry shampoo, such as patriotically-packaged Batiste Dry Shampoo Brit, £2.09 (Superdrug Nationwide). The cool new variant was launched to celebrate the British brand’s 30th birthday – and with a quick springs, it reinjects locks with volume and texture.
Those with coloured hair should look no further than Jo Hansford (www.johansford.com), who is regarded as one of the best in the business. She cares for the Duchess of Cornwall’s hair and will be on hand as stylist for the special day. Whilst a personal appointment may be out of reach, the Jo Hansford range of products – specially developed to care for coloured hair – are worth a look, particularly Protect & Shine Leave-in Conditioner, £17, to maintain vibrancy.
MAKEUP
For a regal appearance, ensure that your look is immaculate and well groomed – but stay well within the bounds of a conservative, natural look.
Inspired by the new addition to our Royal family, Stargazer have created an exclusive Princess Lipstick collection, £7.50 (www.stargazer-products.com) comprising pretty pinks and a bold red. Each of the four lipsticks has been named based on headlines about the couple’s romance, such as “See Through Dress”, “Kensington Blowdry”, “Catwalk Cathedral” and “The Lady’s Been Waiting”.
Another wallet friendly brand that is well worth checking out is Rimmel London (Boots Nationwide), whose Coral Queen and Your Majesty Nail Polishes are both wearable, fun shades for the bank holiday and beyond.
Manicurist to the stars, Andrea Fulerton has created two very special nail colours inspired by clients the Princesses of York. Choose from Beatrice, a regal purple or Eugenie, £5.10 each (Superdrug nationwide), a young take on royal blue.
To add a rock and roll edge to your majestic mani, why not add Andrea Fulerton’s English Rose & Crown Tattoos, £2.03 (as before). For a literal take on the celebrations, Barry M have a range of patriotic red, white and blue nail colours, £2.99 each (www.barrym.com).
FRAGRANCE
Choosing a fragrance for your special day is arguably as important as deciding upon a dress. Whilst onlookers are less likely to comment upon your perfume, the scent will evoke personal memories for years to come. Kate was rumoured to favour Christian Dior’s Dune whilst at university in St. Andrews, but if she’s looking for something new for 29th April, there’s no shortage of options.
Royal warrant holders, Floris have updated the fragrance they created to celebrate the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana in honour of William and Kate’s nuptials. The limited edition Wedding Bouquet, £90 for 100ml (www.florislondon.com), has been given a modern twist with the inclusion of white florals such as jasmine and lily of the valley.
Jo Malone have also been inspired by florals in their suggested fragrance for the Royal Wedding, Orange Blossom Cologne, £68 for 100ml (www.jomalone.com.uk). The flower is symbolic of love, commitment and fertility, making it one of the brand’s most popular wedding scents.
If Rock Royalty is more appealing, try Stella McCartney’s Sheer Stella, £38 for 100ml (counters nationwide) a limited edition twist on her signature fragrance for the new season. Together with crisp apple and frosted lemon, the fragrance comprises organically grown Persian rose.
Alternatively, look to the Grand Dame of British fashion, Vivienne Westwood whose latest fragrance, Naughty Alice, £53 for 50ml EDP (www.escentual.com), is a wearable yet sensual blend of pink pepper, rose, violet and ylang ylang.
Blog: KRISTY GOODGER – FOUNDER OF ELEMENTAL HERBOLOGY – BLOGS ABOUT SPRING SKINCARE (28.04.11)
I spent the whole weekend perched in the park with my family on picnic blanket soaking up the spring sunshine. It is such a wonderful time of the year - I can literally feel my body transforming as the sun spreads its magic.
Spring is also a time that heralds a period of increasing universal energy when our ‘Yang’ energy starts to increase. Yang energy is a time of more outward and mobile energy, hence why we are more energetic and sociable in spring and summer. It is not uncommon to have gone from being comatose on the couch every weekend to putting on your trainers and hitting the park and craving completely different foods as we shift from more hearty stews and slow cooked meat and vegetables to lighter, cooling foods such as fish and salads.
In keeping with the harmony of the seasons your skin also requires different actives as you transition from winter to spring.
Now is definitely the time to change from an oil-based cleanser to a refreshing foaming cleanser. I would really recommend our Cool and Clear Facial Cleanser - it uses an SLS-free foaming agent with apple serum, lavender flower and aloe to help provide a deep cleanse while also leaving the skin feeling balanced and nourished.
If you haven’t been shedding dead skin cells throughout winter than I really recommend exfoliating at least 1-2 times a week with Facial Glow Radiance Peel. It combines Apple Serum, Vitamin C, Kombuchka and lots of other wonderful natural ingredients to improve the skin’s texture and tone, creating a healthy and glowing complexion. Not only will this brighten your complexion but it will also help stimulate new cell renewal and give you that healthy summer glow.
After ‘tending to the soil’ so to speak, boost radiance by applying daily a serum rich in proteins, vitamins and anti-oxidants. Cell Food Protection and Repair Facial Serum helps reverse the effects of exposure to the wind and cold by infusing the skin with a mega dose of radiance promoting ingredients such as Fresh Strawberry Cells and Acerola Fruit which is extremely rich in Vitamin C to brighten up the complexion, , Royal Jelly which contains high levels of Vitamin A,C,D,E and 18 amino acids to support new collagen and elastin synthesis, Pomegranate with its excellent moisturising properties is great for dull, parched skin, Kombuchka which has illustrated a remarkable improvement in the skins texture, while visibly reducing pigmentation and Pearl Extract used by traditional Chinese medicine to slow down ageing by improving the skins metabolism, while promoting a healthy glow.
In Australia avocado on Vegemite is a breakfast staple and I literally can never get enough of avocadoes. Even my husband who grew up in Serbia and was a prosciutto and cheese man is now a serious convert. You can really see a visible difference in the skin when we feast on avocados coupled with macadamia nuts and oily fish which all have such a nourishing impact on the skin. Also a summer time manta is drink at least 8 glasses of water per day, infused with lemon or cucumber – even better!
Wishing you a beautiful spring

Editor’s Letter (29.04.11)
Noticed that your favourite weekly email (that’s us, of course) hit your inbox a day early this week? We usually go live with fresh new content every Friday morning – but tomorrow, I expect you all to be glued to your television screens all day. I’m a big Royalist and I can’t wait to see Kate emerge from her carriage in her hotly-anticipated dress (please let it be McQueen!) I do, however, refuse to refer to the day as ‘The Wedding of the Century’ as that clearly was last December when I got wed in the snow… Still, I will be waving my Union Jack and sipping my English Breakfast Tea with gusto tomorrow to wish the happy couple a long, happy, gold-plated marriage. And to get you in the mood, I have selected my top five patriotic beauty buys… Rule Britannia!
The Perfume Shop. These Prince and Princess fragrances (£10 each) are so kitch that they are cool… Encased in ‘his and hers’ doll shaped bottles, the scents have been created to match the Royal couple’s personalities – “Princess” boasting notes of green leaves, lemon, and white flowers, along with sophisticated dashes of cloves and musk; and “Prince” a blend of green mandarin, citrus and ginger, with a warm heart of wild roses, cedar and nutmeg. www.theperfumeshop.com
Leighton Denny. Wherever you are watching the Royal Wedding, your nails should be painted red, white, and blue – I’m even considering an attempt at tiny Union Jacks on mine (I can’t promise it will be successful, mind…) This fabulously British ‘Royal Collection’ (£35.10) by nail guru Leighton Debby is perfect for the job. The colours are vivid, glossy, and long-lasting – so perfect for creating a royal wave worthy of the big day. I love the packaging too! www.feelunique.com
Lush. Heading to a street party tomorrow? If you didn’t receive an invite, do not despair – as you can bring the party to your bathroom with Lush’s Limited Edition Street Party Bath Ballistic (complete with tiny Union Jacks and confetti hearts). It boasts the deep, unique scent combination of lavender and litsea cubeba to get you in the mood for a party – and afterwards, your confetti-strewn bath will no doubt resemble London streets on Saturday morning (there’s always a little clearing up to do after every party, after all). www.lush.co.uk
Lanvin. Got wedding envy and want to drop an almighty hint to the man in your life? Treat yourself to a bottle of Lavin’s Marry Me! (£61) and leave it in a prominent position – you never know, it may inspire the moment you have been dreaming of… If he remains oblivious, the consolation will be a stunning, romantic scent with notes of Tunisian bitter orange, sensuous jasmine, sweet peach, and magnolia. It’s absolutely perfect for summer. 0845 7697072
Princess Catherine Doll. I couldn’t resist signing off without giving you a glimpse of the Princess Catherine doll (£34.95) currently on sale at Hamleys and online at Arklu.com. I’m not a fan of dolls – or tacky Royal Wedding souvenirs as it happens – but I have to make an exception for this, as it combines the efforts of seven British fashion and design leaders who have dressed and accessorised her (including Aspinal of London and Beatrix Ong). Better still, £1 from each purchase will go to Help the Heroes. www.arklu.com
Blog: HENRIETTA NORTON – NUTRITIONIST FOR HEALTHSPAN NURTURE – SHOWS US HOW TO FEED SKIN FROM WITHIN (22.04.11)
As a nutritionist I cannot underestimate the importance of an approach that ‘nourishes from within’ and many people working in the natural health field would agree that the condition of a person’s skin can be a key indicator of their inner health. Scientific investigation has shown us that hundreds of compounds exist in natural foods that have health promoting properties and what we eat is equally, if not more, important than what we don’t eat.
What causes skin damage?
Oxidation, also known as free-radical damage, accounts for the majority of damage to skin. This damage is accelerated by sun exposure and smoking, which are heavy sources of free-radicals.
How can your diet help to protect your skin?
Antioxidants: You can counter oxidation damage by increasing your intake of antioxidants, such as vitamins A, C, and E. Incorporate green or white tea into your daily diet and increase your consumption by including dried fruit as snacks, eating warming vegetable soup at lunchtime, or adding fruit compote to your morning yogurt. Eating vitamin C rich foods such as broccoli, cabbage, and blackcurrant builds protective collagen in skin. The ‘carotene’ group is also showing particular promise for skin protection. As well as beta-carotene, this family includes lycopene, from tomatoes, lutein and zeaxanthine which are found in spinach and other green vegetables.
Essential fatty acids: Skin cell membranes need to stay flexible – and for this, they also need the right fats in the diet. A great help are the omega-3 oils found in oily fish such as mackerel, sardines, fresh tuna and salmon, walnuts, pumpkin seeds and flax seeds. Omega-3s also reduce the inflammation and itchiness of skin that is typical of eczema or poor wound healing and can reduce or prevent the process of ‘cross-linking’ in the skin that can lead to skin appearing toughened and leathery. Try using walnut or flax oil for salad dressings or ground nuts and seeds sprinkled onto yoghurt or porridge. If you are a fish eater, aim for three portions of oily fish a week.
Fluids: Remember to drink plenty of water to help keep skin hydrated. Too much alcohol and coffee can dehydrate and leave the skin looking dry and tired.
Many of the above mentioned foods also contain zinc and selenium, two important minerals for vibrant skin.
Sometimes, despite best intentions, we can all fall short of a truly healthy diet. If this rings true for you, and you want to optimize your skincare routine then it’s advisable to take a skin supporting supplement such as the range offered by Healthspan nurture (www.healthspannurture.co.uk).
Henrietta is an experienced nutritional therapist and media health consultant, working with a range of clients from professional athletes, to private clients in Harley Street. She is a registered member of the British Association of Nutritional Therapists and the Guild of Health Writers.
TRIED & TESTED: BRONZERS (22.04.11)
Give your complexion a sun-kissed glow for spring with a sweep of bronzing powder. We’ve put six to the test…
CLINIQUE ALMOST BRONZER SPF15, £22 (www.clinique.co.uk)
What they say: Almost Bronzer SPF 15 comprises two shades of bronze pressed side by side in the same convenient compact. Suitable for all skin types, the oil-free, long-wearing formula can create a range of looks from a sheer, sunkissed glow to a more pronounced bronze.
The Results: As soon as I opened this compact I knew I would love it – the brightly coloured pouch evokes feelings of summer and the bronzer inside didn’t disappoint. It smells fantastic and I love the two-tone effect - it’s like having two products for the price of one. I’ve been applying the light bronzer for daytime and mixing the two together for a more glamorous look in the evenings. The compact fits neatly in my handbag and is great for on the go use. Just beware of using the darker tone on its own as it made me look a little over-bronzed!
Best for: On-the-go glow
ORIGINS MULTI-GRAIN BRONZER, £16 (www.origins.co.uk)
What they say: A nutritious combination of Oats, Tapioca, Soy, Rice Flour, Wheat Germ and Barley immediately bonds with skin to help smooth and nourish. Silica absorbs excess oil. A potent antioxidant complex of Pomegranate, Goji Berry and Vitamins C and E help protect against potentially damaging free radicals. Skin-enhancing mineral pigments help provide the perfect amount of bronzed colour and buildable coverage while Mica leaves a subtle, summery glow.
The Results: I have a very oily T-zone and am always searching for products that can help to keep my skin look matte throughout the day. This pot of bronzer worked really well – and I would definitely recommend it to people with similar skin. It absorbed the oil in my skin well and delivered great, natural-looking bronze coverage. The consistency is quite thick, so it stays in place rather than rubbing or sweating off. I only applied it once at the start of the day and still looked as tanned and healthy at the end. Plus it’s full of great ingredients to keep my skin happy!
Best for: Absorbing excess oil
YSL TERRE SAHARIENNE, £31 (Department Stores Nationwide)
What they say: Paying homage to the iconic safari look, Yves Saint Laurent invites you to explore the exotic. Each brush stroke kisses the complexion with a natural sunny look. Sun Radiance Pigments capture and reflect light and diffuse a golden reflection in every direction, so your complexion looks luminous from any angle.
The Results: You know you’re in for a treat when your makeup comes in a mini dust bag! This bronzer is very stylish and elegant, with the YSL logo imprinted in the light diffusing powder. I already had a tan when I used it, but it did a great job of accentuating my cheekbones and gave me a really natural sun-swept look – like I’d been lazing on a beach all day. My only reservation is the price, I’m used to paying half the price for my bronzers – but I’m going to have to get used to it, as I don’t think I can live without it now!
Best for: Luxury buy
BOBBI BROWN BRONZING POWDER, £24 (www.bobbibrown.co.uk)
What they say: Formulated for all skin types, this bronzer has just the right mix of red and brown – the colours you’d find in a true tan – for a totally natural-looking, sun-kissed glow. The lightweight mica-free powder applies smoothly and evenly, feels ultra-comfortable on skin. And while it looks good, it also does good – helping protect against the harmful effects of the environment with antioxidant Vitamin E.
The Results: I rarely wear blusher or bronzer as I have a really fair complexion, so I wasn’t sure this would work for me. I’m pleased to report that I was pleasantly surprised, as it made my whole complexion appear radiant. I applied it directly to my cheekbones and the result was a warm dewy glow that made me look healthy and fresh-faced. I was thrilled that the bronzer is so lightweight - I barely felt like I was wearing any makeup, which suits me perfectly. I also like the fact this product contains Vitamin E, as I like to feel I’m protecting my skin rather than clogging it with makeup.
Best for: Lightweight feel
BENEFIT ONE HOT MINUTE, £23.50 (www.benefitcosmetics.co.uk)
What they say: Look sexy in seconds! For a gorgeous "gaze at me glow" sweep this loose rose-gold finishing powder over your complexion & décolleté. The accompanying custom brush dusts on the perfect amount of powder for a beautiful sheen.
The Results: The colourful packaging of this powder is typically Benefit – it’s bright, young, and fun. I usually opt for compact powder, but this bronzer is loose – thankfully Benefit have included a precision brush, so there’s no need to carry one around with you. I was pretty sure the loose powder was going to go all over my clothes when I first tested it – but it was pretty mess-free to use. Just be careful to only apply a small amount to your brush prior to application, otherwise it tends to go all over your face rather than in the area you’re aiming for! I was pleased with the result - it made my skin shimmer and glow in the light and I will definitely continue using it.
Best for: A natural glow
MAC BRONZING POWDER, £17.50 (www.maccosmetics.co.uk)
What they say: A lightly frosted, tinted powder that gives skin sheer, natural colour effects and highlights. Ideal for enhancing a skin tone or to accent or strengthen a tan. Formulated to provide a smooth, even application on all skin types.
The Results: From the sleek black packaging, to the ideal compact size, this product looks great and performs brilliantly. I’ve tried many bronzers in the past, but this is the first that has given me a warm natural glow that even my oily t-zone couldn’t shine through. It camouflages imperfections and made my skin appear flawless. It’s great value for money too, as you only need a little to go a long way. I’ve already recommended this to all my friends. I really can’t fault it.

Feature: SIX OF THE BEST SPRING LAUNCHES (22.04.11)
Spring has sprung – and with it comes a series of innovative new beauty launches. This week, we’ve taken a look at six of the most exciting arrivals on the beauty block.
THE NEW INNOVATIVE MASCARA
The Product: Bourjois Volume Fast & Perfect Mascara, £11.99 (Boots, Superdrug and ASOS).
You can blame it on Lady Gaga and Cheryl Cole – but there’s nothing skinny about lashes this spring... Pumped up lashes are a positive must-have, giving some bite to the sugar-sweet trend for candy-coloured eye makeup.
Bourjois new Volume Fast & Perfect Mascara has arrived at the perfect time – and it’s the quickest way to achieve that coveted false eyelash effect. The secret is in the all-new auto rotating brush. It not only catches all the lashes as it twirls, but it also separates as it coats, covering lashes in rich colour from root to tip in one single stroke. Lashes boast impressive volume in just 30 seconds flat.
Just as importantly, the new volumising formula is suitable even for sensitive eyes, containing natural waxes, vitamin E and a jojoba oil.
THE NEW NAIL PAINT
The Product: Barry M Instant Nail Effects Nail Paint, £3.99 each (www.barrym.com).
Remember how much fun you had as a teenager painting individual nails a different colour and playing with nail stickers before a big night out? Well nail art just got all grown up and is back with a bang for spring…
As seen on catwalks at New York Fashion Week, nails boasted speckles, stripes and abstract designs to compliment fashion’s hot floral theme – whilst always on-trend model Alexa Chung rocked tiny palm trees stencilled onto each Tippex-white nail.
The easiest route to this season’s fun look is with Barry M’s brilliant new Instant Nail Effects Nail Paint, which transforms nails in seconds. The latest innovation from the UK’s number one fashion cosmetics company may look like ordinary polish – but it is in fact a little bottle of magic! Instant Nail Effects, whose fans already include Pixie Lott and The Saturdays, cracks before your eyes to create a different patterned effect every time you paint your nails. Paint over your base colour and watch in awe as stripes and patterns appear in seconds.
The product is available in three shades - Pink Fizz, White Frost, and Blue Print – and can be layered over different base colours to create endless effects.
THE NEW DEWY SKIN CREAM
The Product: DHC’s Platinum Silver Nanocolloid Cream, £17 (www.dhcuk.co.uk)
Forget matte – as according to New York’s king of skin James Kaliardos, dewy complexions are set to be the face of the season ahead.
The first step to glowing skin is using the right moisturiser – and our favourite has to be Japanese beauty brand DHC’s new Platinum Silver Nanocolloid Cream, formulated with two precious metals: silver that has powerful healing and anti-bacterial properties and platinum that speeds up cell repair and improves the skin’s ability to absorb nourishing minerals. It’s perfect for dehydrated complexions in need of a seasonal boost.
But what makes the cream quite so savvy is the use of nanotechnology, which is the science of reducing key ingredients into super tiny size to increase the delivery and performance of the ingredients: one nanometer equals one millionth of a millimetre! Shrinking the ingredients into microscopic particles provides a smooth, lightweight texture that absorbs easily into the skin and works twice as fast to help fight fine lines and signs of discolouration. It promises to give skin back its glow in a matter of days!
THE NEW CURL-PERFECTING MOUSSE
The Product: TRESemme Curl Defining Mousse, £4.38 (Supermarkets Nationwide).
This spring, hair’s gone retro… 70’s-style waves, curls, and crimps graced the catwalks at Sonia Rykiel and John Richmond - and the red carpet welcomed curl-blessed beauties such as Taylor Swift, Rihanna and Sarah Jessica Parker.
Whether you are blessed with natural curls or need to use super size rollers to create lift and movement, TRESemme’s new Curl Defining Mousse will help you achieve the look… Providing superb curl definition, even in humid conditions, the salon-quality mousse smoothes and adds long-lasting shape to curls and waves. It contains clever conditioning ingredients to protect against style damage and make hair feel super-touchable hair all day long.
For an instant curl freshening trick, try top stylist Matthew Curtis tip: “Rub a little mousse through hands and use your fingers to create texture marks as you pull them through hair to boost curls and give hair extra lift.”
THE NEW MUST-HAVE TANNING RANGE
The Product: Sun-Believable Expert Tan, from £18 (www.sun-believable.com)
The double-dipped tans of last summer are so over… This season, tans should look beautifully sun-kissed, rather than sun-drenched – a trend shown off at House of Holland’s Spring/Summer 2011 show.
And the fastest way to achieve the look is the new Sun-Believable Expert Tan range. The brainchild of tan king James Harknett and beauty guru Leighton Denny, the products are already firm favourites with Myleene Klass and Geri Halliwell. The range boasts the latest tanning technology that guarantees perfect results every time and high-grade organic ingredients including coconut oil that makes it super-kind to skin.
You’ll love it because it’s virtually odourless and the instant drying formula has a guide colour that makes it easy to apply. Sun Believable develops in 2 to 4 hours to give colour that lasts for up to 10 days without streaking or flaking.
There are three products in the range; Sun-Believable SCRUB ME Body Exfoliator to prep skin for tanning; Sun Believable TAN ME Self Tan Mousse and Mitt, a quick drying mousse available in Medium and Dark; and Sun-Believable CREAM ME Body Moisturiser with vitamin E that helps prolong your tan.
THE NEW FRAGRANCE
The Product: DKNY Summer, £33 (www.theperfumeshop.com)
OK, so we’re cheating a little with Donna Karan’s new summer fragrance available this spring - but the fruity floral scent was just too good to leave out of our hit list…
Taking inspiration from the transformation of New York City as summer takes hold: (think cyclists and dog-walkers in Central park, the beauty of the Hudson river, flirty sundresses worn by native New Yorkers, bright blue sky set against sparkling skyscrapers, and splashes of colour wherever you turn) DKNY’S summer scent instantly passes the energy and buzz of the big city to the lucky wearer (whether you are in Manhattan or Clacton-on-Sea).
It’s an ultra feminine fragrance. We love the heart of jasmine petals and sunny magnolia, topped off with exotic lychee that gives the fragrance long-lasting warmth.
And if top perfumer Roja Dove is right in believing that a fabulous bottle will influence more than half of us to choose a scent before we even sniff it, then DKNY’s Summer - decanted into an iconic skyscraper bottle with a sunny seersucker striped DKNY logo - will have you diving for the shelves…
Treatment Review: TREAT ME LIKE A PRINCESS PACKAGE, HOB HAIRDRESSING (22.04.11)
What it promises: As Kate Middleton and Prince William get set to wed this April, HOB Salons are giving you the chance to experience your own royal reward with their very own majestic pamper package. This regal offer is available to any client who books a cut and colour package service (Monday - Wednesday) throughout the month of April and upon doing so, you will be gifted with a complimentary conditioning treatment, a head massage, and a gift bag with mini SP products. And that's not all… This package will also give you a £25 credit towards your next cut and colour so you can continue the celebrations…
What happens: There are HOB salons all over the country, but I chose to visit the Camden branch. The salon is situated just a stone’s throw from the eclectic, colourful hues of Camden market – but inside, it feels like another world. The stylish monotone palette, mixed with splashes of coffee-coloured wood and butter-soft black leather, feels cool and spacious – and the ambience is buzzing, but not hectic. On arrival, I was met by colourist David and stylish Ian, who sat with me for 10 minutes to discuss how I wanted my hair to look. After the colour was applied – we decided on dark roots, lighter at the ends – I sat under a heat lamp sipping a glass of wine and flicking through the latest issue of Vogue. Heaven. When it was time to remove the colour, I was taken for a conditioning treatment and a head massage that felt so delicious it nearly put me to sleep. The appointment was concluded by a hair cut and blow-dry – and on completion, I strutted out on the streets of Camden with a style fit for a (future) queen…
The Results: This is a fantastic treatment to opt for before a big weekend. My hair looked better than I’d ever seen it – and throughout the treatment, both David and Ian gave me hints and tips about how to care for my hair and looks to try out when I’m feeling braver. I didn’t want the pampering to come to an end – but this is the gift that keeps giving, as when I left I was presented with a goody bag filled with products that had just been used on my hair AND a voucher for £25 off my next cut and colour! All those in need of a little Easter indulgence should make an appointment. Now!
Price: Varies depending on the level of stylist you have. Contact the salon for details.
Location: Visit www.hobsalons.com to locate your nearest salon.

Editor’s Letter (22.04.11)
Recent figures suggest that we’re spending £705million a year on perfume – that’s £67million more than two years ago. In a recession, that’s quite an impressive figure – so why the jump? I’m a big fan of fragrance, so it seems obvious to me – it makes us feel happy. In the same way that scents like fresh roses, cut grass, and freshly brewed coffee bring a smile to our faces, so does a quick spritz of our favourite perfume. And when compared to the latest designer launches in clothing and footwear, it’s also really great value for money. So why not treat yourself to a bottle this Easter? And if your dressing table just can’t take the weight of another bottle (I know the feeling), take your pick from my seasonal top five below…
Lush. Kids – and big kids like me – would be thrilled to receive an Easter gift tied in Lush’s fabulous Bunny Knot Wrap (£2.50). You can choose what goes inside, whether that’s a fizzing bath ballistic, slab of deliciously-scented soap, or any of Lush’s other irresistible offerings (all at an extra cost, of course). It might be slightly more expensive than grabbing a sheet of wrapping paper, but lets be honest, it’s miles more exciting… And if you need some inspiration for what to fill it with, try the Donkey Oatey (£1.95), Fluffy Egg (£2.95) or Hippy Chick (£1.90) Bath Ballistics. www.lush.co.uk
Czech & Speake. Quite on the other end of the price spectrum, this Dark Rose Solid Perfume (£100) would make a unique and very special Easter gift for somebody special. The luxe egg-shaped container is lined with gold leaf, whilst the perfume itself (a solid beeswax and almond oil blend) has top notes of Saffron and Bulgarian Rose; middle notes of Patchouli, Sandalwood and Oudh, and Base Notes of White Musk and Liquid Amber. Rich, indulgent, and unique – just the way I like my perfumes! http://www.czechandspeake.com/
Angel. When it comes to chocolate-scented beauty products, Thierry Mugler was the trendsetter with its iconic scent Angel. It was quite the rebel when it was first launched in 1992, being the first scent to leave out floral notes in favour of sweeter notes, including chocolate. It now has a huge fan base – and I’m sure they’d all be thrilled to receive the Angel Perfuming Hair Mist (£18.50). It has dual purpose, neutralising unpleasant smells (such as smoke or cooking smells) and enveloping it in the irresistibly chocolately notes of Angel. www.selfridges.com
Cath Kidston. How gorgeous is this Cath Kidston Wild Rose Soap (£5), housed in a egg-shaped tin? I love Cath Kidston and would quite happily fill my flat with her floral prints if I didn’t think my husband would object – so receiving this as a gift would make me far happier than if I was handed chocolate… The creamy rose-scented soap is perfect for leaving beside the sink, scenting the room as well as hands, and I could find a million uses for the tins when it was all used up. Perfect. www.bathandunwind.com
Marks & Spencer. This Get Set Go Travel Hairdryer (£15) might look cute – that polka-dot, pastel pink design wouldn’t look out of place in an Easter basket – but it packs a punch in the power stakes. With 1200W dual voltage, it’s powerful enough to dry locks in a matter of minutes – but small and light enough to take in your hand luggage, weighing just 290g. It would make a very welcome gift for girls that like to travel – I personally couldn’t survive without my travel hairdryer, but am sorely tempted to trade it in for this beauty. www.marksandspencer.com
Blog: AIMEE JERAM-CROFT TELLS US WHY SHE CREATED THE INSPIRING WEBSITE ALOPECIABEAUTYTIPS.COM – AND WHY SHE IS NOW TRAINING IN SEMI PERMANENT MAKEUP (15.04.11)
My name is Aimee and I have had Alopecia Universalis for the past 15 years. Over the past 3 years, I have been offering help and advise to women who have lost their hair from alopecia by running my own website and Blog on how to look and feel great if you too have lost your hair to Alopecia.
The reason I am so passionate about helping other women is because when I was a young girl growing up I felt like I was the only one with Alopecia. The information available was purely medical, very depressing to read, and left me with little hope. So I decided to create a positive place for other young girls/women with alopecia to realise that they are not alone.
My website is packed full of useful tips on how to look good and feel great. The help and support that is out there today is so much better than it was 15 years ago - but often women don’t know where to go to find it... I like to keep an eye on what is going on, so I can let you know about great places to get wigs, makeup and useful products - and just keep you generally informed.
My way of doing this is testing everything and giving you my point of view on it... I want to encourage you to go out and try everything too! Have fun with it and you will then find what works best for you. There is no one right or wrong solution as we all have are many, many differences. So don't by shy and try!!!
I am huge fan of Semi Permanent Makeup, as I truly believe this paired with a fantastic wig can really transform the way you look and give you back your confidence. My confidence has improved dramatically in the last 3 years from helping other women with Alopecia... I feel this has helped me come to terms with my own condition and has made me really proud of who I am. I still want to wear the best wigs and have the best Semi Permanent Make Up, but I’m not hiding behind these things. I just like to look fabulous and be proud of who I am.
I am currently training to become a Semi Permanent Makeup artist with the famous Karen Betts. I would like to continue supporting women who have lost their hair by focusing my work on recreating eyebrows and eyeliner to bring back features that are lost when your eyebrows/eyelashes really thin out or like me completely fall out.
It will be fantastic to get out and meet other women with Alopecia and to be able to offer such a life changing treatment.
I have been having the treatment done for years and I am always shocked by the price of it. Semi Permanent Make Up and the cost of a good wig can really set you back. I would like to help women by offering a really great price for my Semi Permanent Make Up.
Over the next couple of months, I would like to tell you more about my training with Karen Betts so you will feel confident that you are in good hands.
Please find below my website details and a short film on the training that I will have with Karen Betts...

TRIED & TESTED: COLOUR SAVING SHAMPOOS (15.04.11)
Protect coloured and highlighted hair with a Colour Saving Shampoo. We’ve put six to the test…
JO HANSFORD EVERYDAY SHAMPOO, £15 (http://johansford.com/)
What they say: Jo Hansford Everyday Shampoo is mild enough for daily use and has been specifically designed to nourish and protect coloured hair. It contains Castanha do Brasil, a natural sustainable ‘Forestry Stewardship Council’ ingredient from the Amazon, and Sunflower extract which help to extend the life of your hair colour.
The Results: My first impressions of this shampoo were that it’s pricey for something you might use every day – but you really do get what you pay for, right from the start. The packaging makes it look really classy and the smell is light and fruity, which lingers on hair. I got a good lather from one shampoo and my hair felt soft and clean, meaning I needed less conditioner than usual. In terms of colour protection, I’d just had my colour done when I started using it so it was a good time to start. I feel my colour is definitely fresher than usual after a month. Excellent stuff.
Best for: Frequent use
MÁDARA COLOUR AND SHINE ORGANIC SHAMPOO, £10.50 (www.madara.co.uk)
What they say: For coloured and treated hair, MÁDARA colour and shine organic shampoo has a colour preserving formula that gently cleanses and invigorates treated and coloured hair. This shampoo adds vigour, shine and vibrancy to hair colour.
The Results: The packaging was gorgeous and looked like something I would definitely be drawn to in a shop! The smell and texture of the shampoo was also lovely – it reminded me of having a smoothie for breakfast, it was so refreshing. After using it for a week, I felt my hair was much shinier and brighter. There wasn’t a huge amount of lather but I did feel it was getting my hair really clean. It’s quite expensive for a day-to-day shampoo but I would use it again as I really think it works - and the smell was lovely even a day after use.
Best for: Organic fans
FUDGE CLEAN BLONDE SHAMPOO, £11.95 (www.feelunique.com)
What they say: Fudge Violet Toning Shampoo removes yellow tones from blonde hair keeping it vibrant for longer. If you fit into any of these hair categories; dirty blonde hair, platinum blonde hair, naturally blonde hair, then this is the shampoo for you. It will not only keep your hair colour the shade you want, it will also smooth and hydrate your hair on a daily basis.
The Results: I wasn’t thrilled by the design of the tube, but this shampoo is excellent. It has a really great smell and lovely texture. Although it’s strange putting what seems like purple hair dye on your blonde hair, it is very effective. My hair looked bright and felt healthy after it was washed and I will continue to use it to tone down any brassy notes in my highlighted hair. Blonde hair can be difficult to keep bright but this really does help. I would definitely buy it again.
Best for: Blonde beauties
KLORANE SHAMPOO WITH POMEGRANATE, £6 (www.johnlewis.com)
What they say: Now you can keep tinted tresses in peak condition by treating it to Klorane Shampoo with Pomegranate, which fixes the pigments on keratin thus preventing the colour to fade. It also repairs the hair fibre and keeps hair colour radiant for longer
The Results: Although I didn't pause to read the (quite extensive) blurb on the box, I did catch sight of the word 'Pomegranate' – so I was expecting it to br overwhelmingly fruity. So I was a bit surprised when the shampoo actually wasn't heavily fragranced at all, and certainly had none of your Aussie or Herbal Essences-style sweet and fruity scent to it. Once I'd gone back and looked at the packaging more closely, I realised that the magic ingredient which 'binds the colour onto the keratin and prevents fading' comes from the bark of the pomegranate tree. Anyway, the shampoo is gorgeous – lovely and rich, and has really left my highlighted, straightened-on-a-daily-basis hair looking impressively shiny. Having only used it for a few weeks, I can't really vouch for its effectiveness in the medium to long term as far as colour-maintenance goes, but it gets full marks for strength and shine.
Best for: High shine
REF COLOUR SHAMPOO, £7.95 (www.hairtec.com)
What they say: A shampoo for colour treated hair. Helps to extend the life of your hair colour. Contains Tamanu Oil, which has a healing effect on a sensitive scalp and helps stimulate tissue and hair growth.
The Results: I loved this shampoo the minute I saw the bottle! The clean white and grey packaging looks really smart in my bathroom - and the shampoo itself is a gorgeous pale lilac opalescent colour. It has virtually no smell, which is good, and lathers up beautifully. My fine, flyaway and rather dry hair was left in just a couple of washes looking and feeling shinier and nourished. It also seems to have a volumising effect. My colour seems vibrant after a recent trip to the salon and I’m hoping this will continue. There is also a conditioner that goes with the shampoo, which is equally pleasant to use: it rinses out really well without any residue left on the hair. I’d like to carry on using both – top marks!
Best for: Extra volume
KADUS PROFESSIONAL COLOR RADIANCE SHAMPOO, £8.30 (01264 33 44 66)
What they say: Whether you have a head full or highlights or all-over hue, the new Kadus Professional Color Radiance shampoo is the ideal shade-saving product. Packed with revolutionary smart-navigating Radialux Micro-ions to provide targeted, long-lasting results that instantly leave the hair looking much healthier without product build-up and tailored ingredients to ensure long-lasting luminosity as well as protection against UV rays.
The results: On my dry, colour treated hair, this is a step above the usual colour preserving shampoos I have tried... and I have tried a lot. The smell is lovely, not overpowering but a delicate scent of passion fruit. The lather is rich and creamy and you only need a tiny blob. It's almost more like a conditioner and shampoo combined, but it leaves no residue and my hair was squeaky clean but not brittle after use. Once dried, my hair was smooth and shiny. As for the colour of my hair – it hasn't faded but it maybe doesn't look that much brighter either. A real winner.
Best for: Conditioning hair
Editor’s Letter (15.04.11)
I received a press release this week informing me that the group that visits the hairdressers most often in the UK are the over 70’s… Is that really surprising? The ageing female population has a penchant for tight curls set close to the scalp and regular colour treatments. In the urban dictionary, this style is called “Grandma Hair” – and as unfair as that sounds, it was definitely a favourite style of at least one of my own grandmothers. Personally, I couldn’t see myself wandering into a salon and asking for something similar – so I wonder if the trend will change when my own generation (and even my parents generation) reaches their twilight years. I love the thought of long grey hair, falling to below the shoulders. There’s something very elegant and unique about it – and I can’t see why it wouldn’t work if the hair was carefully conditioned and blow-dried every morning (surely cheaper and less time consuming than those trips to the hairdressers…) How do you see your style changing in later life? Let me know at editor@the-beauty-pages.com
Crème de la Mer. I was lucky enough to be recently given Crème de la Mer’s new Radiance Infusion (£80) to test – and I have been diligently testing it ever since (to be honest, it’s not exactly a chore…) The lightweight, cooling serum promises to boost radiance and clarity, minimise pores, and improve tone. When I started using it, my skin wasn’t in great shape – but it has done some amazing things. It took a while, as I hadn’t noticed improvements until week 3, but it’s worth sticking to. My skin has regained its glow and the tone is far more even. Plus, it’s a real treat to use. www.cremedelamer.co.uk
Lush. We’re all saddened by the recent devastation in Japan, but for the brand Lush, that heartbreak has been very personal. Lush have 145 shops and a factory in the country – and some of their staff and their families have lost everything. The brand’s new Japan Aid Soap (£5) hopes to make a difference – with all proceeds (bar VAT, which legally has to go to our government) going to the relief effort. Shaped like the Japanese flag, the limited edition soap will soften skin and leave it laced with a delicious coconut scent. Buy one for friends, family, and every sink in your house. It’s such a worthy cause. www.lush.co.uk
ZOYA. I tested ZOYA Nail Polish (£9.25) for the first time last week – and I am mega, mega impressed. I’m always in a hurry – and thanks to that haste, my nails usually feature smudges and streaks when I paint at home. Last week, I applied my usual skill (or lack of it), but the result was absolutely perfect. I could hardly believe how professional it looked – the coverage was so even-toned and glossy that it looked like a gel manicure. It’s almost as if the smudges and streaks melted into each other to create the perfect finish. It’s also brilliantly long-lasting and free of toxic Toluene, Formaldehyde and DBP. Wow. www.lucyrose.biz
Clarins. To be honest, I’m not that adventurous when it comes to foundation. My skin has dramatically improved since swapping to mineral powder formulations, so I have been loathed to swap to anything else. Recently, however, I’ve been hunting for a foundation that offers more coverage for evenings out – and as if by magic, Clarins Illusion Natural Radiance Foundation SPF10 (£24) landed on my desk. It has a super light texture, blends easily, and leaves skin looking radiant and dewy – but it also covers blemishes and balances skin tone. I would really recommend it. A little goes a long way, so the pump bottle will last a while. http://uk.clarins.com
ASOS. Spending a lot of my time in Dubai has made me fall head over heels for maxi dresses – they are perfect for throwing on before a trip to the beach, mall, or even night out. I am currently coveting this colourful Multi Smudge Print Maxi Dress from ASOS (£65) – and better still, the brand offers free delivery worldwide (not that I need any more incentive…) Mum, if you are reading, please switch the sewing machine on – I’ll need it taken up a few inches… www.asos.com
Treatment Review: DE STRESS MUSCLE MASSAGE, BLUE HARBOUR SPA, WYNDHAM GRAND HOTEL, LONDON (15.04.11)
What it promises: This full body massage incorporates the powerful properties of aromatherapy oils, with stretching and deep tissue work using hot and cold stones. Blue Harbour Spa uses luxury products by MONU, Aromatherapy Associates, YON KA, and MAMA MIO – and this treatment is the perfect antidote to tight shoulders and stressed minds.
What happens: I’d never been to this part of Chelsea – but I was hooked within seconds of clocking the boats gently bobbing in the harbour. It felt like I had transported a million miles away from the big city and I was more than ready to step into the Blue Harbour Spa for some pampering. After being shown to the changing rooms to change into a big fluffy white robe and slippers (bliss), I was taken downstairs to the beautiful relaxation area to wait – dimly lit, with candles flickering and the scent of luxurious essential oils lulling me into a state of relaxation. My therapist greeted me – an ex-nurse called Louise (how reassuring to know I was in the hands of an ex-nurse!) – and led me to the treatment room. She asked me to stand with my back to her – and just by looking at the way I was standing, diagnosed a problem with my left foot (correct: accident two years ago) and shoulders (correct again: I suffer from shoulder pain). I was amazed and had high hopes for the treatment that would follow… Thankfully, I wasn’t disappointed – this was a very thorough, deep massage that pummelled tight muscles until they surrendered and eased. A deep tissue massage isn’t always comfortable, of course – but towards the end of the treatment, as she moved onto my neck and scalp, I was so relaxed that I dozed off. When the treatment was over, I was invited back to the relaxation area and enjoyed half an hour flicking through magazines and sipping herbal tea. I can’t think of a better way to spend an afternoon.
The Results: I have tested many massages in London, but I can genuinely say that this is one of the best. Everything about it was perfect – the luxurious location, the experienced therapist, the effective strokes, and the irresistible products (MONU is a great brand, which I have discovered since the treatment). Afterwards, I felt completely knot-free – but better still, I felt lighter, brighter, and more positive. The Wyndham Grand isn’t the easiest place for me to get to, as I live down in Kent – but I am seriously considering booking in for a massage with Louise on a monthly basis, which shows quite how good it is. If you suffer from muscle pain, this will make a huge difference.

PERRICONE
Dr Perricone is a renowned US doctor who began his dermatology practice over 20 years ago in Connecticut. During his practice, he tested and researched the now renowned technologies of Alpha Lipoic Acid, DMAE and Vitamin C Ester, which today are the cornerstone for his skincare systems.
In 1997, he joined forces with an expert chemist and created a professional line of skincare products for dermatological use. He followed this with a range intended for retail which contained his unique, patented super nutrients that give skin an overall appearance of health and radiance. Then, in early spring 2005 Dr Perricone opened the doors to his first flagship store on Madison Avenue in the heart of New York City – home to his 3-tier approach to anti-aging, featuring a Perricone library, in-house nutritionist, and personalised skincare consultations. Not long after that, American Vogue named Dr Perricone one of the best dermatologists in the US.

BREMENN
In the US particularly, many people consider surgery to correct concerns such as dark under eye circles or a saggy rear-end. Bremenn Research Labs have become famous stateside for their non-surgical solutions to many common cosmetic problems. They are loved over here in the UK too, because their specifically developed creams and lotions solve problems in particular areas of the body – from wrinkled foreheads to saggy boobs...
From the beginning, Bremenn Research Labs has been about solving specific problems, rather than just creating yet another “wrinkle cream”. Bremenn’s first big hit was with Hylexin, the “Serious Dark Circles” cream developed specifically to reduce the appearance of serious under eye circles and puffiness under the eye.
Bremenn followed this with specific, targeted solutions for hyperpigmentation (age spots) on the hands and face, droopy upper eyelids, wrinkled foreheads, facial spider veins, saggy buttocks – and now there’s even a Bremenn formulation for that totally unexpected “zit from hell” that pops up at the last minute. In fact, if you’ve got a skincare problem, Bremenn has the answer. Try the bestselling Hylexin, £53.50 (www.beautybay.com), which has been shown to help reduce haemoglobin degradation by-products by optimising enzymatic activity, causing the red-blue pigmentation of dark circles to fade. Hi-tech stuff.
MALIN + GOETZ
You can’t get cooler than MALIN+GOETZ. This NYC-based apothecary brand focuses on natural based treatments that use the most gentle, least irritating of performance technologies for face, body and hair. Their natural-based formulas are 100 per cent free of parabens, synthetic fragrances, colourants and unnecessary detergents. And not only that, their eco-friendly initiatives include using locally produced products to reduce their carbon footprint, the elimination of unnecessary packaging which is also recyclable and recycling programmes for customers at the apothecaries.
Matthew Malin worked as a cosmetic buyer for the then family-owned Barney’s, moving to Kiehl’s, L’Oreal and finally Prada Beauty before developing the business plan for MALIN+GOETZ. Andrew Goetz worked for 10 years as marketing director at Vitra, a Swiss family-operated design manufacturer, and has also established himself as a chef for a monthly dinner party that Food & Wine magazine call one of Manhattan’s ‘best’. Together they opened the first MALIN+GOETZ apothecary in New York's Chelsea neighbourhood in March 2004 – and waited on each customer themselves for the first three years. In fact, they still live in Chelsea around the corner from the store.
Try the Grapefruit Face Cleanser, £24 (www.liberty.co.uk), a gentle, foaming cleansing gel, designed for daily use. It synthesises natural grapefruit extract with amino acid based cleansing agents, and unlike traditionally harsh detergents that can be drying, stripping and irritating, this formula gently and thoroughly purifies and hydrates to pH balance all skin types, especially sensitive ones. It even removes makeup, including waterproof eye makeup. A bestselling product in the range.
Blog: BEAUTY EXPERT AND TV PRESENTER NICKY HAMBLETON-JONES SHARES ANTI-AGEING TIPS FOR EVERY AGE GROUP (07.04.11)
Did you know that skin starts ageing when you are somewhere between 17 and 25 years old, and that a peachy, plump complexion can be deceiving? Damage that was done years before may not show on the skin until well in your 30’s. I’m going to tell you what happens to your skin as you get older and share bespoke tips and techniques for maintaining a vibrant complexion through the decades…
20’s – Protect, Protect, Protect
• When in our 20’s, it’s time to protect skin as much as possible. Never leave the house without wearing a moisturiser that is at least SPF25, to ensure skin is protected around the clock.
• Adopt a really good skincare regime – take time to cleanse, tone and moisturise each and every day. All that partying and those late nights will take their toll on your skin as you get older, and if you find yourself too tired to remove make-up after a big night out, remember that your skin ages eight days for every night that you don’t. It might feel like a hassle in the early hours, but just giving your skin a good cleanse before you go to bed will make a huge difference on the fine lines and wrinkles that will appear in your 30’s and 40’s.
30’s – Your eyes say it all
• They say 35 is D-Day and when ageing really starts to show on your face, so it’s really important that you look after your eyes. We begin to see a loss of elasticity in the skin in our 30’s with a few fine lines and wrinkles, particularly in the under-eye area where you can spot the first visible signs of ageing. If you haven’t already, you should invest in a good eye cream as it’s important to keep this delicate area really hydrated.
• Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate! Cell renewal starts to decline in your 30’s and that’s when ageing begins. The best way to boost collagen and elastin production, and slow down the destruction of your cells is to exfoliate the skin twice a week. Whether you choose physical or chemical exfoliation, try and get into a that which will go a long way to ensuring your skin looks fantastic well into your 40’s.
40’s – Firmness is the name of the game
• In our 40’s collagen production really drops down, the skin is not actually producing as much as it used to. Plus we lose a lot of volume in our face as a result of fat loss under the skin which means the fine lines and wrinkles we had in our 30’s may deepen and we might see folds appearing on the skin around the ‘nose-to -lip’ lines and the jowls, and a general loss of vibrancy in the skin. Invest in products that will plump, boost collagen production and firm.
• Serums are a must. If you’re not using a serum yet, I definitely suggest you start now. Serums are usually oil based and will penetrate the skin far more deeply than any cream can, meaning you will get the nutrients your skin needs deep down into the dermis which can help stimulate collagen production.
• In our 40’s we might want to consider cosmetic intervention. Procedures such a Botox are fantastic for eliminating fine lines and wrinkles. Fillers are a great way of plumping the skin and restoring lost volume, plus there are lots of resurfacing techniques such as microdermabrasion and peeling that can even out pigmentation. Sometimes, little bits of intervention along the way can keep your skin looking young, so you don’t wake up one morning wondering what the heck happened to your complexion?
50’s – Hydration is key
• At this stage a number of things happen to our skin, oestrogen levels drop dramatically which means skin renewal slows down and we get a lot of dead skin cells building on the surface of the skin. Oil production slows down and your skin starts to dry out, losing its youthful glow. Pigment cells tend to clump together, and that’s why we see dark age-spots appearing on the face which make lines and wrinkles more pronounced. We see more sagging in the skin, and all those years of damage start to show up. In our 50’s it is vital to use a moisturiser with Vitamin C, a powerful anti-oxidant that can help kick-start cell renewal and also help to dissolve pigmentation on the skin.
• Intense hydration is really important too, make sure that you are using a serum as well as a moisturiser that really nourishes the skin.
• Don’t forget that cosmetic intervention is at hand to help you resurface, plump up and soften those fine lines and wrinkles if you do start to feel a little insecure about the way you look in the mirror.

Feature: PERFUME NOTES (07.04.11)
From Pharaoh’s tombs, to the perfumed town of Grasse, to today’s slickest department stores – Astrid Mitchison takes us on a journey of fragrance…
A FRAGRANT HISTORY
The saying goes: “A world without scent would be a world without history” – and it’s very true. Fragrance dates back as far as ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians, who buried their Pharaohs with vials of scent to take into the afterlife.
The modern perfume industry has its roots in the French town of Grasse, where fragrance houses developed out of a necessity to mask the odour of the leather tanning processes that the town was previously famous for. During the 18th Century, recognisable fragrance houses started springing up including Floris, Houbigant and Mulhens, all of which survive to this day.
Floris (www.florislondon.com) recently celebrated its 280th anniversary, having been established in 1730 in the gentlemen’s quarter of London, Jermyn Street, which remains the base of the company today. The archives hold treasured letters from historic figures such as Florence Nightingale, Beau Brummel and Ian Flemming, all whom were customers.
Over in France, Marie Antoinette - renowned for her extravagant tastes - was a fan of Houbigant. The fragrance house was founded in Paris in 1775 when Jean-Francois Houbigant hung a hand-painted sign of a flower basket above his shop on the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore. In 1912, Houbigant launched Quelques Fleurs, £45 for 30ml (01420 489 700), which experts note as the first modern floral fragrance. Although Germany is not classically associated with the perfume industry, Muelhen’s 4711 eau de cologne, £16.95 for 100ml (Boots Nationwide) was adored by Napoleon and still has a cult following.
Another heritage perfume house, E. Coudray was historically appointed to the royal households of Louis XVIII as well as supplying crowned heads across Europe with their toiletries. Originally created in 1929, their iconic scent, Black Tulip, has recently been rereleased, this time going by the name, “Nohiba”, £58 for 100ml (Fortnum & Mason: 0207 734 8040).
THE ICONS
The perfume market is crowded, which can make choosing a fragrance a daunting task. The icons of the perfume world offer a good starting point.
Guerlain is renowned as one of the great fragrance houses. The legend goes that Jacques Guerlain was experimenting with a new extract, vanillin ethyl and added it to a bottle of the house’s Jicky perfume to see what would happen and so a fragrance icon was born. When Guerlain launched Shalimar, £38.50 for 30ml (01932 233 887), in 1925, the fragrance captured the spirit of the time, when the trend was for all things oriental and women were celebrating a newfound independence. The scent is so unabashedly sensual that it was said, “a lady must never smoke, dance the tango or wear Shalimar”.
Issey Miyake’s signature fragrance, L’Eau d’Issey, £47.49 for 50ml (www.isseymiyakeparfums.com) is regarded as one of the first aquatic scents and following its launch almost 20 years ago, remains on the bestselling lists. The brand was also the first to launch a special summer edition, sparking a huge trend and new marketing possibilities for the industry.
CK One, £22 for 50ml (Boots nationwide) was launched in 1994, marketed on the premise that scent transcends gender and became the largest selling fragrance of all time. Although it was not in fact the first unisex fragrance, it is often regarded as such. The scent was accompanied by a black and white ad campaign, which was to become the signature style of the designer, featuring a new model called Kate Moss who epitomised the androgynous feeling of the fragrance with her waif figure.
No fragrance feature would be complete without a mention of Chanel No. 5, £59 for 50ml (0207 493 3836), which has been the bestselling fragrance in the world since its launch in the 1920s. Gabrielle Chanel broke boundaries and set the tone for a billion dollar industry when she came up with the idea of launching a signature fragrance as traditionally, couturiers and perfume houses had been two very separate entities. She worked with “nose” Ernest Beaux in developing a fragrance that was unlike any other, “a women’s fragrance that smells like women.” The blend of floral components was a step away from the single note fragrances of the time and it is said that when presented with samples in 1921, Gabrielle Chanel chose the fifth as her favourite, requesting that jasmine from Grasse be added - and so, fragrance history was made.
BOTTLES AS ART
In an ever more crowded market, an interesting bottle can help a perfume stand out. Jean Paul Gaultier is a good example. Ever since he designed the costumes for Madonna’s 1990 Blonde Ambition tour, the designer has been associated with corsetry and exaggerating the female form - and as he states, “my collections always feature sailor stripes, corsetry and tattoos”. He took inspiration from this for his fragrance, Classique - and the summer 2011 edition, £39 for 100ml (Available Nationwide) sees the bottle decorated with Maori style tattoos.
Often cited as the Marmite of the fragrance world, Thierry Mugler’s Angel, £41.87 for 25ml (0207 307 6700), launched in 1992, possesses the power to polarise opinion, being the first fragrance to reject traditional floral notes in favour of gourmand elements including chocolate and caramel - you’ll either love it or hate it, but bottle is undeniably beautiful. It was designed by Thierry Mugler himself and made using a revolutionary manufacturing process, requiring French glass makers to invent a special machine purely for the bottle. Due to the need to finish each celestial bottle by hand, no two bottles are completely identical. Every single Angel bottle is hand polished in the tradition of fine French crystal as a finishing step.
Swarovski is synonymous with faceted, cut crystal - so it’s unsurprising that the bottle for the brand’s debut fragrance, Aura, £44 for 30ml (Selfridges Nationwide) is considered an artwork in itself. The bottle is streamlined, with a transparent panel to display the rose tinted liquid within and is topped with a single crystal jewel. Even the box is well thought out, resembling a jewellery case. Gwenael Nicolas, designer of the Aura bottle explains, “I wanted to create an object that is timeless, something that could have been in a palace in Vienna in the beginning of the last century or could be the focal point in a modern loft in New York or could be featured in a futuristic movie. This creation had to represent these types of simplicity, of obviousness, as well as a strong character that is unique and instantly recognisable.”
CELEBRITY CREATIONS
These days, it seems you’re nobody unless you have a signature fragrance. Everyone from Cliff Richard to Katie Price has jumped on the bandwagon, with Jennifer Lopez’s debut fragrance Glow proving one of the most successful. In 2002, Glow by J.lo, £27 for 50ml (Boots Nationwide) made fragrance history by becoming the top selling perfume in more than nine countries within four months of its launch.
Britney Spears made her first foray into the profitable perfume industry with the introduction of Curious, £29.60 for 100ml (www.lookfantastic.com), in 2004. The fragrance features Louisiana Magnolia in homage to the popstar’s home and has become a bestseller, with a further line of perfumes following.
2005 saw Sarah Jessica Parker’s debut perfume launching onto shelves. The star is regarded as one of the few celebrities who was known for having an interest in fragrance ahead of launching her own line - something that experts say can be detected in her debut fragrance, Lovely, £25 for 30ml (Boots Nationwide). The award-winning floral fragrance comprises notes of crisp apple martini, exotic orchids and warm amber.
Not to miss a branding opportunity, David and Victoria Beckham followed a year later, with the first celebrity ‘his’ and ‘her’ fragrances, Intimately Beckham, £21 for 30ml (Boots nationwide).
NATURAL SCENTS
As the trend for natural beauty continues to grow, the demand for natural fragrances has boomed.
Celebrity favourite The Organic Pharmacy spent three years developing their line of five 100% organic and natural Organic Glam fragrances, £110 for 100ml (www.organicglam.com). The fragrances are intended to be chosen primarily because women love their scent, with the organic ethos being a secondary element. Available in Citron, Oriental Blossom, Jasmine, Oud and Orange Blossom, the fragrances are free from synthetics and animal ingredients.
When Korres came to develop their first fragrance line, the Greek brand wanted to avoid synthetics. Brand Development Director Lena Korres explains, “As part of an ongoing effort to eliminate potential exposure to polycyclic-musk (PCM), nitro-musk and phthalates, Korres has opted for a fragrance that is free of these synthetic non-biodegradable compounds that are widely used as fragrance fixatives and are known to cause irritations and bioaccumulation; Korres developed instead a formula, preserved with a natural food-grade antioxidant- Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary).” The line features four fragrances, each named after their key notes, £24 for 50ml (0870 850 3868).
Launching in April, Embrace by Patricia Gallagher, £58 for 30ml (www.pgorganics.co.uk) also took three years to come to fruition and the creator explains just one of the many struggles she had to overcome in producing the scent, “When it came to certification, there was a challenge in the sense that normally companies engage with certifiers (in our case Ecocert) in advance of formulating a new product. Since Embrace had already been manufactured and I had purchased bottles, it was a blow to find out that in order to comply with Ecocert guidelines, the overcap on the bottle needed to change resulting in unexpected expense and delays launching the fragrance.” The scent is a unique combination of ylang ylang, iris, neroli, rose, mimosa, amber and musk, which is classed as a chypre with oriental influences.
FUTURE CLASSICS
So, in a saturated marketplace, which of today’s fragrances are likely to stand the test of time?
Sara Stern, Divisional Trading Director Lingerie and Cosmetics, Debenhams identifies her future classics as, “Gucci Guilty Eau de Toilette, £48 for 50ml (www.debenhams.com) had an amazing launch in Autumn Winter 2010 and has continued to feature in the top ten. I think this is going to just keep getting more and more popular for years to come. Secondly, Jimmy Choo Eau de Parfum, £39 for 40ml has probably been our best female spring launch ever. It ticks all the boxes for a future classic - sexy, stylish, sophisticated and wonderfully feminine.”
Dolce & Gabbana’s Light Blue, £30 for 25ml (Available Nationwide) celebrates its tenth anniversary this year and drives the most sales out of the D&G fragrance lines, standing it in good stead to become a classic. The design duo comment, “We are extremely proud of the legacy we have created with Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue. The fragrance captures the timeless sensuality of the Mediterranean: a location that has been, and always will be, the perfect playground for seduction. There is no more enticing expression of la dolce vita.”
The last word, however, must go to Roja Dove (www.rojadove.com), The World’s Sole Professeur de Parfums, who is regarded as one of the best “noses” in the world today, who cites future classics as, “Neroli Portofino by Tom Ford, Blessings by Belinda Brown, Maison Martin Margelia’s ‘Untitled’ and, if you don’t mind me mentioning one of my own fragrances, Scandal.”
TRIED & TESTED: SOOTHING LIP BALM (07.04.11)
Lips still feeling the effects of the colder seasons? Soothe cracked, dry pouts with our pick of lip balms…
EVE LOM KISS MIX, £14 for 7ml (www.evelom.com)
What they say: With its moisturising and healing ingredients, Kiss Mix is an absolute must for everybody. It is a year-round product as it keeps lips moisturised and protected from UV rays in summer and biting winds in winter.
The Results: I’ve always envied girls with smooth, plump lips – as mine are always dry and cracked, especially in winter. I’ve tried lots of products to keep them hydrated, but nothing makes a huge difference - so I didn’t have high-hopes when I was handed this product. I loved the sleek, minimalist packaging – and the thick, fairly sticky balm has a subtle minty scent and felt luxurious when smoothed onto lips. It feels cool and tingly, which perfect for sore lips, and kept my lips feeling supple for hours (no exaggeration). I’m hugely impressed. Despite the price - and I’d get through the small tub quickly – I would invest again. I want one in every handbag! It hasn’t completely cured my lips, but there’s a marked difference when I have applied it!
Best for: Very dry lips
JO MALONE VITAMIN E LIP CONDITIONER SPF15, £22 for 15ml (www.jomalone.co.uk)
What they say: Vitamin E Lip Conditioner SPF 15 is a rich, protective treatment that nourishes and soothes dry and damaged lips.
The Results: The price is extreme for a lip balm – but I’m a fan of Jo Malone products, so I knew it would be very effective. My lips are in fairly good condition, but prone to dryness – and my latest obsession with bright lipstick means it’s even more important that the skin is smooth and hydrated. The packaging – as with all Jo Malone products – was stylish and expensive-looking. I liked the way the balm could be squeezed directly onto lips, which is hygienic and also prevents wastage (important at this price!) There was no tingling or cooling – but simply a feeling of instant hydration. It’s very long-lasting – I applied it in the morning before lipstick and didn’t need to reapply until lunchtime.
Best for: Long-term results
THE BODY SHOP ALOE LIP TREATMENT, £6 for 15ml (www.thebodyshop.co.uk)
What they say: A moisturising, non-greasy lip balm to nourish and protect the delicate skin on the lips and soothe the discomfort of dry, chapped lips. With regular use, lips feel soft, soothed and well protected. Dermatologically approved and clinically proven as suitable for sensitive skin.
The Results: I don’t think the packaging is that tempting – I’d probably walk straight past it if it was on the shelf – but it’s what is inside that really counts. I don’t have sensitive skin, but my daughter does, so I understand the importance of dermatologically tested products. That’s a big plus point. I loved the texture of the product – it felt silky, almost like a paste, and absorbed very quickly into skin. It left lips feeling soft and very supple. It has a refreshing, fruity scent (it reminded me of figs and dates, but in a very subtle way!) and I really enjoyed applying it. It didn’t last as long as other products I’ve tried, so I needed to reapply half an hour later to boost the effects – but overall, I really liked it.
Best for: Sensitive skin
L’OCCITANE ULTRA RICH LIP BALM, £7 for 5g (http://uk.loccitane.com)
What they say: Formulated with 10% of shea butter, this lip balm protects, nourishes, moisturises and soothes dry lips.
The Results: I was really looking forward to trying this lip balm – everything about it seemed rich and luxurious – but I was a bit disappointed. My lips are very, very dry and need to be moisturised throughout the day to stop them splitting. After applying this product, the skin felt soothed and hydrated – but within a few minutes, they felt dry again and I had to reapply. I imagine it would keep lips hydrated for longer if you don’t suffer from such dry skin. It’s not long-lasting enough to become my regular lip balm, but I will keep it in my handbag for touch-ups every now and again. I can imagine it working well to smooth skin before applying lipstick. As it’s a stick form, it will also last a long time.
Best for: Keeping in handbag
MÁDARA ORGANIC REGENERATING LIP BALM, £9.90 for 15ml (www.madara.co.uk)
What they say: MÁDARA ecolips organic regenerating lip balm nourishes and softens lips, helps to slow down the ageing process and stimulates cell renewal.
The Results: On paper, this lip balm sounds amazing – organic, anti-ageing, and softening. I was looking forward to testing it and it didn’t disappoint. The balm has a paste-like texture and fairly bright yellow colouring, which disappears when you smooth onto lips. It doesn’t completely absorb, which means a layer is left on surface to keep lips feeling supple and hydrated (I liked this, as I hate the feeling of dry lips). It also has a citrus scent, which was pleasant. The fairly fluid texture means that you do end up tasting it when you eat or sip a drink – but it isn’t unpleasant and as it’s organic, that didn’t bother me. I haven’t been using it long enough to rate it on its anti-ageing claims, but I would definitely recommend it as an everyday lip balm for dry lips.
Best for: Organic beauty fans
YES TO CARROTS C ME SMILE LIP BUTTER, £2.99 for 4.25g (www.beautybay.com)
What they say: These USDA Organic Lip Butters condition, invigorate and revitalise lips, moisturising them to keep them the smoothest and softest they can be.
The Results: The packaging is bright and cheerful – it doesn’t look luxurious, but it’s not pretending to be. I liked the selection of scents available and tested ‘Carrot’. It has a sweet scent, but doesn’t actually smell like carrots! The balm itself is rich and instantly soothing. It clung to my lips well, offering long-lasting relief to my dry, dehydrated lips. I’ve been using the stick now for a couple of weeks and it hardly looks like I’ve used it, so it will last a long time. It offers really amazing value for money – especially considering it is 95% organic and completely natural.
Best for: Budget buy
Treatment Review: LASER BACK HAIR REMOVAL AT BEYOND MEDISPA, HARVEY NICHOLS (07.04.11)
What it promises: Shaving and waxing do have their benefits but the drawbacks easily outweigh them. Results don’t last, it’s awkward, often expensive, and tiresome. Laser therapy is the only real long-term solution to back hair. It involves a total of 5-6 treatment sessions, with a 6 week or so gap between, and is quite simply the most effective way to remove unwanted hair. Your first step on the road to near permanent hair eradication is close. I say ‘near’ permanent as no laser treatment can guarantee removal of back hair that lasts forever, no matter what they promise. They do however advise that it should last for a good few years (5 or more), and even then the hair will only come back in lighter, less concentrated patches.
What happens: First – You meet for a consultation where they take a look at your back thatch and analyse the best course of treatment for you personally. Then, you sign a few forms and begin your first session. Each session takes around 20 minutes. With 6 week breaks between sessions, it takes around 4-6 months to fully complete (between appointments, you have a little hair returning to your back in softer patches). I was looked after by the brilliant Magda throughout all of my appointments. First she dry shaved my back to get rid of the offending hairs, then applied special conductive oil/gel. Next comes the technology… The laser covers the entire back top to bottom (and top of the arms – a pesky place) and no follicle root is left un-blasted. To make sure all is covered, the laser slightly overlaps the last wave of application. You wear special wraparound sunglasses as a precaution, but it’s more like a pulse of light than an industrial laser! There’s a tiny smell of burning hair during the process (which I find strangely reassuring), and a slight nip on the skin when the laser hits – but honestly, compared to waxing. It’s a piece of cake.
The Results: I am completely bald on my back and it’s a strange and impressive feeling! Between sessions, the hair doesn’t grow back strongly and doesn’t itch like it can with waxing/shaving. After 5 sessions I am completely free of back hair, and have been for a few months. I feel 100% confident now taking off my top, without the need to try and cleverly position myself so that noone can see my Chewbacca-lite style reverse. You can battle your genes! All of the staff are excellent. Especially Jo on reception and Magda. Friendly, fun, professional and just as importantly – successful!
Price: Compared to the continuous hassle and costs of shaving /waxing – it’s actually an economical option. More than that, it’s the only way you get the results you need. Prices are £100 per treatment or a course of 6 is £500 (half back). Full back is £250 per treatment or a course of 6 is £1250.

Editor’s Letter (07.04.11)
Would you dip-dye your hair? I thought the look was a bit extreme when it first hit the catwalks, but I’m starting to warm to it… I’ve been writing about the trend recently for a freelance client, which involves lots of picture research - from the bright catwalk colours at Meadham Kirchhoff Spring/Summer 2011, to the more subtle colour-combos that celebrities like Drew Barrymore, Rachel Bilson, and Alexa Chung have been showing off – and it’s really starting to grow on me. I especially like it when blonde hair is dipped in warm pastel colours, such as rose pink or peach (not a look I can try out myself sadly, since I swapped to the dark side) – but it also looks great when darker hair has bleached tips and vice versa. I like the fact it’s so changeable, allowing us to try one colour, then head back to the salon for another when it starts to grow out. Am I brave enough to try it? Watch this space… And let me know what you think at editor@the-beauty-pages.com
Elemis. I only started using Elemis skincare regularly last year – but I sincerely wish I had discovered it earlier. Luckily for those in their teens and early twenties (alas, that doesn’t include me), the luxurious, effective spa brand has just launched ‘Fresh Skin’ – a skincare range for younger customers, which boasts active raw ingredients, such as rosehip oil, geranium, elderflower, and apple. The range includes two moisturisers (from £20), a range of cleansers and exfoliators (from £8), face mask (£15), lip balm (£8), and eye rescue (£15). I can’t recommend this brand highly enough. Available exclusively pre-launch at www.feelunique.com
Cle des Champs. I was sent a few products from the fabulous Cle des Champs range – a natural, organic brand from Lyon in France, which has just hit UK shores. The range is inspired by traditional Chinese medicine and aims to harmonize human beings with the environment. My favourite has to be the Spring Summer Body Scrub (£54). The blend of poppy flower extract, anise floral water, and bamboo stem extract creates a very, very effective body scrub – whilst the delicate scent (which reminds me a little of ripe tomatoes!) is both natural and summery. Premium, natural, effective skincare – it doesn’t get much better. www.cledeschamps.co.uk
IMEDEEN. If you haven’t heard about the brand IMEDEEN, now is the perfect time to discover what their range of skincare supplements can do… The brand is celebrating their 20th birthday this year – and to celebrate, they are giving customers an extra 30 tablets in 120 packs of IMEDEEN Time Perfection (£78.13). The supplements might sound pricey (which is all the more reason to snap up this amazing deal), but I have seen first-hand how they make a difference to the condition of skin (the brand actually measured the collagen in my skin, before and after taking them – and I was seriously impressed). www.imedeen.co.uk
Escentual.com. I love the sound of the Cartier Fragrance Discovery Set (£15), which has just launched at Escentual.com. The set contains nine trial Cartier fragrances in a luxury gift set, which you can test, sniff, and ponder to your hearts content… The website will then send you a gift voucher for £15 (the price of the set, so you have essentially got it free) so you can buy a full-sized bottle of your favourite. It’s a brilliant idea, giving us the chance to truly try before we buy – and I hear that other brands will be getting involved soon. www.escentual.com
Mulberry. Two of my biggest passions in life are my dog and my Mulberry handbags – so when I found out that the luxe British brand had named their latest style ‘Lily’ (the name of my dog too), it made it even harder to resist… The slouchy mini shoulder bags have beautiful chain handles – and range in price from £460 (for plain leather or washed denim) to £3574 (for jewelled camel suede). If I did invest, however, the real Lily wouldn’t be allowed anywhere near her namesake. www.mulberry.com
Breaking News: TREAT YOUR FEET TO A PAIR OF PAMPERED TOES (01.04.11)
Sponsored Post
Been pounding pavements all day? Squeezed your feet into sky-high stilettos for a night out? Whatever the reason, you no longer need to suffer the pain of pinched, cramped, or aching feet.
Pampered Toes are now on sale at JM Direct, Boots, and Superdrug. The nifty gel-filled toe-stretching devices that are cleverly designed to stretch foot muscles apart from each other. Extending tired tendons and strengthening foot muscles, they’ll have you walking again in no time.
Simply slip them between your toes and put your feet up. You’ll only need to wear them for ten minutes at first – but you can gradually build up to wearing them for an hour or more.
Here are some tips for wearing them:
- For a cooling treat, put them in the freezer (just pop them in a plastic bag).
- Wear them in the bath. The hot water helps loosen and relax muscles.
- Wear them under your desk at work to relieve feet from high heels.
- Wear them after workouts to keep feet fit.
- Wear them whilst asleep.
Pampered Toes are £9.99 from JML Direct, Boots, and Superdrug. They are available in blue or pink. To buy online at JML Direct, visit: http://www.jmldirect.com/Pampered-Toes-PP0010/
TRIED & TESTED: BRIGHT NAIL POLISH (01.04.11)
This season, nails should be bold, bright, and glossy. We’ve put six of the brightest hues to the test…
PAUL & JOE NAIL ENAMEL IN LA REVUE, £9 (www.asos.com)
What they say: Nail enamel by Paul & Joe. Featuring a range of basic, playful colours, the nail colours protect and moisturise the nail, keeping nails healthy.
The Results: Visually, this product couldn’t be any more appealing… I love the vintage-style bottle and the fun, zingy shade of pink, which is perfect for summer. The brush is quite long and thin - and it picks up a little more polish than needed, so I managed to flood the cuticle a few times. After a few slips, I realised I needed to wipe the excess from the brush before painting – and after that, the result was perfect. I needed two coats to give the best colour result. On the nail, the pink is darker and looks more like a coral. It lasted well – but after a few days, I had chips forming on the tip of each nail, so I’d recommend following with a topcoat. I love this polish - it’s pretty, feminine, and looks great on the dressing table!
Best for: Feminine
BOURJOIS SO LAQUE ULTRA SHINE NAIL ENAMEL IN ROUGE CASINO, £5.99 (www.boots.com)
What they say: Bourjois So Laque! Ultra Shine Nail Varnish gives twice as much vinyl for twice as much shine, lasting up to 7 days.
The Results: I prefer classic makeup, so wearing bright colours on my nails is a bit daunting! Red is my compromise – it’s fashionable, but still grown-up and sophisticated. I liked this colour – it’s bright, but with a hint of cherry, which makes it warmer and easier to wear. I found it very quick and easy to paint nails. The brush is thick and splays out as you sweep over nail. One coat is all that’s required, but the colour is even more vibrant with two coats, so it’s worth the extra effort. The best thing about this polish, however, is the glossy finish – it’s amazing, exactly like I’m wearing a high-shine topcoat. I’d recommend it.
Best for: Shine
ANDREA FULERTON NAIL BOUTIQUE COLOUR IN EUGENIE, £5.10 (www.superdrug.com)
What they say: Professional formula nail varnish and brush. Durable and long lasting. Allows nails to flex without chipping. Resin system gives easy application. Apply in one or two coats.
The Results: I’m well aware that blue is hot nail colour trend this season, but it’s not the easiest colour to wear… I’ve been getting a few strange looks since painting my nails with this vibrant cobalt blue – and it surprises me every time I catch sight of it! That aside, the polish itself is very high quality. The brush is the perfect length and width, making it very easy to paint nails (even for those of that usually end up painting more cuticle than nail!) The polish was dense enough to only paint one layer, which makes it a great time saver too. It dried quickly and after three days, there isn’t a single chip. I could hardly believe it when I saw that it was sold at Superdrug – I had imagined Selfridges or similar! For this price, I will be stocking up – but perhaps not in blue!
Best for: Professional results on a budget
TOPSHOP NAILS IN FLASH, £5 (www.topshop.com)
What they say: Fast drying, extra long wear with lasting glossy finish and perfect coverage.
The Results: This is a really punchy orange colour – it may be too bright for pale skin tones, but would look amazing on darker skin and those with a tan. I will definitely be taking it on holiday with me in August. It’s very affordable so I didn’t expect a high quality finish, but I was very pleasantly surprised. The formula is thick, so I only needed one coat – and the brush is fairly small, which makes it easy to be accurate when painting. It dried very quickly – within a couple of minutes – and lasted a few days before chipping, without a topcoat.
Best for: Wearing with a tan
ESTEE LAUDER PURE COLOR NAIL LACQUER IN TEMPTING MELON, £14 (www.esteelauder.co.uk)
What they say: Turn your fingertips into fashion statements with a wardrobe of sensational shades to add definition, polish, and style to your fingertips. Designed by Tom Pecheux, world-renowned makeup artist and Estée Lauder Creative Makeup Director.
The Results: Despite the hefty price tag, the bottle is very stylish and looks great on my dressing table – I’m coveting the whole Spring/Summer collection so I can line them up together! The brush is short and fine – it may take a little longer to paint each nail, but the result is smudge-free and very professional-looking. I was impressed by how quickly the polish dried, being touch-dry in a couple of minutes. It has a glossy finish and is durable too – I happened to be moving flat the weekend I tried this and my nails only had a couple of chips on Monday morning.
Best for: The luxury choice
ZOYA PROFESSIONAL LACQUER IN DANA , £9.25 (www.lucyrose.biz)
What they say: Zoya Nail Polishes (Lacquers) are free of toxic Toluene, Formaldehyde and DBP. Zoya Nail Polishes (Lacquers) are the longest wearing natural nail polishes available.
The Results: If you’re scared of wearing bright colours (and I definitely count myself in that group), this is a great polish to pick. It appears darker on nails – a cross between purple and fuchsia and it looks great against my pale skin tone (not usually the case with bright colours). I liked the bottle – it’s very stylish, which is great for a ‘green’ brand. A little too much polish collects on the brush, so it’s best to wipe away the excess on the neck of the bottle before painting. I found the brush very easy to use and there were no smudges to correct. The finish isn’t hugely glossy, so I added a topcoat, which will also have extended the manicure.
Best for: Pale skin tones
Feature: SPOT THE DIFFERENCE… (01.04.11)
Still suffer from problem skin? You are not alone… A recent survey revealed that spots and acne are one of the country’s top skin concerns. We’ve put six solutions to the test – from a luxury facial, to a humble tube of Sudocream…
THE ANTIBACTERIAL CONCEALER
The Solution? Dr.Hauschka Pure Care Cover Stick, £15, (www.drhauschka.co.uk)
What is it? This newly launched product promises to harmonise and clarify blemished skin. Suitable for use on the occasional spot or to help mask acne-prone skin, Pure Care Cover Sticks both disguise and help to heal skin imperfections. When used at the first sign of a breakout, the special antibacterial formula, containing Tea Tree and Manuka oils, helps to clarify the skin, while Anthyllis and Calendula support the skin’s healing processes until the condition normalises.
Who does it suit? The stick is small and lightweight, fitting into the smallest handbag. It’s perfect for professional ladies, who want a product that promises 24-hour flawless cover-up.
What do the brand say? “Natural waxes care for the skin, helping to prevent dryness, and Tapioca starch prevents shine, making Pure Care Cover Sticks an ideal choice for use underneath makeup or as a stand alone product,” explains a Dr Hauschka spokesperson.
What did our tester think? “I had a big interview and desperately needed to cover a spot that had broken out overnight. The concealer was perfect and did a great job of hiding the spot, without drying it out or making it look flaky. I’d recommend it as a concealer, but I don’t think it particularly helped my spot to heal.” Jennifer, 23
THE TARGETTED TREATMENT
The solution? LaRoche-Posay Cicaplast, £13 (Boots Nationwide)
What is it? Cicaplast is enriched with active ingredient madecassoside, which promotes cellular repair and fights inflammation. It’s also enriched with a mineral complex of copper, zinc and manganese; three known anti-bacterial agents.
Who it suits? This product suits everyone! And we’re not exaggerating – it’s not only suitable for spots, but it can also be used on sunburn, rough or flaking skin, insect bites, and chapped lips.
What do the brand say? “Damaged skin occurs when the protective barrier of the skin has been damaged by external factors such as cold, wind and repeated friction or by minor cuts or by internal factors that cause acne. The insulating silicone-based texture of Cicaplast provides a dressing-like effect, which helps protect the skin while stimulating the production of new cells and promote an optimal organization,” says La Roche-Posay’s leading dermatologist.
What did our tester think? “While the packaging and scent of this product isn’t exactly sexy, it has a fluid texture that melted into my skin when I used it – I loved that it couldn’t be seen at all. It was smooth and non-sticky, which meant it was easy to put my makeup on afterwards. I used this every day for a week on a patch of spots on my skin and they cleared up quickly, with no flaking and leaving no scaring. Plus I used it on my lips for an extra smooth finish. Definitely a necessity for my medicine cabinet!” Rosie, 34
THE FACIAL
The Solution? Elemis Visible Brilliance Facial, £117.50 (www.timetospa.co.uk)
What is it? This anti-ageing face and eye treatment instantly firms, rejuvenates and plumps up the skin, whilst helping to reduce dark circles and scars from acne. Moisturisation levels of the skin increase by up to 61%, which is proven to reduce dehydration and rough patches of skin.
Who it suits? This facial is perfect for those battling against acne – and those suffering from dehydrated skin, which is a side effect from plenty of spot treatments. The treatment smoothes skin with specialised micro-circulatory massage techniques, which are combined with powerful formulations and the two-phase Amino Active Mask to help sculpt and restore skin radiance and balance. The result is fewer dry patches and blemishes.
What do the brand say? “Touch softens, moulds and rejuvenates the skin. Facial massage is as good as taking your face to the gym for an hour. It’s the best anti-aging tool we have,” says Noella Gabriel, Director of UK Sales at Elemis.
What did our tester think? “My skin is a mess at the moment. I fly a lot with work and the severe dehydration dries my skin out severely, causing spots and dry patches all over my chin and lower cheeks. Before I had the facial I was given a complexion analysis report and then my facial was tailored to that. My masseuse was fantastic, firm but not too hard and she talked me through exactly what she was using, from Rehydrating Rosepetal Cleanser to Cellular Recovery Capsules to the papaya Enzyme Peel. The facial lasted an hour and 15 minutes and I was so relaxed I think I fell asleep a couple of times. It was utter heaven, the relaxing lights and music and luxurious surroundings were the perfect atmosphere. I left floating on a cloud – my skin feeling hydrated and my spots instantly looking better. I can’t wait to book my next treatment.” Alexandra, 41
THE OVERNIGHT TREATMENT
The Solution? Dermalogica Overnight Clearing Gel, £39 (0800 5911818)
What is it? An overnight treatment gel that helps clear skin, calm inflammation, and prevent future breakouts by reducing excess sebum, removing impaction plugs and eliminating bacteria.
Who it suits? This is great for people with oily skin, because it contains botanical aspects that help absorb the excess. Tea tree, Burdock, Eucalyptus, Golden seal and Chamomile are all contained in this product and will eliminate bacteria and camphor and cool irritation.
What do the experts think? “Adult acne has been on the rise for several years now, and stress is widely acknowledged as the root cause. Overnight Clearing Gel at night on clean skin will reduce inflamed lesions and speed healing,” says Sally Penford, Education Manager at the International Dermal Institute.
What did our tester think? “I’ve found a new beauty favourite. I adore this gel – it does exactly what it says on the tin. I suffer from spots on my chin and throughout my time of the month, nothing clears them up. But after three nights of applying a thin layer of this to skin with my fingertips, they had all but vanished. It was great going to bed knowing this amazing, non-sticky product was working for me overnight. I can’t recommend highly enough – well worth the money as you only need a small amount for the affected area.” Chloe, 27
THE SPOT-FIGHTING FOUNDATION
The Solution? Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions Liquid Makeup, £20 (www.clinique.co.uk)
What is it? This new foundation offers a clinically-proven four pronged approach to conceal, treat and prevent blemishes. It contains Salicylic Acid to rid skin of dead cells, helps to control the oil balance of your skin, and contains Hydroxydecanoic acid to control the spread of spots and Caffeine to minimise irritation.
Who it suits? Anyone who has spots and wants the appearance of an even, blemish-free complexion. Even if it’s only small pimples, this foundation gives smooth coverage and helps to heal spots too. The price point is really affordable too.
What do the brand say? “Thanks to a clever blend of ingredients that help minimise sebum without affecting the skin’s moisture balance, skin feels balanced and comfortable throughout the day. The foundation camouflages blemishes, neutralises visible skin redness, and helps to conceal the appearance of pores. Lightweight and cooling on application, the product blends easily onto skin and has impressive staying power, keeping skin looking fresh and flawless for up to eight hours” says a spokesperson at Clinique.
What did our tester think? “The packaging is sleek and stylish - and the colour suits my skintone perfectly. The foundation gives fantastic coverage, even over existing blemishes, and using it makes me feel confident that my spots are being zapped throughout the day. A must have for all makeup bags!” Victoria, 31
THE ALTERNATIVE
The Solution? Sudocream, £2.11 (Available at Supermarkets Nationwide)
What is it? Sudocream may be best-known by Mums, but it has a clever, little-known benefit.. The gentle, soothing cream soothes spots, blemishes and acne by forming a barrier to keep moisture in and damaging pollutants out. It’s ideal for all problem-skin, including the face, back or décolletage.
Who it suits? This dinky tube of cream looks more like a beauty product now it’s been repackaged into a tube, instead of a tub. It’ll suit those with a small beauty budget that want something that works quickly with no fuss.
Any celebrity endorsements? “Without doubt, this is my best beauty bargain for killing spots!” says Amanda Holden.
WHAT OUR TESTER SAID: “I love Sudocream, but I’ve never used it myself! I tested it on my spotty back and it definitely worked! After three days of using it every morning, they cleared up. It’s a little bit stinky though so avoid putting it on before a hot date!” Jayne, 38
Blog: JONATHAN LONG AND BEN COOKE – FOUNDERS OF LOCKONEGO – PICK THEIR FAVOURITE SPRING/SUMMER 2011 HAIR TRENDS (01.04.11)
Jonathan Long, Co-Founder of Lockonego says:
Hair is all about being big & bold and making statements. Taking massive inspiration from the avant-garde creations that used to be limited to haute couture shows, hairstyles are becoming increasingly daring and experimental. Now is a great time to play with different textures and interesting shapes and movement in hair. Hairstyles should be boundless and as creative as you dare.
The Modern Victorian has taken royal inspiration with a gothic twist.
• Apply UNITE Boosta Spray from roots to ends in clean, damp hair.
• To achieve the natural, romantic finish, roughly blow dry hair using fingers instead of a brush to encourage natural texture and waves. Once dry, use a wide barrelled curling tong to define curls and add extra waves to hair.
• Tong strands at the front into loose waves that hang free to soften the finished look.
• Gently pull hair away from the face and secure in place with a clear elastic hair-tie, then shake the ponytail to make it look soft and messy. The hair should look baggy from the sides.
• Finally, tuck the ponytail section under the hair at the nape of the neck and pin into place then shake again.
• Tease out some fine strands of flyaway hair for the soft, romantic finish.
Ben Cooke, Co-Founder of Lockonego says:
Get instant style credentials with contrasting textures and embrace naturally curly and frizzy hair for a dishevelled, grunge-glamour look. A cool, understated look inspired by London’s unique and fresh style, this season’s effortless hairstyle is easy to create and maintain.
The Multi-Textured Mane is a show-stopping look that combines ultra curly hair with super sleek, straight and shiny locks for a modern and elegant style that is right on trend.
• For an effective and controlled substitute to heating tongs, try using a homemade alternative. Twist tin foil to create long wands - you’ll need around 20- 30 for a whole head.
• Starting from the bottom of the head and working your way to the top, take sections of hair and wind them neatly around the wands. Twist the ends of the foil together to secure the hair in place.
• Once all sections are neatly secured, heat the hair with a diffuser for around 15-20 minutes.
• Let the hair cool and set before spritzing with UNITE Session Max Spray. Carefully unravel the hair releasing the curls.
• Run your fingers through the hair to separate the sections creating more curls wispier in texture. The more you tease the curls the more volume you will achieve.
• Using hair straighteners smooth the roots creating a striking contrast in textures and completing the look.

Spa Review: LEMONGRASS BOUTIQUE SPA, PORTMAN VILLAGE, LONDON (01.04.11)
Location: Portman Village, 8A Seymour Place, London, W1H 7NB. 0207 2587997. www.lemongrassboutiquespa.co.uk
Facilities: Lemongrass Spa is nestled in the heart of Portman Village, in Central London. It may not be far from the buzz of Oxford Street, but step through the doors and you will feel like you are worlds away. Recreating a traditional Thai spa experience, the spa offers stressed-out Londoners the chance to relax in an Eastern-themed heaven… Bright drapes adorn the walls and rows of orchids and exotic plants line the wooden floors. As well as offering hour-long Thai and Erb massages (from £60), spa-goers can choose from an extensive treatment menu, including pedicures, manicures, hot or strip wax treatments (legs, arms, bikini line), and indulgent facials. There are five treatment rooms, all which boast specially imported Thai massage benches, soothing music, and flickering candles.
Ambience: As soon as you walk through the doors of Lemongrass Boutique Spa, you will feel like you’ve been transported to the Far East... The scent of incense and lemongrass tea waft through the spa to pamper senses, whilst the calm, warm environment instantly loosens tight shoulders and soothes frazzled minds. The staff are attentive and the treatments amazing, but don’t expect the luxurious perks of a 5* spa… A fluffy robe and slippers won’t be waiting on your arrival - but to be honest, you won’t need them, as the spa is as warm as it is private…
Treatment Tested: Traditional Thai Massage, £60
As soon as I walked into the massage room I felt totally at ease. My masseuse may have been diminutive, but she had incredible strength. As she kneaded away the knots in my shoulders and back, it was slightly uncomfortable, but left me feeling like a new woman. The massage lasted 60 minutes and focused on my entire body – arms, legs, back, neck and finished with a head massage. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a seriously good massage – I still feel tension-free a week later!
Editor’s Letter (01.04.11)
During a press appointment at the Crème de la Mer counter in Selfridges last week, we got talking about how intimidating it can be to approach a luxury beauty counter. I’ve personally been worried in the past that I’d get the ‘hard sell’ as I started trying creams out on the back of my hand and soon feel pressured into handing over my credit card. So I was thrilled to see that Crème de la Mer are doing everything possible to make their counters more approachable. They want the space to be a place to try, smooth, sniff, and discuss the products with friends – there’s even a squishy white sofa to lounge on while you do it and the chance to devour complimentary champagne and chocolates. The bottom line, ladies, is that you aren’t expected to buy the products there and then. The counter staff want you to enjoying testing the products – and, if interested, take away samples to try at home. There’s no hard sell – and if you do fall in love with something (to be honest, it’s hard not to…) they will be on hand to advise you. Pay them a visit when you are next in Selfridges – I promise they won’t bite…
Origins. Anti-ageing serums launch on a daily basis – but I’m a fan of Origins skincare, so my ears pricked up when I heard about the brand’s new Anti-Ageing Serum (£45). After testing the product for 20 weeks, 57% of the testing panel saw a reduction in the overall appearance of lines and wrinkles, 61% saw improvement to visible skin lifting, and 41% saw an improvement in skin firmness. I don’t fall into the target consumer group (40’s and above), but I still tested it – and fell in love instantly with the silky texture and moisturising formula. I now have an eager tester and will fill you in on the long-term results soon. www.origins.co.uk
GiellyGreen. I love the haircare salon and brand GiellyGreen (I can’t get enough of their Argan Rescue for hair) so when I was sent GiellyGreen Body and Hand Lotion (£18) I was more than a little keen to give it a go. I have dry skin – so I was initially worried that the fluid texture wouldn’t be rich enough, but it absorbed quickly and left skin feeling ultra-hydrated. The scent, however, was the best bit – a heavenly blend of Lemon and Muguet that reminded me of traditional lemon sherbets. It was sweet, summery, and refreshing – and lingered on skin long after application. http://shop.giellygreen.com
DKNY. If you like DKNY Be Delicious, you have a treat in store – as a limited edition scent has just launched onto shelves; DKNY Be Delicious Juiced Eau de Toilette (£26.50). It smells like fresh, juicy apples – but I can also detect the promised notes of pear blossom, white peony, and violet petals. It’s perfect for summer - I have been spraying liberally and it never fails to lift my mood. And the handy 30ml bottle means you can even take it on the plane, so it’s great for holidays too. www.boots.com
TRUST. I love the story behind TRUST; the ultimate red lipstick, which has just launched at QVC. It was created by celebrity makeup artist Karen Alder, whose career was initially kickstarted by a loan from The Prince’s Trust. All proceeds from the sales of TRUST (£8) will go directly to The Prince’s Trust – and the full-cover, creamy lipstick is worth every penny. Karen Alder adds: “To be able to raise funds for The Prince’s Trust has blown me away. I’m so thankful for their support and look forward to finally giving something back.” QVC (Freeview 16, Sky Digital 640, Virgin TV 740, Freesat 800)
Tommy Bahamas. If you happen to be in the US, you must visit a branch of Tommy Bahamas, as their scented candles are absolutely divine… And while you’re at it, please could you send a couple of sets my way? I’m totally addicted to the brand’s Pineapple Cilantro Tea Lights ($10 for 12) – they smell like an exotic island paradise and fill my flat in a matter of minutes after lighting the wick. They burn cleanly, last a long time for such small tealights, and look cute too. The only problem? The brand won’t ship to the UK… Boo. www.tommybahama.com
