Editor’s Letter (25.02.11)
London Fashion Week is over for another season – and fashionistas across the capital will be breathing a collective sigh of relief. It’s not that they don’t enjoy it – the shows, the parties, the utter glamour of it all – but that their feet just won’t take another day in heels. I understand it well, as I spent the first six years of my career working in the world of fashion journalism. I ADORED fashion week – but the blisters, aching balls of feet, and bruised heels meant that I was confined to flats for weeks afterwards. Don’t worry girls – you have another six months to recover before the circus comes to town again. And in the meantime, try a warm peppermint footbath, lashings of foot cream (look for ingredients like Shea Butter, Almond Oil, and Cocoa Butter), and a week or so in the comfort of cashmere socks and UGGS. Your feet will thank you for it…
Bourjois. I’ve been a fan of Bourjois’ little round blusher pots since I was a teenager – and whilst I’ve left it for a while to try other brands, I’ve always eventually come back. So when I caught sight of these Limited Edition Paris Pots (£7.49), illustrated with Paris landmarks, I knew instantly that they were heading for my dressing table. The irresistible images are by textile designer Juliete Buré, whilst the blusher inside is available in six of the brand’s most popular shades – so there’s something to suit everyone. Definitely a collectors item... www.boots.com
Bobbi Brown. I’m a bit obsessed with hit show Mad Men at the moment (we’ve barely been able to watch anything else since I gave my husband the first three seasons for Christmas) – and I’m always inspired by Betty Draper’s immaculate makeup. This week, she looked so achingly stylish in traffic-stopping red lipstick that I needed to try out the look for myself. My tool of choice was Bobbi Brown’s new Rich Lip Colour SPF12 in Old Hollywood (£16). The colour pigment is amazing, yet it feels as light as a balm. Better still, my lips feel smooth and hydrated after a couple of days of wearing it. www.bobbibrown.co.uk
Frederic Fekkai. I’ve always wanted curly hair (I know, I know, the grass isn’t always greener…) and Frederic Fekkai’s Summer Beach Waves (£20) is probably the closest I’m going to get. Spray the genius product on wet hair and let it dry naturally. The result? Effortlessly tousled beach waves – and believe me people, it really does work. As an added bonus, it also contains a UV filter to protect hair throughout the day (whether you are on a beach or at home). And it smells divine – just like summer holidays. www.spacenk.co.uk
Nougat London. I’m not obsessive about germs – but I’ve been on public transport a lot recently and it bothers me that so many people have clung to those poles before me. So I’ve taken to carrying a bottle of hand sanitiser with me during the day. My favourite – by a clear mile – is by Nougat London. The Hands on the Run set (£15) contains a handbag-sized bottle of Hand Sanitiser and bottle of Nurturing Hand Cream, both fragranced with Tuberose & Jasmine (a luxurious alternative to the majority of hand gels, which reek of pure alcohol). www.nougatlondon.co.uk
Boo Boo. I don’t know about you, but there’s a bit of a baby boom going on at the moment. My cousin is expecting her second baby any day now – and one of my best friends is following a month later. I’ve lost track of the due dates after that – there are about 10 other friends and family members expecting, so I need a diary to keep track of it! If that sounds anything like your life at the moment, you may want to take a look at our exclusive 15% offer at Boo Boo, who make luxurious, paraben-free skincare for babies and their mums. The gift packs are stunning and will make gorgeous gifts. Click here for more info http://www.the-beauty-pages.com/specials.php
Feature: SPRING/SUMMER 2011 TREND REPORT (25.02.11)
Your essential guide to Spring/Summer 2011 Hair and Beauty Trends…
LOUD MOUTH
Bright lipsticks in a spectrum of shades featured heavily on the Spring/Summer 2011 catwalks, including Fendi, Giles, Sonia Rykiel and Diane von Furstenburg.
This trend is surprisingly wearable. Fuchsia shades tend to suit fair complexions, whereas darker skin tones can get away with more daring orange hues.
For a pretty take on the trend, try Paul & Joe’s Afternoon Delight 071, £14 (Counters Nationwide) which features enchanting packaging so that application is as enjoyable as wearing the moisturising shade. Alternatively, try Topshop Brighton Rock, £8 (www.topshop.com), a bold, chalky pink.
Or why not try a Jaffa shade? As Nicolas Degennes, Artistic Director of Givenchy Le Make Up explains, “Orange is a red revisited, modernized.” Check out Givenchy Rouge Interdit Limited Edition Candide Tangerine No.50, £18.50 (stockist number: 01932 233 824) or to really make an impact, look no further than Lord & Berry’s semi-matte Mandarino Vogue Lipstick, £10 (www.asos.com) which is a true orange, bordering on fluoro.
Simply pair with flawless skin, a slick of black kohl, and a sense of fun.
SEVEN-TEASE
Soft, tactile candyfloss-like hair was the order of the day at Marc Jacobs, Topshop Unique and Nathan Jenden as the trend for all things 1970’s makes a comeback.
Stylist Neil Moodie created the look at Topshop Unique, where he gave models’ hair a centre parting before crimping and curling random sections. For inspiration on how to translate the dramatic catwalk style to everyday wear, look to Bianca Jagger and Marie Helvin in the hedonistic heyday of Studio 54 and combine high-octane volume with glamorous curls.
For the quickest route to volumised locks, spritz dry hair with Charles Worthington Rough & Tousled Salt Spray, £6.12 (Boots Nationwide), flip hair upside down and work through with fingertips, which will give hair added oomph, help to tease and bring out natural curls. Or for longer styles, why not try Bumble & Bumble’s newest product, Bb. Texture, £21 (0800 014 7424), a hair (un) dressing crème which provides hair with grip, grit and the matte finish necessary to pull off this style. Rolando Beauchamp who styled hair into a soft, fluffy texture at Karen Walker shares his tips for using the product, “If your hair is clean and damp, use Bb. Texture - rub a little into the roots and on the ends. Rough blow-dry quickly and don’t brush the hair. You will have instantly textured, sexy hair.”
GOLDEN GLOW
This season, deep, chocolate tans give way to warm honey toned, glowing complexions - as spotted on the catwalks at Chloe, Thakoon, Pucci, and Blumarine.
It’s a look that calls to mind holidaying in the south of France - and is all about highlighting bone structure and the texture of skin, so don’t be afraid to play up glossy (but not glittery) accents. We love Benefit’s Moonbeam, £18.50 (www.benefitcosmetics.co.uk), which is a warmer version of their bestselling Highbeam highlighter, providing a pinky golden sheen when dotted onto cheekbones. Alternatively, try Urban Decay’s brand new Afterglow Glide on Cheek Tint in Indecent, £18 (selected Debenhams), a sheer peach with gold undertones, which boasts silky smooth application and a lightweight finish.
Girls on the go will love the easy application provided by Trish McEvoy Luminizer Bronze, £30 (Harvey Nichols), which is presented as a pen for targeted radiance and believable colour. It’s the ideal tool to achieve the natural sculpted look, which is key to this trend.
EYE SEA
At the Spring Summer shows, eyelids were awash with marine inspired hues such as purple, blue, green and even yellow. The look featured prominently on the catwalks of Dior, Etro, Alberta Ferretti and Elie Saab as the beauty equivalent of fashion’s colour blocking trend.
The focus of this trend is upon colour, not texture, so let your artistic side go wild choosing from opaque to high-shimmer finishes but remember to keep the rest of your makeup neutral to avoid any fantastical suggestions. Wear colour close to the lash line for a subtle hint at the trend or apply wet for an intense shock of saturated colour.
For a delectable pistachio green shade, it’s hard to beat bareMinerals Eye Colour in Bamboo, £14 (www.bareescentuals.co.uk). However, launching in March is the highly iridescent L’Oreal Paris Color Infaillible in 009 Permanent Kaki, £6.99 (0800 030 4032), which boasts an impressively long lasting formula and comprises hues of brown, yellow and green making it well suited to a variety of eye colours.
The new collection from NARS was used at shows including Marc Jacobs to create glossy, intense eye makeup inspired by Angelica Huston. Don’t miss their eyeshadow duos in soft, blendable yet highly pigmented shades. Look out for Bateau Ivre for matte cornflower and denim blues or Nouveau Monde, which contains shimmery lilac and olive gold, £23.50 each (www.narscosmetics.co.uk). Feeling confident? Brave a marzipan yellow tone such as Shiseido’s brand new Luminizing Satin Eye Color in YE306, £34 (0207 313 4774) and be surprised at how fresh it looks.
BALLERINA BUN
This season, designers have been inspired by classic dance with the release of ballet thriller, Black Swan. Perfectly prim ballerina buns were seen at Herve Ledger, Malandrino and Sophie Theallet.
Aveda was responsible for the buns at Sophie Theallet’s show where the designer wanted the models’ styling to “capture a very chic and polished nonchalance.” It’s one of the easiest styles to recreate at home. At the shows, Aveda’s new Smooth Infusion Style Prep Smoother, £18 (www.aveda.co.uk) was on hand to tame the tresses and calm flyaways. When applied to damp hair before blow drying, it helps to create a smooth surface from which to create the ballerina bun. Follow by brushing hair into a ponytail and secure high at the crown, twist the ponytail and then wrap it around itself to create a bun, secured with Kirby grips. To finish, spray palms with Ojon Extreme Hold Hairspray, £24.50 (www.ojon.co.uk) and smooth onto hair for glossy shine and hold.
Celebrity Hairdresser of the Year, Jamie Stevens (01278 683 413) explains that the style is not limited to those with long flowing tresses, “We are going to see a lot of updos in 2011. I love the evening looks which are more structured; buns high up on the head will be everywhere. If you don’t have enough hair to fill out a bun try using a doughnut. Backcomb the base of your ponytail a little and then pin the doughnut to it, wrap your hair around it making sure you cover it completely and then pin in place.”
PRETTY PASTELS
This spring/summer, the nude shades make way for a more colourful palette with models sporting pretty pastels on their nails at Isaac Mizrahi and Monique Lhuillier, to name just two.
Classic, feminine pinks are featured heavily and it’s hardly surprising, as Andrea Fulerton explains, “Pastel yellow and blue can be draining on sallow, untanned skin. Pink and lilac are a little more forgiving.” Shades are given a modern twist with glitter topcoats and pearlescent shimmers. It’s all about a crystalline finish, as OPI have recognised with the launch of their latest collection, Femme du Cirque. Paint nails with In The Spot-Light Pink then top with I Juggle.. Men, £10.50 (www.lenawhite.co.uk) a clear polish with colourful micro-glitter particles. Alternatively, try catwalk favourite CND in either Perfectly Bare Shimmer or our favourite, Copper Shimmer, £9.95 (0113 217 3813) and be transfixed as the colours catch the light.
Somewhat surprisingly, there’s also a mini trend appearing with the return to the creamy mint green shades seen a few seasons ago. This unexpected colour heralds the move towards the boldest brights which will be adorning nails as we reach high summer. Look out for Leighton Denny Inside Scoop, £11 (www.leightondenny.com) or to try the colour on a budget, pick up a bottle of Andrea Fulerton’s Nail Boutique Colour in Jade, £4.99 (Superdrug Nationwide).
Tried & Tested: HYDRATING LIP GLOSSES (25.02.11)
Can’t decide between a gloss and a balm? There’s no need to compromise. We’ve put six glosses to the test, each promising long-lasting hydration…
CHANTECAILLE BRILLIANT GLOSS, £23 (www.spacenk.co.uk)
What they say: A high shine gloss made from a hydrating and enriching formula that imparts rich colour and brilliant shine. An innovative system ensures long-lasting wear whilst microspheres of organic wheat protein-linked sugars safely plump lips for a perfect pout.
The Results: I love makeup and am happy to invest in good products – but I still felt this was very pricey for a lip gloss when I first saw the price, as mine don’t often last long. I received it in the post in the morning and tried it straight away, just before eating breakfast – and fully expected to have to reapply afterwards as it’s not really a fair test! I was very pleasantly surprised though, as the gloss stayed put and was still very visible afterwards. The fact that it lasts a long time meant that my lips felt supple and hydrated for longer – and in between applications, they definitely felt smoother and softer too. I tried “Allure”, which looks dark in the tube but gives a very natural rosy tint to lips when applied. It’s definitely worth paying a little extra.
Best for: Staying power
BOURJOIS EFFET 3D LIPGLOSS, £6.99 (www.boots.com)
What they say: A formula enriched with micro crystalline wax for a deep, voluminous and ultra-shiny result. The specially designed brush applicator delivers ultra-glossy precise results with ease.
The Results: This lip gloss promises eight hours of hydration, which is quite a bold claim – as surely no lip gloss could last that long. However, I loved the colour I was given to try – Brun Rose, a lovely dusky pink - and I also liked the brush applicator, which made applying it quick and easy. The gloss has a silky, rather than sticky, texture and a very subtle (but lovely) floral scent. It did last a reasonable amount of time – half an hour on a night out sipping drinks, which really isn’t bad. The hydration, however, lasted far longer. My lips are usually dry and quite sore, but this gloss gave them the same level of hydration that I’d expect with a rich lip balm. I’d definitely recommend it for others with dry pouts – it’s great value and I love the colour and shine.
Best for: Dry lips
MÁDARA MOONKISS TINTED LIPGLOSS, £9.90 (www.pravera.co.uk)
What they say: MÁDARA decocare organic moonkissed tinting lip gloss gives a cool fresh rosy shine to your lips and at the same time moisturises your lips.
The Results: My beauty products aren’t always organic and green – but when it comes to putting something on my lips, I do like the idea of going natural. I loved the fact that the main ingredient in this gloss is Baltic Rose Hip – and that the colour and shimmer comes from natural plant minerals and mica. The texture is rich and hydrating, leaving my lips feeling silky smooth. And it gives just a hint of colour, so would be equally flattering to all skin tones. The only thing I didn’t like about this gloss was the taste when it was on my lips, which seemed almost synthetic – ironic, considering there’s nothing synthetic in it! I’d probably avoid it on a night out if I was sipping drinks – but for day time, I’m a big fan.
Best for: Fans of natural beauty
BAREMINERALS NATURAL LIP GLOSS IN GLAZED DONUT, £14 (www.lookfantastic.com)
What they say: Introducing a revolutionary lip gloss with ingredients only found in the earth. Bare Escentuals bareMinerals Natural Lip Gloss in Glazed Donut is a non-sticky, non-tacky smooth and moisturising formula with 100% natural ingredients and minerals.
What they say: Bright lipsticks and glosses don’t suit me, so I usually stick to a slick of clear gloss for shine. This gloss has a pale nude tint and subtle shimmer – it’s a natural look, which would work equally well for the office or a night out. It contains Cupuacu Butter to keep lips feeling soft and moisturised, which is a big bonus as my lips are prone to dryness and cracking. After a few days of using this, my lips definitely feel soothed and suppler – and I am convinced they are smoother too. I like the sweet scent – it smells exactly like donuts, and the only downside is that it’s making me crave Krispy Cremes!
Best for: A natural look
BURBERRY LIP GLOW NATURAL LIP GLOSS, £19 (www.harrods.com)
What they say: Plump, moisturise and add a hint of fresh colour with Burberry Lip Glow. This natural lip gloss has a ceramide complex formula that fills fine lines from within, leaving lips supple, and glowing with natural highlights.
The Results: The first thing to mention is the stylish packaging! It’s worth the price alone – and it would make a great gift for someone. I was interested to read that the gloss would have an anti-ageing effect, plumping and smoothing lips – I don’t usually wear lipstick as it settles into the fine lines, so this is definitely something that would convince me to invest. It has a smooth, creamy texture and seems to sit on top of lips (filling lines, as it promises) rather than being absorbed into them. For that reason, I didn’t notice it having any long term hydrating effects – but lips feel soothed and supple when wearing it. I love the pigment quality of the colour (I tried Brick Red) – it’s every bit as good as lipstick, with the added bonus of a glossy shine.
Best for: Smoothing lips
JEMMA KIDD HI-SHINE SILK TOUCH LIP GLOSS, £14 (www.lookfantastic.com)
What they say: For a subtle sheen and fuller looking lips, glide on Jemma Kidd Hi-Shine Silk Touch Lip Gloss in Fuchsia, a non-sticky, long-lasting lip gloss with anti-oxidant vitamin E to protect and moisturise the lips, and a light scent of grapefruit oil.
The Results: I love the texture of this gloss – it feels rich, creamy and luxurious. It instantly hydrates and soothes my lips and leaves them looking plumper and smoother. It’s a refreshing change to the thick, sticky glosses I’ve used in the past – especially when the wind blows, as I’m used to my hair sticking to lips! The gloss gives just a hint of colour, so it’s better suited to a natural look for office or weekends, than it is to a glamorous evening look. With the creamy texture, it doesn’t seem to last as long – but in between applications, my lips felt very soft, smooth and cushiony, so it does a great job of conditioning skin.
Best for: A hint of colour
Spa Review: BLYTHSWOOD SQUARE HOTEL AND SPA, GLASGOW (25.02.11)
Location: Blythswood Square Hotel and Spa, 11 Blythswood Square, Glasgow, G2 4AD. 0141 2488888. http://www.townhousecompany.com/blythswoodsquare/
Facilities: Previously the rather grand home of the Royal Scottish Automobile Club, the Blythswood Square Hotel has managed to retain all of the sophisticated glamour of a bygone era in its multi-million pound makeover, while giving it a luxurious modern update with a distinct Scottish twist. ‘Calm’, ‘tranquil’, and ‘luxurious’ are words that spring to mind when you step into the 10,000 sq. metres that encompass the Blythswood Spa, where the rich colour scheme create the feeling of being in a cosy cocoon. As well as plenty of treatment rooms, where you can enjoy a special treat from their extensive treatment list, you can also spend time relaxing in the thermal suite and the gorgeous relaxation pools or even curl up and read a book in one of the many relaxation areas scattered throughout the spa. When it comes to accommodation, Blythswood doesn’t disappoint - the rooms were perhaps a little masculine in their decor for my taste, but nonetheless luxurious with some nice touches – gorgeous fabrics and quirky furniture featured everywhere in our ‘classic’ standard room. I loved the impressive marble bathroom. The restaurant, located in what was formally the grand ballroom of the RSAA’s headquarters, is stunning and thankfully the food compliments the beautiful setting. We plumped for the market menu, which is amazing value at only £20 for three courses, with a bottle of the Malborough Pinot Noir, which was also well-priced at only £30.
Ambience: The five-star service means that you’re immediately put at your ease when you arrive at the hotel. Nothing is too much trouble and the well-informed staff are happy to advise on the menu and drink choices in the restaurant and bar which both have a great buzz in the evening.
Treatment Tested: Turus Hot Stone Massage, £80
More expensive than your average spa treatment, but this treatment takes massage to a whole new level in both relaxation and luxury. In keeping with the hotel’s Scottish theme, organic local ingredients like juniper oil, milk thistle and cedarwood are combined with the restorative properties of the hot stones and deep tissue massage to give a sublime relaxation experience. Bliss!
Prices start from £120 to stay at the Blythswood but to find out more details about the hotel including special offers log onto http://www.townhousecompany.com/blythswoodsquare/

Blog: EMMA FORBES – BRITISH TV AND RADIO PRESENTER AND STYLE EXPERT – DISCUSSES WHAT ‘BEAUTY’ MEANS TO HER (25.02.11)
I love beauty products. I think I’m a marketing persons ‘dream’! I want to believe the promises, am a sucker for good packaging, and I love a good ‘smell’ – particularly if it’s aromatherapy-based, rather than an artificial smell. I think its important to use a good beauty regime - the more you take care of your skin, the better it will be in the long run... And that’s what you need to worry about – the long term!
My favourite beauty products are ones that I have tried and really seen a difference by using. Some things I have been using for years, and other things I am a recent converter! I adore Elizabeth Arden’s 8 Hour Cream – it’s always a staple in my handbag and I never leave home without it. You can use it for anything (though brilliant at this time of year) lips, skin, nails – its genius. I also love the Darphin facial oils – they smell divine, but I don’t use them all the time. However, when you feel like your skin needs an extra ‘boost’ they are perfect. I also can’t live without Carmex - and am particularly happy with their new mint and cherry versions! I also love Oil of Olay – I think it’s a range that is tried, trusted and tested – and delivers… Not too expensive either which is always great!
Over the years my makeup routine has evolved - but I now feel that I have a routine that works and I’m religious at making sure I never go to bed without fully cleansing and moisturising. I have, however, become far more careful about suncare – and using much higher factors particularly on my face. I do love being ‘tanned’ though, so I use tinted moisturisers. Kiehls is amazing, as is Laura Mercier.
I founded my new website ForbesStyle as I love talking about products, sourcing new things and keeping up to date with what’s out there – particularly in the beauty market from products to treatments – so the site gives me the perfect reason to do it!
I have worked with lots of makeup artists over the years, so I can get some good tips and trends… For party eyes and “getting the look” my good friend Christian Vermaak (who styles Dannii Minogue’s hair and makeup for the X Factor) has done a 3 and ½ minute guide on my website with me – which shows you how easy it is, as that was always my issue of going from day to nigh. The adding of lashes, mascara and some gorgeous colours – you can do it too!

Popping to the supermarket? Get ready to be beautified, as supermarket giant Tesco has just added to their beauty range and introduced hair and beauty treatments in selected stores.
Tesco already sells clothing, entertainment, mobile phone contracts and electronics alongside their groceries - so it was probably inevitable that sooner or later, they’d introduce beauty treatments.
On offer are men and ladies’ hair styling and colouring treatments, waxing, threading and manicures, with no appointments necessary and starting at just £5.
Andrew Carpenter, Beauty Category Manager at Tesco said, “We know beauty treatments are very popular with many people these days and we feel the convenience of great value and quality services from manicures to full waxing and styling could be a success with customers.”

Tried & Tested: GLITTERY NAIL POLISHES (18.02.11)
This season, it’s all about glitter – so grab a bottle of sparkly nail polish and give your nails a makeover. We’ve put six bottles to the test.
TOPSHOP NAILS IN GYPSY NIGHT, £5 (www.topshop.com)
What they say: Fast drying, extra long wear with lasting glossy glitter finish and perfect coverage.
The Results: I usually wear pink or nude shades on my nails, so I was a bit daunted when I first set eyes on the black bottle! I was pleasantly surprised though – the polish is packed with multicoloured glitter, which gives the polish a softer, girly edge, which makes it very wearable. It’s stylish and eye-catching and I had a couple of compliments on a night out, which I’ve never had before with nail polish! I needed three coats for the perfect result, so it isn’t the quickest polish to apply – but it was touch-dry in a couple of minutes. The brush is quite small too, so it’s easy to be accurate when painting.
Best for: Making a statement
MAVALA ALL THAT GLITTERS NAIL DUO, £7.95 for set of 2 (www.lookfantastic.com)
What they say: Mavala Nail Colours are perfect little pots of colour that won't dry out before you reach the bottom. Mavala nail colours are toluene, formaldehyde and DBP free.
The Results: This duo contains a solid bright pink colour (Freshly) and a sparkly pale pink (Pink Diamond), which can be worn together or on their own. At first, I decided to apply the sparkly polish alone – and I fell in love with it instantly! The clear base is packed with glitter particles, which are really, really sparkly (other glitter polishes I’ve tried have been a bit dull). One coat is enough for a subtle result, but I preferred it with two or three coats when the glitter was denser. It lasted really well – at least a week without a single chip. When I removed it, I tried wearing the two colours together. The look was a little too ‘pink and fluffy’ for me, but for fans of the colour, the polish was vivid and equally long lasting. It’s brilliant value for money.
Best for: Versatility
BOURJOIS 1 SECONDE NAIL POLISH IN 18, £5.99 (www.boots.com)
What they say: Bourjois 1 Seconde Nail Polish is ultra quick to apply thanks to its patented fan effect brush which adapts to the size of each nail.
The Results: The brush design is genius – it fans out as you sweep it over the nail, meaning that painting each finger really only does take one minute. However, the glitter in this polish isn’t very dense, so I needed at least three layers to achieve the result I was after. It was still incredibly quick to paint all ten nails and the polish was touch-dry within a couple of minutes – so it’s a great quick fix when you are short of time. The base of the polish is clear, with pale pink glitter that shines blue, green and red in certain lights. It’s a very subtle effect – and would work well for a relaxed day or office look. It’d also work perfectly as a sparkly top coat.
Best for: Subtle effect
NARS NAIL POLISH IN ARABESQUE, £13.50 (www.narscosmetics.co.uk)
What they say: A unique formula with new technology designed to improve flexibility, durability, wear and gloss properties. This longwearing formula provides a tough, durable chip-resistant finish and also has added UV protection to prevent polish discoloration.
The Results: You can’t fault the packaging – a stylish bottle, generous volume of polish, and medium-sized brush that is very easy to control. The dusty pink glitter is suspended in a clear base – and only two coats were needed. My first impression was that it’s very, very girly – not surprising given the ballet-themed name – and would probably only work if toughened up with a leather jacket and biker boots! I still think that the polish would be more universally appealing if the pink glitter was broken up with a little silver, but it did grow on me as the week went on. The best thing, however, was the incredible staying power. It’s now seven days since I painted my nails and there isn’t a sign of a chip! It’s very high-quality polish and I’m really keen to try more from the collection.
Best for: Staying power
MODELS OWN DISCO MIX, £5 (www.modelsownit.com)
What they say: Stay on-trend right down to the tips of your toes. Creamy or pearly, glittery or neon, all our nail polishes glide on smoothly and are hardwearing and long lasting. Designed for fashion and fun!
The Results: I’m a nail varnish junkie and own hundreds of bottles – from expensive bottles from fashion labels, to budget brands like Models Own. I like this brand for the generous size of the bottles and the huge selection of colours – there’s a bottle to match every outfit. This clear polish contains hundreds of tiny specks of royal blue and bright purple glitter. It’s a unique and eye-catching mix – but is best reserved for nights out as it makes quite a statement! The brush is fairly long and thin, making it easy to control, so no smudges or mistakes. I needed three coats to cover my nails with glitter – but it dries quickly, so that is no problem. The end texture is a little scratchy, so is best sealed with a top coat. It’s not for everyone – but if you like having fun with your nails on nights out, I would recommend it.
Best for: Nights out.
PRECISION NAIL LACQUER IN TAUPE IT OFF WITH SPRINKLES, £5.99 (http://parksideprecision.com)
What they say: Created by Californian based Nail Experts - Lamoon Beauty (Lamoon means ‘the moon’, as in the shape of our nail beds), Precision Nail’s have been formulated using the finest ingredients for an unbelievable gloss shine and are free of harmful ingredients, such as Toluene, Formaldehyde, and Dibutyl Phtalate.
The Results: The bottle looks premium, so I couldn’t believe it when I saw the high street price. The bottle is functional too, with ridges on the lid to help un-tighten, an easy-to-grip bottle shape, and short, easy-to-control brush to prevent mistakes. The clear polish is packed with tiny flecks of pale pink glitter – much smaller than other polishes I’ve tried – and two to three coats gave a uniform glittery result. Despite the sparkle, the small flecks and pale colour make the polish very subtle and sophisticated – a refreshing change for those who usually stick to nude shades. I would wear this in the office, as well as weekends and evenings out.
Best for: Sophisticated result
Blog: NIKI MOORES – OF MICHAEL VAN CLARKE SALON, LONDON – DISCUSSES BEING NAMED ‘FASHIONISTA OF 2010’, HER SPIRITUAL ENLIGHTENMENT, AND HOW SHE IS MAKING HER CLIENTS FEEL AND LOOK FABULOUS! (18.02.11)
Apparently I’m a Fashionista - or so the ‘Fashionista of 2010’ award acclaims. After years of chasing the dream; a degree in Fashion, assisting session stylists and setting up test shoots, it seemed my hard work has finally come to fruition. In January last year, I even moved to Bethnal Green, East London - the hub of trend and cool, a mere stone’s throw from Brick Lane, Spittalfields, Shoreditch and Dalston - but instead of being sucked in by my consumer cravings, I found the London Buddhist Centre.
Revelling in this tranquility, I feel I’ve changed as a person and a stylist. At first I thought there may be some conflicting interest with wanting to pursue the path to enlightenment and the nature of the fashion industry; but on reflection, my career choice and my position – straddling the fashion and beauty industries - began to make complete sense. I can now truly appreciate the roots of my trade (excuse the pun) the very essence of why I chose to become a hairstylist; to make people look and feel gorgeous and happy about themselves!
This self-realisation couldn’t have come at a better time. I’m noticing an increasing number of clients coming into the salon, full of colds and looking windswept and un-kempt. It is now that I can work my magic; provide treatments and complete makeovers, offer style advice, and boost self confidence.
To keep your hair looking healthy and shiny - despite woolly-hat-hair and central heating - get into a weekly routine of doing hair treatments. Without a doubt I’d recommend the Michael Van Clarke Three More Inches range – it does what it says on the tin! There is a Pre Shampoo conditioning treatment that you can slap on to your DRY hair in less than a minute, leave it on for at least an hour or even sleep with it on the hair. It dries clean in a couple of hours, so doesn’t mess the pillow, then shampoo and condition as normal next morning. The 3MI system really works, especially on finer damaged and processed hair, you’ll notice the difference in how your hair feels straight away, but the long term benefit is that your hair will look thicker, more youthful and it will stay healthier whilst it grows longer (if you want it to!)

Editor’s Letter (18.02.11)
Can someone please design a nail varnish remover that removes glittery polish in a few seconds? I’m sick of wasting time attempting to remove it – and to be honest, it’s putting me off applying it in the first place… If there’s one thing that will convince me to take the glitter plunge again, however, it’s this week’s Tried & Tested, which is full of so many sparkly polishes that my eyes went a bit funny when preparing the images. If you haven’t read it, click here. Our testers had fun trying the latest launches - and their recommendations are well worth treating yourself to. I just don’t envy you when it’s time to take it off…
Clinique. Clinique’s new Bottom Lash Mascara (£10) is quite simply genius – and I’m convinced it will quickly become a makeup bag staple. The tiny wand is great for applying mascara to those fine lower lashes that are hard to reach with traditional mascara wands (without ending up with unattractive smudges!) and the results speak for themselves… It evenly coats lashes and boosts length - I never realised I had so many lower lashes or how long they were! As an added bonus, the wand is also great for reaching upper lashes in the far corners, which sometimes get missed. www.clinique.co.uk
Swarovski. I’m been excited about the launch of Swarovski’s Makeup Jewels (from £48) for a while now – and they have finally launched online at Selfridges.com (with a store launch in early March). The brand describes the contents of the jewels as “an innovative formula, created from crystal and pearl, which adds luminosity and shine to the skin…” Essentially, they are highlighters – but the early reviews I’ve seen are very, very positive. And as this season is all about radiant, glowing skin, they look like a winner to me!
Pai. If your hands are suffering from months of cold weather and central heating – I know mine have been looking at least twice their age – I recommend Pai’s Fragonia & Sea Buckthorn Instant Hand Therapy Cream (£16). The ingredient Fragonia is famed for its anti-inflammatory properties, while Seabuckthorn, Rosehip, and Grape Seed extracts promote cell regenreration and skin restructure. But the proof is in the fact that it hydrates my hands for a good 12 hours, leaving them looking smoother and plumper. www.paiskincare.com
Models Own. I’m loving the latest shades from Models Own for Spring/Summer 2011 (£5 each) – there’s something to suit every mood - from nudes, to blue, and brights, to moody darks. My personal favourite is Black Swirl – an intriguing mix of black and metallic silver. It looks like brushed metal and is much softer than normal black hues - this colour would suit whatever you’re wearing, day or night. I’ve also tried the bright Pink Fever on my toes and it looks great too. Which one shall I try next…? Boots nationwide
Whittlebury Hall. If the long, cold winter is starting to get you down, maybe it’s time for a spa break? And this month, you are in luck – as Whittlebury Hall Hotel & Spa in Northamptonshire is offering readers of The-Beauty-Pages.com overnight spa breaks for just £75 per person. Readers, it doesn’t get much better than that – so take advantage by clicking here for all the details. And relax….
Treatment Review: AMAZING LASHES EYELASH EXTENSIONS, NATIONWIDE (18.02.11)
What it promises: Amazing Lash Extensions promise to boost the look of your natural lashes, making them appear longer and thicker using natural looking synthetic lash fibres that last for up to four weeks. The treatment makes lashes look darker and denser, so there’s no need for mascara. You can shower, exercise – even swim – without worrying about them falling out. Regular in-fills help to maintain results in between treatments.
What happens: The first step was to have a consultation to judge whether I was suitable for lashes – they take looking after so if you power shower more than twice a day or the type to fiddle they may not be suitable. I was also shown a series of ‘before’ and ‘after’ pictures so I could choose a look I liked - and a full medical questionnaire was conducted to decide which glue would secure my lashes (there are a number of variants, including sensitive for sensitive eyes). Once everything was OK, I was prepared for my treatment. My eye makeup was removed and lower lashes taped down – and all that was left to do was to lie on the couch covered in a warm duvet while my therapist applied each individual lash to my lashes using a specially formulated black glue that helps to make the finished result look seamless. The therapist works from eye to eye and the whole process takes between an hour and 90 minutes, depending on how many lashes you need to fill out your own. Once all the lashes had been applied and brushed through to separate, a sealer was applied to give finished lashes a glossy look.
The Results: It was hard to believe that lash extensions would make much of a difference as I’m lucky enough to have thick lashes naturally – but extensions made them look instantly longer and the curved extensions gave my eyes a sexier look. I was told that I would need infills every 2-3 weeks to maintain the look, which is a commitment - but it’s definitely worth it to have full-on lashes. I’m thrilled with the result!
Price: From £75, with infills from £35

Blog: VANESSA STOTTOR – DIRECTOR AT MARY KAY – GIVES HER 10 TOP SKINCARE TIPS FOR WINTER (11.02.11)
Spring might be just around the corner – but as we head further into the winter months, the cold wind and freezing temperatures can create havoc as our skin becomes dry, chapped and chafed.
The face is the one part of our body that remains exposed for the duration of the long winter months, which makes it an important area to nurture.
Below are my ten top tips to keep skin looking healthy and glowing until we unwrap ourselves for the summer months!
1. Nourishment. Whether you have dry, combination or oily skin, a daily skincare routine suitable for your skin type is of the utmost importance to ensure nourishment. Always make sure that you cleanse, tone and moisturise. Even oily skin needs to be moisturised regularly.
2. Hydration. All skin types need extra hydration and treatment at night time. A skincare routine in the evenings is important as the skin repairs itself while you sleep!
3. Mask. Apply a moisturising face mask once or twice a week to give your skin a boost. Frequency of use will depend on the product and your skin type.
4. Be consistent. Avoid constantly changing or mixing skincare product ranges. As we experience constant temperature change by moving from cold air to central heating and vice versa, the skin needs to know where it stands.
5. Keep things lukewarm. Washing your face with water that is too hot dries out the skin. Lukewarm water is best.
6. Buff weekly. As grim as it sounds, microscopic mites live beneath the surface of the skin, but a weekly buff with a polish will keep skin healthy and glowing.
7. Balance is good. Food and water contributes in a big way to the condition of our skin. Drink lots of water as the skin can also become thirsty - and enjoy a balanced diet.
8. Protection is prevention. It is still important to use an SPF to protect our skin from harsh elements. A moisturiser with a SPF is a quick fix.
9. Add a little more. Add a little moisturiser to your face after blow drying your hair. The heat from the hairdryer can leave the skin feeling dehydrated.
10. Remember lips and hands. Dried, chapped and flaky lips don’t have to be a staple during winter. Buff away dry skin with an exfoliator and follow with a soothing balm to moisturise. Use a rich moisturiser to keep hands feeling soft. Remember that night is the best time to treat lips and hands!

Tried & Tested: FRAGRANCED DEODORANTS (11.02.11)
Mix up your morning routine with a fragranced deodorant. We’ve put six to the test…
CLINIQUE AROMATICS ELIXIR ANTI-PERSPIRANT DEODORANT, £13 (www.clinique.co.uk)
What they say: Kicks off with toning and astringent qualities that also give the sense of calm. The mid-notes begin with a warm oakmoss scent and a touch of a clean floral scent. Finally, you'll notice the seductive scent of patchouli with a warm, woody scent. Rose essence, sandalwood and chamomile have toning and astringent qualities that also give a sense of calm.
The Results: At first glance you wouldn’t know that it’s a Clinique product, unless you know the Aromatics Elixir range. The packaging is nice though, if a little bit old fashioned. The price, which is quite expensive for a deodorant, is acceptable considering it’s a roll-on that will last quite some time (and better for the environment, which they don’t mention, but it’s a persuader for me!). The scent isn’t bad – it’s very flowery and again, a bit old fashioned. But it’s not like perfume where the scent stays with you: you just smell clean. Overall it feels quite grown-up and it works (I smell good after a long day at the office and no re-application) and would consider buying it again.
Best for: Clean scent
MARKS & SPENCER FLORAL COLLECTION IRIS ANTIPERSPIRANT ROLL-ON, £1.75 (www.marksandspencer.com)
What they say: A gently fragranced and alcohol free high-performance antiperspirant roll-on, specially formulated to reduce stinging.
The Results: The container is attractive enough to go on display on a dressing table or bathroom shelf, with quite an arty picture of lovely blue irises on it. The roll-on works smoothly and the texture is soft and pleasant. It dries quickly, without marking clothing and without leaving that horrible dry powdery residue on the skin that you get with some roll-on deodorants. As I wear perfume every day, I wondered about a clash of scents – however this deodorant has a very subtle scent, just a hint of floral perfume. I shall certainly be buying this product as it is really nice to use, excellent value, and the deodorant effect lasts throughout the day.
Best for: Great value
YVES SAINT LAURENT ELLE DEODORANT NATURAL SPRAY, £27.50 (www.debenhams.com)
What they say: As soon as applied, Elle Deodorant Natural Spray from Yves Saint Laurent, with its delicate fragrant formula and enriched by smoothing agents, brings a sensation of immediate coolness, for efficiency and well-being all day long.
The Results: The packaging is very girly and elegant, which I liked, and the deodorant itself was more of a body spray or perfume than a deodorant, which gave it a slightly more expensive feel. What I really liked about this product is that I can spray it on my clothes and on my body and the smell is lovely and fresh not too heavy, with a distinct floral scent. However, it is really pricey and I’m not sure it fulfils its main purpose as a deodorant. I’d be put off spending that much on it as a deodorant but knowing it works more as a perfume spray I would buy it again.
Best for: Treating yourself
AUBREY ORGANICS CALENDULA BLOSSOM NATURAL DEODORANT SPRAY, £8.16 (www.aubreyorganicsuk.co.uk)
What they say: If you prefer the convenience of a spray, this herbal deodorant will keep you naturally fresh all day without irritation. Fights odour with antioxidant vitamin E, plus calamine and calendula blossom oils.
The Results: The packaging was a bit hippy looking but I could see I was going to get a lot out of the spray bottle as it’s quite large. You only need one or two sprays per underarm (I overdid it the first time and it ran down my arm!). Because it’s a spray rather than an aerosol there is a degree of wetness but I didn’t mind that too much and I actually preferred it to the chemically smell you get with a normal spray. I wasn’t sure if this would deliver because of the natural ingredients but it really did, and the smell is light and fresh and didn’t clash with my perfume. Really liked the eco-credentials of the company too. Not cheap but worth it.
Best for: Eco warriors
TISSERAND WILD ROSE & LEMON LEAF DEODORANT, £5.65 (www.tisserand.com)
What they say: Naturally active and revitalising, for all-day freshness. With a fresh floral-citrus aroma, this deodorant contains soothing ethically harvested rose oil, balancing organic rose geranium oil, toning ethically harvested lemon leaf oil, refreshing ethically harvested pink grapefruit oil, protecting extract of organic green tea and antioxidant-rich extract of organic hawthorn.
The Results: The packaging was nice and not too ‘health-food shop’, and it had a nice fat roller-ball bit. I sometimes find rose a bit overpowering as a fragrance, but in this it’s cut through by the geranium, lemon and pink grapefruit. The deodorant went on smoothly, but felt oddly cold. I was worried the fragrance was going to be strong as it smelt quite full-on as I put it on – so much so that I didn't put any other perfume on for fear of it clashing, but actually it's faded to a gentle 'soapy' scent. I haven't done any major exercise to put it through its paces, but I have done general mummy duties and I still smell lovely. It's all organic, ethically sourced and vegan which aren't normally a big concern but certainly nice to know. I would recommend it although at over a fiver I think it's a bit steep for deodorant, but it is a lovely product that really works and leaves your conscience smelling as fresh as your pits.
Best for: Organic fans
CLARINS EAU DYNAMISANTE DEODORANT, £12.95 (www.cheapsmells.com)
What they say: Clarins Eau Dynamisante Deodorant is great especially when used in conjunction with Eau Dynamisante. It provides immediate, long-lasting freshness and is ultra gentle, suitable for all skin types. It contains natural ingredients such as orange and lemon extract and can be used in the morning or at any time of the day for additional freshness.
The results: I am already a big fan of the Eau Dynamisante range, but had always drawn the line at the deodorant. This was a pleasant surprise though. The packaging was the distinctive Clarins red – definitely something I’d be proud to display on my bathroom shelf. One spritz under each arm left me smelling of the gorgeous scent and fresh all day long. I actually topped up with the fragrance too, but I think this deodorant would still make you feel fresh and clean alone. It did sting slightly after shaving but that’s my only criticism. It’s such a fresh, zingy holiday smell I think I will definitely buy it again.
Best for: All-day freshness
Editor’s Letter (11.02.11)
I’m not a big fan of Valentines Day. My husband and I celebrated it for the first few years of our relationship, as we felt we should – sat so close to couples either side of us in over-packed restaurants that we may as well have shared a table, eating food and wine at vastly inflated prices. We soon realised that dinner, cards, and presents meant more on any other day of the year, when we weren’t expected to do it. I don’t begrudge those that enjoy the day, as I know that some people love it – but we will be staying in on February 14th to avoid the doe-eyed crowds. If there’s one reason to welcome Valentines Day, however it’s the chance to enjoy a few rose-tinted beauty products – so this week, take your pick from the rose-tinted selection below!
Diptyque This is one of two Diptyque limited candles for Valentines 2011 – Rose and Eros, collectively named Roseros (£55 for the pair). They look incredible and smell even better (I wish I could invent scratch and sniff internet so you could experience it too). ‘Rose’ is a romantic celebration of the garden rose, with Piaget Rose, Egyptian Basil, Blackcurrant, Violet, and Musks. Whilst Eros is spicier, containing Rugosa Rose, Myrrh essence, Cedar and Sandalwood. I always expect big things from Diptyque and I wasn’t disappointed. www.johnlewis.com
By Terry. Regular readers of this letter will know that I love the brand By Terry, which is available at Space NK – so the launch of a new volumising, firming, anti-ageing lipstick is big news in The-Beauty-Pages.com HQ. The Rouge Terrybly Lipstick (£30.50) is quite ingenious, boasting exclusive technology to plump and reshape lips, without drying the skin. It’s the ideal product if you’ve noticed your pout thinning or becoming obviously lined. And as we expect from By Terry – there are 15 highly pigmented colours to suit everybody! www.spacenk.co.uk
Lush. Want to be brave with your fragrance this Valentines Day? Look no further than Lush Solid Perfume in Lust (£4.50). It contains oodles of pure Jasmine absolute (a known aphrodisiac), Ylang Ylang, Rose, Vanilla and Sandalwood. Creator Mark Constantine says: “I wanted a really, really sexy, dirty, lustful fragrance and that’s what I’ve done. I’ve done fragrances like that before, but I’d never had the nerve to let them be. British people have a problem with sexy fragrances; there’s always this feeling of having to dress the thing up and put a bonnet on it. This time, I went all the way.” 01202 668545
The Green Grocery. If that sounds a little frightening, I have another solid fragrance suggestion for you – Love Letter by The Green Grocery (£9.99). Not only is the packaging really quite stunning (and possibly worth the purchase alone), but it contains toned down notes of the same sensual notes contained in Lush’s version above, so it is far better suited to wall flowers. The blend of Rose, Jasmine, and Sandalwood are sexy, yet very feminine – and all ingredients are certified 100% organic by the OF&G, with packaging both recycled and recyclable. www.green-grocery.co.uk
Tiffany. If there are any men out there still searching for the perfect Valentines gift for someone special, I have found it for you… Tiffany’s Paloma Picasso Kiss Pendant (£140) will bring a smile to any lucky recipient’s face. The sterling silver pendant is hung from a 16” chain, with the design inspired from Paloma Picasso’s own handwriting. I would love to receive this – and if you don’t do Valentines like us, I think it’d make an equally fabulous gift for birthdays, anniversaries, engagement or wedding presents. It will win you serious brownie points! www.tiffany.co.uk
Feature: EASY ON THE EYE (11.02.11)
They’re the first things people look at… So make eyes a focal point with these fabulous products for perfect peepers.
DE-PUFFERS
After the late nights of the party season and the following dark mornings of January, we all need a little help to shift that ‘puffy eye’ look in time for spring.
Hylexin, £52 (www.victoriahealth.com) from Bremenn Laboratories targets the dark pigmentation that goes hand in hand with puffy, tired eyes. Hylexin has been shown to help ‘oxidise’ haemoglobin by optimizing enzymatic activity, causing the red-blue pigmentation to fade. Studies also confirm that Hylexin actually helps strengthen the capillary matrix to help stop the ‘leaking’, so that the orbital eye area is protected against further damage. It might all sound quite complex – but the clinical trial results are impressive, so it’s well worth checking out.
No Old Bags Allowed from Anatomicals, £5 (www.hqhair.com) is a refreshing gel with arnica and orange flower water – and it’s a great name too! The packaging is fun, but this is a real performer too, and aims to help diminish eye bags and leave you with ‘an appearance that belies the date on your birth certificate’. Great value.
Or try Bliss Baggage Handler, £21 (www.timetospa.co.uk). A lightweight, hydrating gel that glides onto the skin and is easily absorbed. It contains cucumber and cornflower extracts plus wheat proteins to help reduce wrinkles and puffy eyes, leaving you looking bright-eyed.
WRINKLE-BEATERS
Eyes are the first place we tend to see the signs of ageing - so stop wrinkles in their tracks by investing in some high-performance products to smooth, lift and refine the delicate skin around your peepers. You’ll thank yourself for it.
It hit the shelves in October of last year and the reviews have been very impressive. New RoC Sublime Energy Eye, £29.99 (www.boots.com) contains E-pulse technology (which has 10 patents with another 8 pending) and works by creating an electrical charge on the surface of the skin to encourage cell-to-cell communication and skin regeneration. Because this current sends messages down through the cells using bioelectricity, rather than the product itself penetrating into the deeper layers, it’s really well tolerated even in delicate areas such as the eye. It also shows results in 3 hours, which is pretty amazing.
For those of you who prefer a natural rather than scientific approach, Melvita offers Eye Contour Gel, £18 (http://uk.melvita.com) to provide an instant lift to the eye area. Formulated with a complex of caffeine, willow and phospholipids, the gel plumps out dehydrated fine lines whilst centella and ginkgo biloba help to reduce puffiness.
If you’re feeling like the damage has been done, why not invest in Eye Secrets, £29.99 (www.eyesecrets.co.uk)? Celebrities such as Christine Bleakley, Anastasia and Amanda Holden are all fans of this new beauty essential – launched in November 2010 – and makeup artists have named it their new beauty hero. The unique application allows for an instant eye lift, whilst the invisible strip provides ease of application and a perfect platform for makeup to go on top.
LASH-BOOSTERS
Long, voluminous lashes are something we all aspire to. They can frame your eyes, add glamour and even make your face softer and more feminine. And there’s more than one way to achieve them at home, too. Boost your existing lashes, go for a volumising mascara, or opt for a pair of falsies. Try these ideas for size...
RapidLash Enhancing Serum, £39.99 (www.boots.com) is an innovative product clinically proven to make lashes up to 50% longer and 75% fuller looking in as little as 8 weeks. How? The serum delivers essential proteins, vitamins, moisturising and rejuvenating ingredients that help replenish and strengthen the structure of lashes, while adding shine and elasticity. The reviews are incredibly impressive, as are the results – and it works on brows too. This product comes with The-Beauty-Pages.com seal of approval, as it impressively boosted our Founding Editor’s lashes…
If you’re thinking about boosting your lashes with some falsies, Girls With Attitude has an excellent selection. Choose from the high-impact ‘Glamour’ or ‘Couture’ ranges, or opt for ‘Shorties’ or ‘Natural’ to give a little impact to your own lashes, lift the eye area, and give a really wearable, everyday effect. False Eyelashes and Individual Lashes are all great value at £5 (www.girlswithattitude.co.uk).
Mally is a world famous makeup artist, renowned within the beauty industry for her dynamic talent and achievements. Her A-list celebrity clients include Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, Rhianna, Celine Dion and many more, she has featured on the Oprah Winfrey shows and is a well known celebrity in her own right. Her range includes Mally Volumizing Mascara, £16.50 (www.qvcuk.com) that builds volume beautifully for a real false-lash effect. A new makeup bag essential.
BROW-SHAPERS
A well-groomed eyebrows have the potential to open up your eyes and make you look younger. So don’t neglect this part of your face when you’re doing your makeup. Instead, invest in one of the latest tools for achieving ‘A-list’ brows every time.
New CID Cosmetics is the only range in the world led by a creative team made up of hundreds of working makeup artists - and is loved by both the press and celebrities. Their two-piece i-Groom & i-Fix Eyebrow Collection, £22.75 (www.qvcuk.com) combines a neutral pencil colour with a transparent fixing product. It’s a great way to control unruly brows and the colour suits all skin types. A hardworking duo.
Or try blinc Eyebrow Mousse, £13 (www.feelunique.com). It comes in an impressive six shades, and once applied, fills in sparse areas to create the perfect brow line that cannot fade, run, or smudge – even if you sweat or wear it in harsh weather conditions. The mousse also contains a peptide to moisturise and provide anti-ageing treatment to the skin beneath your brow. So you get perfectly coloured brows, and a treat for your delicate eye-area skin into the bargain.
Clinique’s new Instant Lift for Brows, £12.50 (www.clinique.co.uk) combines an eyebrow pencil with a highlighter. The pencil is automatic, so there’s no need for sharpening, and the highlighter at the other end lifts the brow using ‘light scattering optics’ to create a brighter, more wide-eyed appearance. It comes in three shades and like all Clinique eye products, it’s ophthalmologist tested.
LID-LINERS
A cat-like flick of eyeliner across lids was a key trend in 2010 and doesn’t look like it’s going out of style for 2011 either. Great news for those who like a glamorous look...
Illamasqua’s Precision Ink, £16.50 (www.illamasqua.com) has a super-fine tip that allows for the precise application of the dense, long lasting colour. The waterproof formula dries in seconds and stays true for hours – and you can choose from deepest black, Abyss, and antique gold, Alchemy. A steady hand will come in handy... But if you haven’t got one, or you just need more practice, why not try Bourjois Liner Feutre, £5.99 (www.boots.com), a soft felt-tip eyeliner for ultra easy application? It goes on smoothly with hardly any room for mistakes – and you don’t need to be an expert to create a show-stopping flick that will last all day.
Eyeliner doesn’t have to be black. Why not experiment with some colour using 2true Eyeliner Dazzlers, £1.99 (www.superdrug.com). These long-lasting glittery liquid liners are available in an amazing 10 shades: gold, silver, mint green, purple, iridescent, bronze, forest green, turquoise, electric blue and black. They’re perfect for adding this season’s colourful look to your makeup – and each lush liner comes complete with an easy-application brush for precision lines.

A dab of highlighter on your brow bones will brighten your eyes, make you appear more awake, and lift your whole complexion. It’s a great trick to make you look like you’ve had more sleep than you really did – or perk up your complexion when you’re under the weather.
BECCA’s Bird of Paradise Gloss, £22 (www.cultbeauty.co.uk) is a moisturising, cream highlighter with a subtle iridescence that adds a dewy, peach-gold sheen and layers well on other products. It creates an instant glow that adds radiance to eyes – as well as cheeks or even lips. A real multi-tasker for your makeup bag…
Chantecaille’s Les Petales Lumiere de Rose Face Highlighter, £28 (www.spacenk.co.uk) uses a blend of pearl and pigment - and gives just the right amount of sheen to lift and accentuate your brow bones. Enriched with moisturising triglycerides, its creamy formula is gentle enough to be used on lids as well as cheeks.
Benefit’s Moon Beam, £17.50 (www.benefitcosmetics.co.uk) is a warmer alternative to the pinky-toned High Beam – a golden apricot liquid that illuminates cheek and brow bones and adds a warm shimmer to your complexion. Perfect as a primer on lids, it looks radiant on all skin tones and can be used as a highlighter or delicately blended all over the skin.
Spa Review: CHEWTON GLEN HOTEL & SPA, HAMPSHIRE (11.02.11)
Location: Chewton Glen Hotel and Spa, New Milton, Hampshire, BH25 6QS. O1425 275 341. www.chewtonglen.com
Facilities: A friend of mine, whose name is synonymous with first class travel, told me that you’ve never had a true spa experience until you’ve visited Chewton Glen. And, after banishing the January blues in only a one-night stay, I can understand why. Just a two-hour train journey from London Waterloo, Chewton Glen is known as the grande dame of British five-star country house hotels. It has all the grandeur you would expect of a Relais & Chateaux destination, with the scent of open fires filling the hallways and spacious drawing rooms elegantly laid out for afternoon tea. The huge pool flanked by pillars and clever artwork gives the spa a classical air, with the majesty of a Roman-baths. The hydrotherapy suite leading to an outdoor whirlpool adds to the feeling of space and relaxation. There are ten treatment rooms and both skincare ranges – ila and Linda Meredith - are exclusive to Chewton Glen. There is also a grooming parlour where your other half can enjoy a wet shave, while you indulge in a luxury Jessana manicure or pedicure. In fact there is plenty to amuse, both inside and out. You can take one of the complimentary bicycles to tour the grounds and visit the nearby beach, which is only a twenty-minute walk away, enjoy a round of golf on the nine-hole course, or even partake in a terribly English game of croquet. I had a game of tennis on one of the hotel’s two indoor courts. My friendly coach, Ray, put my somewhat rusty technique through its paces, and put my backhand, forehand, volleying and serving to the test. After an hour I felt in need of another massage, but my game was in better shape than it has been for years. Feeling peckish by the pool, there is complimentary fruit and flavoured water. You can also enjoy a buffet lunch in the spa café. For £20 you can eat as much as you like - and depending on how hard you’ve hit the gym, as healthily or indulgently as you dare. Although we could not find fault with the food that evening, by February 2011 the restaurant will have undergone substantial refurbishment allowing more relaxed dining as well as a more formal affair.
Ambience: It’s an imposing five-star hotel with a very down-to-earth welcome. The spa, like the staff, is incredibly relaxed and friendly, and has a strong focus on catering to your needs, rather than following the latest fads, so you instantly feel you are in safe hands. A restoring retreat to cocoon all year round.
Treatments reviewed: Kundalini treatment: £87 for 60 mins
This treatment is all about soothing, relaxing and balancing the nervous system through a special blend of essential oils and ancient techniques of massage and chakra healing. Following a brief health consultation, I lay down on a fluffy toweled bed, surrounded by candles, soothing lighting and music, my feet were exfoliated which was a pleasant if ticklish start. I had been feeling stressed following a busy Christmas, so this treatment was perfect for clearing my mind and leaving me in a state of equilibrium. My back was massaged using the essential oils. It was quite light as it is all about balancing the body rather than tackling any deep knots. Hot poultices filled with Himalayan healing salts which were then laid along the length of my spine with one placed in each hand and on the soles of my feet. To finish, I was given a refreshing cold fruit tea and retired to the spacious relaxation lounge in an almost trance-like state.
Haute Couture Facial: £92 for 60 mins
This is a results-driven facial designed designed to tackle particular skin concerns. I found it great for rejuvenating a dull, tired complexion but could be a little harsh for sensitive skins. The therapist began by briefly asking if I had any specific problems before giving me a gentle back massage. My face was then cleansed twice - first with a gel and then a milk cleanser - and steamed very briefly followed by a quick extraction. Then a unique micro glycolic serum was applied to dissolve dead skin cells. A soothing serum was then massaged thoroughly into my skin, with particular attention paid to massaging around my eyes, then a mask was applied while I had a gentle shoulder and head massage. It was all very relaxing. A nourishing was then applied followed by another fruit tea and it was back to the spa to put my feet up after all my hard work. Phew.
Blog: LOUISE SUMS UP HER EXPERIENCE WITH THE AVEDA SMOOTH INFUSION RANGE (04.02.11)
Sponsored Post
So… I’ve been using the Aveda Smooth Infusion range for three weeks now (click here to read the first blog by Krista Madden and scroll down to read last week’s blog by me) and I have noticed the following things:
- The Shampoo, Conditioner and Style-Prep Smoother made a difference to frizz from the very first use – even after an afternoon in high humidity.
- Prolonged use (over the following weeks) made an even bigger difference, making hair silkier, shinier, and more manageable.
- The scent is amazing and clings to hair all day.
- The products weren’t too rich or heavy – even on my fine hair.
- There were fewer tangles after washing – especially after smoothing through the Style-Prep Smoother through hair.
- Hair felt softer and better hydrated.
- The packaging is incredibly stylish.
To further summarise the range, I have answered a few questions below…
What can you expect? Overall, I would describe the result as ‘a professional blow-dry at home’. And I’ve put it through a vigorous trial… Over the past three weeks, I have been in high humidity in Dubai, been to the gym twice a week, headed on the tube in central London, and been caught in several rain showers – but the products impressed me time and time again.
Does the range completely eradicate frizz? No – it doesn’t work miracles, but it makes a very, very noticeable difference. Fewer flyaways, noticeable shine, and control of static. I’m seriously impressed.
Would I buy the Aveda Smooth Infusion range? Yes, I definitely would – and I’ve tried countless haircare ranges and not felt that way, so I’m not an easy customer.
How much do the products cost? The Shampoo is £14.50 for 250ml (or £40.50 for 1 litre), the Conditioner is £16.50 for 200ml (or £58 for 1 litre) and the Style-Prep Smoother is £18 for 100ml.
Where can I buy it?

TRIED & TESTED: NATURAL SHOWER GELS (04.02.11)
Ditch the sodium laurel sulphate and switch to a natural shower gel. We’ve put six to the test…
SHIFFA BASIL, MINT AND BLACK PEPPER BODY WASH, £21.25 for 200ml (www.shiffa.com)
What they say: Made from the most precious combinations of ingredients to create a unique product line that delivers exceptional results. Shiffa Basil, Mint and Black Pepper Body Wash is refreshing and invigorating with soothing aloe vera to repair and protect, toning rosemary to ease muscles, fresh peppermint to revive and stimulate, spicy black pepper oil to stimulate and energise and sweet basil to clear the mind.
The Results: I’m not a morning person - I love my bed and my snooze button is well worn. I’d never heard of Shiffa before, but certainly liked the idea that it hails from Dubai - if anything could add some sunshine to my morning, surely this would be the product for the job! I loved the luxury packaging and the bottle itself looks super sleek, although I wished it had a pump dispenser as I found myself pouring out more than required. It’s quite a thick jelly formula, which doesn’t lather – something I’ve come to expect from natural products. By far the best thing about this product, however, is the invigorating scent. It’s incredible! I’d say mint is the predominant fragrance, although it’s a grown-up scent, combined with the basil and black pepper. It certainly made my alarm a little more bearable.
Best for: Early mornings
OCCO MARKOCIJA No.5 WILD MEADOW BATH & BODY WASH, £18 for 250ml (www.occo-online.com)
What they say: Soothing chamomile, jasmine and natural oat-based cleansers help to soften, regenerate and care for your skin. Natural essential oils of lavender and cedarwood will comfort your mood.
The Results: I work long hours and I’m always on the lookout for new products to help me wind down from the stress of the day when I arrive home. This product didn’t disappoint. The packaging is as sleek in reality as it looks in images, with a well-designed logo and slimline bottle. Although the gel contains lavender, it’s not an old-fashioned scent - it’s blended with chamomile and jasmine, so the scent is subtle. I found the fragrance quite warming, helping to soothe away my aches - and it seemed to gently condition my skin too. I thoroughly enjoyed testing this and felt wonderfully relaxed after my shower. It is pricey, but I liked that this can be used as a bath gel as well for those occasions when I do have a little more time to indulge in a soak.
Best for: Relaxation
WELEDA POMEGRANATE CREAMY BODY WASH, £8.95 for 200ml (www.weleda.co.uk)
What they say: Protect the skin from free radicals, stimulate skin regeneration and improve firmness and skin elasticity...in the shower. Rich in anti-oxidants from the certified organic pomegranate seed oil, this SLS free, creamy body wash helps slow the signs of aging and is wonderful to use- at home, in the gym or on your travels.
The Results: This product is presented in a bright tomato red tube, which is convenient to use and stands out on the bathroom shelf. I quickly fell in love with the creamy formula, although I found that I still needed to moisturise after my shower. It was easy to work into a rich lather and I could use it in place of shaving foam for a speedy leg shave. The scent takes some getting used to - I had expected something fruity, but it’s quite a sharp scent with warm, spicy undertones. It doesn’t linger on skin afterwards. I did find that the condition of my skin improved and although it’s hard to say whether this is down to the creamy formula or the fact that it’s natural, I’d definitely recommend this for winter use.
Best for: Skin caring benefits
ANATOMICALS “I’VE HAD THE THYME OF MY LIFE” CYPRESS AND THYME BODY CLEANSER, £4 for 300ml (www.anatomicals.net)
What they say: We want you to strip... and by strip we don’t mean down to your birthday suit, that would be just plain rude! We want you to strip your bathroom of the bad stuff and indulge in a fabulous, natural beauty treat or two from the new Anatomicals Natural Collection. No one will want to put this Baby in the bathroom corner! Infused with calming cypress and relaxing thyme, this fabulous body buddy will soothe the skin and senses after a stressful day.
The Results: As soon as I saw the packaging, it brought a smile to my face. I adored the quirky name, handy pump applicator, and cute Dirty Dancing inspired cartoon. I really liked the fresh scent, which lingers delicately on skin - the best way to describe it is as smelling “clean”! I’ve been trying to make use of my gym membership since Christmas and this is the perfect product for post-workout. The idea that it contains herbs appealed to me - although, I’m not sure I’d attribute them to soothing my muscles, as I usually find that the hot water alone helps. As I shower a couple of times a day at the moment, I seem to be going through products at a rate of knots. Due to the opaque green bottle, it’s difficult to tell how much is remaining but I like knowing that it’s not going to cost me a fortune to replace when I run out, something I definitely intend to do!
Best for: Value for money
ORGANIC BLUE WAKE UP SHOWER GEL, £3.99 for 250ml (www.HealthQuestStore.com)
What they say: Formulated with a herbal infusion of anti-bacterial Neem (renowned for its ability to help with skin disorders), this gorgeous shower buddy contains the uplifting and mood enhancing aroma of organic mandarin and ginger with subtle notes of vanilla. Packed with organic herbal extracts of Angelica (renowned for soothing the skin and promoting a healthy blood flow), Elder, Red Clover and Passionflower this hard working gel will give skin the silky, smooth, fragranced treatment.
The Results: I’ve vowed to be greener in my approach to beauty this year and I guess shower products, which I use on a daily basis are a good place to start! The blue tinted plastic bottle of this bottle isn’t particularly inspiring - it looks like a classic “eco” product, but the product certainly doesn’t disappoint. Despite being 100% organic, they managed to successfully recreate the formula of a traditional shower gel - something I was delighted to discover, as natural brands I’ve tried in the past tend to be quite fluid. It has a strong citrus scent when used, which I found uplifting - but sadly it doesn’t stay on the skin after showering. I’m impressed – and I can’t wait to discover further products from the range.
Best for: The organic option
AROMATHERAPY ASSOCIATES REVIVE BODY WASH, £21.50 for 200ml (www.aromatherapyassociates.com)
What they say: Awaken body and mind with the invigorating citrus fragrance and energising properties of Revive Body Wash. A wonderful energy-boosting blend, this body wash is bursting with marine extracts that leave the skin soft and conditioned, whilst ingredients of neroli and bergamot leave skin subtly scented with a delicate fragrance.
The Results: I’ve never spent this much on a shower gel before - but once I’d had the pleasure of trying this product, I realised it was well worth the investment. The packaging is sleek, but I wouldn’t say it screams luxury. I liked that it has a pump to dispense the product and I absolutely fell in love with the scent - it’s a wonderfully unique aromatherapy blend, which justifies the price. I can honestly say I’ve never smelt anything else quite like it - and it’s uplifting and energising for morning use, even lending a helping hand when hungover! Aromatherapy Associates is quickly becoming one of my favourite brands, just don’t tell my other half…
Best for: The luxury choice
Spa Review: FILTHY GORGEOUS, DEBENHAMS OXFORD STREET, LONDON (04.02.11)
Location: Debenhams, Oxford Street, London. 0207 5187753. www.filthygorgeouslondon.com
Facilities: Filthy Gorgeous London is set it the heart of London’s West End, within Debenhams on Oxford Street. The day spa provides a one-stop-shop for those seeking nail, hair, makeup, or eyelash services, with an impressive range of beauty treatments available under one roof. The destination boasts more than just a convenient location – with highly trained therapists and stylists, and a bright, quirky interior that makes a visit a must on every beauty junkie’s ‘must visit’ list.
Ambience: I visited the spa on a snowy weekday before Christmas and the store was packed with shoppers. The treatment area of the day-spa is gorgeous - it feels like a stylish, sexy boudoir. It’s worth noting that treatments aren’t conducted in private rooms - at times I had a couple of people stood over me watching various treatments, which was a little disconcerting – so it’s not the place for wall flowers. That said, I would be back to Filthy Gorgeous in a second… It’s the perfect place to head for a girly morning with friends or to prepare for a glamorous event.
Treatment Reviewed: Rock Star Package, £75 for an hour (includes foot and hand nailover, brow shape, airbrush foundation, fake lashes, hair straightening and a temporary tattoo.)
As soon as I sat down I was introduced to three different therapists who would be looking after me for the following hour. The treatment began with an eyebrow wax – eyebrows are tackled first so the inevitable redness can cool down before the airbrush foundation is applied. This mist of makeup is evenly sprayed over your entire face and gives a flawless finish – unfortunately I’m now addicted! After my makeup came a foot and nailover – this involved shaping and painting nails, but can be upgraded to a full manicure for extra cost.. Fake eyelashes and hair straightening followed to complete my treatment. I opted out of having the temporary tattoo, but this is also on offer to give you real Rock Star status. I left feeling glamorous and ready to rock and roll!
Editor’s Letter (04.02.11)
I’m writing this as I’m sat in an airport coffee shop, with a sense of doom rising in the pit of my stomach. No, I’m not a nervous flyer – I have in fact just realised that I have left behind one of my travel essentials. And it’s going to sound very, very spoilt... I have forgotten to pack my 100% pure silk pillowcase – and the thought of laying my cheeks against a scratchy cotton pillowcase (because believe me, it does feel scratchy when you’ve been sleeping on silk for the last couple of years) is filling me with dread. How things have changed… Before the days of beauty journalism, my travel essentials were flight socks, earplugs, and a good book. These days, I can’t get through a trip without my beloved pillowcase, cashmere socks, Elemis travel pack, and set of mini Jo Malone candles. How about you? What can’t you get through a trip away without? Email me at editor@the-beauty-pages.com and let me know…
Topshop. I painted my nails with Topshop’s Gypsy Night Nail Polish (£5) last week – and I’m a big fan. It has a black base, packed with multi-coloured glitter particles. Staring at my nails was like staring into the galaxy and it was almost mesmerising. I’d never usually go for black on my nails – it’s a bit too ‘goth’ for me – but the glitter makes it much softer and more stylish. It lasted impressively well, staying chip-free for over a week. www.topshop.com
GiellyGreen. I’ve fallen head over heels for GiellyGreen’s Moroccan Argan Oil (£19.50), which is applied to wet hair after shampooing as a leave-in treatment. Just a couple of drops – brushed evenly through locks – is enough to add shine, detangle, soften, and control frizz. It’s a miracle in a bottle! The oil is non-greasy - so no need to worry if you have fine hair. It might seem pricey – but my bottle hardly looks touched after several uses. It’s going to last and last… I really recommend it. http://shop.giellygreen.com
Rimmel. I must admit that I was slightly dubious when I heard about Rimmel’s Lasting Finish Foundation (£6.99), which promises 25 hours of transfer resistant coverage. Nothing stays on my skin that long… However, I can genuinely say that I’m impressed. It really does last – the coverage was still full and noticeable when I came to remove it that evening (and the cotton wool bud was testament to that). But it’s not a heavy formula, which suffocates the skin – no, it’s light, incredibly natural-looking, and non-greasy. Try it. www.boots.com
NARS. I like the sound of these Velvet Gloss Lip Pencils (£17.50 each) by NARS. I’m a bit of stationary addict – and the fact that they are so reminiscent of chunky crayons is a real draw. The lightweight, non-sticky formula enriched with Vitamin E sounds divine – and the colours (New Lover, Happy Dats, Hopi, Frivolous, Baroque, and Club Mix) are flattering, on-trend, and very wearable. I’ve heard that the A-Listers are going mad for them – and if it’s good enough for them… www.narscosmetics.co.uk
Not on the High Street. If you are thinking ahead to Valentines Day, why not treat your other half to this bespoke card (£8) from Not on the High Street? You can pick the location of the heart-shaped map when you order – making it extra special. What would you choose? The place where you first met? The place where you got engaged or married? The place you bought your first house? Have fun deciding… It’ll look fabulous in a frame after the day has passed. Click here to order
Feature: EASTERN PROMISE (04.02.11)
It’s time to look to the East… Asian products have a focus on hard-working ingredients that get the results you need for your hair and skin. Try these brands for size...
SHISEIDO
You’ve probably heard of Shiseido, and no wonder – the brand has been around for well over a century. It was born in 1872 in Tokyo's Ginza district as Japan's first Western-style pharmacy. The company name expresses an “Oriental style, Western learning” way of thinking which includes the determination to create a new culture, building up a new business based on Western medicine, and a name inspired by eastern philosophy.
It wasn’t until the 1960’s that the brand began to export to Europe and emerged onto the global stage with its Zen perfume at a time when Oriental designs were becoming very fashionable. In 1965, the year after Zen's introduction, Shiseido established a corporation in the United States. It hasn’t looked back.
Today Shiseido has the unique expertise that comes with over a hundred years of cosmetic experience, and are always at the leading edge. The result is a brand you can always rely on for fabulous textures, delicious fragrances and above all – results. And even the packaging is gorgeous...
Try the Bio Performance Super Corrective Serum, £84 (www.houseoffraser.co.uk), which promises visible improvements to skin from its very first application. Containing Shiseido’s new patent-pending ingredient, Bio-Regnesist, it delivers anti-ageing benefits that intensify over time and daily use, promote radiance and reduce lines. It also helps skin become less vulnerable to environmental aggressors.
RMK
You might not have heard of it, but RMK is the number one selling cosmetics brand in Japan. A relatively new kid on the block, it was launched in 1997 by former makeup artist for Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, Rumiko. Created to reflect the inner beauty of all women, RMK is filled with breakthrough formulations, easy to use textures and genuine beauty innovations.
Throughout RMK's creation and now, during its ongoing development, Rumiko work tirelessly to ensure that every product is simple-to-use. 'Most people aren't makeup artists,' she acknowledges, 'so make-up has to be effortless for everyone.'
Both the cosmetics and the skincare ranges have clean, simple packaging and gorgeous textures. The cleansing milks and oils have a lot of fans in the UK, as do the glide-on make-up formulations like the Creamy Polished Base and the Make Up Base, which has been the number one selling primer in Japan for the last 13 years.
Try the Recovery Gel, £38 (www.beautybay.com) - an effective, overnight treatment gel that restores damaged skin to its self-regulating state. Designed to retain all the moisture and goodness within your skin for hours, it will repeatedly deliver it to the skin as needed on self-detecting skin’s hydration levels. The polymer gel formula acts as a mask to create a sealing effect overnight – so you’ll wake up to gorgeously soft skin.
YU-BE
Yu-Be was created in 1957 when a young pharmacist named Yoshikiyo Nowatari first introduced his now famous moisturising cream to Japan. His creation was invented at the request of a lady who had long-suffered from dry, cracked skin. She was tired of using petroleum-based skin care products that she found to be greasy, messy and ineffective, so with the help of a chemist and a special manufacturing process, Yoshikiyo made a glycerin-based moisturizer that would go on to be one of the longest-selling skin care products in Japan.
For years, Yu-Be was an often-asked-for special gift from travellers visiting Japan. One Japanese-American businessman was constantly bringing back Yu-Be to his wife, Elena. Jim, an entrepreneur and businessman, saw an opportunity and decided to bring his wife’s beloved product to the United States, and then Europe and Australia. The response has proven Elena’s instinct that women and families all over the world would embrace the Japanese whole body, whole family approach to skincare.
Try the Yu-Be Moisturising Skin Cream, from £9.95 (www.beautybay.com), a concentrated glycerin moisturising cream that smoothes, moisturises and helps hydrate severe dry skin. It can heal split cuticles and smooth rough, dry skin on hands, elbows, knees and feet, as well as protect and moisturise skin exposed to cold, wind, water and sun. The non-greasy formula absorbs quickly and locks in moisture for hours, and it contains no artificial colours or fragrances.
SHU UEMURA
Shu Uemura was one of the first Asian makeup artists to gain fame in the West. Born in 1928, his childhood dream of becoming an actor was crushed in his late teens by an illness, so he searched for a vocation that would be less physically demanding, but still creative. Always fascinated by concepts of beauty, the young Shu Uemura resolved to become a makeup artist, and enrolled at the Tokyo beauty academy: the only man in a class of 130.
After finding fame in Hollywood, he returned permanently to Japan in 1965 and established the Shu Uemura makeup institute, the first Hollywood style makeup studio in Japan.
The rest is history, and the brand has gone from strength to strength – consistently at the cutting edge of the cosmetics business and constantly innovating in the fields of makeup research and skincare formulas, as well as package and retail design.
The range is famous for its award winning cleansing oils and high-performance makeup products. Also worth trying is the ‘Art Of Hair’ range, such as the Silk Oil Camellia Smoothing Fluid, £14.95 (www.activebeauty.co.uk). This lightweight serum helps define styles and provides silky frizz-control for a smooth, flawless effect. Shine and separation are created – perfect for curls – and the oil also provides humidity resistance and heat-styling protection for glossy, healthy locks.
GINVERA
Ginvera originated in Singapore and specialises in skincare products that harness the natural properties and powerful antioxidants of Green Tea. Green Tea is renowned for its ability to neutralise free radicals, shield skin from environmental pollution – and protect against the ageing process.
Ginvera Marvel Gel, £15 (www.cultbeauty.co.uk) is becoming a cult product for dealing with blackheads. It literally dissolves them away and is especially good for men who seem to find it hard to keep nose blackheads at bay. It’s a mild, exfoliating gel-mask helps break up and remove the top layer of dead epidermis cells, makeup residue and ingrained impurities. Enriched with green tea extract, its antioxidant effect tackles free radicals and simulates the skin's metabolism making it brighter. In just thirty rubs, your nose will be blackhead free.
Or try Ginvera Green Tea Complete Cleanser, £12.90 (www.cultbeauty.co.uk), a creamy cleanser that contains the same combination of Green Tea, Ginseng and Aloe Vera as the legendary Marvel Gel. Use it to gently remove makeup, excess oil and dirt while contracting pores and refreshing the skin without drying it out. The anti-oxidant properties of the natural extracts will balance free radicals, meaning this cleanser has fantastic nourishing and anti-ageing properties too. It's gentle enough to use on sensitive, blemish-prone skin and is enriched with Green Tea and other antioxidant ingredients to add anti-ageing to its impressive list of benefits.
COMO SHAMBALA
The COMO Shambhala range hails from Indonesia and was originally formulated for use in the world famous COMO Hotel and Resort Spas. But the COMO Shambhala products became so popular with the jetset who used them, that the brand was forced to retail its products. Good news for those of us who aren’t in the jetset!
The brand is a favourite of hair guru Charles Worthington and includes massage oils, bodycare, haircare, home and travel products that are aligned to the COMO Shambhala holistic and healthy living philosophy.
Based on the principals of aromatherapy, only high-grade pure essential oils are used in the products – and they are all free from parabens, sodium laurel sulphate, petrochemicals, synthetic substances and artificial colour or fragrance.
Try the Invigorate Shower Gel, £20 (www.cultbeauty.co.uk). With an aromatherapeutic mix of eucalyptus, peppermint, lavender and geranium, it clears your airways and cleanses your skin without drying it out. It’s popular the world over with the lucky people who have had the chance to visit COMO Shambhala spa resort in Bali; and for those who haven't, a little whiff of this will transport you there for the duration of your shower! There is no better way to wake up in the morning.
