Breaking News: NIVEA LAUNCH PURE & NATURAL SKINCARE RANGE (28.01.11)
Sponsored Post
Fans of natural skincare are in luck – as NIVEA, one of the most trusted names in skincare, has just launched the Pure & Natural range, which combines advanced skincare expertise with effective natural ingredients that work in perfect harmony with the skin.
With 95% of the ingredients of natural origin, the range comprises of: Facial Moisturising Day Cream £5.10 (available in Normal to Combination and Dry to Sensitive); Facial Cleanser and Toner £3.36 each, Facial Anti-Wrinkle Day and Night Care £8.49, Body Lotion £3.57, Body Moisturiser £3.57, Hand Cream £3.05 and Lip Balm £1.99.
The lead ingredient contained in NIVEA Pure & Natural products is 100% organic Argan Oil, which contains three times as much Vitamin E as Olive Oil and is a natural antioxidant. Rich in essential, precious fatty acids, it provides effective and natural protection against free radicals, whilst proven to create a skin smoothing effect.
We’ve been testing the NIVEA Pure & Natural range for the past month at The-Beauty-Pages.com – and here’s what our Founding Editor, Louise Emma Clarke, has to say:
“I’m a big, big fan of this range! My skin is quite sensitive and I prefer to use natural products, so NIVEA Pure & Natural is the kind of range I would pick off the shelf. I loved the creamy, indulgent textures – not what I’d necessarily expect from a ‘natural’ range, but very, very welcome.
The products have natural, neutral fragrances – bar the Lip Balm, which has the sweet, irresistible scent of milk and honey, which I adored.
I can honestly say that I enjoyed using all the products, including the Cleanser, which worried me initially as it felt richer than my blemish-prone skin was used to. One month later and my skin feel smooth and appears clear, which is exactly the results I was hoping for.
A special mention should go to the Hand Cream, which is probably the best I have tried under the £10 mark – I am truly stunned that it is only £3.05! It leaves my hands feeling hydrated, soft, but not at all greasy. The tube is sat on my desk, but I only need to use it once every morning.
I highly recommend the Nivea range – it does exactly what it promises on the packaging, but includes gentle, natural ingredients. The price point is amazing.”

Feature: PEARLY WHITES (28.01.11)
Want to brighten your smile? We’ve looked at six different whitening options – and asked a panel of testers to share the results…
CLINIQUE'S BRIGHTER SMILE LIPSTICK, £15 (www.clinique.co.uk)
What it is: Clinique’s Lipstick Collection for a Brighter Smile promises to make teeth appear whiter and brighter. There simply couldn’t be a quicker or easier way to brighten your teeth – but how does it work? On application, the colours create a contrast that brightens your smile. Using a dental colour guide during clinical testing, Clinique confirmed it: each smile was at least one shade brighter.
Who it suits: The lipsticks are available in four shades and packaged in luxurious silver casing - you’d never know it had anything to do with teeth whitening. This is the perfect option if you don’t want to mess around with your teeth – it just creates the illusion of a lighter shade.
Expert Opinion: “After examining panelists in Clinique’s clinical testing labs, I noticed that teeth appeared at least one shade whiter after the application of these specific shades. The results were truly outstanding. The subtle blue tones and contrast in each colour instantly brightened the appearance of teeth.” - Dr. Paul Siu, New York City Dentist
What our tester said: “I love Clinique but had a hard time believing a lipstick could change the colour of my teeth. The packaging is gorgeous and I love the fact they are such flattering shades. The colours I tested were all very rich, but I definitely noticed that my smile looked brighter – in fact it made my whole face look younger and more awake. Convinced it was all in my mind, I tried the lipstick again when I was with a friend – and she noticed the same results! I’d recommend these – they’re a great quick fix.” Lois, 29
LA WHITE PORTABLE WHITENING PEN, £16.95 (www.lawhite.co.uk)
What it is: The LAwhite pen works by removing stains on your teeth with a specially formulated CE approved gel and built-in brush. To use, simply twist the top of the pen to release the gel and brush it onto teeth. You can target individual teeth – or use it on your whole smile. The LAwhite pen is easy to use and full instructions are supplied with each order.
Who it suits: If you want to whiten teeth quickly, but don’t have huge amounts to spend on it, this is the treatment for you. It’s the size of a pen, so easy to transport. It’s also ideal if you’ve been using a home whitening treatment, but are heading away on holiday and want to continue the treatment.
Expert Opinion: “You should notice results after one week of one application per day. However if you have bad stains, you may need to use it twice per day for one week to see results and for your teeth to become whiter,” spokesperson for LA White.
What our tester said: “I have quite stained teeth from smoking too much as a teenager and have had my teeth professionally whitened a couple of times. I can’t afford to keep getting them done so was more than happy to try another option. Although this pen works quite well, I had to use it twice a day for over 10 days before I saw any results. I think if you’ve already got fairly white teeth and you just want a little extra sparkle then this would be ideal. I love the fact it’s bank-balance friendly!” Jess, 33
BOOTS EXPERT TEETH WHITENING TREATMENT, £28.59 (www.boots.com)
What it is: This home whitening treatment is quick, easy to use, and clinically proven. It works to remove stains and lighten teeth by several shades, without using peroxide.
Who it suits: This slightly more pricey treatment will give you a bright smile but without using the chemicals that professional home treatments do – perfect if you’re slightly nervous about using bleach on your teeth.
Expert Opinion: This kit contains no bleach, so it can be used safely at home without professional guidance - but be careful if you are shopping around. Dr Tim Bradstock-Smith of The London Smile Clinic warns: “Always be careful with home whitening treatments. When choosing, check to ensure it's safe and accredited.”
What our tester said: “I am mid thirties and have yellowing teeth. In my opinion the trays are pretty easy to use and the kit comes with clear instructions – perfect for a novice. The accelerator cap is annoying though as my bottom teeth are not in a straight row and the applicator makes it nearly impossible to reach two of them. The gel is a lot lumpier than I expected - but after just three days I noticed a slight difference – it’s didn’t work miracles but has definitely given me more confidence.” Laura, 36
BLANX TEETH WHITENING TOOTHPASTE, £6.99 (Boots Nationwide)
What it is: BlanX Classic is the first whitening toothpaste to be based on ingredients derived from natural Arctic Lichen. It’s a non-abrasive formula, which cleans deeply and gently without damaging enamel, whilst killing bacteria and plaque, and protecting the teeth.
Who it suits: Perfect for first time users – it easily fits into your daily routine and is only a little more expensive than well known super market brands.
Expert Opinion: “The active ingredient of Arctic Lichen combats the bacteria responsible for causing cavities. It removes bacteria that sticks to enamel and penetrates deeply into teeth to remove bacterial residues and stains caused by food and drink. Arctic Lichen also stops plaque from forming,” says a BlanX spokesperson.
What our tester said: “I’ve tried a couple of teeth whitening toothpastes before and not been that impressed - so I was initially unhappy about the price of this product, because I expected it to be wasted money. However, I was pleasantly surprised with BlanX – I used it twice a day and within a week, I started to very subtle brightening effect. I like the fact that the ingredients aren’t as harsh as some whitening treatments. It’s definitely a quick and easy treatment – plus it’s good on the bank balance! “ Henny, 28
PROFESSIONAL HOME WHITENING AT THE LONDON SMILE CLINIC, £425 (LONDONSMILE.CO.UK or 0207 255 2559)
What it is: This home whitening kit includes custom-made trays for accuracy and comfort of application. Gel is placed in the trays and seated over the teeth for up to an hour a day. Excellent results are usually achieved in 10 to 14 days. The London Smile Clinic supply plenty of whitening gel to complete treatment and to maintain the results for months to come – and further gel can be supplied as required.
Who it suits: If you’re wary of having a gleaming, Hollywood-white smile, then this is the perfect option for you. The treatment is not as invasive as laser treatment - and you control the speed and intensity of the whitening at home.
Expert Opinion: “All tooth whitening fades and coloured foods and drinks will speed this process. Its particularly important to stick to a white and clear diet on the first day or two after using the home whitening treatment,” says Dr Tim Bradstock-Smith of The London Smile Clinic.
What our tester said: “I’d recommend this to anyone – it was fantastic. I went for a half hour consultation with the dentist, who fitted a mould of my teeth to make it totally unique to me. Then I used it for an hour a day before bed, over the course of two weeks. On the 11th day, I started noticing a big difference – it’s definitely important to use it regularly to really see the best results. Okay so it’s expensive, but I’ve never had so many people ask me why I look so well. They don’t realise at first that it’s my teeth – but it obviously changes the way my whole face looks – I’ll definitely have it done again.” Sian, 45
PEARLYS LASER TEETH WHITENING, from £395 (www.pearlys.co.uk)
What it is: This whitening treatment combines the speed of in-spa ‘laser’ treatment (which lightens the teeth by an average of 8-12 shades) and the long-term maintenance of a customised tray homekit (fabricated from impressions of your teeth). The combination of treatments promises to give you the white, bright teeth you’ve always dreamt of – on a long-term basis.
Who it suits: Those that want instant results, plus the control to maintain the results at home. It’s an expensive treatment – but you can’t beat the whitening power of an in-salon laser treatment. It’s perfect for those willing to invest a little money, for example before a wedding.
Celebrity Endorsement: Alexandra Burke, winner of X-Factor 2009, raves: “I’ve just had my teeth whitened; it’s absolutely fantastic, my teeth look so white. Thank you all at Pearlys for being so friendly, professional and lovely.”
What our tester said: “I wasn’t expecting a big jump in tooth shades, as my teeth weren’t hugely discoloured to begin with, so I was elated to discover that they were now 12 shades lighter. Just over a week later, my bespoke trays and syringes of whitening gel arrived in the post – so I was able to top up the result whenever I felt the need (I will aim to brighten my teeth every couple of months). Despite some sensitivity in the days that followed, it is definitely a treatment I will be recommending to my friends.” Louise, 30
Treatment Review: MOTHER-TO-BE SPA DAY AT NORTON HOUSE HOTEL & SPA (28.01.11)
What it promises: This pre and post natal package focuses on treating muscular aches, fluid retention and fatigue - and is suitable for mums-to-be, 13 weeks and over. The day includes a scalp massage, an Elemis nurturing massage for mothers to be, an Elemis skin booster facial, a luxury manicure with mittens or classic pedicure, a two-course lunch, and the use of the spa facilities.
What happens: Because it was a spa day, I had enlisted the company of my sister who was having the ‘Rejuvenating’ package. We arrived at the spa in the morning and had a coffee in the bar/restaurant area, while our friendly spa co-ordinator came and talked to us about our day and what our packages would involve. We had time for a dip in the pool before we went off for our treatments and then met up again for lunch, which was delicious. After lunch I had another treatment, which gave my sister time to enjoy the steam room/hot tub part of the spa, which I wasn’t allowed in because of being pregnant. We reunited for a final swim and more coffees in the bar before we headed back to real life. The treatments themselves were all carried out by my thoroughly professional therapist, Emma. My package focused on treating muscular aches, fluid retention and fatigue - and kicked off with a scalp massage and then an Elemis nurturing body massage, designed especially for mothers-to-be. It was gorgeous, nice, and gentle on my bump - but vigorous enough on my aching legs. My Elemis skin booster facial was divine. And in the afternoon, my luxury manicure with mittens made me feel thoroughly pampered.
The Results: The day was wonderful and a much-needed indulgence at a time when you can feel both lacking in energy and devoid of glamour. I slept well and avoided my usual leg cramps for at least a week. My beautiful manicure also lasted for ages and gave people something to comment on other than my growing bump!
Price: £175 for the day (total treatment time 2 hours 45 minutes)

Editor’s Letter (28.01.11)
It’s been reported that sales of Dry Shampoo have shot through the roof. Why, you may ask… It’s not festival season, the weather isn’t hot and sticky, it’s not party season - so why are people clambering to get their hands on powder in a can? I’ve got a theory… In dark, gloomy January, we all want those extra few minutes in bed. People are ditching the lengthy shampoo, conditioner, and blow dry (as perfect as it may look) and heading out the door doused in dry shampoo. There’s nothing wrong with that if it saves precious minutes – but remember ladies, pick a product that matches the colour of your hair, as there is nothing worse than telltale grey streaks… Right on cue, Batiste – everybody’s favourite budget dry shampoo brand – has introduced a range of products designed to compliment your hair colour. So take your pick from Blonde, Medium and Brunette , or Dark and Deep Brown (£3.05 from Boots Nationwide)– and enjoy pressing the snooze button…
Paul & Joe. I don’t think Paul & Joe has launched a makeup range that I haven’t loved – but even so, the new Spring Wildflowers Collection 2011 has surpassed all my expectations. The products contain fabulous ingredients to nourish the skin as you apply, including Orange Flower Water (in the eye colours), Apricot Oil (in the lipsticks), and Jojoba Oil (in the Nail Enamel). But the real pull, of course, is the utterly divine packaging. The new Lipsticks (£14 each) are my personal favourites – I simply need to own all three. 0207 6299161
Orla Kiely. On the subject of beautiful packaging, I am coveting Orla Kiely’s fabulous new Home Fragrance range. Available in three irresistible scents – Fig Tree, Sage & Cassis, and Basil & Mint (my personal favourite) – the collection includes a Scented Candle (£22.75), Diffuser (£22.75), Room Spray (£19.95), Hand Wash (£14) and Scented Leaves (£14.95) to fragrance the inside of wardrobes, drawers, or even cars. I’ve always been a big fan of Orla Kiely – and this is an inspired addition to her collection. From February at select department stores nationwide.
Champneys. I love the idea of the Writers Weeekend, run at Champneys Tring from 11th March. Not only do you get the usual treats involved in a weekend at the famous health club – including unlimited use of the facilities and all meals – you be lead through a series of workshops taken by best-selling author Sophie King, who has written five novels, including ‘The School Run’. Prices start at £230 per person, which is a small price to pay for a weekend that could essentially change your life. Click here to book http://www.champneys.com/Booking/Packages/Wellbeing-Breaks/Writers-Weekend-at-Tring?date=11%2F03%2F2011
TOMMYGUNS. If you have dry or damaged hair (I’m talking to you, ghd addicts), I would highly recommend TOMMYGUNS’ Jasmine & Wild Nettle Shampoo & Conditioner (£4.99 each). The new products contain an ingredient called Abil® T Quat 60 (bear with me…); a clever new silicone with no build-up effects. It has the ability to stick to the hair shaft exactly where it is damaged, delivering hydration and protection exactly where it’s needed. In fact, it promises to aid detangling by 50% - and if your hair tangles after washing (and believe me, mine is the worst), you will know what a godsend that can be! www.tommygunshaircare.com
Jaeger. I have fallen head over heels for Jaeger London’s Limited Edition Pooch Tote (£750), created to carry around the most spoilt lapdogs. Sadly it’s way too small for my own hound, who’d probably only fit her head between the walls of the butter soft, nude leather – but those that have small enough best friends can now carry them around, whilst staying bang on trend. Tried & Tested: COOLING EYE GELS AND SERUMS (28.01.11)
Puffy, tired eyes? Grab a cooling eye cream or gel. We’ve put six to the test…
ELEMIS EYES AWAKE RECOVERY GEL, £36.80 for 10ml (www.timetospa.co.uk)
What they say: Aromatic water of Blue Cornflower is blended with cooling extract of German Chamomile and Mallow, an ancient remedy for dry, irritated skin, to help revive tired eyes. Horsetail gently tones and supports the puffy, delicate skin around the eye contour.
The Results: I tested the product for the first time after a day sat in an air conditioned office, staring at the computer – which often makes my eyes sore and tired – and the product felt instantly cooling and soothing. It absorbed quickly, so makeup can be applied to the eye area just a few seconds after application - great for saving time in the morning! The problem that I had with this product, however, was that the bottle delivered too much gel with each pump, so there was a lot of wastage with each use – not what you want when the price tag is high. I tried to stop the pump mid-way to prevent wastage, but it was fiddly. Other than that, I’m a big fan of the product.
Best for: Soothing
LAVERA MY AGE COOLING EYE ROLL-ON, £16.90 for 7ml (www.lavera.co.uk)
What they say: Lavera Faces MY AGE Organic Cooling Eye Roll On refreshes the eye area, dimishing puffiness and dark circles. It contains powerful anti wrinkle ingredients, Organic White Tea and Karanja Oil. Co enzyme Q10, Hyaluronic Acid and Aloe Vera, cools, moisturises and firms the skin around the eye area.
The Results: I often wake up with puffy eyes and dark circles, especially after late nights – so I was very keen to test this roller-ball, which promises to tackle both problems. And I’m pleased to report that it’s my new ‘must-have’ product! The roller-ball itself is large and feels very cooling as it rolls over the eye area. It delivers the perfect amount of product to skin, which I would describe as a cooling fluid or serum. Totally irrelevant to the efficiency, but worth mentioning that it also has a lovely fragrance, which makes it a pleasure to use. Although my dark circles remained, I noticed a marked difference in the puffiness of my eyes after using the product. I would definitely recommend it.
Best for: Puffiness
CLARINS EYE CONTOUR GEL, £25.54 for 20ml (http://uk.clarins.com)
What they say: This daily treatment reduces puffiness, minimises dark circles and tones the eyelids. The ultra-fresh gel formula soothes eyes and its super-lightweight, non-oily formulation is suitable for even the most sensitive eyes.
The Results: This tube looks very small, but it contains 20ml of product, which is generous for the price. The blue-tinged gel has a thin texture, so a pea-sized amount is enough to cover the skin around both eyes. Due to the fluid nature, it takes quite a while to fully dry, so I needed to wait a few minutes before applying my makeup in the morning. The fact that it’s suitable for sensitive eyes is important to me - and I suffered no irritation whatsoever. It took a week of use before I started noticing results, but I am now convinced that the skin underneath my eyes (and my eyelids) is less puffy when I wake up. I also liked the fact it could be applied over makeup during the day to soothe irritated eyes.
Best for: Sensitive eyes
CLINIQUE ALL ABOUT EYES SERUM DE-PUFFING EYE MASSAGE, £20 for 15ml (www.clinique.co.uk)
What they say: This instantly cooling serum helps massage away bags, refreshes and hydrates puffy eyes on contact. Brightens eye area immediately and over time. Combats dark circles, too. With caffeine, potent antioxidants and soothing botanicals.
The Results: I’ve tried everything to get rid of the dark circles and puffy bags under my eyes – but nothing makes a difference, so I have accepted that concealer is the only solution. So when I was handed this product, I didn’t have high hopes. I did, however, really enjoy using it. The roller-ball not only feels lovely and cooling, but it makes application really quick and easy – so great for people that value extra seconds in the morning! The silky serum dries within seconds and the eye area feels hydrated and soothed. After the first use, I noticed less puffiness, but no improvement to the dark circles. A week later, I am thrilled to report that I have started noticing subtle improvements – nothing dramatic, but it is certainly making a difference.
Best for: Long term use
ALPHA-H ABSOLUTE EYE COMPLEX, £34.50 for 15ml (www.bathandunwind.com)
What they say: A hydrating, skin lifting gel serum uniquely formulated to use over the entire orbital area up to lash level and over the eye lid to combat dark circles, puffiness, hooded eyes and fine lines.
The Results: I’m already a huge fan of Alpha-H – especially the product Liquid Gold – so I was pleased to be asked to test the Eye Complex. I have just turned 40 and lines and wrinkles are my biggest skincare concern – but I also suffer from puffiness and dark circles, especially since I’ve had my three children! This clear gel had a silky texture and smoothes easily into skin, drying within 30 seconds. It feels wonderfully cooling and I noticed the puffiness literally shrinking before my eyes in the mirror after the first application – amazing! I’ve been using it every morning and bedtime for 30 days – and although there are no dramatic results concerning fine lines around my eyes, the area looks smoother and firmer. I will definitely continue using it.
Best for: Anti-ageing
COMFORT ZONE EYE SUPREME CREAM GEL, £25 for 15ml (www.comfortzoneskincare.com)
What they say: A cool moisturizing and anti-stress cream-gel that visibly reduces dark circles and puffiness around the eyes. Ideal for contact lenses wearers and people who spend hours in front of the computer.
The Results: The stylish navy and silver packaging screams luxury – and the product sounds like it was made for me, as I work full-time in front of a computer and rarely give my eyes a break. The product – a hybrid between a cream and a gel – didn’t disappoint. It was easy to control the amount of product that came out of the tube and it felt incredibly cooling as I applied it to the skin around my eyes. I have dry skin and after just a week of use, I noticed that the area around my eyes felt better hydrated, more supple, and more comfortable at the end of the day. For premium skincare, I think it’s a reasonable price to pay and I would recommend it.
Best for: 24-hour hydration
Blog: LOUISE EMMA CLARKE - FOUNDING EDITOR OF THE-BEAUTY-PAGES.COM – TESTS THE AVEDA SMOOTH INFUSION RANGE (28.01.11)
Sponsored Post
Last week, Krista Madden told you about her trip to the Aveda Salon to test the Aveda Smooth Infusion range (scroll down to read her blog) – and this week, it was my turn to test the products…
The products landed on my desk at the perfect time… I was about to fly off to join my new husband in Dubai, where he lives and works.
I love hot weather, but my hair doesn’t. Before I jet away, I imagine smooth, shiny, flowing locks when I’m on the beach, when we head out to dinner in the evening, and when we’re enjoying cocktails in a swanky bar. Sadly, it’s not a reality when I jet down – as soon as I hit the humidity, frizz and static feature as regularly on the holiday as bikinis and bottles of SPF…
Aveda Smooth Infusion Shampoo, Conditioner and Style-Prep Smoother promised to keep my locks under control – so I packed them in my suitcase and jetted away with high hopes…
From the first use, I noticed a difference. Using the products was a real pleasure – they boast an incredible scent and silky, indulgent textures (more about that next week). I used the Shampoo and Conditioner in the shower, then smoothed through the Style-Prep Smoother immediately before drying. I noticed that my hair suffered less static immediately after I blow-dried.
The real test was when I stepped outside... That lunchtime, I was meeting some girlfriends for lunch, sat outside in the balmy 28’C heat for over three hours. As soon as I got home, I ran to the bathroom to check my hair. I’d be lying if I said that there was no frizz at all – but the improvement was noticeable.
Over the next couple of weeks, I used the products every day – and was equally impressed after each use. Overall, my hair is far more manageable – I can style it without worrying that the frizz will ruin my hard work as soon as I step out into the heat. As an added bonus, it feels softer and appears far glossier.
I will definitely continue to use these products – not just when I’m in Dubai, but when I’m back at home (the rain, trips on the tube, and stints in the gym are equally responsible for my frizz problems).
Next week, I’ll tell you more about the products!

Treatment Review: RODIAL A-LIST FACIAL, GLOW SPA BELGRAVIA (21.01.11)
What it promises: If you are desperately seeking the secret to Hollywood A-Lister’s perfect skin, this is the treatment for you. Using the highly sought-after GlamOxysnake Serum (known in the industry as ‘botox in a bottle’), the facial targets fine lines and wrinkles to reveal smooth, glowing, radiant skin. It combines the indulgence of a 60-minute, ultra-relaxing, sleep-inducing treatment with the very latest skincare technology.
What happens: Glow Spa Belgravia is based just a short walk from Sloane Square tube – if you can drag yourself away from the tempting array of designer boutiques and coffee shops that you will pass on the way. The spa itself is modern, sleek, and very stylish. I was lead downstairs to a treatment room dressed in shades of cream and sunshine yellow, with splashes of coffee-coloured wood. It had that divine ‘luxury spa’ scent – and immediately lulled me into a state of relaxation. The facial lasts for 60 minutes – but I was convinced it had lasted for at least 90 and had to check the time with my therapist Cheryl afterwards. That’s not to say that it felt rushed – it was quite the opposite and I was on the verge of dropping off to sleep within minutes of arriving on the treatment bed. The facial includes cleansing, exfoliation, mask, application of the GlamOxysnake Serum, hydration, and a blissful shoulder, head massage and hand massage. Afterwards, I was handed a cup of soothing herbal tea and given time to bring myself back to the real world, before heading back onto the stylish streets of Belgravia outside.
The Results: I’ve lost count of the number of facials I have tested over the last few years, but this is the treatment that stands out. I have now visited the spa twice, choosing to return in late December for a facial just before my wedding – which is testament to the fabulous results. After the treatment, I was taken aback by how smooth, even-toned, and radiant my skin appeared. I didn’t have to apply any makeup before heading home, nor in the days afterwards. On my wedding day, my skin glowed – and for that reason, I will always be very grateful. To say that I recommend this treatment is an understatement. It’s pricey, but if you have a big event coming up, ‘Glow Spa Belgravia’ should be the first words on your lips.

Blog: KRISTA MADDEN – OF HANDPICKED MEDIA – TAKES THE AVEDA SMOOTH INFUSION CHALLENGE (21.01.11)
Sponsored Post
This time of year is just horrible if you want to have straight, smooth hair, English winters do nothing for our attempts for ‘good hair days’ – and I’m always on the hunt for products that can work against the dreaded flyaway mess that I end up with until spring comes along!
Aveda Smooth Infusions range is perfect for those of us that have hair that is prone to frizz - if that isn’t you, then I hate you (sorry to digress). Aveda even start the whole treatment process with a Shampoo and Conditioner, which is made for the job!
We went en masse to all test out the Smooth Infusion range at the Aveda Concept Store in Holborn - and looking around the foyer, it was safe to say that we all really needed a bit of TLC for our frazzled hair - it didn’t help that is was raining outside!
Allocated with our own hair stylist, we were taken through the new product range and advised what would work best on our hair. We then discussed the benefits of using certain products to achieve the styles we wanted and were given blow drying tips to use at home. Aveda actually have a blow dry option, where you can watch them dry one side, where they teach you how to achieve a salon finish at home, and then you can take over the hairdryer to finish the other half with their guidance. I wanted a total pamper so Zak was happy to do mine while I decided what canapé to have and sat on Twitter!
The Smooth Infusion Shampoo and Conditioner contain aloe, which creates a smooth new surface on hair and botanical ingredients which defend against humidity for up to 12 hours. I loved the smell of them, a fresh citrus-floral blend of bergamot, Bulgarian rose and Australian sandalwood.
For extra protection against frizz you can use the Style-Prep Smoother, which coats the hair without leaving it heavy or oily - but just helps to smooth the hair cuticles further. I like a mousse on my hair so Zak, my stylist used the Aveda Phomollient, which is actually one of my favourites, - it gives body without leaving a sticky residue on your hair. My blow dry looked lovely, I was really impressed with how glossy and smooth my hair looked afterwards and it lasted for the next 2 days with absolutely no frizz - a huge hit with me.
The Aveda Concept store is definitely worth a visit and their Smooth Infusions blowdries are amazing and start at a very reasonable £29. Plus throughout January and February 2011 visit any participating Aveda salon and receive a complimentary trio sample pack of Smooth Infusion™ Shampoo, Conditioner and Style Prep Smoother.

Carry a pack of Simple’s Kind To Eyes Eye Make Up Remover Pads, £3.87 (www.simple.co.uk) to prevent panda eyes or dress your upper lashes with a layer of rain, sweat and tear-proof mascara like Clinique’s Lash Power Mascara, £15 (www.clinique.co.uk).
Don’t forget about your lips, especially during the winter months. Blistex’s Intensive Moisturiser is ideal, £2.30 (www.blistex.co.uk) or add a splash of colour with UNE Sheer Lips Balm, £7.99 (Boots Nationwide).
Address your aching limbs by smothering them with Ole Henriksen’s Muscle Comfort Lotion, £30 (www.liberty.co.uk). The combination of peppermint, geranium and lavender will stimulate and sooth tired muscles.
And don’t forget to moisturise… Sarona Taylor, Personal Trainer and Sports Massage Therapist (www.theliftfitness.com) says: “Vitamin E face cream is really important. When you exercise you produce damaging free radicals, which can age the skin. Vitamin E helps to mop up free radicals and protect your skin against damage.” Liz Earle Skin Repair Moisturiser, £17.30 (http://uk.lizearle.com) is top of our list.
Invest in appropriate sportswear. Have your gait measured at a professional sports shop before splurging on a pair of trainers. And always carry a clean pair of socks! “Looking after you feet is essential,” says Taylor, “Always wear a clean pair before each session and never keep them longer than a few months – the engineered padding wears thin and will lead to rubbing, sore and hard patches of skin.”
DANCE
Ballet and dance are de rigeur in both film and fashion this year but they’re also taking the exercise world by storm.
Once you’ve bought your dance kit - check out www.Freddy.it for affordable and classic wraparound cardigans, leotards, ballet and jazz shoes or echo Flashdance with America Apparel.net’s lycra fare - don’t neglect your skincare regime.
Monica Zamora, Ex-prima ballerina and Director of Golborne Place (www.golborneplace.com) recommends a traditional routine: “I used to wear heavy makeup when I performed and it was very important that I didn’t become lazy. I still maintain a strict cleanse, tone and moisturise routine to keep my skin looking healthy and clear.”
Dermalogica’s Special Cleansing line (0800 591818) offers a daily deep cleanse and hydration regime for even problematic skin.
Combat perspiration with a mineral salt based deodorant, like Crystal’s Roll-On, £3.49 (Boots Nationwide) to ensure a dry, longer lasting freshness.
Leotard plus vigorous exercising = chaffing. Avoid this highly possible side-effect by dabbing a little Vaseline (Boots Nationwide) to the problem area.
If you dancing regularly, follow with an intensive moisturing mask twice weekly, like The Sanctuary 5 Minute Thermal Detox Mask, £10.20 (www.thesanctuary.co.uk) to draw out impurities. It’ll leave skin smooth and soft whilst also helping to combat blemishes.
And if you start to suffer from cramp in your legs and feet, Zamora recommends carrying a ‘Spikey’ ball in your handbag. “Most of the population, dancers and well-heeled city workers alike, suffer from tight hamstrings that eventually effect your lower back. Simply step on a spikey ball and massage back and forth to release any unwanted tension.”
GYM
Hardcore gym sessions require a similar kit to runners - but for body pump or anything that involves lifting weights, the skin on your hands can be in for a rough time. Use a nourishing hand cream like Aveda Hand Relief, £17 (www.aveda.co.uk) before and after to keep them soft.
If you’re time poor, look out for multi-tasking lotions and potions that’ll help speed up your gym experience. Fudge Daily Mint Moisturising Hair & Body Wash, £9.95, (Salons Nationwide) is an invigorating body wash and hair cleanser in one.
Post exercise, Sarona Taylor of The Lift (www.theliftfitness.com) recommends a contrast shower. “To help muscles recover, shower for two minutes under hot water, followed by 30 seconds cold. Repeat three to six times depending on how brave you are and feel the soreness disappear.”
If you’re still suffering days later, rub joints and muscles with VIE at home Keep Moving Manuka Honey Muscle & Joint Superbalm, £12 (www.vieathome.com) to soothe any swelling or inflammation.
Classics like Johnson’s Baby Powder and Oil (from £1.29), will lock in moisture and disguise any stale odours.
While Steamcream, £10 (www.steamcream.co.uk) is a great body, hand and face hydrator and its limited edition tin will fit conveniently into any bag pocket. Or use Bliss Body Butter, £16.10 (www.blissworld.co.uk) for a luxe, intensive moisturiser.
SWIMMING
Hair and skin care should be the main focus for all water babes.
If you’re a regular swimmer, it’s worth buying chlorine removal shampoo like Paul Mitchell’s Clarifying Shampoo Three, £9.75 and Original Leave-in Conditioner, £11.50 (www.paulmitchell.com) to ensure hair is thoroughly clean.
But as Jonathan Long Co-founder of Lockonego. (www.Lockonego.com, 394 King’s Road, London, SW10 0LN, 020 7795 1798) purports: “There’s no need to bundle your gym bag with a cornucopia of products. Following a shower you can smooth and hydrate towel dry hair, and tame frizz in seconds without expensive styling products. Simply grab an un-scented body butter and massage a pea size amount into the ends of your hair for instantly super soft and hydrated locks. Or Try E45 which works a treat for dry un-tamed hair.”
Once a week, apply a moisturising hair mask like Phytojoba Masque, £15.60, (www.lookfantastic.com) to rejuvenate and strengthen stressed locks. Or carry some of Nurture’s new anti-ageing Hair Conditioning Treatment capsules in your kit, £7.95 (www.healthspannurture.co.uk). These mono-dose capsules contain a nourishing blend of ingredients, such as keratin and apricot kernel oil, which will help boost dry hair. Just massage in after washing and style as normal.
Use a body scrub like Bliss Fat Girl Slim, £28.60 (www.blissworld.co.uk) to remove dead skin cells and help stimulate and improve skin tone. Finish by smothering your body in Neutrogena’s Deep Moisture Body Lotion. £6 (www.neutrogenauk.co.uk) for smooth, supple and replenished skin.
YOGA
Yoga enthusiasts can opt for an all-round holistic approach with natural and organic products. It goes without saying that water is the elixir of life so drink plenty before and after class but try to abstain during unless instructed to by your teacher.
Yoga matt, water bottle and towel in tow, tie your hair back with a Linziclip, £2.50 (www.amazon.co.uk) – unlike most other hair clips, these strong claw clips have a flat-back design to prevent them digging into the back of your head while you’re lying on your matt. Better then elastic bands, it means you can’t tie them around your wrist and restrict your blood flow.
If you practise yoga at home create a sensory ambience with Shiffa’s musky Healing candle, £32.50 (www.shiffa.com) or light Rituals’ Hammam Secret Eucalyptus & Rosemary candle, £13.90 (www.uk.ritualsstore.com). Concentrate on your breathing and inhale the calming aromas.
After class Caudalie’s Fleur de Vigne Shower Gel, £8.50 (www.spacenk.co.uk) will refresh with its delicate watermelon and floral scent.
If you’re a bath girl, new British brand, Bodhi’s Bath Therapy will take your bathing ritual to a new uplifting level, £22.50 (www.bodhi.uk.com). Take your pick from an array of evocative scents including Jasmine and Ylang Ylang to help you relax and unwind further.
PILATES
If gizmos and gadgets are your thing and you can’t make your Thursday night Pilates class, do it yourself. Zamora of Golborne Place recommends carrying a small set of medi bands in your handbag. If you’re a little stiff after sitting at your desk for a long period of time do a couple of overhead circular movements to open up the shoulder and stretch your arms.
If you do manage to drag yourself to a class, take Ole Henrikson Truth To Go Face Wipes, £20 (www.selfridges.co.uk) to remove dirt and grime before and after your session.
And if you suffer from cold feet or want to hide your tootsies, wear Sweaty Betty Pilates Socks, £12 (www.sweatybetty.com).
Pilates is a strenuous regime and aches are to be expected. “Massage is a great way to help ease aches and pains,” explains Taylor. `“It’ll ease tight spots and flush fresh blood to the overworked areas to aid recovery. Just massage oil gently into your skin over any achy spots using gentle circular movements.”
Dr Hauschka’s Birch Arnica Body Oil, £17.11 (www.drhauschka.co.uk) works by activating the skin’s metabolism and encouraging blood circulation – apply immediately after bathing to lock in the moisture. And if you buy now you’ll receive an organic Fair Trade wash bag to carry it in!
Pilates is renowned for strengthening your back and toning stomach muscles, but why not speed up your results with a helping hand?
Nip + Fab’s Tummy Fix, £18.85 (www.nipandfab.com) sold out first time around and now the miracle gel is back to fight the flab. Containing amarashape, to help sculpt and promote elasticity and bitter orange, to give a firmer appearance, this stomach flattener is Pilates ultimate partner in crime.
Editor’s Letter (21.01.11)
A recent survey – conducted by high street mecca Superdrug – reveals that 61% of women wear makeup every single day, 42% feel naked without it, and 77% believe it gives them a confidence boost. To me, these statistics aren’t surprising… I’ve never worn a lot of makeup – but I’ve been wearing a smudge of kohl eyeliner on my lashline, a dot of concealer where needed, and a slick of mascara since I was 14 years old. I’d be happy to leave the house without wearing it – but only if it was the middle of the night. I definitely feel naked without it and would be embarrassed if someone knocked on the door. To me, wearing makeup is as important as wearing underwear – in fact, it’s a lot more important… Writing as a beauty journalist, I’m sure that none of this will shock you – but I’d love to hear your own thoughts on the subject. Email me at editor@the-beauty-pages.com.
Bobbi Brown. On the subject of how makeup makes us feel, I love Bobbi Brown’s new Pretty Powerful Palettes (£42). The brand is celebrating the first anniversary of its Pretty Powerful Campaign, which encourages women to follow their own path and enhance their individual beauty – whether that’s with a slick of nude lipgloss or with a full face of makeup. The two new anniversary palettes are filled with flattering shades of pink. Bobbi explains: “The palettes create a healthy look – because nothing is more beautiful to me than a healthy complexion.” www.bobbibrown.co.uk
Marc Jacobs. Marc Jacobs has created some of my all-time favourite perfumes, with Daisy and Lola very near the top of the list – so I was more than a little excited to discover that purse-sized bottles had just been launched at The Perfume Shop. No need to lug around the full bottles, as these little beauties (and they really are beautiful) are as light as a feather. Daisy EDT 20ml Purse Spray & 15ml Refill is priced at £28.50 and Lola EDT 20ml Purse Spray, 20ml Refill and purse is priced at £41.50. www.theperfumeshop.com
Seche Vite. In the quest to save money in dark, miserable January, I’ve spent the week perfecting my home manicure. The product I’m massively impressed with is Seche Vite Fast Dry Top Coat (£8.95). The patented formula allows it to penetrate through the nail lacquer to the base coat, forming a single solid coating for a much more durable finish. Better still, it’s guaranteed not to yellow – which is important to me, as I tend to wear nude shades on my talons. It dries really quickly and gives the most brilliant shiny, glossy finish! www.nailsbymail.co.uk
Goodworks. I’ve always enjoyed using products by goodworks, which supports the charity Kids Company with every sale – but hadn’t cracked open a bottle of Karma Shower Gel (£7.83) until last week. I wish I had discovered it earlier! It has the scent of a luxury spa, with notes of Cedarwood, Rose, and Jasmine. It smells like it should cost at least triple the price – and it leaves me feeling smiley and uplifted. Better still, it has a silky texture and leaves my skin calm and cleansed. I will be stocking up! www.boots.com
Special Offers. If you haven’t checked out our Special Offers section this January, make sure you take a look… It’s packed with fabulous offers, including 30% off the Browhaus ‘Lash in Bloom’ Eyelash Extension treatment, 20% off Bravura London Skincare, 20% off Ginerva Marvel Gel, and £40 off an Intraceuticals Facial with Julia Hart. Tried & Tested: CREAM BLUSHERS (21.01.11)
Add some colour to your complexion this January, with our pick of cream blushers.
BECCA Lip and Cheek Crème, £24 (www.beccacosmetics.com)
What they say: Created to suit any complexion, this versatile, super blendable crème can be applied over or under other makeup for an effortless, natural-looking finish, without shimmer. Containing anti-oxidant vitamin E, it is both preservative and paraben-free.
The Results: The compact is small, but it contains a generous amount of product and a mirror, which is great for application on the go. I liked the texture of the blusher, which is soft and very easy to blend into skin. I tested the colour ‘Tuberose’, which gave a really natural flush to my cheeks – it looked like I’d just been on a long walk with the dog, rather than just got out of bed! It lasted fairly well, although I re-applied after lunch to boost the colour – easy enough, as the compact is small and light enough to carry around in my handbag. I also tried it on my lips and it gave a great colour, but I must admit that I found it a bit drying.
Best for: Application on the go
CLINIQUE BLUSHWEAR CREAM STICK, £19 (www.clinique.co.uk)
What they say: Convenient touch-on, stay-on, cream-to-powder cheek colour. Glides over the skin with fingertip control. Blends easily. Blush stays see-through while it builds in colour. Transfer- and water-resistant. Colour-true.
The Results: I was impressed when I saw how much blusher was contained in this stick – it would last for months! However, I did need to use a little more than I expected, as the colour is quite faint at first. For this reason, it would be good for those prefer a natural look, as the colour can be gradually built up. The texture was soft and creamy, which made it easy to blend into cheekbones. I also like the fact there was no mess, as it can be applied directly onto skin. The colour lasted well – I would definitely recommend it.
Best for: Natural look
TOPSHOP BLUSH, £6 (www.topshop.com)
What they say: Lightweight cream to powder blush that melts into the skin giving a natural luminous, radiant finish.
The Results: The white plastic packaging, decorated in black polka dots, does look a little cheap – but so does the price tag, so that can be forgiven. Inside, the compact contains a large mirror, which is a big plus point. The blusher has a buttery texture, melting on my finger before application. It’s very easy to blend, taking just seconds to work into skin – and once applied, the result is matte – so great for those who want a shine-free result. I was impressed by the colour, which is noticeable and long-lasting – it’s far better than what I was expecting for the budget price.
Best for: Matte result
JEMMA KIDD MAKE UP SCHOOL BLUSHWEAR CRÈME CHEEK COLOUR, £13 (www.lookfantastic.com)
What they say: Add a natural, youthful touch of colour to the skin and a flawless velvet powder finish with Jemma Kidd Blush Wear Crème Cheek Colour. This lightweight, long-wear crème to powder blush works effortlessly over foundation or bare skin.
The Results: I’ve heard a lot about makeup artist Jemma Kidd, but I’ve never tried her products – so I was pleased to be handed this pot of bright blusher from the range. I’m not scared of bright colours, as I have black skin and enjoy experimenting with those hues when I do my makeup – and so ‘Guava’ was probably the colour I would have picked from the shelf if it had been my choice. I was surprised by how thick the texture was – it was almost like a cream, but becomes dry and powder-like as soon as I applied it to skin. The colour is great – it’s noticeable and has impressive staying power. I’m pleased to have discovered it.
Best for: Colour pigment
NARS CREAM BLUSH, £20.50 (www.spacenk.co.uk)
What they say: Moisture-rich cream finish formula that provides smooth, silky color for naturally luminous skin. Delivers long-lasting color with a velvety texture and blends easily for healthy glowing skin.
The Results: I love the stylish packaging, which is typical of NARS – and the wide mirror makes application easy, as you can see your whole face. Despite being creamy, the texture is quite dry on application – so I recommend blending it into skin as quick as possible, before it has a chance to settle. I tried “Constantinople” and the colour is gorgeous – just right for my olive skin tone. It was noticeable, but natural, which is the perfect balance. The best thing about this blusher, however, was how long it lasted – I could still see the colour when I came to remove my makeup that evening.
Best for: Long-lasting results
CLARINS MULTI-BLUSH CREAM COMPACT, £16.85 (http://uk.clarins.com)
What they say: A cute take-anywhere compact. This ingenious product packs a three-in-one performance for cheeks, eyes and lips.
The Results: Although the brand targets this product towards cheeks, with the name ‘multi-blush’, I loved the fact it could be used on eyes and lips. I tried “Raspberry” – a colour-popping pink. Best suited to darker skin tones, the texture is creamy on the finger, yet dry and powdery on the skin. I didn’t find it as easy to blend as other cream blushers I’ve tried, but if done quickly, it can still give a really natural result. On lips, I loved it – and the fact it is so small and portable makes it the ideal multi-tasker to throw into the bottom of my handbag.
Best for: Versatility
Spa Review: THE CLUB HOTEL & SPA, JERSEY (14.01.11)
Location: The Club Hotel & Spa, Green Street, St. Helier, Jersey, JE2 4UH. 01534 876500 www.theclubjersey.com
Facilities: Located just ten minutes from the ferry terminal and airport, The Club Hotel and Spa is a small luxury hotel on the edge of bustling St Helier. The spa itself is tucked away in the bowels of the building, the low lighting and subtle décor so soft and calming it soon puts you at ease. The website describes it as ‘sublime’ - but for me, it was more of a comforting sanctuary. And with no gym, the focus really is on relaxation. There is a good-sized salt-water pool with a bubbling hydrotherapy bench, an invigorating salt cabin, aromatic sauna, and relaxing steam room, as well as an experience shower to dowse yourself in Atlantic rain when you are done. However, where the spa really excels is with its extensive and professional treatments filled with organic ingredients. Reflexology, hot stone massages, Ayurvedic facials, gentlemen’s grooming and pregnancy treatments, as well as the usual manicures and pedicures, make you feel truly spoilt for choice. It is considerably cheaper than most London-based spas too. In the summer, the outdoor pool is a hot spot for beautiful bathers, but it was a little chilly when I visited so I remained firmly indoors. However, by far the best bit about the whole experience was the phenomenal Michelin Star food in the Bohemia restaurant, which again was so reasonably priced, it undid all my good work in the pool!
Ambience: The spa prides itself on being approachable, relaxed and unpretentious. Small and discreet, with lots of dim lighting, it makes the perfect destination for a romantic get-away with someone who hasn’t yet seen you in your swimwear. The staff are attentive - but not too much so. The only downside is the relaxation room is small, just four day beds, so if there are more than two couples hoping to chill with a cup of herbal tea then it’s back in the pool, which is a shame. The bedrooms are sumptuous, however, with plenty of fluffy towels, pillows which seem to swallow you up, L’Occitane toiletries and a homemade biscuit at bedtime.
Treatments reviewed:
The Rasul mud chamber, 45 minutes, £60 for two sharing. This playful yet pampering treatment allows you and your partner to smear each other in warm mineral-rich Rasul mud in your own private chamber beneath a roof of stars. We began by exfoliating with a gentle salt scrub, which we then rinsed off in the shower inside the chamber. Then in the steam room we smoothed the mud all over as the hot steam makes it sink deep into the pores. This is the perfect choice for spa virgins as it’s so messy and so much fun – my boyfriend and I wallowed like a pair of contented hippopotamuses. But it also is wonderful for detoxifying and reconditioning your skin, leaving it beautifully soft and smooth.
The Shankara Bliss treatment, one hour 50 minutes, £135.
I enjoyed this incredibly indulgent Ayurvedic body treatment on the first day of my trip, and it was the perfect way to really zone out, relax and relish the whole experience. It began with gentle body brushing, followed by a rich aromatic herbal paste which was massaged all over my body, before I was wrapped in cling film and enveloped in a warm blanket. As the paste gets to work, my feet were massaged using a very soothing cool silver bowl technique, which balances the energy in the body. After a soothing face and scalp massage, I washed off the mud in the shower, conveniently situated in the treatment room, and lovely hot oil was smothered all over me. To finish, there was the Shirodhara treatment where warm oil is slowly dripped into your “third eye” on the forehead to still the mind and soothe the central nervous system. By the end I could barely stand I was so relaxed, and for the rest of the day I floated around rebalanced and definitely in an overall state of bliss.
TRIED & TESTED... SPOT TREATMENT PENS (14.01.11)
Skin suffering following the festivities? Take your pick from our selection of spot treatment pens.
OLE HENRIKSEN ROLL-ON BLEMISH ATTACK, £20 (0207 235 5000)
What they say: This star product contains acne fighters; Benzoyl Peroxide, Salicylic Acid and Zinc. The blemish zapping cream kills bacteria and gently removes dead skin cells while the Sugar Cane and Sugar Maple extracts stimulate cell renewal. At the same time Thermal clay, Kaolin and Zinc absorb excess oils and draw out impurities.
The Results: I’m quite self-conscious about my skin and I’ve tried everything - from expensive brands to toothpaste. I really liked this product. The bright colour looks great, but also made it easy to find in my kit. It’s small, which meant I could carry it around with me and touch up as required - and I liked the rollerball format for easy, targeted application. It has a strong, medicated scent, which many people might not like – but for me, it reinforced that it was working. It’s not a miracle solution, but I think that by helping to keep my spots clean, it did speed up the healing process. I found it dried out my spots and the skin around them - so it might not be suited to those with drier skin than me.
Best for: Oily skin
GOOD THINGS STOP THAT SPOT GEL, £4.99 (Boots Nationwide)
What they say: This brilliant anti-bacterial gel contains active extracts of willow bark, liquorice, papaya and acai to help tackle unwanted breakouts.
The Results: I really liked the packaging, which has a fun, illustrated design. I wouldn’t necessarily describe the tube with pinpoint applicator as a pen, because it’s easier to apply a small amount to a fingertip and dab onto the spot. I liked the sweet berry scent, rather than an overpowering medicinal one. The best thing about this product is that it really does work! Redness and swelling were considerably reduced by the morning, so I’ll definitely be keeping one of these in my armoury to attack spots that have a habit of raising their ugly heads before a big event!
Best for: Overnight results
THE DOCTOR BRAND BLEMISH RELIEF SPOT ELIMINATOR, £6.95 (www.thedoctorbrand.co.uk)
What they say: Blemish Relief Spot Eliminator provides on-the-spot relief for blemishes, whilst simultaneously calming and soothing the skin. Scientifically formulated with Sulfur, this treatment reduces the severity of blemishes and encourages clear skin.
The Results: I was drawn to this brand, because it combines medical knowledge with natural elements, such as being free from parabens. It certainly looks clinical, but it’s mild enough to be applied whenever needed, which I really liked. By no means did it solve my long-term skin concerns, but I did see an improvement to my blemishes, particularly the time taken to heal. The aspect that impressed me the most, however, was that I noticed an improvement to the texture of my skin, which meant it was easier to apply my trusty cover-up. It’s a very reasonable price for a science driven brand.
Best for: All round performance
THE BODY SHOP TEA TREE BLEMISH GEL, £4.50 (www.thebodyshop.co.uk)
What they say: A convenient portable stick that helps to cleanse and fight blemishes without over drying the skin.
The Results: I liked the convenient size of this - I’m quite fussy about using my products for the recommended time then discarding for hygiene reasons, particularly anything which goes on my face - and the small size and affordable price encouraged this. I liked the gel formula, although I did find that it dried out in the tube quite quickly. It has a strong scent of natural tea tree, but I didn’t find it unpleasant. I found the gel to be really effective at reducing redness, drying out my spots and as a natural antibacterial, keeping them clean.
Best for: Natural antibacterial
ANATOMICALS ZAP! ZAP! ZAP! GETS THAT CHAP DAY & NIGHT SPOT STICK, £3 (www.anatomicals.net)
What they say: A superhero amongst spot treatments, the Anatomicals Zap! Zap! Zap! Gets that Chap Day & Night Spot Stick is a magic wand of bacteria busting ingredients that’s more than a match for breakout baddies.
The Results: I tend to invest heavily in my skin, opting for science led, pricey brands - so I was a little dubious upon receiving this that it would actually work. Having said that, the tongue-in-cheek slogan and fun packaging was quite a refreshing change from the clinical styles currently in my bathroom. I was pleasantly surprised upon opening the slimline box to discover a double ended pen, with a clear, lightweight gel for day and a slightly creamier formula for night time use. Each section features a sponge wand - like those you apply lipgloss with - so it’s really easy to apply directly to the blemish itself. I was pleasantly surprised with this product and its effects. I think it offers fantastic value.
Best for: Value for money
DERMALOGICA CLEAN START HIT THE SPOT, £15.35 (0800 591818)
What they say: Breakouts have finally met their match! This concentrated spot treatment absorbs without a trace, minimising breakouts while controlling future breakout activity. Sulphur helps stop breakout-causing bacteria, clearing oil and congestion fast. Soothing plant extracts help reduce redness and calm inflammation. Zinc sulphate helps purify skin.
The Results: I’ve been using Dermalogica skincare for a while now and overall, like the way it makes my skin look and feel. I do, however, still get the odd breakout along my forehead and because I generally have clear skin, I hadn’t tried the Clean Start range before, as I knew it had been specially created with young skin in mind and therefore didn’t feel it was appropriate. However, a therapist advised that the pen would be suitable for my minor breakouts. I really liked the packaging which stays true to Dermalogica’s minimalist roots but features brightly coloured text. The pen is a chunky clicker style, which is easy to use and reminds of cosmetic pen applicators, giving it a luxurious feel. I found it to be effective at treating my spots. The texture of the product is like a light gel serum and I really enjoyed using it - a strange feeling for such an unglamorous product!
Best for: Ease of application

Alternatively, try Topshop Blush in Butterscotch, £6 – an easy-to-blend cream formula that kisses skin with an iridescent glow.
We’re big fans of budget brand Barry M here at The-Beauty-Pages.com. The brand’s seasonal collections manage to capture the colours of the premium brands without the hefty price tag – and we’ve fallen for Barry M Lip Gloss Wand in Toffee, £4.49 (www.barrym.com). It’s a classic colour with a smooth finish, just like our favourite chewy treat!
New to the beauty world, high street favourite Accessorize’s makeup collection is impressive. Our pick of calorie-free beauty treats mean that you can have your cake and eat it too!

We also adore Orly Nail Polish in Cupcake, £8.95 (www.orlybeauty.co.uk) - a delicate pink shade that looks sweet without being too saccharine. It would be the ideal shade to wear for a girlie afternoon tea, but is so pretty that you’d want to wear it all the time.
If cakey desserts are more your thing, smooth Body America New York Cheesecake Body Butter, £7 for 100g (www.houseoffraser.co.uk), over skin to hydrate and delicately scent with a blend of vanilla and strawberry.
A CRAVING FOR... JELLY
From mass produced packets of sweet and sour goodies in quirky shapes to traditional sweets, there’s no shortage of inspiration for beauty companies. Models Own Nail Polish in Turkish Delight, £5 (Boots Nationwide) is a deep and exotic purple, which we’re currently loving as a wintery twist on a bright shade.
Ever tried not to lick your lips when eating an entire jelly doughnut? Well, there’s a new beauty equivalent and we defy you not to lick your lips when wearing Rimmel Royal Gloss Delicious Lipgloss in Jelly Baby, £3.99 (as before), which smells good enough to eat and has a sugary flavour!
The word ‘marshmallow’ conjures up images of pink and white fluff - perhaps being carefully toasted over a campfire – but it’s also the name of a type of herb. Naturally high in vitamins and proteins, it makes for a wonderful conditioning treatment on hair, something that Tommyguns have recognised with their Fig, Plum & Marshmallow Conditioner, £5.50 for 250ml (www.tommygunshaircare.com). If, as part of your January health kick, you’re opting for natural beauty products, try Happy Hair Days Colour Care Conditioner Marshmallow and Coconut, £3.99 for 300ml (Sainsbury’s Nationwide).
A CRAVING FOR... CANDY
When Woolworths closed its doors for the final time, most of us bemoaned the loss of our favourite Pick & Mix destination. The ritual of selecting our favourite sweets, measuring the quantities into the rustling paper bags, and crossing our fingers that our carefully saved piggy bank pennies would cover the cost was practically a rite of passage. These cherished moments are fondly remembered.
Founder of Bonbon Balm (www.bonbonbalm.com), Sally Marsh loves sweets so much that they were the inspiration behind her brand. Each of her artisan lip balms is thoughtfully presented in a frosted glass tub, which represents a hard boiled sweet disguising a soft centre. Flavours include Lemon Sherbet and Caramel Cup - but the one that’s really got us licking our lips is the unapologetically retro Parma Violet, set to launch later this spring.
London’s Nail Girls (www.nailgirls.co.uk) have also been inspired by candy, presenting their nail polishes in adorable pick ‘n’ mix bags when you buy their polishes at Selfridges. There are few better way to wear candy-inspired colours than on nails, so be sure to check out their selection, from £10. Or if you prefer classic red, try Essie Nail Polish in Lollipop, £9.50 (www.lookfantastic.com).
For devoted candy junkies, there’s no better range than the aptly named, Candy Addicted Haircare, £3.83 (www.candyaddicted.co.uk), which includes Cherry Chew Volumise Shampoo and Candy Addicted Cream Conditioner. They smell so good that you’ll be tempted to lick your fingers after use!
A CRAVING FOR... ICE-CREAM
Admit it… There are few guilty pleasures that beat a night in front of a chick flick accompanied by cosy pyjamas, a tub of ice-cream, and a spoon. Sadly, it’s not something most of us would dare to indulge in every day – so why not pamper yourself with beauty treats inspired by your favourite dessert?
A less calorific night in can be had courtesy of Lush. The creamy, strawberry scented Lush Mrs Whippy Bath Ballistic, £2.50 (www.lush.co.uk) smells so realistic that it will instantly transport you back to summer days. It’s been made using a soya milk centre to add softening benefits to your bath.
The Body Shop have returned to their roots with the introduction of some mouth-wateringly scented Bath & Shower Gels, including our favourite, Raspberry Ripple Bath & Shower Gel, £3.99 for 250ml (www.thebodyshop.co.uk). Smooth vanilla ice-cream with ribbons of unctuous raspberry syrup makes for a sugary frozen dessert, reminiscent of childhood - and this beauty treat doesn’t disappoint in recreating the experience.
Or why not incorporate ice-cream into your cosmetics? We adore Ciate Nail Polish Paint Pot in Cookies ‘n’ Cream, £9 (www.ciate.co.uk), whose name perfectly describes the creamy, long-wearing shade - and Natio Strawberry Sundae Ultra Shiny Fruit Gloss, £8 (Debenhams nationwide), a high-shine neutral lip gloss with Vitamin E, Shea Butter, Jojoba and Avocado Oil to condition.
Blog: FOUNDING EDITOR OF THE-BEAUTY-PAGES.COM – LOUISE EMMA CLARKE – FINDS OUT THE RESULTS OF THE HOVIS CHALLENGE… (14.01.11)
Sponsored Post
Last week, I explained how Hovis Wholemeal challenged me to eat breakfast every morning (scroll down to see my first blog post). I ate a really quite delicious breakfast every morning for a week - each recipe featuring two slices of Hovis Wholemeal – and felt fuller, more energetic, and more focused until lunchtime. And better still, I didn’t reach for my usual mid-morning snack to keep me going. It was a big success – and I’m the last person who expected to say that!
And it seems I wasn’t the only one who was impressed… Results of research conducted by Hovis – to mark the launch of the Hovis Stop Snacking Facebook App at www.facebook.com/hovisbakery - reveals that 64% of women who swapped their regular breakfast for Hovis Wholemeal felt fuller for longer and 86% agreed that it helped them snack less between breakfast and lunch!
I conducted my trial in the midst of a pre-wedding diet – and the lack of mid-morning snacks actually helped my quest to fit into my dress. Beforehand, I didn’t think that eating two slices of bread for breakfast would aid my healthy eating plan – but I can vouch for the results!
It’s something that could help a lot of women… The research also revealed that over half of all women (54%) can’t resist snacking on unhealthy treats throughout the day – whilst a staggering four million women in the UK (one in seven) potentially eat five or more sugary or salty snacks each and every day.
Phew, it wasn’t just me then…
Developed in conjunction with Hovis ambassador and Olympic gold medallist Victoria Pendleton, the Hovis Stop Snacking App encourages women to ditch their daily snacking vices. Victoria said, “As an athlete I understand how important it is to stay motivated in January and most importantly start the day the right way, which is why the Hovis Stop Snacking App is great. The app will encourage women to try a Hovis Wholemeal breakfast and then set a snack-related challenge in return for daily prizes, rewards for completion and a range of recipes and motivational advice from me. “
She continues, “The basic facts are simple, Hovis Wholemeal is rich in fibre which can help you feel fuller for longer and could help stop snacking. I have it for breakfast and it works for me! ”

Editor’s Letter (14.01.11)
I’d like to take this opportunity to say a huge CONGRATULATIONS to Lush co-founders Mark and Mo Constantine, who have just been awarded an OBE for their services to the beauty industry. It is very well deserved… Lush has come such a long way since Mo and Mark opened their first store in Poole, making the products by hand in a downstairs room. They are now an international brand with fans stretching across the globe. I’ve always been a big fan of Lush – in fact, I worked in the Southampton branch when I was at University, far preferring the time I spent in store to the time I spent in the lecture theatre. I’m thrilled that the beauty industry has been acknowledged in the honours – and I hope the champagne is flowing in Lush HQ!
Lush. While we’re talking about Lush… I love it when the worlds of art and beauty collide – and there are few better examples than the brand’s fabulous new Love Birds soap (£3). Of course, by the time it’s sliced up for customers, the beautiful artwork has disappeared – but you still get a pretty hunk of soap, adorned with candy-coloured flowers. Better still, the creamy formula is infused with sweet, powdery notes of Jasmine and Vanilla. The fragrance is designed to remind us of young love – I don’t know about that, but it’s definitely my new crush. www.lush.co.uk
UNE. Moving onto the world of makeup… UNE is another of my favourite brands (I admit the list is fairly long…) – and this January, there’s even more reason to discover their range of skin-friendly, natural cosmetics. Spend £15 or more on UNE products in Boots this month and you will receive the ‘Green Beauty Bible’ (worth £14.99) completely free. I already own the book – written by best selling authors Josephine Fairley and Sarah Stacey – and can highly recommend it. The perfect partnership for stretching pennies a little further this January! Boots Nationwide.
Bobbi Brown. It’s not a new launch – but I’ve just rediscovered the brilliant Bobbi Brown’s Skin Foundation SPF 15 (£29). I was a big fan when the brand first launched the product and used it every day – and now I remember why… It’s totally weightless, providing a flawless, yet natural-looking coverage. It conceals imperfections – pretty handy after the excesses of the festive season – and offers broad-spectrum UV protection. And better still, it’s impressively long-lasting. Go buy! www.bobbibrown.co.uk
ASOS. I’m loving the hair accessories at ASOS.com at the moment – especially this Vintage Style Corsage Stretch Pearl Hairband (£6). It’s incredibly versatile… It’ll work beautifully with a pastel pink dress for a spring wedding, as a funky accessory on a night out, or to give a feminine touch to jeans and a jumper. There are some really fun alternatives on the site – from faux-fur bows, to crystal grips, to sparkly headbands. And the best bit is that they are so affordable – I may well treat myself to the lot. www.asos.com
Degree Art. I’ve just discovered the website Degree Art, which sells art by students and recent graduates from the most prestigious art schools, universities, and colleges. I’ve always thought that art makes a fabulous present for big birthdays, wedding presents, anniversaries etc – and the prints on this site make buying something unique (and limited edition) that little bit more affordable. I have fallen head over heels for the work of Catherine Dwyer Harvey (Central Saint Martins graduate) – especially this quirky Queen of Hearts print (£175). www.degreeart.com
TRIED & TESTED: HYDRATING SHOWER GELS (07.01.11)
REPÊCHAGE VITA CURA TRIPLE ACTION SHOWER AND BATH GEL, £25 (www.repechageuk.com)
What they say: If a little over-indulgence during the festive period has left a few extra pounds on your hips, never fear, as the Triple Action Shower and Bath Gel will help shape up your silhouette! Containing essential oils of grapefruit, basil and three mints.
The Results: I was expecting quite a lot from this gel – especially when I saw the price! The packaging looks expensive and the scent reminds me of a luxury spa. The lather is luxurious and my skin felt great afterwards - tight and tingly. I would use something like this with the other products in the range to shape up prior to a beach holiday and I think the results would be impressive. A small complaint is that upside-down on the bathroom shelf the gel tips out into the lid. Otherwise, it’s pricey, but worth it for a treat.
Best for: Toning and firming
UPPER CANADA SOAP NATURALLY HYDRATING SHOWER GEL, £6 (01277 220 842)
What they say: The perfect start to your day, this hydrating, energising shower gel moisturises the body, leaving your skin free from impurities, and smelling gorgeous! The natural ingredients mean you don’t need to worry about chemical nasties going down the drain or irritating skin.
The Results: I liked the idea of this being olive and avocado – it makes a change from some of the more traditional ingredients you find in shower gels. It didn’t really smell like either though – it’s more like blackcurrant. I like the fact it was free from synthetic products and the packaging was nice enough too. The gel grew on me. It’s clear, but lathers really well and you don’t need much at all. What I did notice was that my skin (especially on thighs and calves) felt a lot softer during the week I used it. Good work from just a shower gel and I didn’t think the price was too bad either.
Best for: Natural ingredients
SIMPLE MOISTURISE BODY WASH, £1.99 (www.boots.com)
What they say: Simple Moisture Body Wash is a gentle cleansing body wash combined with a blend of naturally enhancing, aromatic ingredients that nourish your skin and treat your senses.
The Results: I have very dry skin and eczema on my body, so I was keen to find out whether something this inexpensive would make a difference. First of all, I liked the subtle scent. It also seemed extremely gentle on the skin, which is great for me as I have quite sensitive skin. Normally when I get out of the shower the skin on my body feels tight and dry until I apply my usual body lotion - but with this wash, I didn’t have a problem. I also felt that because of the reasonable price, I couldn’t really scrimp and got a great lather going! I would definitely buy it again, but wonder if they make a bigger bottle as it didn’t last long at all!
Best for: Budget buy
CRABTREE & EVELYN ALOE VERA HYDRATING BODY WASH, £12.00 (www.crabtree-evelyn.co.uk)
What they say: Soothe and refresh your skin with our hydrating body wash, enriched with oat amino acids and pure aloe vera extract harvested from the innermost leaves of the plant.
The Results: I like Crabtree & Evelyn products, but this bottle looked a bit more old-fashioned than the La Source line I have tried before. The scent was quite herbal and also slightly citrus – not overpowering, but not very exciting either. The wash left my skin feeling fresh, but I wouldn’t describe it as particularly well hydrated. There is a lotion to go with the wash so maybe the two together would work better. On its own I wouldn’t have said it was worth the price, but the packaging is pretty and it would make a nice gift, perhaps for someone older.
Best for: Pretty packaging
KORRES JAPANESE ROSE SHOWER GEL, £7.00 (www.bathandunwind.com)
What they say: A creamy-foam shower gel with a long-lasting moisturising effect, warmed by the scent of elegant Eastern rose petals and packed with antioxidant enzymes as well as softening and moisturising natural ingredients.
The results: I wasn’t sure about the look of this shower gel at first - but as soon as I took off the lid and sniffed it I was excited about giving it a try! I usually tend to pick unscented or hypoallergenic products, but I think this might just have changed my mind. It has a strong base note of rose, but also has a slightly fruity, lemony side that I just couldn’t get enough of. The other great thing about it is how it left my skin feeling soft – I really noticed it around my elbows and knees, which can get flaky. It’s not the cheapest, but it’s not bank-breaking either. I think I’ll buy it again and maybe even try others in the range.
Best for: Gorgeous scent
LIZ EARLE ENERGISING BODY WASH, £7.75 (http://uk.lizearle.com)
What they say: Start your day with the luxurious, invigorating and uplifting Energising Body Wash. Harnessing the power of natures detoxers, it is deliciously scented and gently cleansing, using naturally active ingredients and naturally derived foaming agents instead of harsh surfactants, leaving skin feeling velvety soft, smooth and revitalised every day – whatever your skin type.
The results: I try and use a specific body wash, rather than soap in the shower - but I don’t think I’ve ever spent quite this much on one. I could feel the difference though, right from the smell, which is really natural scent (although quite strong). The wash lathers up well and you don’t need that much. In terms of hydration, I did feel after use that my skin was soft – although I wouldn’t have gone without a body lotion. I loved the lingering scent on my skin and I think it would be a great product to use in the morning, as the smell really wakes you up. I like the pale blue packaging and displayed it with pride on my bathroom shelf!
Best for: Energy boosting
Blog: FOUNDING EDITOR LOUISE EMMA CLARKE IS CHALLENGED TO EAT A HOVIS WHOLEMEAL BREAKFAST FOR A WHOLE WEEK (07.01.11)
Sponsored Blog
When I was first challenged to eat a Hovis Wholemeal breakfast every morning, I felt a little daunted… Not because I didn’t like bread – I love bread – but because I never usually eat breakfast.
I’ve never been a regular breakfast eater – I have no memories of sitting down before school (although in my parents defence, I know it happened) and thus the first meal of the day has never really featured heavily in my life. As an adult, I have started enjoying breakfast when I’m on holiday or at a breakfast meeting (I adore Eggs Benedict) – but on a day-to-day basis, I don’t bother. I know skipping breakfast is bad for me - and I know it encourages my body to store fat, rather than shed it. I am aware it makes me far more likely to snack before lunch. But I simply don’t have the appetite, time, or patience first thing in the morning.
So when I was challenged to enjoy a Hovis Wholemeal breakfast every morning for a week – just a few weeks before Christmas and, gulp, also my wedding (for which I was on a serious diet) – I decided to grab the challenge between the horns. Yes I would eat breakfast every morning! And I would prove that it made absolutely no difference to my life!
Ladies and gents, I have been proved wrong… Over the course of the week, I enjoyed a range of delicious Hovis Wholemeal recipes – from the simple Tomatoes and Low Fat Cream Cheese (pictured), to the utterly delicious Grilled Flat Mushrooms and Poached Egg on Toast – between the hours of 8.30am and 9am. A dramatic change to the solitary cup of milky coffee I am used to first thing in the morning! My stomach could hardly believe its luck!
I expected to feel bloated, full, and uncomfortable after eating two slices of bread – but the Hovis Wholemeal breakfasts kept me full and satisfied until lunchtime (no tummy rumbling, which I am well used to!) And – thankfully – I didn’t put on a pound of weight during that pre-wedding week – in fact, I the challenge aided my diet, as I had no interest in snacking before lunchtime.
By the end of the week, my opinion had completely changed… Breakfast is the most important meal of the day – no matter what diet you are on. Hovis Wholemeal is perfect, as it’s rich in fibre – which keeps us to feel fuller for longer and stop us snacking!
The biggest endorsement, however, is that I’ve been enjoying breakfast ever since – and that comes from somebody who was totally stuck in her non-breakfasting ways!
I challenge you to try the same – and there’s now a fun Facebook App to help us. Log onto www.facebook.com/hovisbakery to join the campaign and sign up to the Hovis Stop Snacking App.
I’ll be blogging again next week – giving you some impressive facts and figures from Hovis Wholemeal’s blogger survey results – so make sure you check back for more Hovis Wholemeal information!
Feature: EVERYONE’S A WINNER (07.01.11)
There’s no shortage of Beauty Awards for brands to enter – but which products are clearing up time and time again? Here’s our guide to the best of the best…
FACE
A good way to spot a performance skincare product is by seeing if it has won any awards - and Liz Earle’s shelves must be groaning with the amount of prizes her cult cleansing kit Cleanse and Polish, £44.52 for a duo set (www.qvcuk.com), has scooped in its 15 years. In 2010, it received accolades at Red’s Best of Beauty, Woman & Home’s Best Beauty Buys and ELLE’s Beauty Awards, to name but a few.
The CEW Awards (Cosmetic Executive Women Awards) were first launched in 2006 and are now dubbed the ‘Beauty Oscars’. This year’s joint winner of Best New Everyday Skincare Product was SteamCream, £10 (www.beautybay.com). This revolutionary beauty product is a multi-use cream that takes care of dry skin, cracked hands and rough elbows. The science behind it is simple – the brand use a steaming technique that allows all the ingredients to bond loosely, creating a moisturising emulsion that allows each ingredient to penetrate your skin much more than a regular moisturiser. The handbag-friendly tins that come in a range of cool designs are fabulous, too.
Aromatherapy Associates Fine Line Facial Oil, £38.75 (www.aromatherapyassociates.com) won Best Green Skincare at the 2010 Cosmopolitan Awards. And no wonder – the super-rich treatment has proved itself a powerful anti-ageing product, using innovative natural ingredients for maximum results. It smells gorgeous too, thanks to essential oils of rose, patchouli and ylang-ylang that encourage healthy, glowing skin.
EYES
Eye products can be pricey – so why not pick one that’s been tested by panels of beauty experts? It’s a sure-fire way of getting a winning formula.
RoC Multi-Correxion Eye Cream, £11.99 (www.boots.com) came runner-up in the eye cream category in Bella magazine’s Beauty Awards. Enriched with light reflectors and an anti-dark circle ingredient, the cream helps to reduce the appearance of dark circles and under-eye bags – and gives eyes an immediate boost, too. No surprises the judges liked it.
It’s a good idea to invest in a top-quality eye makeup remover for the delicate skin around your peepers. But with so many out there, which is really worth your hard-earned cash? Clinique must have had to build an extension to house all their trophies. And one is for their Rinse-Off Eye Makeup Solvent, £14 (www.clinique.co.uk), which scored ‘Best Eye Makeup Remover’ in this year’s Company Magazine Awards. It cleans up eyes easily without disturbing other makeup, and contains no oil.
Dr Hauschka’s Eye Solace, £14.99 (www.beautybay.com) not only has a great name, it contains extracts of Eyebright, Anthyllis and Chamomile to soothe sore, reddened and overtired eyes. Perfect if you’ve been in a smoky atmosphere or sitting at a computer. And another reason to choose it? Dr Hauschka recently went home with ‘Best Natural Brand’ at The Sunday Times Style Beauty Awards 2010.
HAIR
Treat your locks to haircare that’s been chosen by beauty editors as worthy of a gong. Moroccanoil is the name on everyone’s lips these days. Previously a beauty industry secret (used by stylists and editors on fashion shoots and at awards ceremonies), Moroccanoil is gaining a loyal following with those who are looking for healthy, silky and strong hair – and it’s just been recognised at the Elle Beauty Awards 2010. Try it for yourself: Moroccanoil The Original Oil Treatment, from £27.99 (www.beautybay.com).
Known in the trade as a ‘portable beauty consultant’, The Beauty Bible advises you what to buy in every area of the beauty arena and shows that you don’t have to spend a fortune to find great beauty buys. And when authors and beauty gurus Jo Fairley Sarah Stacey announced their Beauty Bible Awards at the end of last year, Tommyguns haircare were delighted to appear not once but three times as ‘Beauty Steals’ winners. Choose the Fig & Plum Shampoo, £4.99 (www.tommygunshaircare.com).
Who better to trust when it comes to magazine awards for haircare then a hair magazine itself? The Australian brand Fudge swept the board at this year's Hair Magazine Awards, which took place in September. A star of their styling range was Salt Spray, £10.95 (www.fudgehair.co.uk), which won ‘Best Professional Texture Spray’ for its pro vitamin B formula that gives extra body and texture to dull hair and protects from UV damage.
BODY
Winter is a great time to slather on the body moisturisers and keep skin in tip-top condition under all those layers. Then you won’t have to worry so much about stripping off when the temperatures rise again!
Nip+Fab’s Multi Fix Oil, £11.95 (www.nipandfab.com) has just snapped up the prize for ‘Best Body Care Launch’ at the Pure Beauty Awards 2010, a great start for a new product. The multi-purpose skincare oil helps improve the appearance of scars, stretch marks and uneven skin tone whilst nourishing and moisturising the skin. When one product does all this, it’s no surprise that it impressed the judges.
Aromatherapy Associates are no strangers to prizes, and their Deep Relax Bath & Shower Oil, £34.75 (www.aromatherapyassociates.com) has won over 10 UK industry awards for its amazing effects. It’s even in the InStyle hall of fame, having won awards for an impressive seven years in a row. Perfect if you're feeling overtired or having trouble sleeping: it uses the aromatic oils of nature's most calming plants and flowers to help you on your way to a better night's sleep.
But let’s not leave out an award-winner for the warmer months. Elemental Herbology’s Skin Drink Summer Body Hydrator £22 (www.spacenk.co.uk) is non-greasy, ultra-hydrating body cream to soothe skin whilst protecting against premature ageing. Packed with antioxidants and sebum-regulating botanicals, the skin is left comfortable, cool and hydrated with a silky soft glow. Such a glow, in fact, that Brides Magazine recently voted it ‘Best Body Cream’.
TOOLS
If you’re investing in beauty tools you really want to be sure you’ve made a good choice. Even more reason to find out what’s been taking home the trophies...
Clarisonic Plus, £175 (www.cultbeauty.co.uk) uses sonic technology to take cleansing to a new level – which has earnt it a coveted InStyle Best Beauty Buy award to add to the brand’s impressive selection of silverware. The rapidly rotating brush gently cleanses the skin and loosens dirt, makeup and oil from pores, while the body brush head will give the rest of your skin a thorough clean and improve the appearance of cellulite. Once you get your hands on one, you’ll never go back.
This year ghd was named ‘Best Styling Tool’ by the Sunday Times Style awards. High praise indeed - but not surprising considering the meteoric rise of this hair styler brand. The ghd IV Styler, £99 (www.ghdhair.com) is the most versatile styler and is perfect for creating beautiful hair – and putting a multitude of fabulous hairstyles at your fingertips. Choose big and bouncy waves, go sleek and glossy with perfectly straight locks or add flawlessly formed curls. It’s up to you…
A gadget you don’t need to plug in, the elliptical-shaped Beautyblender cosmetic sponge, £24 for a starter kit (www.cultbeauty.co.uk) was created by two top Hollywood makeup artists to give a flawless airbrushed finish to the complexion. Its unique shape means you can use it all over the face and it is non-irritating, latex-free, non-allergenic and odourless. It’s also got a cult following – which is why it scooped the Reader’s Choice in the Allure Awards.
MEN
Let’s not leave out our other halves… Men’s grooming products are big business and there are some prestigious awards to go with them. The FHM Grooming Awards 2010 has a Best Designer Skin Care Range category – which was this year won by Clinique Skin Supplies for Men. Get him M Shave Aloe Gel, £12 (www.clinique.co.uk), a highly concentrated oil-free shaving gel that transforms into a rich lather. Softens and cushions even the heaviest beards for smooth, close shaves – and saves us from the stubble-rash complaints.
Another award-winning shaving product – which has just snapped up the 2010 CEW UK Beauty Award for Best New Male Grooming Product – is A'kin Calming After Shave Balm, available as a great 2-piece set with a Face Wash, £17.52 (www.qvcuk.com). The balm will leave his skin soft and comforted after shaving, and is perfect for sensitive, irritable and dry skin.
Men’s Health is a must-buy publication for all male grooming product junkies. Their recent Grooming Awards Winners voted Lab Series MAX-LS Age-Less Face Cream, £45 (www.mankind.co.uk) as ‘Best Anti-Ageing Product’. Described as a ‘new kid on the block’, this high-tech wrinkle-buster, based on research into the body’s own 'longevity genes', has become a bestseller in a matter of months – and scooped this trophy to become Men’s Health readers’ favourite anti-ageing cream.
Editor’s Letter (07.01.11)
Happy 2011 everybody! I hope you all had a fabulous Christmas and New Year? Once I’ve got over the passing of the festive season (my favourite time of year), I’m a big fan of January. It gives us all the chance to turn over a new leaf, clear our desks, flick open a lovely new diary, and plan for the year ahead. But for me, things in 2011 are already feeling very different… I got married on 18th December – a beautiful, snow-filled day, surrounded by all my nearest and dearest – and thus, I start this year as somebody’s wife (gulp, it still feels very strange writing that…) To celebrate my new status as a spouse, I have dedicated my first Editor’s Letter of 2011 to the brands and products that helped me feel special for the big day… Thank you for rallying around to make me feel like a princess – and if you are planning your own wedding, take note…
Rodial. I’ve lost track of how many facials I have tested over the past few years – but none have impressed me more than Rodial’s A-List Facial (£98 for 60 minutes). My skin was left clear, radiant, and incredibly smooth. So when it came to booking a pre-wedding treatment, I headed straight to Glow Urban Spa to enjoy the treatment again. I wasn’t disappointed – not does the facial do amazing things to the complexion (thanks to the expert hands of therapist Cheryl), but it is also incredibly relaxing – so it’s perfect for soothing pre-wedding nerves. Glow Urban Spa Belgravia, 44 Pimlico Road.
Elemental Herbology. I have very pale skin – and after testing a spray tan just before my hen do in November (and witnessing the astonished reactions of my friends), I realised the orange look just wouldn’t work for my wedding day. But I still wanted a hint of colour to take the edge of my (fittingly) snow-white skin. So I turned to Elemental Herbology’s fabulous Sun Kiss (£22.50). The lavender-scented moisturiser has the luxurious thickness of a body butter, yet contains subtle levels of self tanning agent to give a hint of colour to skin. I would highly recommend it to pale-toned brides-to-be. www.spacenk.co.uk
Headmasters. In the lead up to my wedding day, the question on everybody in the beauty industry’s lips seemed to be ‘where are you getting your hair done?’ Was I heading to a top celebrity stylist to have my tresses tended? Who was colouring it? What length was I having? The truth is that I headed to my local branch of Headmasters – and relaxed as they coloured my locks in my favourite shade of chestnut, cut the perfect layers, and styled to perfection. I am a huge fan of this high street hairdressing chain – and why would I take a risk before such an important day? www.hmhair.co.uk
Alpha-H. The thing I was hugely paranoid about before the wedding was spots… When I get them, they are huge and very noticeable – and the best makeup artist in the world would struggle to hide them. I was recommended to use Glycolic Acid - so I applied Alpha-H Liquid Gold Night Treatment Serum (£28) to my skin every other night, for a fortnight before the day. My skin was impressively clear throughout treatment and the weeks that have followed. It’s not the best choice for those with sensitive skin (or those planning to sunbathe on honeymoon), but I owe a lot to this bottle of liquid gold. www.cultbeauty.co.uk
Blink Brow Bar. Finally… Tidy, groomed eyebrows are a must before a wedding – and I headed to Blink Brow Bar for my regular tidy-up in the week before my big day. If you haven’t visited one of the bars before, you will be amazed at how quick, painless, and easy it is to be the proud owner of a pair of perfect arches. It isn’t the cheapest place to get it done - at £17 for their classic Eyebrow Threading – but it is definitely one of the best. To find your nearest bar, visit www.blinkbrowbar.com
Spa Review: CHAMPNEYS HEALTH RESORT, TRING (07.01.11)
Location: Champneys Tring Health Resort,
Wigginton, Tring, Herts, HP23 6HY. 0843 316 2222. www.champneys.com
Facilities: Champneys Tring Health Resort is set in a stunning English stately home in 170 acres of rolling parkland. Tensions ease from the moment you step through the grand entrance – and the friendly staff cater to your every whim. Champneys is not only a spa - it’s a gorgeous hotel, complete with beautifully decorated bedrooms, beautiful grounds and the freshest, healthiest food. On arrival, guests are given a pair of bright white slippers to pad around the resort in - and in your bedroom you’ll find a huge fluffy dressing gown – which can be worn to lunch in between treatments. The treatment list is extensive, from hot stone massages and pedicures to nourishing wraps, Carita facials and acupuncture. Each treatment room is decorated with orchids, soothing candles and smells of calming incense giving it a truly luxurious feel. If you can bear to leave the treatment room there’s a 25-metre swimming pool, which all guests are allowed to use, alongside a steam room, sauna and whirlpool. There’s even a hair salon if you fancy a quick trim before dinner. If the weather permits, we suggest a stroll around the grounds before your treatment - the calm tranquil setting is the perfect surrounding for a relaxing break.
Ambience: I visited Champneys on a Monday and it was just as busy as a weekend – perhaps because it was close to Christmas and everyone was treating themselves to a pampering before the party season. Despite this, the atmosphere was calm, relaxing and luxurious. There were fresh fruit smoothies available and the friendly staff were always on hand to recommend treatments to suit our needs. It was impossible not to feel totally at peace.
Treatment Reviewed: Champneys massage, £70 for 55 minutes (one therapist)
This relaxing massage is designed to increase blood and lymphatic flow while promoting a sense of wellbeing. As I entered the darkened room, lit with flickering candles, my friendly therapist asked if there was a particular part of my body I wanted her to concentrate on – the massage can be tailored to suit your needs. Once we’d settled on my shoulders, back and legs, my pampering began. The pressure was perfect – firm, strong strokes that truly made me feel like all the stress was being wiped from the body. After discovering a knot in my shoulder the pressure increased as it was kneaded out – it didn’t hurt and felt so satisfying once it had gone. By the end of the massage I felt as light as a feather and utterly chilled. My skin also felt smooth and supple from the gorgeous Elemis massage oil – I can’t wait to go back and have one again!
