Blog: HELEN SHER – SKIN PSYCHOLOGIST AND FOUNDER OF THE SHER SYSTEM – SHARES SOME ANTI-AGEING TIPS (25.03.11)
Water regulates our temperature, keeps mucus membranes moist and our joints lubricated. But its most visible effect is on your complexion. If your skin is not sufficiently hydrated from the inside, it will be dry, dull, flaky, prone to spots and fine lines and this will be exaggerated by exercising and exposure to the environment. Drink plenty of water and avoid drinks containing alcohol or caffeine. Dehydration, cramps, exhaustion or heat stroke can also result from not drinking enough fluids.”
My top tips for keeping your complexion youthful as you get older:
1. Daily Sher Water Therapy
Every morning and evening, fill your basin with warm water and wash your face with a soapless cleanser. Rinse thoroughly by gently splashing the water onto your face around 20 times. This step is very important as it loosens the dead skin cells and hydrates the skin. Pat your face dry and immediately apply Multi-Action Serum (£41.00 for 30ml – www.sher.co.uk) to help seal in moisture and provide essential nutrients for skin. Alternatively, if you are prone to breakouts, spritz with Colloidal Silver spray (£12.50 for 50ml). This liquid is used externally and is a natural anti-bacterial and anti-biotic which will benefit the skin gently and effectively, without harmful side effects. The spray works quickly and effectively to calm spots, soothe redness and reduce inflammation. Colloidal Silver Spray is refreshing and will create a fine layer on the skin before applying your moisturiser to seal in moisture and provide protection.
2. Take supplements for your skin
Beauty supplements are fairly new, but the sector is developing rapidly. Our body cannot produce the necessary amounts of the vital vitamins, minerals, trace elements and amino acids that it needs. These beneficial nutrients are obtained through diet as well as through supplements. The food we eat today is often poorer in nutrients, due to intensive farming and processing, it is practically essential to complement our diet by taking nutritional supplements (Sher Skin Support Formula £28.50 for 90 capsules). The skin is the last organ to benefit from nutrients too – the body considering the vital internal organs more important to distribute available nutrients to. During certain specific situations and periods of life the body has an increased need for vitamins and other essential nutrients such as, for example, during times of stress, during the menopause and for smokers.
3. Protect from sun damage
Free radicals created by UV exposure break down collagen and destroy cell nutrients – creating fine lines and wrinkles. Protect the skin from these free radicals by using a medium strength SPF and applying generously and often – especially in summer months and when exercising outdoors. Use a skincare that contains antioxidants and nourishing ingredients that will also counteract free radical damage and protect skin.
4. Avoid stress and exercise regularly
Stress contributes to ageing as it also breaks down collagen, so make sure you take time out and change the pace of your life regularly. The best way to do this is to find an exercise you enjoy, like yoga or swimming or any other sport you enjoy playing. Even brisk walking with the dog for just 30 minutes a day will make a difference. To avoid overexposure to the sun wear SPFs, keep hydrated by drinking plain., still water and choose early morning or evening when the air is coolest.

Tried & Tested: HAND WASH & LOTION DUOS (25.03.11)
Add a touch of indulgence to everyday hygiene by treating yourself to our pick of hand wash and lotion duos.

ELEMIS EXOTIC LIME & GINGER HAND & BODY WASH AND HAND & BODY LOTION, £18.40 and £24.60, both 300ml (www.timetospa.co.uk)
What they say: This luxurious daily collection contains eco-friendly ingredients and advanced formulations leaving the skin refreshing clean, beautifully nourished and exotically scented.
The Results: I work long hours, so I’m always looking to add a little pampering to my daily routine – so I was looking forward to trying this duo. I was surprised at how fresh the wash and lotion smelt - the inclusion of ginger had made me think they would be warm and spicy, but I could happily use these year round. The wash lathered beautifully, but I was the most impressed with the texture of the lotion - incredibly nourishing, yet quickly absorbed. The light, fresh fragrance lingered on my hands. Although at the more expensive end of the scale, a little goes a long way, so I think these would last for some time. They are certainly luxurious to use.
Best for: Luxury

CIATE SICILIAN LEMON AND CREAM FINE HAND WASH AND ENRICHING HAND CREAM GIFT SET, £20 for both (www.ciate.co.uk)
What they say: Specially formulated by ex-manicurist Charlotte Straughan, Ciate’s Fine Hand Wash and Hand Cream duos are fabulously fruity and deeply nourishing.
The Results: I’ve used Ciate nail polishes in the past, but wasn’t aware that the company also sold handcare products. I was pleasantly surprised to discover this! The plastic bottles look chic and I was delighted with the presentation of the set, which would make a lovely gift. Although described as fruity, both items in the duo have an incredible scent of baked lemon treats - sadly it doesn’t linger for long but having said that, I’d probably be constantly hungry if it did! The cream has quite a runny consistency, more akin to a lotion, so I found myself having to be careful not to waste any when dispensing from the pump bottle - however, it means that it’s easily absorbed.
Best for: The sweet, indulgent scent

JO MALONE LIME, BASIL & MANDARIN BODY & HAND WASH AND BODY & HAND LOTION, £30 and £38, both 250ml (www.jomalone.co.uk)
What they say: Enjoy a refreshing cleanse with a hand wash that lightly scents the skin with the aroma of lime wrapped in aromatic herbs and sensual woods. Like liquid silk on your skin, Jo Malone’s body & hand lotions are light in texture and luxurious in fragrance. Readily absorbed, they moisturise beautifully, leaving your skin dewy and delicately scented. Perfect worn solo or as a base for fragrance layering.
The Results: I wear Jo Malone’s signature Lime, Basil & Mandarin Cologne every day, so I knew I’d like the citrus scent of the wash and lotion just as much. I loved the sleek appearance of the square bottles, which fit perfectly with my personal minimalist styling. The initial scent is quite subtle, with citrus being the most prominent. The wash left my hands feeling tingly clean and the hand cream was a silky smooth accompaniment. I was impressed at how long the fragrance lingered after application - not something I usually experience with lotions, but I think this is testament to the quality of the products and the fragrance knowledge behind them.
Best for: Perfume fans

MOLTON BROWN WHITE MULBERRY FINE LIQUID HAND WASH AND SOOTHING HAND LOTION, both £15 for 300ml (www.moltonbrown.co.uk)
What they say: White Mulberry and pure essential oils work to moisturise your hands and help to prevent the signs of ageing. The hand lotion is infused with Provencal mimosa, elemi and green tea to leave your hands with a luxurious crisp aroma. Extracts of the White Mulberry Tree root help to reduce the signs of ageing.
The Results: I live alone, but regularly have friends round for drinks or supper so I like to keep my apartment guest friendly. I’ve always admired the Molton Brown hand wash and lotions, but they were a little out of my price range. As I expected, they looked wonderful in my bathroom and became a point of comment when my friends were visiting, all suitably impressed that I had such luxurious toiletries to share! It turns out that quite a few of them had wanted to try the products and, like me, were instantly converted. I know that there are quite a few fragrances to choose from, but I really liked the fresh scent of the wash and lotion. It’s like cut grass and is something that I think would appeal to most people.
Best for: Impressing guests

NEAL’S YARD REMEDIES GARDEN MINT & BERGAMOT HAND WASH AND HAND LOTION, £11.65 and £12, both 200ml (www.nealsyardremedies.com)
What they say: A gentle, organic hand wash fragranced with the clean, green scent of freshly picked Garden Mint and zesty Sicilian Bergamot. The luxurious organic lotion is enriched with nourishing shea nut butter, jojoba and evening primrose oils.
The Results: Although I’m not strict, I like to use organic or natural products where possible, so I was pleased to be handed this duo to test. I put the bottles by my kitchen sink and the scent proved effective in dispensing with nasty cooking odours. The wash has a fresh, natural scent, which is perfect for this time of year. It’s one of the most softening hand washes I have ever tried. I adored the scent of the lotion, which is like freshly picked sweet mint. It was hydrating, without being greasy, so that I could continue with my chores. I feel that the price of the products is fair, as it reflects the quality. I’d certainly consider repurchasing these.
Best for: Organic choice

TESCO NATURAL EXTRACTS VINTAGE ROSE HAND WASH AND HAND & BODY LOTION, both £2.50 for 250ml (www.tesco.com)
What they say: The gentle, cleansing hand wash and moisturising hand & body lotion contain natural extract of rose flower to help leave your skin feeling soft, smooth and delicately scented.
The Results: The vintage-inspired design on the label is well considered – the packaging looks as though it has come from a quirky, niche brand not a supermarket shelf. And I really liked the delicate rose fragrance – it’s surprisingly fresh and not overly floral, which keeps it modern. The glycerine-based wash lathers well - and although I could feel some residue after applying the lotion, it’s not at all greasy. I’m absolutely gobsmacked at the bargain price of the duo – I would be prepared to pay more than double, but I do like that it offers an element of luxury even if you’re on a budget. I’m even looking forward to my next grocery shop in the hope of discovery more beauty bargains!
Best for: Budget friendly choice

Treatment: COLOUR GLOSS SOAK-OFF GEL MANICURE, SALONS NATIONWIDE (25.03.11)
What it promises: Say goodbye to chipped nails – as celebrity manicurist Tom Bachik has launched new Colour Gloss Soak-off Gel Polish, which finally makes the dream of the perfect, long-lasting manicure a reality. Tom has tended the fingertips of A-Listers including Victoria Beckham, J-Lo, Cameron Diaz and Beyoncé – so clearly knows a thing or two about perfect, glossy talons. Drawing on that expertise, the advanced soak-off gel polish is available in 38 beautiful colours – from classic hues to on-trend brights. Lasting for up to 21 days, the gel soaks off quickly and completely, with no damage to the natural nail.
What happens: This treatment is available nationwide, but I chose to visit Aldo Coppola in London’s fashionable Kensington. The interior is cool and quirky - highlights include a striking reception desk and red quartz coffee table designed by acclaimed designer Brodie Neill, colour-changing lights in the hair washing area, and chairs designed by Phillippe Stark. I settled down at the long nail station, running through the centre of the salon, and was asked to pick from an impressive range of gel shades. I was tempted by the sparkly pink – but fearing I’d be bored of it after a few days, I opted instead for a neutral nude. The manicure itself was pretty classic – tidying cuticles, filing, and shaping nails. When it came to the colour, however, I was asked to place hands underneath a warm lamp after each application. Nails were dry in super-quick time (as little as 30 seconds) – which was a refreshing change to those manicures I’ve managed to smudge on the way home…
The Results: Besides the quick drying time, I didn’t notice a huge difference initially. It looked like a super-glossy manicure and nobody would have guessed it was gel. After a few days though, the difference was obvious – there wasn’t a single chip and my manicure looked as perfect as when I stepped out of the doors of the salon. The 21-day promise was about right for me – and I returned to the salon to have it soaked off (quick and painless, with my nails in great condition underneath). I’ve tried gel manicures before that have lasted slightly longer – but the choice of colours isn’t as extensive nor the price as affordable. I would definitely pick this over a regular manicure and would really recommend it.
Price: From £25 for a full set.
Location: Salons Nationwide. Call 0844 8009396 or visit www.louellabelle.co.uk for nearest location.

Editor’s Letter (25.03.11)
Halleluiah, there are just days until the clocks finally spring an hour forward. It’s got to be one of the best days of the year – although, I must admit that I didn’t necessarily agree with that when I was working a Sunday job as a teenager. These days, however, the pain of a shorter lie-in is well worth it. I love the lighter evenings – it makes me think ahead to those promising days of summer, when we can look forward to long afternoons sat in pub gardens and sipping pimms in the garden at home (I know, I know – all my favourite things revolve around alcohol, but it’s a welcome change to a heavy class of rioja whilst curled under a blanket on the sofa)… And the beauty routine? The clock change is the perfect time to start preparing for summer. Pedicures, hair removal, fruity body products, lighter bases, and a touch of faux sunkissed glow… I can’t wait to get going!

Elemis. Regular readers will know that I’m a big fan of the spa brand Elemis – and their Safarai Traveller (£79) collaboration with Alice Temperley is their best yet. So good, in fact, that I hear the beauty industry has been squabbling to get their hands on the few samples available. I wasn’t one of the lucky ones – but the picture alone is enough to convince me to part with my cash. And the fact that every sale raises funds for charity Mothers4Children is the icing on the cake (£1.50 per sale). It contains eight of Elemis’ most popular products in minature form – perfect for summer holidays. www.timetospa.co.uk

Clinique. Clinique’s new Moisture Surge Tinted Moisturiser SPF15 (£21) has just hit shelves. The lightweight gel-cream combines all-day hydration with a splash of colour. I can rarely wear tinted moisturiser, as I have paler-than-pale skin – so I passed this onto a friend who was very eager to test on my behalf. She loved it, reporting that she only needed a tiny amount to cover her whole complexion – and was rewarded with glowing, soft, flawless skin. Top marks! Available now at Selfridges and Brown Thomas now. Available at Clinique counters nationwide from 22nd April.

MONU. I was lucky enough to be invited to test a MONU Deep Tissue Body Massage last week (review to follow on the site soon). Afterwards, I was sent a few products from the range to try. My favourite was RENU Relaxing Face Mask (£29.50), from their anti-ageing range. It isn’t aimed specifically at my skin (I’m 30 and this is aimed at mature skin), but with a dry, sensitive complexion, I realised it could still do great things – and I wasn’t wrong. The gel formula was cooling and soothing – and afterwards, my skin was impressively plumped, smooth, and balanced. Love it. www.monushop.co.uk

Umberto Giannini. With summer on its way, there’s even more reason to start infusing hair with much-needed moisture (especially if you battle with frizz when humidity rises). One of my favourite ways to pamper locks is with a hair masque – and Umberto Giannini’s Spa Rituals Moisture Replenishing Mask (£5.61) is absolutely perfect for the job. It contains Florentine Orris Milk and Shea Butters to smooth the hair cuticle, add strength, and heal split ends. I’m stocking up for the season ahead. www.boots.com

Sophie Feels Better. It’s not often that I plug a blog in my Editor’s Letter, but I urge you to visit the amazing ‘Sophie Feels Better’ (click here to visit). It is written by Sophie Beresiner, the Beauty Editor of LOOK Magazine, who is currently fighting Breast Cancer at the age of 31. The blog discusses her battle to look good when she feels quite the opposite. It’s not an area of cancer treatment that often gets discussed – but as Sophie so eloquently put it, “looking good can make you feel good.’ I’ve never met Sophie, but I am totally addicted to visiting her blog – and I hope she feels better very, very soon. http://sophiefeelsbetter.blogspot.com/

Breaking News: BAREMINERALS LAUNCH SKINCARE RANGE IN APRIL (18.03.11)
We’re big fans of mineral makeup brand bareMinerals here at The-Beauty-Pages.com – so when we heard that the brand had launched a skincare collection, our ears instantly pricked up…
Leslie Blodgett, Creator of bareMinerals explains: “Once upon a time, we had an amazing idea. A belief that a foundation could actually be good for you and could change the way women felt about their skin. We asked women to put aside assumptions and conventional thinking and try and radical new product that might just cause a revolution. Here we go again… Introducing bareMinerals Skincare. A transformative new way of caring for your skin that’s simple, super-effective, and incredibly easy to use.”
So what’s special about it? Every formula in the bareMinerals Skincare line is powered by 100% pure RareMinerals ActiveSoil Complex. The products are proven to deliver faster cell turnover, visibly smaller pores, increased luminosity and softer, smoother, younger-looking skin.
Included in the range is: Purifying Facial Cleanser (£15), Deep Cleansing Foam (£15), Purely Nourishing Moisturiser (£27), Purely Nourishing Cream (£27), Firming Eye Treatment (£23), and Pure Transformation Night Treatment (£45).
The standout product is the latter; Pure Transformation Night Treatment, which promotes a brighter, more even skin tone, with improved texture. It takes some getting used to applying the powder, which is applied on a brush like the brand’s foundation as the last step of the skincare routine at night – but it really works. We noticed brighter, healthier-looking skin after just one application.
The range is on counter April 2011. It will be available at Bare Escentuals Boutiques and Selfridges. For more details, call 0870 8506655 or visit www.bareescentuals.co.uk

Tried & Tested: HAIR OILS (18.03.11)
Hair oils are the latest trend in haircare – but are they worth the investment? We’ve put six to the test…

KERASTASE ELIXIR ULTIME BEAUTIFYING OIL, £27.85 for 125ml (www.feelunique.com)
What they say: Our first versatile beautifying treament enriched with a complex for four precious oils.' Maize, Argan, Camellia and Pracaxi oils combine to create a luxurious Elixir for all hair types. With a few drops of ELIXIR ULTIME, hair is transformed into silky, weightless matter.
The Results: This product is contained in a clear plastic bottle with gold pump applicator. I had seen the product advertised in a salon and was pleased to discover that it lived up to all the hype! The blend of oils, which has an exotic, coconut-like scent, can be used pre-shampoo, after washing as a blow-dry aid, or as a styling serum to tame frizzy strands. My hair is medium thickness and not really prone to frizz, so I decided to use it on wet hair before drying. It has a lightweight, quite runny texture, but didn’t feel at all greasy. One 20p-sized blob was enough to work through my entire head of hair. After blow-drying, my hair was beautifully soft – it actually felt like I had just given it an intensive treatment – and boasted an impressive shine. It’s worth every penny.
Best for: Multitasking

MOROCCAN OIL TREATMENT, £30.45 for 100ml (www.lookfantastic.com)
What they say: Experience the power of Moroccanoil, a revolutionary styling, finishing and conditioning product. Instantly absorbing, Moroccanoil Oil Treatment helps eliminate frizz, easily detangles your locks and provides long term conditioning for added bounce.
The Results: I was a bit worried when I was asked to test hair oil. My hair is fine and can easily be weighed down by products, so putting oil on it is quite a scary thing! So when I first used it – smoothing over wet hair and brushing through to evenly distribute – I used a tiny amount, but gradually I build up confidence to use a little more. The first thing I noticed (while I was still drying) was that my hair felt so soft and silky. I usually battle with tangles when my hair is wet, but it was like running my hands through silk. The softness was noticeable when dry too and I found my hair much easier to style, far less flyaway, and definitely shinier. I’m very, very pleased to discover it.
Best for: Fine, tangle-prone hair

AROMATHERAPY ASSOCIATES ENRICH HAIR OIL, £24 (www.aromatherapyassociates.com)
What they say: Natural plant extracts and essential oils – pure nature, nothing else added. Add gloss and shine to dry, sunstressed or out of condition hair. Restore natural health with rich murumuru butter, coconut oil and essential oils. Ylang ylang, geranium and rosemary leave hair looking and feeling smooth, sleek and revitalised.
The Results: This oil is designed to be applied to dry hair and washed out after 20 minutes, acting as an intensive treatment. It couldn’t have come at a better time, as my hair is in dreadful condition – dry and full of split ends. It’s not a quick fix, so I decided to apply it on a Friday evening when I got home from work. I instantly fell in love with the fragrance, which reminded me of a luxury spa! It did feel quite unnatural to be smoothing oil onto dry hair and is best done in a toweling robe if you have long hair (trust me on that one!) After 20 minutes enjoying the scent, I shampooed my hair as normal. After drying, my hair didn’t feel heavy or greasy at all, which was a welcome surprise. It felt softer, better hydrated, and even had a glossy shine. I really recommend it as a treat.
Best for: Pampering

DAVINES WIZARDS NO 1 FINEST OIL NON OIL, £13.80 for 250ml (www.salonskincare.co.uk)
What they say: This unique blend of selective ingredients creates a multi-benefit styling and finishing product that adds soft definition for a natural look as it conditions and protects hair. Sweet Almond Proteins moisturise hair and help eliminate the static effect.
The Results: I’ve tried a couple of different hair oils before and I’m a big fan – but my major bugbear is the price as they are never cheap. I was really pleased to discover that this bottle is larger and more affordable, so I was keeping fingers crossed that I would like it as much as those I’ve tried in the past. I have very thick hair and used to rely on serums after blow-drying – but I find oils to be even more effective, leaving my hair smoother, shinier, and easier to style. I applied this oil after washing my hair, before blow-drying. I found the texture of this oil a little thicker, but it still wasn’t greasy and absorbed quickly. The major benefit of this product is its ability to control frizz – it made a big difference and I will be relying on it as summer approaches!
Best for: Taming frizz

AVEDA BEAUTIFYING COMPOSITION, £18.50 for 50ml (www.aveda.co.uk)
What they say: Helps seal in moisture after bathing or during massage with a rich, aromatic, conditioning body oil for dry skin, hair and scalp. Contains jojoba oil and a blend of essences, including rosemary and bergamot.
The Results: This multitasking oil can be applied directly to body, hair, or scalp – or poured into a warm bath. It’s a fairly small bottle for the price, but the delicious scent (I can definitely detect the rosemary) makes it worth the investment. The only problem with this product is that the neck of the bottle – designed to prevent the oil pouring out too quickly – makes it hard and time consuming to gather enough oil in the palm of your hand to smooth through hair or massage into scalp. When you’ve managed it, the oil itself has quite a dry feel, rather than greasy – so it isn’t at all messy to apply. After 10 minutes, I washed the oil out of my hair and was rewarded for my efforts with hair that boasted a really lovely shine. It felt slightly softer, although it wasn’t dramatic, but sadly the fabulous scent didn’t transfer to hair (perhaps because my shampoo has quite a strong scent).
Best for: Boosting shine

VO5 HOT OIL DEEP NOURISHING, £2.71 for 4 x 15ml (www.boots.com)
What they say: VO5 understands you want your hair to look its best and so you use heat appliances, brush frequently and maybe colour your hair. To counteract the damage this may cause, VO5 Hot Oil Deep Nourishing uses the power of heat and penetrates deeply within the hair.
The Results: It’s been years since I tried V05 Hot Oil, as it was a cult product when I was a teenager. I had long hair then and remember it giving it a lovely shine. These days I have short hair (and two children!), so I want beauty products that are quick and easy to use, yet still offer a pampering experience. The instructions said to either warm the tubes in a mug of hot water or drop into the bath – the easier by far is the latter, so that’s what I did! I then opened the tube (easier than it looks) and smoothed the contents over my hair, leaving it to work its magic for one minute before washing hair as usual. It noticed my hair felt softer immediately, but I must admit that I struggled to see the difference when my hair was dry. I expect I’d notice more of a change if I still had longer hair – and I have no doubts that it did brilliant things to all those split ends!
Best for: Budget buy

Feature: PRETTY PLEASE (18.03.11)
We all want our beauty products to work – but isn’t it great when they come in adorable packaging too? This week, we’ve rounded up the skincare and makeup buys that you won’t be hiding in the bathroom cabinet…

GLAM
Add some glamour to your handbag or give your dressing table a boudoir feel with some sexy-looking products. Go for old-style Hollywood or modern-day bling...
Ciaté has got to be the prettiest nail range ever… With fabulous black bows on all the polishes, it feels glamorous just painting your toenails. They’ve even made polish remover look divine and smell amazing... Ciaté White Chocolate Gentle and Nourishing Nail Polish Remover, £14 (www.beautybay.com) is a luxurious, highly efficient nail varnish cleaner. With a gentle, non-drying formula, it’s enriched with vitamin B5 and Vitamin E to nourish whilst quickly and effortlessly removing even the most stubborn of nail polishes. Once dried, it leaves behind a wonderful white chocolate scent, making removing your nail varnish seem a bit less of a chore. Plus, the bottle will look gorgeous in any bathroom.
Now you can show off your fashion credentials with your mascara too: Accessorize Rock Star Volumising Mascara, £5.00 (www.accessorize.com) boasts a glitzy-looking case with a floral design on a gold background. One to pull out on the bus for some admiring glances. Or flash your La-Tweez Pro Illuminating Tweezers £15.00 (www.houseoffraser.co.uk). Choose from black, fuchsia and white, and make sure you show off the sparkly crystal button – and your well-groomed brows.

RETRO
Step back in time and create a traditional feel in your bathroom with these gorgeously old-fashioned bottles and jars. Palmolive Authentic Handwash, £1.99 (www.sainsburys.co.uk) is an affordable way to add a vintage look to your home. The hand soaps are made from natural plant extracts and aromatic fragrances and come in two delicious varieties: Lavender & Chamomile and Bergamot & Verbena. Both leave hands silky soft and smelling gorgeous.
Paul & Joe Moisture Cream, £24 (www.beautybay.com) is one for the guest room. A highly moisturising cream that plumps skin from inside, imparting a feeling of firmness. Paul & Joe have used two highly penetrating oils; jojoba oil, creating a satiny texture, and moisture-loaded meadow foam oil. The jar is just as fabulous as the contents: an ornate, Art Deco style lid and smooth curvy lines.
Another luxe-looking retro range that comes without the hefty price tag is Marks & Spencer new La Maison de Senteurs collection. Inspired by southern France, the glass bottles and metal lids give it a ‘house in the country’ feel. Try the La Turquoise Fragrance Bath Cream, £7 (www.marksandspencer.com) - a rich bath cream that leaves skin feeling cleansed, soothed and gently perfumed with the fresh scent of lemon and a floral bouquet.

NATURAL
If you like your carbon footprint to be small and your organic vegetable box to be big, then you’ll love all the gorgeous natural ranges out there. And they come in packaging that makes them even more desirable...
My One Green Bottle is such a treat. The formulations are divine and the range just looks so good on the bathroom shelf. Deep emerald colour glass and silvery screw tops give it a simple but natural look. Highly recommended comes the Berry Beautiful Daily Moisturiser, £28 (www.myonegreenbottle.co.uk) - a light moisturiser created from rosehip, raspberry and blackcurrant seed oils. The addition of sea buckthorn, carrot oil, as well as vitamins E and A, create a powerful regenerating, strengthening and nourishing blend. Check out the gift boxes in the range too, which come with beautiful matching green ribbon.
Just four years old, The Sedbergh Soap Company was founded by a lady called Dorthe who had moved to the country and was frustrated at not being able to find products gentle and pure enough for her eczema-prone skin. So she started making them herself from essential oils, and herbs and plants grown on her farm. The company was pretty much an overnight success, due to their gorgeous products – but also the lovely packaging they come in. The Lavender Bath Soak, £13.50 (www.sedbergh-soap.co.uk) comes in a dinky little box with a tag: a perfect gift.

EXOTIC
Recreate far-flung spa destinations back here in rainy Blighty by choosing some of these exotic looking delights.
MOR was created by Australian designers Dianna Burmas and Deon St. Mor. Motivated by a desire to develop beautiful products, the two joined forces in 1998, and the MOR brand is now recognised globally for its range of luxurious products and stunning packaging. Try their hero product, Lip Delight, £10.50 (www.houseoffraser.co.uk), brightly coloured tins filled with luscious glosses, and a design inspired by Bollywood nights.
Senspa products have a gorgeous ‘spa-at-home’ feel to them, and the brand use only natural, chemical-free and effective ingredients. The Invigorating Body Polish, £22.95 (www.senspashop.co.uk) comes in a fabulous jar and is a superb body polishing treatment using freshly ground, Himalayan rock crystal salt to exfoliate, remineralise and energise the body. Cold pressed, organic jojoba oil and essential oils nourish and smooth the skin revealing a radiant, healthy glow.
Elemental Herbology really know how to make you – and your bathroom shelf – look good. Their stunning packaging design is shown to its best advantage on some of the beautiful glass bottles in the range. Try the Botanical Body Repair, £33 (www.spacenk.co.uk), a luxurious botanical body oil to help soften, hydrate and nourish from top to toe, leaving skin silky smooth.

MINIMALIST
Some people like it fancy, some like it minimal. And for fans of clean, crisp lines, here are some product ranges that keep it simple.
RMK is the number one selling cosmetics brand in Japan and was launched in 1997 by former makeup artist for Vogue, Rumiko. Created to reflect the inner beauty of all women, RMK is filled with breakthrough formulations, easy to use textures and genuine beauty innovations. It really pulls off the ‘simple yet gorgeous’ look with style. Try the cult Cleansing Oil, £22 (www.beautybay.com).
After failing to find any products on the Australian market that met their strict ingredients criteria and performance expectations, two friends created Inika – a stylish, and exclusively natural range of makeup products that offered unsurpassed performance. The packaging is sleek, stylish and black. Why not add some minimalist style to your makeup bag with one of their brushes, such as the Kabuki Brush, £23.48 (www.inikacosmetics.co.uk)?
Also worth investigating is the Alcina Effective Care range which comes in luxurious gold packaging – and offers exclusive formulas and highly concentrated ingredients to relieve skin‘s deficiencies and support its natural balance. Try the Moisture Serum, £30.10 (www.alcina.co.uk), which provides intensive moisture, for visibly firmer skin.

COOL
What better way to show how on-trend you are than by adding some funky products on your dressing table? Whether you like it cute, edgy or with a Japanese twist, there’s something out there for the street-wise amongst you.
Formulated to ‘leave you feeling like royalty every day’, Kings & Queens is a super-indulgent, natural body care range that harnesses the beauty and wellbeing benefits of herbs and spices, favoured by the aristocracy of a bygone era. The packaging is super-cool – enough to make any shower room look like a boutique hotel. Go for the Queen Isabella Cinnamon Orange, £5 (www.bathandunwind.com), which comes in a vibrant red bottle.
If you like your bath products good enough to eat, experiment with the I Love... range. The pastel packaging is very cute and the smells are just irresistible. The delectable Strawberries & Milkshake Body Butter is just £2.03 (www.superdrug.com). And if you’re just too cool for school, play it Gwen Stefani style with the Harajuku Lovers fragrance Sunshine Cuties Love, £9.99 (www.thefragranceshop.co.uk). With a perfume like this you wouldn’t need anything else on your dressing table. It’s more like art then just a fragrance! And it smells pretty nice too.

Treatment Review: FISH PEDICURE TREATMENT, MALIKA SALON, ONE NEW CHANGE LONDON (18.03.11)
What it promises: The pedicure uses Garra Rufa fish – otherwise known as doctor fish - to remove dead skin leaving your feet smooth and revitalised. The toothless fish use a sucking motion to painlessly lift away dead skin without damaging the new healthy cells underneath. Originating in Kangal Turkey, the fish have been painlessly smoothing the feet of bathers in the local hot springs for centuries. One of the added benefits is that the fish secrete a special enzyme diathanol, which is believed to improve skin regeneration and the treatment is also supposed to be very effective in treating skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema.
What happens: I visited the slick but small Malika One New Change salon in the city. The salon boasts just handful of large leather chairs – mostly used for eyebrow threading, which the salon is famed for – as well as four state-of-the-art pools containing the Garra Rufa fish. These are filtered and fed by a constant oxygen supply to ensure the water is clean water and healthy environment for the fish and is sterilised using ultra-violet lights to ensure it is safe to use. When I arrived my feet were washed in a basin before I perched on the leather seat next to the pool and swung my feet into the basin. The fish rush to your feet and it has the sensation of champagne bubbles all around – if anything it is ticklish rather than painful. If you don’t look down, the only time you are really aware that it is little creatures feeding on your feet is when they get between your toes and you are conscious not to squash them.
The Results: This is a fantastic refresher treatment to have in your lunch hour. You can sit for half an hour with a magazine and a cup of green tea while your feet are gently soothed and smoothed. There is no painting with the pedicure, but that means you can put your tights and boots on straight after – and compared to the average pedicure in central London, it is great value for money. You need to have several treatments to really see the benefits, but my feet were noticeably smoother and the fish managed to remove skin that no pedicure could ever reach.
Price: £38 for 40 minutes
Location: Malika One New Change, 36 Lower New Change Passage, London EC4M 9AF 020 7236 4008. www.malika.co.uk

Blog: LOUISE WOOD – OWNER OF THE HAIR ADVICE CENTRE IN ENGLEFIELD GREEN – SHOWS US HOW TO CHOOSE A HAIRDO TO SUIT YOUR FACE SHAPE (18.03.11)
There’s no denying that we turn to celebs or magazines for inspiration when we want to spice up our hair, but the undeniable truth is not all tresses suit everyone! However, there are some simple steps you can follow to find out your face shape, which will help you choose styles that’ll compliment your looks and leave you and your hair looking hot!
Distinguishing Face Shape
The best way to distinguish your face shape is to smooth your hair away from your features. Pull back the hair around your face using a headband and then put your hair into a ponytail - this will allow you to really see your bone and face structure.
Angular Face Shape
An angular face shape is distinguished by a strong, defined jaw line. If you fall in this category, you should avoid haircuts that are too structured or have sharp lines, instead opt for soft textured looks that will soften the face and keep the length longer than the jaw. Jennifer Aniston is a great example of how long softly layered hair works really well to detract from a stronger shape or Olivia Palermo whose length compliments her angular jaw with feminine softness perfectly!
Oval Face Shape
Oval face shapes have a slightly elongated jaw and the forehead is wider than the chin. If your features are small and elfin, stick to pixie cuts as in this case hair that's too long just ends up taking over your features leaving you looking drawn, think Halle Berry whose hair compliments her beautifully. Avoid too much length around the face as this can make it look longer, instead keep your strands soft and choppy to frame and shorten your features - but lucky ovals can pull off most haircuts!
Round/Heart Face Shapes
A round face shape will mean you have a rounder jaw line and hairline, whereas a heart face is wider at the forehead with a narrower chin, however both suit the same style cuts. Although it’s often thought that it doesn’t work, these shapes can also wear shorter haircuts - check out Ginnifer Goodwin or Judi Dench’s pixie crops, which looks fabulous and they have round/heart shapes. You should avoid chin length bobs or too heavy fringes as this will enhance the roundness; alternatively, if you prefer lengthier locks, the hair should sit longer than the jawline to elongate the face
Square Face Shape
Marcia Cross is an example of a square face shape as her hairline and jaw are strongly defined and resemble a ‘square’ hence the name! Long locks will work beautifully and I would recommend keeping the style soft adding a long sweeping fringe, if you also have a high forehead like Marcia.
So, when you want a ‘do that’s bound to flatter, find your face shape, then follow the guideline styles above and look forward to locks you’ll love!

Editor’s Letter (18.03.11)
This week, I have been rocking a bright, neon pink pout. It’s my nod to the Spring/Summer 2011 Catwalks, where Diane Von Furstenburg, Fendi, and Sonia Rykiel (to name just a few) sent models down the runway with brilliantly bright lips. I’ve never been a lipstick girl, but do you know what? I’m suddenly addicted. I love the way a slick of lippie can transform an otherwise natural look into something modern and trend-driven. One word of warning though, the other makeup really does have to be natural – a little mascara on the tip of lashes and a very natural base (even just powder, if you bear it) is enough. And to stop that lipstick fading when you talk or eat – always the worry with the brightest hues – apply Lipcote on top to seal it (£3.45, Boots Nationwide). Happy pouting!

Ila. I’ve been testing Ila Spa Skincare’s Glowing Radiance range this week – and I wholeheartedly recommend it. The scents and formulations are utterly indulgent, yet the range has a serious side too, offering some impressive results. My favourite from the range is the Face Oil for Glowing Radiance (£56.40), which contains Damescena Rose Otto oil to regenerate and nourish skin’s cells and promote skin radiance. And let me tell you, it really works… My skin currently looks like I’ve being enjoying a week of long lie-ins. I also love the Body Cream (£51.07) and Bath Oil (£45.96) – both heavenly. www.ila-spa.com/

Lanolips. My lips are always dry and cracked – I can’t even remember a time when they weren’t – so a product that promises to keep them hydrated will instantly grab my attention. I’ve being hearing a lot of good things about Lanolips Lip Ointment (£8.16) over the last few months, and last week I finally got to try it. The creamy texture soothes lips, whilst the colour (I tried new launch Rhubarb) adds a dash of colour for the days when I’m going lipstick free. It’s not cheap, but I am seriously impressed by how long the feeling of soft and suppleness lasts. www.victoriahealth.com

XEN-TAN. If you use fake tan, you will know that smooth, hydrated skin is essential for an even application. You’ll also know that fake tan has a habit of smelling a little unpleasant – I personally liken it to the scent of soggy biscuits. So a product that combines hydration with the masking of that horrible smell would be a winner, right? Step forward XEN-TAN’s Scent Secure Luxury Moisturiser (£24.99), which does just that – moisturising skin, whilst locking out that biscuity smell. It’s not yet available, but you can sign up for an alert when it’s available by clicking here
http://www.xen-tan.co.uk/item/Xen-Tan-Scent-Secure/59

Bamford Body. Body and haircare range Bamford Body boasts several things I love in a beauty range – it’s English, it combines science with natural ingredients, and the products are based on aromatherapy, so it’s a real pleasure to use them. I’ve been using the Shampoo and Conditioner (£16 each) this week and it’s transformed my shower into a luxury spa treatment. Invigorating notes of Geranium, Lavender and Peppermint fill the cubicle, making it ideal for early mornings – and hair and scalp is left clean, shiny, and healthy. Bamford London, 169 Draycott Avenue, London SW3 3AJ

Saicara. If you’re looking ahead to summer (and who isn’t?), Saicara’s Heavenly Care’s Body Fizzy Gel (£8.45) is a fun, but effective addition to your bathroom shelf. The fast absorbing, cracking ice foam cools and refreshes skin, whilst boasting a delicately floral scent. I sprayed it onto my feet after a long day pounding the pavements in London and it instantly cooled and soothed. I can imagine what a relief it would be on the hottest days of summer. A little goes a long way, so it’s really good value for money. www.saicara.co.uk

Blog: ROS SIMMONS – CEO OF VIE AT HOME – EXPLAINS HOW A LIPSTICK CHANGED HER LIFE… (11.03.11)
In 1997 an opportunity came along that I couldn’t resist. To be part of a new business selling makeup and skincare to women in their homes … Yes, a little bit like a Tupperware Party, but much more glamorous.
13 years later, VIE at home is one of the largest UK Party Plan companies, with over 8500 Consultants regularly hosting Makeup Parties. The agenda? Makeup advice, skincare tip, mini makeovers, and facials … What more could a girl want?
What makes VIE at home different?
The products: We have an in house product development team who research the latest makeup and skincare trends to see what our customers would love. They then source the best possible ingredients in the world to make it.
So, for example, in 2009, we felt it was time to introduce a makeup primer. We knew there was competition in the marketplace, but we knew we could come up with our own spin on the trend. Our Prime Time Face Primer was introduced in the spring of 2009 and was an overnight success, selling out within just a few days, exceeding our expectations. Fortunately we managed to get stock of the primer back in very quickly and it continues to be a bestseller today. A firm favourite in my makeup bag (it also meant I got to chuck away a competitor product that just wasn’t doing it for me!)
The people: The most exciting thing about VIE at home for me, is the opportunities we give women all over the UK – different backgrounds, different life experiences, different expectations of what they can achieve. We hold regular meetings around the country and all meet up twice a year to celebrate their successes and it’s really inspiring for me to see how VIE at home has made a difference to their lives.
The place: We get invited into women’s homes all over the UK on a daily basis. There’s not many other companies out there who gain the same kind of trust. We also sell online at www.vieathome.com to continue to give our Customers 24-7 shopping.
In these financially challenging times, the makeup industry is booming. Not only does VIE at home supply women with the little luxuries they just can’t live without, we’re also offering women a way to supplement their income and make money from makeup
If you fancy joining us, we’re looking for women like you… To find out more go to www.vieathome.com and come and join our party.

Tried & Tested: WARMING FACE MASKS (11.03.11)
Warm your complexion with a deep-cleansing, self-warming face mask.

VIE SKIN SPARKLE KIT, £15.50 (www.vieathome.com)

What they say: For skin that looks more radiant, smoother and brighter, reach for this two step kit. Designed to offer deep down exfoliation, remove dead dulling skin cells and then apply serum, it's the secret to sparkling skin.
The Results: The packaging is luxurious and smart - and you get not one, but two products to use. There’s a cleanse, along with a mask to apply over it that tingles when applied – not in an uncomfortable way, but it feels like it must be working! I have quite sensitive skin, so I’m always nervous about using face masks. However, I thought this product worked really well and I liked the smell and feel of it. My face wasn’t left red or irritated, but felt very clean. The only drawback for me would be that it requires two tubes, but that’s because I’m pretty low-maintenance. Results-wise, however, this is a great product and I will definitely use it again.
Best for: Facial at home

SKIN WISDOM THERMAL FACE MASK, £1 (0800 505 555)
What they say: This deep-cleansing warming treatment, created by facialist Bharti Vyas, is based on rose clay and sweet almond oil, with green tea and soothing camomile.
The Results: I wasn’t overwhelmed by the packaging, but as it was a sachet and only cost £1, I wasn’t going to complain! I was impressed with the results for the low price though... It has a creamy texture that was easy to apply and didn't have a distinctive smell. I liked the warming sensation and I left it on for the required time without it feeling uncomfortable. It was easy to wash off (I have found some clay masks leave bits around your nose and brows) and my skin felt soft and fresh and looked much cleaner the next day. I would buy this product again and I could easily get two applications out of the sachet, making it 50p a treatment – not bad at all!
Best for: Budget buy

DERMALOGICA MULTIVITAMIN THERMAFOLIANT, £40.50 (www.hayleylloydwilkins.co.uk)
What they say: Multivitamin Thermafoliant combines advanced ingredient technology with powerful chemical and mechanical exfoliants to smooth and refine skin. A unique self-heating technology activates upon contact with skin or water to help facilitate penetration of multivitamin actives into skin. After just one use, skin is noticeably smoother with improved texture.
The Results: I liked the ‘clinical’ style of packaging – it looks like this product means business! The creamy mask has a nice smooth texture and is pretty much perfume free. It goes on very easily and feels pleasant and cooling on the skin. It doesn’t dry to a powder like so many face masks, but stays creamy. After washing it off, my skin was left feeling very moisturised and smooth. My makeup went on very smoothly and I found that my skin remained very well moisturised and silky for as long as 24 hours afterwards! Even after cleansing, there was a slightly oily feeling to my face that was excellent for my older, drier skin. I really like the product and would definitely use it again.
Best for: Age-busting

MONTAGNE JEUNESSE SENSUOUS SPICE CINNAMON & GINGER SELF WARMING MASQUE, £5.10 (www.montagnejeunesse.com)
What they say: Soothing & smoothing Sensuous Spice masque with exotic extracts of Cinnamon, Patchouli, Olive and Frankincense gently warms open pores to leave skin deep cleansed & radiant. Up to 10 applications!
The Results: I wasn’t that keen on the style of packaging, but I really liked the toffee-cinnamon smell of the masque. The texture was very smooth and easy to apply. The mask heated up as you put it on, but maybe slightly too much! I’d be concerned if I had sensitive skin, but thankfully I don’t - and the masque left my skin feeling clean and fresh. In general, I was pleased. It lived up to its promises and at the price of £5.10 with 10 applications, I think it’s a good value product.
Best for: Winter warming

CLIENTELE ELASTOLOGY THERMAL PUMPKIN SKIN FACIAL SCRUB, £28.09 in a duo kit with Pumpkin Peptide Regeneration Cream (www.screenglam.com)
What they say: Delight your senses and rejuvenate your complexion! This delicious blend of pumpkin enzymes, honey, apple, and cinnamon contains powerful antioxidants and natural Jojoba exfoliators to smooth and protect the skin.
The Results: This product is a cross between a mask and a scrub. The packaging looks expensive, exactly like something you’d find in a French pharmacy and I really liked it. The scrub goes on easily with a delicious fruity-spicy smell, although it doesn’t look too pretty once it’s on. (Don’t answer your front door if someone knocks!) I massaged it off with warm water after a few minutes and my cheeks felt super-soft. I’m pleased to report that they didn’t feel dry afterwards either. You don’t need to use much for each application - so in spite of the price, I think the tube would last a while.
Best for: Deep cleansing

THE BODY SHOP WARMING MINERAL MASK, £8.00 (www.thebodyshop.co.uk)
What they say: This mask magically warms itself up as you smooth it on. With feel-good ginger, cinnamon oil, and kaolin clay to deep cleanse all skin types. For all skin types.
The Results: The packaging is standard of The Body Shop – nothing to write home about, but fairly classic and suitable for both men and women. This is a great product and performs better than masks I’ve tried that cost a lot more. The warming sensation is lovely and makes you feel very pampered. It doesn’t feel at all drying, which is what you might expect from some clay-based masks. I like the smell too, which is really difficult to describe, but very clean. Afterwards I had to look at myself in a mirror for two hours at the hairdressers and was proud of my smooth, silky cheeks. I will definitely use it again.
Best for: Complexion perfecting

Treatment Review: ELEMIS VISIBLE BRILLIANCE FACIAL, NATIONWIDE (11.03.11)
What it promises: Starting to notice fine lines and wrinkles? This is the facial for you… The anti-ageing face and eye treatment instantly firms, rejuvenates and plumps up the skin, whilst helping to reduce dark circles. Independent clinical trials proved that moisturisation levels of the skin increase by up to 61% and elasticity by 40% after just one treatment. As with all Elemis treatments, you can expect to feel pampered and relaxed during the facial – and rejuvenated when it’s time to hop off the bed.
What happens: This treatment is available nationwide, but I chose to visit Elemis’ luxurious Day Spa in Lancashire Court, London. I arrived at the spa and was invited to sit in a comfortable reception area to wait for my therapist. I took a few minutes to take in my surroundings – rich gold furnishings, flickering candles to instantly create a warming ambience, and vases of exotic flowers to add a splash of colour. My therapist arrived within minutes and I was invited upstairs to a private treatment room, where I undressed and pulled myself up onto the towel-covered bed. I’ve reviewed many facials in the past – and let me be honest; this treatment doesn’t throw anything new or surprising into the mix. It follows the set pattern of cleanse, tone, exfoliation, facial massage, mask, and hydration. What is innovative, however, is the range of products used – and I was content to lie back, relax, and let the therapist use her expert hands to apply those expert products. A special mention must go to the two-phase Amino Active Mask, which felt soothing and pampering – yet left my skin looking plump and impressively radiant.
The Results: I don’t have a huge number of wrinkles, but I have recently started to notice fine lines around my eyes and crepey skin on my jaw line. After finishing the treatment, my therapist handed me a mirror and asked me to examine my skin. The condition was dramatically improved. I think part of my problem is dehydration - and the products and technique had clearly plumped the skin, making it appear far younger. The lines around my eyes were less defined and my jaw line appeared firmer. Better still, the skin had a far more even tone and boasted a radiant glow. As with all facials, the effects gradually started to fade – but my complexion felt softer and appeared smoother for days afterwards. It’s also convinced me to take better care of my skin and I’ve switched to the Elemis Pro-Collagen range.
Price: £117.50 for 1 hour and 15 minutes at Elemis Day Spa. (Price varies nationwide)
Location: Nationwide – call 01278 727830 for nearest spa.
We visited Elemis Day Spa, 2-3 Lancashire Court, Mayfair, London W1S 1EX. 0870 4104210. www.elemis.com/dayspa/

Editor’s Letter (11.03.11)
Well, that was a stressful week… Predictably, the move didn’t go as smoothly as planned – and we were without water, electricity and internet connection for a frustrating few days. Things are sorted now and we love everything about the new pad – but a particular mention must go to our bathroom. Regular readers will know that I love nothing more than a wallow in a warm bath – and this tub definitely doesn’t disappoint… It’s huge and the pressure of the tap creates a blanket of fluffy bubbles. There’s even a row of shelves above it to display my products – you can imagine the trouble I had deciding which made the cut... My husband will disagree, but I think the bathroom is the most important room in the house (forget the kitchen, I rarely step through the door). What do you think? Email me at editor@the-beauty-pages.com (I will be checking my emails from the bath…)

MAC. Once in a while a collection is launched that is all about the packaging – and MAC Cosmetics’ Wonder Woman collection is the perfect example. There’s no functional reason for the bright casing and cartoon-esque branding – although, of course, the makeup inside is just as good as we’d expect from the professional-quality brand – but that doesn’t stop me wanting to own every single one of the larger than life collection. It includes: Super-sized Mineralize Skinfinish, Eye Shadow Quads, Pigment, Opulash Mascara, Lipsticks, Oversized Lipglass, Eye Liner, Nail Lacquer, Makeup Bags, and Brushes. www.maccosmetics.co.uk

Aromatherapy Associates. I’ve always been a big fan of Aromatherapy Associates Bath & Shower Oils – and this week, I’ve been using De-Stress Mind (£37) to combat the stress of moving. It does exactly what it promises, with relaxing extracts of Camomile, Petitgrain and Frankincense to ease frazzled minds within seconds of stepping into the water. It doubles up as a shaving oil, gliding the razor over skin, and leaves skin feeling beautifully silky when I step out. As an added bonus, the bathroom smells heavenly for hours afterwards. www.aromatherapyassociates.com

Nailgirls. I was excited to see that Escentual.com (one of my favourite online beauty boutiques) is now stocking Nailgirls Classic Colour Polishes (£9.95). I’m a big fan of the brand, which is run by two nail and fashion-obsessed sisters from their stylish nail spa in London’s Islington. The colours are always on-trend – I love Coral 1, Pink 7, Teal, and Gold 2. They are also impressively long-lasting, staying chip free for longer than most brands of polish – and have a lovely glossy finish. Treat yourself! www.escentual.com

UNITE. When a haircare range tells you that its celebrity fans include the Beckhams, Eva Longoria, Heidi Klum, Demi Moore, and Tyra Banks, you sit up and take notice, as they all have fabulous hair… The range is UNITE, which hails from San Diego and is run by hair guru Andrew Dale – and I’m thrilled to report that its hit UK shores. I can personally recommend the range of 30 products (from £14.75), which are free from sulphates, parabens, gluten, Sodium Chloride, DEA and MEA. www.beautique.com/brand/Unite

Feature: BEAUTY SLEEP (11.03.11)
This week is Sleep Awareness Week – so change into your pyjamas, climb under the covers, and spend some time perfecting your nocturnal beauty regime.

BEFORE BED
Experts recommend eight hours sleep every night, but as our lives become increasingly busy, this is often difficult to achieve. Even if you do aim for an early night, it can prove difficult to “switch off” from the stresses and tensions of the day. The London Sleep Centre estimates that as many as 30-40 percent of adults suffer from insomnia each year, with greater prevalence amongst women.
Creating a relaxing ambience is key, not to mention the perfect excuse for indulging in a luxury candle habit. Try Cowshed Knackered Cow Relaxing Room Candle, £30 (www.cowshedonline.com) or Crabtree & Evelyn Aromatherapy Distillations Relaxing Aromatic Candle, £20 (www.crabtree-evelyn.co.uk), both which contain lavender and are made using natural wax. The best way to enjoy candles is during a long soak in the bath, after which apply Clarins Relax Body Treatment Oil, £35.23 for 100ml (www.clarins.co.uk) to lock in moisture and encourage a restful night’s sleep.
To send you off to the land of nod, soothe senses with a calming spray. Spritz Vie At Home Sweet Dreams Pillow Mist, £9 for 125ml (www.vieathome.com) onto bed linen or check out Rituals Yin Bed & Body Mist, £12.90 for 50ml (www.uk.ritualsstore.com), a fresh yet comforting scent that can be used on textiles or skin.
You may benefit from wearing an eye mask to bed to block out light, particularly as summer approaches. The Treatment Rooms Range Eye Shade, £25 (www.thetreatmentrooms.com) is made of pure silk for luxurious lazing, whilst Anatomicals’ bestselling Nod Off Sleep Mask, £6 (www.asos.com) clearly communicates the Do Not Disturb message!

OVERNIGHT SKIN TREATMENTS
During slumber, the skin works at repairing damage, so it’s worth investing in specific overnight products to optimise the process, as Dermalogica’s Sally Penford, Education Manager at the International Dermal Institute explains: “During sleep stages the body can focus on healing, repair and regeneration. Whilst the body is awake and active, skin function focuses on protection. Protection requires a lot of different processes to take place and as such the skin cannot target its natural regeneration processes. Skin immunity is also reinforced during sleep periods, making skin more able to defend during waking hours.”
This is the time to really target those key concerns so look out for products that are specially formulated to work while you’re sleeping. If aging or pigmentation are your top skincare worries, check out Rodial Glamtox Night, £90 for 30ml (www.rodial.co.uk), which contains Retinol, proven to target these issues. Although pricey, the gel cream is a pleasure to use and the results speak for themselves, leaving skin looking refined and glowing. Also worth a look is Oskia Bedtime Beauty Boost, £74 for 50ml (www.oskiaskincare.com), which has a much richer consistency and helps to plump and condition skin. Mature skin will benefit from an occasional overnight hydrating mask such as Aromatherapy Associates Overnight Repair Mask, £46 for 50ml (www.aromatherapyassociates.com), which contains soothing rose, anti-aging frankincense and hydrating millet seed extract for an intensive, rejuvenating treatment.
If you’re happy with your day cream, there are products you can use at night to boost its effects. The bestselling Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Synchronised Recovery Complex, £39 for 30ml (www.esteelauder.co.uk) is an easily absorbed, lightweight serum that can be applied under any moisturiser to transform it into an effective night-time skin treatment. Look out for the new BareMinerals skincare line that launches in April. Going against traditional teachings, their hero product is a powder, Pure Transformation Night Treatment, £45 (at Selfridges from April), applied as the final skincare step before bed. Mineral rich, the powder doesn’t block pores but instead leaves skin tone looking balanced and illuminated.
An essential product for party girls is Guerlain Midnight Secret, £58 for 30ml (01932 233 887), specially designed as a Late Night Recovery Treatment and described as ‘sleep in a bottle’. Use this truly luxurious product before bed on nights when you expect to be starved of sleep and wake up with skin to rival Sleeping Beauty.

OVERNIGHT BODY TREATMENT
They say there’s no rest for the wicked - and if you’ve neglected your body over the winter months, you may well fall under this category. Make the move into warmer climes by letting your products do the hard work while you rest.
If the thought of bikini season scares you already, the good news is that you have plenty of time to gain back your confidence if you start a regime now. Fat Girl Sleep, £32.70 for 170g (www.blissworld.co.uk) from New York favourite Bliss Spa helps to firm up skin while you sleep - now that’s the kind of product that gets our thumbs up! Try to look past the potent scent and bright lilac colour and simply massage into wobbly bits before bed. For an extra detoxifying boost, try Bodytox Lavender Sleep Patches, £11.95 for 6 (www.victoriahealth.com), which are inspired by traditional acupuncture.
Our hands are another area that tends to be ravaged by winter. It may not be the most attractive look, but sleeping with gloved hands that have been slathered in an intensive hand cream is one of the most effective ways to recondition. Try Mavala Repairing Night Cream for Hands, £32 for 75ml (01732 459 412) – or, if you’re on a budget, pick up M&S Sleep On It Overnight Hand & Foot Cream, £3.50 for 100ml (0845 302 1234) from the brand new Lazy Spa range.

OVERNIGHT HAIR TREATMENTS
Never find time to indulge in a deep conditioning mask during the waking hours? Simply opt for an overnight version instead!
Frederic Fekkai Ageless Overnight Hair Repair, £166 for 100ml (selected Space NK stores) is a hair miracle worker that leaves hair smooth and manageable without weighing it down. For a more budget friendly option, try Schwarzkopf SEAH Hairspa Beauty Sleep Night Mask, £16.25 for 150ml (01296 314000), which feels like a salon treatment for hair. It boasts an incredible scent and rich formula, with ingredients such as Marine Collagen and Amaranth Oil to leave hair wonderfully conditioned.
Philip B Rejuvenating Oil, £27 for 60ml (www.spacenk.co.uk) is one of our favourites here at The-beauty-pages.com. The oil combines ritualistic aspects and the finest botanical extracts to treat both hair and scalp. You need to completely saturate hair with the oil so be sure to place a towel over your pillow and allow plenty of time in the morning to rinse out. Redken Real Control Overnight Treat, £29.95 for 100ml (www.redken.co.uk) is another treatment which penetrates the hair shaft and targets concerns including locks that are unruly, difficult to control, frizzy, coarse, thick and prone to damage.

RISE & SHINE
If your snooze button is well worn or your most uttered phrase is “five more minutes”, investing in some indulgent beauty products may help to tempt you out of bed.
An energising shower gel with spicy extracts will help to wake you up quicker than you can say “Double Shot Latte”. We may hate mornings, but we love Shiffa Basil, Mint & Black Pepper Shower Gel, £21.25 for 200ml (www.shiffa.com) and Natio Pep Up Body Cleanser, £8 for 210ml (Debenhams nationwide) - both which make the a.m. that little bit more bearable.
If you’re a fan of Lush’s Bath Ballistics but don’t have time for a long soak in the morning, try their Ups You Gets Emotibomb, £1.99 (www.lush.co.uk) which works with the steam in your shower to create an invigorating sensory experience. For additional skin caring benefits, why not incorporate Soap & Glory’s aptly named The Breakfast Scrub, £9.45 for 300ml (Boots nationwide) into your morning routine? The ingredients list reads like a breakfast menu comprising oats, bananas & honey and is scented with a delectable maple syrup fragrance.
Feeling livelier is only half the battle, as you also need to look wide awake. Yawning aside, one of the most telling signs of a lack of sleep is tired eyes, with many people suffering from puffiness or dark circles. If you suffer from puffiness, the award-winning Origins No Puffery, £19 for 30ml (www.origins.co.uk) is a worthwhile investment. A little of this cooling gel goes a long way and is truly a skincare saviour!
Alternatively, try soothing eye care products in a rollerball applicator for ease of application even when you’re still half asleep. Try Clinique All About Eyes Serum De-Puffing Eye Massage, £20 for 15ml (www.clinique.co.uk) or Garnier Skin Naturals Tinted Eye Roll On, £9.99 (Boots nationwide).

FAKING IT!
Don’t lose sleep over not getting a full eight hours - as it’s easy to fake the appearance of a restful night.
A must-have for every makeup kit is a good under-eye concealer, which can be used to disguise tell-tale dark circles. As a successful career woman and mother to three children, Bobbi Brown must have suffered a few sleepless nights in her time, yet her immaculate appearance hides it well. She’s the perfect advert for her cosmetics brand, which caters for real women and the Bobbi Brown Tinted Eye Brightener, £22.50 (www.bobbibrown.co.uk) is testament to this. If you find you require a little extra coverage, Benefit Erase Paste, £19.50 (www.benefitcosmetics.co.uk) is a good option and is available in three shades.
A lack of sleep can also be evident in tired-looking skin due to sluggish blood flow. Add some colour and a healthy glow to skin using a light reflecting highlighter and no one will be any the wiser. The brand new Nars Illuminator in Super Orgasm, £21.50 (www.narscosmetics.co.uk) provides a peachy sheen, whilst The Body Shop Tinted Glow Enhancer, £12 (www.thebodyshop.co.uk) is a wallet friendly version for those looking for a natural finish.
Sweet dreams!...

Editor’s Letter (04.03.11)
This week, I have been preparing to move house. There can’t be many things in life that are more stressful… Past moves bring back agonising memories of arguments in IKEA, feelings of utter exhaustion as the third load of belongings are carted into the new place, and the inevitable deep-clean of the old place before we hand the keys over. Yuck. Remind me why we’re doing this again? Last time we moved, I told my husband that I wasn’t doing it alone next time and we’d need to hire a firm to help. Thankfully, he’s honoured that – partly because the cost of moving here is so much cheaper than home, but also I fear in the hope of getting the job done without risking our relationship. So the plan is that tomorrow morning at 9am, we will put our feet up and watch our flat being packed into a hundred boxes. Then we’ll drive to the new place and watch them unpack again. Sadly I doubt it’ll be that simple, but here’s hoping… If I make it out the other side, I will be here again next week to tell you about more of my favourite beauty discoveries… Wish me luck.

Nails Inc. I’m back in the UK next week – and will definitely be paying a visit to Nail Inc’s flagship store on South Molton Street. The place has been totally refurbished and looks amazing, with a clean white and chrome palette, splashes of monochrome wallpaper, and rows and rows of coloured polishes! It still offers the same affordable choice of manicures (from £17.50), pedicures (from £48), extensions (from £50), repair (from £6), and infills (from £32). Their 3-week manicure (from £55) has the beauty industry buzzing. South Molton Street, London.

Estee Lauder. On the subject of nails… If you’d rather do the hard work yourself, I have fallen in love with Estee Lauder’s Mega Fuchsia Nail Lacquer (£14). It’s bang on trend for this season’s trend for neon brights – and will give a welcome splash of colour to the early days of spring. It’s glossy, hard-wearing, and boasts packaging almost as irresistible as what it contains. Oyster Cult, Tempting Melon, and Violet Diva are on my wish list to try next… www.esteelauder.co.uk

Origins. It may be March, but if you are still feeling the chill, why not run yourself a warm bath? And let me recommend the perfect product to put in it – Origins Ginger Float Cream Bubble Bath (£21). This product isn’t new, but it’s definitely iconic. A beauty journalist was raving about it on Twitter last week, which reminded me to dig out my own tub for a much-needed bath. I had forgotten quite how incredible it smelt – warm, sweet, spicy, and comforting. Better still, it subtly laces skin with the scent, so you can enjoy it all day long. www.origins.co.uk

Kyoku. One of the men in your life… I like the sound of this Sake Infused Shave Crème (£25) by Japanese brand Kyoku. Famous for coupling ancient Japanese processes with natural ingredients, the brand has used Japanese Sake in this product to soften skin, along with silicone particles to provide a slick, moist surface for close shaving (and lack of painful nicks). If a pot was sat in our bathroom, I’d be quite tempted to borrow it for my legs – it sounds amazing… Come on Kyoku, a pot for the girls? www.cultbeauty.co.uk

Jennifer Behr. If you are love wearing hair accessories (and they couldn’t be more in-vogue than now), look no further than the amazing Jennifer Behr. The designer is best known for her bridal accessories – but her main line collection is just as fabulous. I am coveting the Dusted Gold Feather Hairband ($225) in gilded copper, Elsa Hairwrap ($975) in sculpted crystal, and Animal Silk Turban Headwrap ($182). Unique, daring, but oh so chic. www.jenniferbehr.com

Spa Review: URBAN RETREAT EVERLASTING MANICURE, HARRODS, KNIGHTSBRIDGE (04.03.11)
What it promises: Using Gelez Polish, the Everlasting Manicure promises to combine the high gloss colour and shine of a varnish with the chip resistant durability of a gel. Available in 12 classic shades, it also contains the highest level of pigment, resulting in a pure vibrant finish that should remain flawless for up to three weeks.
What happens: After heading to Urban Retreat - the iconic beauty haunt on the fifth floor of London’s Harrods – I was taken to the manicure section and invited to settle down in an ultra-comfortable chair. The treatment started with my old nail varnish being removed and my cuticles pushed back and cut. The nails can’t be soaked or hands massaged, as there can be no oil in contact with the gel – so my nails were then gently buffed, so that there was a rough surface to help the gel to adhere. The colour is then painted on like an ordinary polish and each coat is set beneath a UV light. It is quite a slow process, but once the specially formulated top-coat dries and the surface is wiped, then the nails are totally touch dry.
The Results: After the manicure, I kept holding out my hands out as I would with a normal manicure as I was sure I would smudge the paint - but the nails were totally dry. There was less pampering than with a traditional manicure, but the thought of having flawless nails for three weeks more than makes up for it. And the finish was perfect. This is the ideal treatment if you are going on holiday, particularly the pedicure, and the best bit is your nails are not weakened beneath. Stephanie Usher, the nail manager at Urban Retreat, also had some great tips on nail care. She told me that it is a common misconception for people to let their nails ‘breathe’ between manicures, but as the nails are already ‘dead’, it is much better for them to be protected by colour. She also recommended Leighton Denny’s Hydra Flex Shield for my dry brittle nails, to give them hydration as well as strength which has worked a treat. The only word of caution with the everlasting manicure is to make sure to have them professionally removed. It only takes ten minutes to soak the gel off but it ensures that the nails are not damaged underneath.
Price: £50 for 45 minutes
Location: Urban Retreat 5th floor Harrods, Knightsbridge, London. 0207 8938333. http://harrods.urbanretreat.co.uk.

Tried & Tested: ORIENTAL FRAGRANCES (04.03.11)
This week, we’ve tested six scents that promise to take us on a fragrance journey to the Far East…

MILLER HARRIS NOIX DE TUBEREUSE EAU DE PARFUM, £80 for 100ml (www.millerharris.com)
What they say: Noix de Tubereuse began in the endangered tuberose fields of Grasse. The plant’s intensely fragrant leaves are at the heart of a perfume with base notes of tonka bean, orris and amber. Top notes of wild green clover, mimosa and violet animate this mysteriously exotic fragrance.
The Results: I’d never heard of Miller Harris before, but liked the idea that I’d be trying something unique and the packaging certainly reflects this, with a whimsical illustration on the square bottle. I liked that the box contained a spritzer, so that I could choose between dabbing the perfume on or spraying. The scent is described as a floral oriental, with the flowery element. I definitely detected the violet notes, which give the fragrance a sweetness that wouldn’t be to everyone’s taste - but I loved it, as it makes the scent very exotic. As an Eau de Parfum, the scent lasted well on my skin and I didn’t need to reapply. Although expensive, I’ve fallen in love with this perfume and would recommend the fragrance house to anyone looking for a signature scent that’s different to the standard high street offering.
Best for: Luxury

JO MALONE VANILLA & ANISE COLOGNE, £68 for 100ml (www.jomalone.com)
What they say: Inspired by the floral landscape of Madagascar, Vanilla and Anise blends the delicate scent of the rare vanilla orchid with the spicy accent of anise and the warmth of vetiver, white amber and clove- an unexpected, modern story of vanilla.
The Results: The perfume is presented in Jo Malone’s signature minimalist, yet uber desirable packaging – so it was a real treat to be handed this fragrance to test. I was surprised at how well the combination of vanilla and anise works and I adored it from first spritz. It feels incredibly modern and very wearable, not at all sickly sweet as some vanilla fragrances can be. The scent developed into soft, gourmand notes and lingered on my skin throughout the day, without being overwhelming. This fragrance has completely challenged my perception of orientals - if you think you can’t wear them, try this and you’ll be converted!
Best for: A modern choice

GUCCI GUILTY, £50 for 4 x 15ml (0207 529 4700)
What they say: The scent seizes the attention with a flamboyant opening born of the natural rush that is mandarin- imbued with a modish transparency- shimmering alongside an audacious fist of pink pepper. The middle notes are an alluring concoction of heady lilac and geranium, laced with the succulent tactility of peach- all velvet femininity with a beguiling hint of provocation. The patchouli that is the hallmark of Gucci fragrances here conveys a message of strength, while the voluptuousness of amber suggests deep femininity.
The Results: I work long hours and often head straight from the office to socialise – so a purse spray suits me well. The set contains one branded spray bottle and three refills. Unfortunately, the refills don’t have spritzers so you can’t use them individually - but it’s a great set nonetheless and would make a wonderful gift. I loved the functionality, with a twist lid to prevent any leakage and being plastic, it’s pretty hard-wearing, which is important for a product which is going to be carried around on a daily basis. It’s been a while since I wore a Gucci perfume, but I have to say that I was impressed. Fruity notes, particularly peach, keep the perfume young and fresh and as the day progressed, I could detect warmer notes, but they were not at all overbearing.
Best for: Travel

THE ORGANIC PHARMACY ORGANIC GLAM ORIENTAL BLOSSOM, £110 for 100ml (www.organicglam.com)
What they say: Oriental Blossom opens with subtle citrus notes of Sicilian Bergamot, Lemon and Mandarin and moves seamlessly into the spicy floral heart of Cinnamon, Clove, Rose and Neroli. As the heart gently evaporates you are left with the rich warm notes of Oakmoss, Vetiver, Pepper and the sweetness of Vanilla and Ylang Ylang.
The Results: Although I regularly use natural skincare products, I have to admit to feeling a little dubious about trying an organic perfume, with preconceptions that I would smell like an incense-laden hippy. I was pleasantly surprised. The bottle is weighty, with modern, clean lines and not a hint of self-righteous eco warrior about it. When I first sprayed the scent onto my skin, I could clearly detect pepper and clove notes, which added warmth. The fragrance settled onto my skin very quickly and I found its subtlety very wearable. Although spicy, the floral notes keep the scent feminine and I really enjoyed the unique blend. This perfume doesn’t come cheap, but if you’re looking for something different or if you’re a dedicated green goddess, you’ll find it worth every penny.
Best for: Organic option

GUERLAIN SHALIMAR EAU DE PARFUM, £57 for 50ml (01932 233 887)
What they say: Citrus top notes take flight in a breath of freshness that stirs in an enveloping, delicately powered heart. The spellbinding trail of carnal vanilla, the penetrating charm of iris, the balmy roundness of opopanax and the gourmand warmth of tonka bean orchestrate an intimate, languid symphony of scent.
The Results: This perfume was created in the hedonistic ‘20s and when I first smelt it, I was instantly transported to a more glamorous era. It’s the sort of fragrance I imagine Wallace Simpson would have worn, from the elegant bottle to the provocative blend with an initial burst of masculine citrus, which quickly settles into a much warmer heart. This is a classic fragrance, which isn’t for the faint-hearted. Despite its heritage, the fragrance still feels relevant today and when I wore it on an evening out, I found I carried myself with a newfound confidence. It’s a special perfume, quite unlike anything I’ve tried before. This is definitely one that every fragrance aficionado should try.
Best for: Classic choice

THIERRY MUGLER ANGEL EAU DE PARFUM, NON- REFILLABLE BOTTLE, £41.87 for 25ml (0207 307 6700)
What they say: In the tradition of Haute Parfumerie, Thierry Mugler was inspired to search for a new olfactive universe. To create a fragrance which was innovative, original and distinctive. A “short” note fragrance with immediate impact, in the style of the truly great classics. He also wanted the fragrance to evoke.. delicious childhood memories of candy floss and chocolate which make us feel warm and secure..
The Results: Thierry Mugler’s Angel is renowned for being the fragrance that people either love or hate - so I was curious to try it. I absolutely adored the unusual star shaped bottle, which is almost jewel-like in its beauty. Angel is a strong scent and a little goes a long way. Less is definitely more when it comes to applying this - I only needed the smallest spritz. I noticed some slightly sour fruity notes, which quickly gave way to an intense, sweet concoction with a heavy patchouli base which adds a sexy quality to prevent it being too saccharine. Luckily, I loved this scent, but when I wore it to meet friends, some of them commented that they hated it - proof of its polarising effects! For this reason, I’d save the perfume for special occasions, rather than wearing it as an everyday scent.
Best for: Rule breakers

Feature: THE NO NONSENSE SKINCARE GUIDE (04.03.11)
Everything you’ve always wanted to know about your skin, in one handy, no-nonsense guide…

WHAT IS SKIN?
It can be soft, rough, dry, oily, blemished, flawless, hairy, smooth, or wrinkled. It comes in infinite different colour combinations. It grows, stretches, sometimes breaks, and is totally waterproof.
But what exactly is skin?
Skincare guru Liz Earle (http://uk.lizearle.com) explains: “Our skin is more than just an outer cosmetic wrapping – it’s a highly sophisticated mechanism and the largest organ of the body. It has a nervous system, which monitors outside assaults such as cold, heat and environmental factors, such as stress or illness.”
She continues: “Our skin is made up of three main layers; the epidermis - the top part we see and touch, the dermis - which is made up mostly of bundles of collagen (which give skin elasticity and bounce), and underneath that the subcutaneous fatty layer which is filled with fat-filled cells, blood vessels and nerves.”
And ever wondered why our skin suffers when we eat badly or feel under the weather? Helen Sher, creator of Sher System, adds: “When the body allocates nutrients from food, internal organs tend to utilise what's available first as they need nutrients to function. Skin is last in the queue – so taking a skin supplement makes sense.”
We recommend: Holland & Barrett Skin, Hair, and Nails Formula, £6.99 (www.hollandandbarrett.com), which contain antioxidants Vitamin A, Vitamin E, and Selenium to boost health of skin.

WHY DOES SKIN COME IN DIFFERENT COLOURS?
The beauty of skin is that it comes in a million different shades, each as beautiful as each other. From the palest white, to the darkest mahogany – our skin tone is as individual as we are.
But why weren’t we all born with the same skin colour? Why does it differ so much?
Dr Darren McKeown (www.drdarrenmckeown.com) explains: “The colour of skin is determined by the presence of a pigment called melanin. This is produced by melanocyte cells, which are in the bottom layer of the epidermis. Interestingly, there is the same number of melanocytes in the skin regardless of colour.”

“However, what does vary is the activity of the cells and the amount of pigment each cell produces. So a person with dark skin will have the same number of cells as a person with light skin – the difference is that some cells are more active in producing melanin.”
We recommend: Struggling to find a makeup range to suit your skin tone? Head to BECCA Cosmetics (www.beccacosmetics.com), Illamasqua (www.illamasqua.com), or Bobbi Brown (www.bobbibrown.co.uk). The three brands are renowned for their vast foundation range, from the palest to the darkest shades.

DO I REALLY NEED TO CLEANSE, TONE, AND MOISTURISE?
It’s a twice-daily ritual that many of us know well… Meticulously cleansing our skin from grime and makeup, followed by the refreshing swipe of toner-soaked cotton bud, and generous slatherings of moisturiser.
But is it worth the time and expense? Do we really need to cleanse, tone, and moisturise?
Yes, says Katherine Bell, Head Therapist at The Sanctuary (www.thesanctuary.co.uk): “Imagine washing your hands from all the daily dirt and impurities with just water? It just isn’t enough - and it’s just the same with your skin. The key to healthy, glowing skin is to have a good routine – and the three simple steps of cleansing, toning and moisturising is the perfect recipe.”
“When it comes to cleansing, keeping skin at a natural PH level of 5.5 is important - so ensure you use a cleanser that will gently cleanse your skin, without leaving it feeling tight and uncomfortable.”
“Toning helps to refresh the skin. It tightens pores, which will prevent further bacteria from entering. Toner also can act as an extra veil of moisture before applying your moisturiser so great for dry and dehydrated skin - always look for one without alcohol.”
“Finally, moisturiser is probably the most important step in your skincare routine. Look for a moisturiser with antioxidants and an SPF to protect your skin from the nasty free radicals found everywhere from pollution, UV rays and general environment.”
We recommend: Start with the award-winning Liz Earle Hot Cloth Cleanser, from £5.10, followed by the equally effective Liz Earle Skin Tonic, from £4.85 (http://uk.lizearle.com). Finish with Clinique’s Superdefense SPF25 Age Defense Moisturiser, from £26 (www.clinique.co.uk).

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN SKIN TANS OR BURNS?
Whether you have pale, medium or dark skin, a little sunshine can make us feel happier and healthier…
But what really happens when we let our skin tan or burn?
Dr Lars Lindmark from Imedeen (www.imedeen.co.uk) explains: “When UVB rays penetrate the top level of skin – called the epidermis – a natural, brown-coloured pigment called melanin is produced to protect it from the sun. This causes a tan to develop – but with continued exposure, the structure of the skin starts to deteriorate. UVA rays penetrate into the dermal layer where they destroy collagen and elastin fibres. Skin loses suppleness, elasticity, and the ability to retain water.”
Crystal Clear’s Sharon Hilditch (www.crystalclear.co.uk) adds: “Think of how a peeled apple looks after ten minutes. It starts to go brown and look damaged – and that is exactly what is happening to our skin when it is exposed to too much sunshine.”
The advice? “Seek shade between 11am and 3pm and always apply a high SPF” advises Boots Suncare Research and Development Manager Clare O’Connor.
We recommend: Soltan Moisturising Suncare Lotion, £9.45 (Boots Nationwide) boasts a five star UV rating, which makes it a sensible and affordable choice.

I’M NOT A TEENAGER – SO WHY DO I STILL GET SPOTS?
As a teenager, you prayed for the day when those blemishes cleared up – but it still hasn’t happened… You still wake up to large, angry spots and acne.
Why is it still happening?
Katherine Bell, Head Therapist at The Sanctuary (www.thesanctuary.co.uk) says: “It can be so frustrating but there are several reasons why spots can occur after puberty. These include increase in sebum production under the influence of androgenic hormones (male dominating hormone), a poor diet, stress, lack of exercise, lack of sleep, hereditary, over-stripping of the skin through incorrect/poor skincare routine, food intolerances or reaction to medication.”
“Products which contain which hazel can really help to refine the pores, whilst the deeper action of ingredients like salicylic acid have an anti bacterial effect, helping to not only promote the refinement of the pores, but to prevent the build up of bacteria which can then lead to spots developing.”
Sarah Brown, founder of Pai Skincare (www.paiskincare.com) adds: “Don’t forget to cleanse your diet too. Refined sugars and animal fats are renowned acne-inducers, so try to cut back on those sweet snacks and fatty foods. Remember though, it can take four weeks for new skin cells to rise to the surface, so don’t be discouraged if you don’t see the effects straight away – stick with it!”
We recommend: Start applying Clinique Turnaround Concentrate Visible Skin Renewer, £30 (www.clinique.co.uk) to skin after cleansing every morning and night (stick to problem areas that are prone to blemishes). It contains Salicylic Acid, which is a BHA (beta hydroxy acid), which will gently exfoliate skin and keep pores clear and unblocked.

WHY DOES SKIN AGE? AND IS IT REALLY POSSIBLE FOR A SKINCARE PRODUCT TO REVERSE IT?
We hear term ‘anti-ageing’ in the world of beauty all the time. There are endless products that promise to smooth skin, fill wrinkles, fade hyperpigmentation, and restore that youthful glow. It can all be a bit of a minefield…
What does ‘skin ageing’ really mean? And can a product really reverse that?
Skin guru Liz Earle (http://uk.lizearle.com) explains: “Our skin ages as we grow older – and as a result our oil production slows down and our skin becomes drier. The breakdown of collagen and elastin, mainly due to declining oestrogen, means that the structure of the skin becomes looser, and the contours of the face change. Although many women find ageing daunting, I truly believe that ageing is a natural part of life - not a disease needing treatment.”
Katherine Bell, Head Therapist at The Sanctuary (www.thesanctuary.co.uk) continues: “No cream will directly remove a line/wrinkle but many fine lines can appear due to dehydration. Therefore, as soon as you apply a hydrating cream, lines can most definitely be smoothed over. Look for ingredients that promote collagen synthesis, this helps to protect and strengthen the skin from within.”
We recommend: Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream, from £76 (www.timetospa.co.uk), which helps to support existing collagen in the skin. We’ve tried it and tested it – and can vouch for smooth, glowing skin after a couple of weeks of use.

Blog: A DAY IN THE LIFE OF MARIA HATZISTEFANIS, FOUNDER OF RODIAL (04.03.11)
I wake up at 7am
First thing; I check my iphone for emails from our accounts in the Far East. I get ready for work and walk my boys to school, which is conveniently around the corner from our house. My housekeeper prepares for me a morning shake, part Crash Diet SMOOTHIE powder, part almond milk and a chopped banana that I drink on my way to work. I like to start the day with protein, it keeps my energy levels up until lunch.
My work outfit: A Victoria Beckham or RM dress, if I have meetings - or Helmut Lang skinny black trousers and a Balenciaga top. I always wear a statement necklace and cocktail rings.
My makeup routine: Glamoxy Snake Serum is my miracle primer, it’s like instant botox. Then Armani foundation, Benefit Blush, and a lipstick in a berry stain (which could be from anywhere, as I buy these all the time and somehow they always disappear in my bag!)
First thing at work: I check sales from the previous day and meet with my team to plan the week and set objectives
On my desk: Perrier Sparkling water (I consume about two bottles a day), LIP+NIP FIX (my lips are addicted to it) Philosophy CLEAN fragrance (which i use as room spray) and the latest issues of Vogue, Grazia and Stylist.
Lunch: If I don’t have a business meeting at Cipriani or Ceconni’s, I get a salad delivered to my desk from The Kitchen Therapy, around the corner from our office. I take a Tummy Tuck STICK after lunch, mixed with water. It makes me feel lighter instantly.
On my to-do-list today: Approve new skincare packaging, discuss next year's new product launches with our PR agency, take a conference call with our web designers, and finalise plans for a party I am throwing for Bella Freud.
I leave work after 7pm.
My favourite way to wind down after work: I have a 60s-style cocktail tray set up in our drawing room, and have a Campari with blood orange cocktail and then dinner with my husband and friends at home. I love to entertain.
Bedtime routine: Rodial Glamtox cleanser not only cleanses my skin, but also has a rose and citrus scent that instantly puts me into relaxing mode. I love a relaxing bath, with a few drops of the NIP+FAB multi-fix oil. I always sip herbal tea, I recently discovered nettle infusion.
