TRIED & TESTED... HAIR MASKS (27.05.11)
This week the spotlight is on hair masks. We test six of the best…
ORIBE SIGNATURE MASK, £60 for 175ml (www.spacenk.co.uk)
What they say: This crème de la crème deep-hydrating masque transforms even the driest, most over-it hair, leaving it supremely soft and irresistibly touchable.
The Results: I instantly fell in love with the luxurious packaging – a sleek black tub embossed with the Oribe logo, presented in a cream box. The only downside was that the instructions are very unclear and frustratingly, I ended up searching the internet to find out how to use the mask. It was, however, worth the effort. Used as a post-shampoo treatment in place of conditioner, the mask is a thick, creamy formula with an incredible scent. Although pricey, I found that I only needed to use a little despite having long hair, so the tub would last for some time. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy the mask was to rinse out given the thick texture. I didn’t notice any frizz taming benefits and still needed to use my usual styling products – but I was impressed at how soft my hair felt and the manageability.
Best for: Luxury buy
TREVOR SORBIE BEAUTIFUL BLONDE ICE COOL PLATINUM INTENSIVE TREATMENT, £4.99 for 200ml (www.trevorsorbie.com)
What they say: Use this intensive mask once a week to replenish the moisture in blonde hair. Use as part of your weekly routine to penetrate the hair shaft, strengthening, conditioning and repairing damaged hair. Damaged hair will be left feeling nourished and silky smooth and colour will be enhanced.
The Results: I really liked the hair mask. I prefer it when they are in bottles or tubes, but this was easy enough to use. You only have to leave it on hair for 3-4 minutes, which really isn’t much longer than regular conditioner so it is also very convenient. The product itself has quite a strong scent, but smelt quite subtle on hair afterwards. It felt luxurious to use and my hair was soft and manageable afterwards. It was a fairly light formula, which was good for my fine hair. I could also tell the difference the next couple of times I washed my hair, with it still being super soft. I would definitely recommend it.
Best for: Blondes
WELLA PROFESSIONALS ENRICH SELF WARMING TREATMENT, £10.55 for 150ml (www.wellaprofessionals.co.uk)
What they say: Wella Professionals Enrich Self Warming Treatment is a self warming mask infused with Apricot Oil designed to replenish dry, damaged hair, leaving it instantly full of shine and soft to the touch.
The Results: I found the mask easy to use and liked that it’s presented in a functional tube, albeit with fairly unassuming packaging that probably wouldn’t grab my attention in a retail environment. The mask itself is a lightweight cream with a delicate, fresh scent. The warming sensation felt comforting and pampering, but as you only need to leave the mask on for as long as the heat remains (around a minute), it didn’t feel like a guilty pleasure. You could easily replace your usual conditioner with this once a week without having to set aside extra time. What’s more, it rinsed out easily and my hair seemed more manageable. I’d definitely recommend this as a fuss-free treat.
Best for: Speed
INDOLA INNOVA GLAMOUR CRYSTAL HAIR MASK, £15.95 for 500ml (www.feelunique.com)
What they say: This is a great product for a weekly ritual to provide that glamorous shine everybody wants without overburdening the hair. With apricot kernel oil to restructure the hair and replenish the outer layer of the hair fibre. Put a shining finish on your hair style.
The Results: My first impression upon receiving the Indola mask was how big the tub is - there’s a generous 500ml of product for less than £20, offering fantastic value for money. The packaging is reminiscent of professional brands so I had high expectations. I absolutely adored the scent and the lightweight cream shot through with pearlised shimmer particles added a sense of luxury. The mask was easy to use and the tub looked barely touched after my first couple of uses, showing just how long it will last. Whilst my hair wasn’t quite as shiny as I’d hoped, the condition did feel improved and hopefully, in time, this would be reflected in its appearance.
Best for: Value for money
RICHARD WARD COUTURE HAIR CLAY MINERAL MASK, £14.50 for 75ml (www.richardward.com)
What they say: Perfect for fine, flyaway and limp hair, this treatment masque contains Dead Sea Mud and Moringa Oil to help target build up, which often leads to flat, limp hair. Wheat Protein is used to help increase volume and moisture levels, leaving hair light, volumised yet silken and moisturised.
The Results: I was a little dubious about trying a clay-based mask, as I expected it to be gritty, heavy and difficult to rinse out. I shouldn’t have worried- this is absolutely gorgeous and lives up to its Couture name. The wonderfully scented formula is a very thick cream so you only need to use a small amount to gain the benefits. I liked that the miniature size is the same format as the standard tub so there’s no compromise on design even when travelling, and everything about this product feels expensive. My hair was left feeling silky smooth and light. I loved that my hair looked like I’d had a professional treatment and I really feel that this mask delivered on its claims.
Best for: Travel
SCHWARZKOPF ESSENSITY MOISTURE MASK, £13.35 for 150ml (01296 314 000)
What they say: Treat dry, lacklustre hair with deeply nourishing formulations that restore and strengthen from within, delivering essential and lasting hydration. Infused with Aloe Vera and Organic Olive Oil, frizzy and flyaway is transformed into caressably smooth, supple and shiny in an instant.
The Results: Although it doesn’t claim to be 100% green, they have endeavoured to keep the mask as natural as possible, removing “nasties” such as parabens, paraffin oils and silicons. The packaging reiterates this, as the mask is presented in a recyclable green tub with clear directions for use. The mask is a thick cream and the fragrance is absolutely incredible - fresh and fruity – so I was a little disappointed that it didn’t linger once I’d dried and styled my hair. I liked that the thick formula meant there was no dripping or mess. I left the mask on for 5 minutes and was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to rinse out. My hair was left feeling soft, although I still needed to use a shine enhancer. I loved that my fine hair wasn’t weighed down by this product, as it has been with other masks I’ve tried. I’ll certainly buy a pot once I run out.
Best for: Natural choice
Spa Review: JEBEL ALI GOLF RESORT AND SPA, DUBAI (27.05.11)
Facilities: With the balmy temperatures of Dubai just a 6.5 hour flight away, this stunning resort is feasible to reach for a luxurious long weekend of pampering, sunbathing, wining, and dining – or, if time allows it, a longer break to explore more of what the sandy city has to offer. And for residents of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, this place is should definitely be on your weekend hit list… Jebel Ali Golf Resort and Spa is about 15 minutes drive from the city’s Marina area – and as you wind along the long drive to reach the hotel, passing roaming peacocks on the way, you will feel like you have arrived in another world. The five-star luxury is instantly apparent as you register in the grand reception area – and once settled in your room (each boasting spectacular views over either the turquoise water of the Arabian golf or the perfect, rolling lawns of the golf course), it is time to make your way down to the inviting pool area to relax, read, and bask in sunshine. And when you are suitably relaxed, it will be time to pad over to the luxurious spa, which occupies two floors (the top floor boasting the same incredible views of the ocean.) There are 10 treatment rooms, a specialised Hammam scrub room, spacious changing facilities, a ladies majlis, relaxation lounge, spa boutique and an extensive wet area with a jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and invigorating showers. The Elemis treatments are truly divine and will leave you in a state of bliss – and when you have finished your post-treatment herbal tea and summoned enough energy to return to your room (or sunbed), there are no less than 11 bars and restaurants in which to spend the evening.
Ambience: The pool areas of this family hotel have a totally relaxed, holiday vibe. Not the place to head if noisy, splashing kids aren’t your cup of tea (although if they are, you can relax and enjoy your stay without worrying about your little ones disturbing the other guests). But when you head to the spa, you can expect a chilled, peaceful haven to further relax tight shoulders and ease a furrowed brow. When you check out of this resort, you will feel like a new person…
Treatment Tested: Elemis Absolute Spa Ritual, 120 minutes.
This is probably the most indulgent treatment on offer at Jebel Ali Golf Resort & Spa! Using beautifully-scented Elemis oils, the therapist worked on my whole body, paying particular attention to areas I had highlighted as extra tense (neck, shoulders, and back). The strength was also determined by me – I opted for deep tissue, which was pain free and surprisingly relaxing – so this treatment is truly bespoke. I highly recommend it – I felt knot-free, but energised after the treatment.

Blog: ESTHER FIELDGRASS – FOUNDER OF EF MEDISPA – DISCUSSES THE CAUSES AND CURES FOR ADULT ACNE (27.05.11)
Almost everyone suffers from the odd spot at some point in their life, but increasingly I’m seeing clients with ‘adult acne’. It can be very distressing for women who thought they said goodbye to spots after their teens. Often with adult acne it is the case of the body being imbalanced.
There are four main imbalances that it’s worth looking into; stress, hormones, poor diet, and skin health.
Stress
We all lead more stressful, busy lives, and this can lead to problems with the skin. Take some time out whenever you can, even if it’s just twenty minutes sitting quietly without the TV or any distractions.
Hormones Stress
If the type of spots you are getting appear to be hormonal, I’d recommend a trip to see a hormone specialist to get checked out.
Poor Diet
I am a firm believer in ‘inner health for outer wellbeing’ – put simply, what happens on the outside is quite often a reflection of what is happening on the inside! Poor diet and a body that is too acidic can lead to spots and other skin problems. I often work with an in-house nutritionist at who can offer nutritional advice to prevent future outbreaks.
I would also recommend supplements, which can help; Cosmedix Complete Greens Balance will help you to be more alkaline and Cosmedix Clarity Skin supplements can help clear acne (both www.efmedishop.com)
Skin Health
One of the causes of a body being too acidic is actually poor excretion. So, another solution for acne that is not often mentioned is colonic hydrotherapy. A colonic will get your system moving again and help make the body more alkaline. Many clients describe a course of colonic hydrotherapy as the best facial they’ve ever had!
If you’re not looking after your skin properly, maybe using the wrong products, or by simply using the same towel to dry your face every day, you could be inadvertently spreading acne bacteria and causing flare-ups. Home care is vital - I recommend trusted, high quality brands such as Dermaquest, Cosmedix and Skin Ceuticals (all available at www.efmedishop.com)
I often advise Chemical peels for those suffering from adult acne. It is important to have the correct strength peel and not one that is simply on offer. Do your research and speak to a qualified aesthetic therapist who can point you in the right direction.
Acne Scars
It is worth mentioning that if you have suffered from acne, then often you can be left with scaring. This can cause just as much distress as actual acne, but it is not something you have to live with. I would suggest a combination of FRAXEL laser and IPL with radio frequency to clear skin of the scaring and hyperpigmentation left behind by spots. This combination technique encourages natural rebuilding of collagen for visibly clearer skin, which looks plump and firm.
If you’re having problems with your skin please visit my Kensington or Chelsea MediSpas for a free consultation with one of our treatment co-ordinators, who can advise you on the best possible treatments and skin-care regimes.

Editor’s Letter (27.05.11)
This week, The-Beauty-Pages.com features a step-by-step guide to getting feet in fabulous condition for summer. If you haven’t read it yet, click here. I strongly recommend that you give it a go... A home pedicure is one of those things that can completely transform both your look and the way you feel. It’s quick, easy, and enjoyable – especially when it comes to picking the polish! I love going for bright, daring hues (which I’d rarely wear on my fingers) – at the moment, I’m weaing a bright pillar-box red on toes. Oh and here’s a little tip for extending your hard work… Paint an extra coat of top coat onto nails 3 to 4 days after the initial pedicure and it will instantly freshen and extend the polish. And when you’ve finished? It’s time to pick a fabulous pair of sandals…
Siena X. Regular readers will be well aware that my skin is paler than pale and I struggle to find fake tan that looks natural. Last week, Beautique.com sent me a bottle of Siena X extend & Perfect Gradual Tan (£15.30) and it is my new must-have product. The silky cream smells incredible when first applied, with a yummy coconut and vanilla fragrance – and although it develops into that nasty biscuit pong (which can admittedly very rarely be avoided with fake tan), the colour is just amazing. It’s such a natural, streak-free, golden colour that lasts for roughly a week. www.beautique.com
Nails Inc. I love this collaboration between Nails Inc and 7 For All Mankind. The set of three shades – denim blue, hot red, and smoky grey (which would all look great with jeans) – are given away as a gift with every purchase from the 7 For All Mankind collection at Selfridges London. What better excuse do you need to treat yourself to something from the department store’s hottest denim range? I’m coveting a pair of wide-legged Dojo – a 70’s-style that is exclusively available at Selfridges. Offer available at Selfridges, London.
bareMinerals. I’ve used bareMinerals Mineral Foundation for a few years, but tested their new Matte Foundation (£19.50) for the first time this week. It’s the same consistency, same method of applying, and same lightweight feel. What differs is the amazing matte finish, which makes skin appear flawless. Having got so used to the original, which allows skin to glow naturally, I am totally amazed by this product – my skin actually looks airbrushed. And it lasts longer too, still noticeable well past lunchtime. Very impressed. www.qvcuk.com
Lush. I am well aware that the name of this shower gel isn’t the most appealing - but believe me when I say that you will love the scent of Dirty (from £4.25)… Created with mountain springs in mind, the thick gel contains spearmint and menthol crystals to uplift, refresh, and energise. It’s a sweet scent (much sweeter than peppermint) and clings to skin for hours. That’s a big bonus, as I’m sick of testing beautifully-scented shower products that fade on skin as soon as you step out the shower. Oh and this product is unisex, which means that the whole family will love it. www.lush.co.uk
EIC. I has little to do with beauty, but is beautiful nonetheless… Last week, I was sent a pot of East India Company’s Milk Chocolate Enrobed Raspberries (£7.95) and practically had to wrestle them out of the hands of my family… The real raspberries are freeze dried to seal in flavour and texture, then coated in finest milk chocolate. It’s the perfect combination of sweet and tart – and they can be enjoyed with ice cream, coffee, or simply on their own. While you are buying a pot (as I am sure you won’t be able to resist), check out what else EIC has to offer – the website is so tempting! www.theeastindiacompanyfinefood.com
Feature: FABULOUS SUMMER FEET (27.05.11)
Get set for sandal season with our step-by-step guide to ensuring feet are in tip top condition for summer.
STEP 1: SOAK
Aside from offering relaxation benefits, warm water helps to soften skin, cuticles and nails – so start your home pedicure with a pampering foot soak.
Stephanie Usher, Nail Manager at Urban Retreat in Harrods advises, “Soak feet in a shallow bath of warm water, you can put in any shower gel or bath foam. If you have a shower hose in the bath, it is a good way to rinse products off. Alternatively, if you have a foot spa this will be great as settings can allow for foot massage, which increases circulation, promotes healthy nail growth and improves the appearance of feet.”
If you’d like to up the indulgence factor, use a specialist foot soak such as the classic The Body Shop Peppermint Foot Soak, £7 for 200g (www.thebodyshop.co.uk), which smells amazing and feels like a treat to use, whilst being wallet friendly. Another budget buy is Avon Foot Works Lavender Soak, £4 for 100ml (www.avonshop.co.uk), which is fantastic for reviving tired feet after a long day or a night on the tiles.
For the ultimate in pampering, look no further than Leighton Denny Sole Relief Luxurious Foot Soak, £13.25 for 125ml (www.leightondenny.com) from the celebrity manicurist’s signature range. It’s packed with essential oils for a sensory experience.
STEP 2: SCRUB
Sloughing off dead skin is a key step in ensuring feet are sandal ready – and there’s a range of scrubs on the market to suit your needs and your budget.
The wonderfully fruity fragrance of Barielle 60 Second Mani Pedi, £15.96 for 340g (www.beautybay.com) is perfect for getting in the mood for summer and the large granules allow for a gentle scrub. For a more abrasive exfoliation, try Lush Stepping Stone Foot Scrub, £2.80 (www.lush.co.uk), which is made of 25% pumice for sloughing away dead skin. It’s presented in an adorable foot shape and is packed with fabulously scented, nourishing oils such as lemon, lime and jojoba.
Jetting off on holiday? Pack a travel sized scrub so that you keep on top of any dry skin whilst you’re away - you need to exfoliate feet frequently to prevent a build up. The granules in The Sanctuary Luxury Foot Polish, £5.10 for 75ml (www.thesanctuary.co.uk) have just the right amount of abrasiveness for regular use, whilst the tube is a good size for travel and the inclusion of lavender oil mean it’s enjoyable to use.
STEP 3: TOOL WORK
For toughened skin, experts recommend investing in a foot file and using it little and often. Don’t be overzealous when using as it may result in skin growing back thicker and tougher, not to mention being painful! To ensure a gentle file, use the tool on softened skin after a bath, shower or foot soak.
Stephanie Usher, Nail Manager at Urban Retreat in Harrods suggests what to look for when choosing a foot file, “There are so many. I personally just prefer the basic rasp file as this will smooth hard skin. Metal ones are good but you need to be careful not to take too much off as it can cause damage. The rasp foot file can be used every day in the bath or shower and is best used wet as the skin will roll off easily. To smooth after, go over with the softer side dry.”
OPI Callus File, £21.25 (www.lenawhite.co.uk) leads the way with a double edged, lightweight file and easy grip handle, or for the ultimate in luxury, invest in a Diamancel Diamond Foot Buffer, £39 (www.blissworld.co.uk).
For a more purse friendly option, try Soap & Glory Foot Buffer, £8.75 (Boots Nationwide), which includes the handy hint to rub rough heels with lemon juice first to aid exfoliation. It’s a well thought out product with a removable mini file in the handle, specially designed to target smaller areas such as around the toes.
STEP 4: CUTICLES
It’s easy to neglect cuticles on toes, but cuticle care shouldn’t be reserved solely for fingers. As with hands, removing cuticles should be left to the professionals to avoid damage. Instead, Holly Adams-Brown, Spa Manager at Cowshed Clarendon Cross advises: “Use a cuticle pusher to push back your cuticles whilst they are still soft” (following your foot soak).
Care for the condition of cuticles by massaging in a caring balm or oil, which will stimulate blood flow and improve the health of nails. Badger Cuticle Care, £4.99 for 21g (Waitrose nationwide) boasts an exotically warm scent of ginger and lemongrass and a formula packed with hydrating shea butter, castor and olive oils. It also contains rosemary to boost circulation and thereby, encourage healthy nail growth, all presented in a handy tin with adorable illustration.
Ciate Love Me Oil, £12 for 13.5ml (www.ciate.co.uk) is an almond-based cuticle oil, presented in an easy-to-use bottle and brush format. Keep it beside your bed as a reminder to apply every night.
STEP 5: CREAM
Slathering on foot cream is one of the easiest ways to care for feet, helping to revive and nourish. Take the time to massage the cream in for all-round health benefits.
Christine Shahin, Licensed Cosmetologist and proprietor of Faces of Astarte/ Expressions Eco Salon in the US, explains the benefits of opting for a natural product: “Feet are very sensitive and absorbent, so it’s important to use the purest products. This is why Feet Relief by Aubrey Organics, £8.57 (www.aubreyorganicsuk.co.uk) is perfect (we use it for our salon treatments). Feet Relief is the perfect after massage lotion whose warming/cooling organic herbals added to rich emollients contribute to the total holistic pedicure experience”. Another organic cream worth a look is Lavera Basis Sensitive Organic Foot Cream, £4.95 for 75ml (www.pravera.co.uk), which is non-greasy and a good option for those with sensitive skin.
If it’s refreshment you’re after, try Payot Cooling Powdered Foot Gel, £20 for 100ml (0207 494 6220); an innovative gel cream that dries to a powder finish so there’s zero greasiness or slipperiness, just a freshened peppermint scent, great for when you’re in a hurry! We’re also impressed with Healthspan Nurture Soothing Foot & Heel Balm, £6.95 for 100ml (www.healthspannurture.co.uk); an easily absorbed, nourishing cream with refreshing and deodorising lemon scented tea tree oil.
For a luxurious, home spa treat, try the brand new Elemis Sp@Home Treat Your Feet Foot Cream, £16 for 75ml (www.timetospa.co.uk). The first foot cream from the Brit brand has an incredible scent (as Elemis is famous for), offers velvety smooth application, and delivers on its sole softening claims.
To optimise the benefits from your cream, wrap feet in cling film whilst the cream is still quite thick on the skin, cover with soaks and rest over a hot water bottle as the warmth will enable the product to penetrate even further. Or pop on a pair of Bliss Softening Socks, £36.80 (www.blissworld.co.uk) before bedtime.
STEP 6: COLOUR
The finishing step in any pedicure is beautifully polished nails. Be sure to start with a base coat to guard against staining and end with a top coat for a lasting, high-gloss finish.
Faye Fasan, founder of The Chelsea Day Spa identifies the key trends to look out for, “Nail polish colours are always inspired by fashion. This season’s nail colours are elegant, bold and suit women with strong fashion sense and a love of taking risks. The main nail polish tendencies suggest us using brighter nail colours like corals, raspberries, hot pink, lime, lemon, royal and pillar box reds.”
A pop of coral polish looks incredible in the summer and works with most skin tones. Check out Jessica Nail Colour in Enchantress, £7.65 (www.feelunique.com), which verges on neon. Alternatively, try a punchy shade such as Sensual Coral, Electric Plum or Pink Punch from L’Oreal Paris’ Resist and Shine Titanium Nail Polish range, £6.19 (Boots Nationwide).
Toes offer a great excuse to try out more daring shades, such as blues which celebrity manicurist, Liza Smith has identified as her favourite trend for the season, “My must have shade this season is Blue. Ranging from ‘70s pastel to ‘80s electric. Blue eye shadow has made a comeback on this season’s catwalks but for the less brave and non-teens, it’s easier to wear it on your nails!” For blues with a cream finish, try Filthy Gorgeous Minx, Air-Kiss or Midnight, £9 (www.filthygorgeouslondon.com) or, for a touch of sparkle at a bargain price, GOSH Blue Monday, £4.99 (Superdrug Nationwide). Keep colour fresh with a new slick of top coat once a week.
Spa Review: THAI SQUARE SPA, COVENT GARDEN, LONDON (20.11.11)
Facilities: From the moment I stepped inside to be greeted by one of the Thai therapists, I felt I could have been part of an exotic haven in the heart of Phuket. Opened late last year, the spa is still sparklingly new. The reception area is accompanied by a buzzing café serving traditional and delicious Thai food - and the spa itself is in the bowels of the building, designed like a dimly lit sanctuary. It is all dark and atmospheric, with textured stone walls, wood carvings and tiled floors. At the entrance, guests are invited to remove their shoes before slipping into Thai slippers, just one of the many authentic touches. I was led to the changing room where I changed into my cosy robe found in my locker. Padding over to one of the seven treatment rooms, I was surprised to find an imposing copper free-standing bath – where you can enjoy milk, floral or aromatic soaks, amidst the dark wood furniture and exotic flowers. The spa also boasts a mosaic tiled Rasul mud suite, which includes herbal steam and also releases tropical rain. There are two specially designed Thai massage rooms, which come complete with specialist couches, as well as manicure and pedicure chairs. With more than 100 treatments to choose from (specialist Thai massages are top of the list), the spa caters for almost every whim. The leading skincare brand Erb, used exclusively within the spa and launched in Thailand a decade ago, is inspired by ancient Thai herbal remedies and rituals. Centering around herbs, flowers and roots to balance and heal the skin it also promises to improve the well-being of the mind, body and soul.
Ambience: This is not your usual fluffy towelled, nail varnish-strewn girlie-haven. It has, if not a masculine, then a very authentic Asian feel which is remarkable considering its location in the epicentre of London. From the noodle bar upstairs to the brooding décor below, it makes a refreshing change from the clinical spotlit spas that have become the norm. And it’s the kind of retreat that could definitely be enjoyed by men and women alike.
Treatments: Thai Herbal Healer (£72 for 60 minutes)
Among the “mystical” treatments on offer at the spa is the Thai Herbal Healer. This began in true Eastern style with a herbal refresher to drink and a floral foot soak to relax. The treatment itself has been practiced for centuries, and aims to soothe muscle tension and create an air of stillness. It began with warm Thai herbal poultices, or little muslin bags, containing a variety of therapeutic Thai herbs and spices being massaged across my body. These parcels really retained the heat and encouraged me to thoroughly relax. I was then massaged all over using a blend of aromatic oils and just the right amount of pressure – strong yet soothing.
Seven Pollen Facial Care (£80 for 60 mins).
Prior to the treatment I read that “Royal Thai Ladies are famous for their immaculate complexions and have long kept to themselves the secret of their ageless beauty.” The secret, I soon discovered, is a unique blend of the pollen of seven Thai flowers. Totally pure and chemical-free, it is part of the spa’s ‘back to nature’ philosophy. First my skin was thoroughly cleansed using a traditional Thai massage technique which stimulates blood flow and ensures the skin is deeply cleansed, this was followed by a pressure-point massage, and a face mask while I enjoyed a soothing foot rub. With a healthy glow back in my cheeks, I had a deep scalp massage and I was done. Dressed once again I stepped out into the dark Covent Garden streets feeling lighter and brighter as if I had just returned from a proper break and with some Erb poultices to take away I could bring a taste of Thailand home.

TRIED & TESTED: FOOT CREAMS (20.05.11)
Get your feet ready for the summer months ahead, with our pick of intensive foot creams…
BOOTS GORGEOUS FEET DEEPLY INTENSIVE MOISTURISER, £5.10 for 150ml (www.boots.com)
What they say: Boots Gorgeous Feet deeply intensive moisturiser for soft, smooth, rich hydration that lasts 24hrs.
The Results: The packaging isn’t hugely exciting, but I was impressed with the size of the pot. As soon as I sniffed the cream, I was hooked – it has a sweet, summery scent that reminded me of holidays. It made me want to dig out my flip-flops and head to the seaside! The texture is thick and quite indulgent, but I liked the way it felt cooling and soothing as I applied it – it would be ideal on hot summer days. It took a while to absorb, feeling a little sticky for a few minutes, but afterwards my feet felt softer and smoother. The price is great too – I definitely think it’s worth the money.
Best for: Value for money
LISA HOFFMAN SPA BATH HAND & FOOT BUTTER, £27.50 for 50ml (Harvey Nichols Nationwide)
What they say: A thick, rich butter for intense dryness for hands and feet. Rough dry flaky heels and cuticles are deeply conditioned.
The Results: I was thrilled to be handed this product to test. The mint green packaging is both stylish and very innovative. To get the product, you simply push down the top and a large blob of the thick, creamy butter is delivered through a hole. It’s mess-free and really easy to apply. At first, the scent of the product is quite subtle, like baby powder – but as you massage it into feet, the perfume starts to develop. It’s a sophisticated and grown-up scent, with deep floral notes. I loved it and it made applying it a real pleasure. The pot is quite small, so I am alternating it with my usual, more affordable brand – and my feet have never felt softer!
Best for: The fragrance
ESTEE LAUDER MANICURE/PEDICURE TREATMENT, £18.50 for 200ml (www.esteelauder.co.uk)
What they say: Treat your hard-working hands and feet to this intensely hydrating creme. Pampers even the driest skin into kid-glove softness. Rich in concentrated emollients, paraffin and a special moisture retainer. Like a "paraffin dip" spa treatment, it smoothes skin as it eases away dryness and discomfort.
The Results: I’m a big fan of Estee Lauder and this was no disappointment. The cream has a lightweight texture, which felt lovely and cooling as I rubbed it into the soles of my feet. A little goes a long way, so the tube would last throughout the season. The scent is very delicate and would suit everybody – I even discovered my husband applying it to his hands! The best bit about this product is how amazingly soft it left my feet feeling. The skin is rough, dry and in desperate need of a pedicure – but just a little of this cream transformed it and made it feel baby-soft. I would highly recommend it.
Best for: Softening
L’OCCITANE SHEA BUTTER FOOT CREAM, £17.50 for 150ml (http://uk.loccitane.com)
What they say: A prescription for relief and well-being. Contains antiseptic A.O.C. lavender essential oil to purify, and anti-inflammatory arnica extract to help reduce redness and irritation. Refreshing mint cools feet. Enriched with 15% nourishing Shea Butter for exceptional comfort.
The Results: I have very dry feet on my feet and treat myself to monthly pedicures during the summer months to try and keep them looking pretty. During appointments, I try to maintain the smoothness with foot cream – but it needs to be quite intensive to do the job. I wasn’t sure about the scent of this product when I first tested it – the blend of lavender and mint was quite unusual and I wasn’t sure that it worked. After smoothing the thick cream into my feet, however, the overriding scent was mint – and that was lovely and refreshing. It absorbed almost instantly and transformed the hard, rough skin to velvety-softness. I was very impressed. Better still, the results lasted – I only needed to apply it a couple of times a week to maintain the softness.
Best for: Extra Dry Skin
THE BODY SHOP PEPPERMINT INTENSIVE FOOT RESCUE, £9 for 100ml (www.thebodyshop.co.uk)
What they say: First aid for feet! Now with grape acids to work even harder to soften hard skin, while you sleep. Provides an overnight moisture serge to target dry cracked heels so you can wake up to softer, smoother skin.
The Results: I like the idea of applying foot cream, but I’m a busy Mum-of-three and in reality, I would ever remember to do it every day. When I was handed this product to test, I was relieved to discover that I only needed to apply it twice a week, applying it at bedtime. I loved the fresh, minty scent, which would be the perfect antidote to hot, sweaty feet in the summer (I might try and encourage my husband to try it!) The texture is very thick – almost like butter – and it takes a while to massage it into feet. However, it sinks in quickly and leaves rough skin feeling dramatically softer. In the morning, the results were even better – I am very impressed. It’s a great price too and I’ve already been recommending it to friends!
Best for: Busy schedules
COWSHED SANDALWOOD INTENSIVE HAND AND FOOT TREATMENT, £38 for 200ml (www.cowshedonline.com)
What they say: Sandalwood Intensive Hand & Foot Treatment transforms dry hands and hard heels, leaving them soft and supple. Made with sandalwood essential oil, jojoba oil, and vitamin E to deeply hydrate the skin. Enriched with refreshing lemon essential oil to brighten and tone.
The Results: This product looks fantastic, with a stylish green box and heavy glass jar. My first impression was that it would make a lovely gift – I’d be thrilled to unwrap it. The scent isn’t what I was expecting – it’s unusual, with green, woody notes and would be equally appealing to both men and women. The texture of the cream is lightweight and fluffy, reminding me of a mousse. It felt cooling as I applied it and took a few minutes to fully sink into the skin – I didn’t mind that, as in the summer it would feel nice and refreshing. After a week of daily use, my feet are suddenly softer, smoother, and ready be shown off in flip-flops! Although this is a pricey product, I would definitely treat myself again.
Best for: The luxury buy
Blog: STUART JOLLEY - FOUNDER OF WINGMAN – BLOGS ABOUT THE CREATION OF HIS INNOVATIVE DEODORISING WIPES FOR MEN (20.05.11)
I came up with the idea for the Wingman wipe while camping with friends. There were no showers to use at the campsite and we became frustrated using ‘girly’ baby wipes so began discussing alternatives between us. Shortly after this trip I realised there was a gap in the market for a male deodorising wipe, when on a night out clubbing with uni mates, I spotted men wiping their armpits with paper towels to try to mask their body odour!
Once I had come up with the idea I started noticing all the situations where men would use the wipes... The gym, going for drinks after work, for people travelling to freshen up, festivals, clubbing... I just felt like I was really on to something!
My next step was to produce a wipe for men on the go that would revive and refresh. I worked to create a mixture of ingredients that worked together and after trying out different variations I settled on the unique combination of soothing Aloe Vera, cooling peppermint oil and invigorating Ginseng which together effectively remove dirt, oil and bacteria. It was important that the wipes were masculine in size as well as smell, so we’ve made them extra large, which means they do a great job on bodies as well as faces.
My market research tells me that the wipes are really effective and men love having an accessible wipe, that’s quicker and easier than getting in the shower – which isn’t always possible. I have tested the wipes on everyone from army officers, festival goers to busy commuters and the feedback is always positive. Even women have told me that they love the smell and most say that they’re happy because their boyfriends can carry the product round with them, for those hot summer days.
I’m currently featuring in BBC 2’s ‘The Next Big Thing’ series, fronted by Dragon’s Den star Theo Paphitis. It follows me and several other people through the process of developing an idea and getting our products stocked in a major retailer. This has been a massive opportunity for me and the Wingman brand and we’re now stocked in Boots stores across the UK.
The last year and a half has been really hard work, but I’m happy with my product and looking forward to developing the brand in the future. Watch this space!

Editor’s Letter (20.05.11)
I guess it’s all in the job description of a beauty journalist – but I am forever discovering amazing products, swearing I couldn’t live without them, and then promptly forgetting about them when I am sent something new… The test comes when I revisit those products – and if I’m still impressed, that means it’s a real keeper… That happened last week when I stumbled upon the remains of a bottle of Moroccan Oil. I used this product throughout the latter half of 2010 – and recommended to everybody I knew – but it gradually disappeared behind a plethora of new hair masques and treatments. But sure enough - after just one application, my hair transformed back to the silky, hydrated, shiny locks I enjoyed last year. And now? It’s staying very firmly at the front of my dressing table.
Topshop. I can hardly believe it’s been a whole year since Topshop launched its makeup collection – how quickly has that flown! But I’m happy that the anniversary has been marked by the launch of three limited edition metallic nail polishes (£6 each). I was sent Heart of Gold to test – a soft, shimmering gold – and I’m really impressed with its staying power. I painted my long nails four days ago (no top coat) and there isn’t a single chip. Moonshine (rose gold), and Starlight (silver) look just as pretty. www.topshop.com
Naked Truth. I love the fact that the packaging of skincare specialist Dr Darren McKeown’s Naked Truth range is transparently honest about what each product can and can’t achieve. Eager to test out its claims, I slathered the Face Renewal Mask (£21.99) onto skin, which promises to leave skin smooth, soft, and wonderfully radiant. Well, I am impressed… I can honestly say that it delivered all three, leaving my skin feeling like it had enjoyed a luxury facial. I can’t wait to try more products from the range. www.superdrug.com
Aromatherapy Associates. Talking of skincare, another launch I’ve been enjoying testing this week is Aromatherapy Associates’ new Anti Age Introductory Set (£30), which is perfect for travelling. The products will easily last a long weekend – or even a week, if you eek them out carefully. Special mentions must go to the Rich Repair Eye Cream, which is too luxurious and nourishing for words, and the Intensive Skin Treatment Oil, which leaves skin soft and supple. www.aromatherapyassociates.com
Clinique. It’s been on counters a while, but I have just got around to testing Clinique’s new Chubby Stick Moisturising Lip Colour Balm (£14). They look like chunky crayons (always a bonus when you have a stationary obsession like me!) and glide smoothly onto lips, leaving them feeling supple and hydrated. My favourite is Mega Melon; a subtle dusky pink. They don’t last long on lips – but when does a balm ever last long? On the plus side, I’ve been applying mine non-stop and it barely looks like I’ve used it. www.clinique.co.uk
Sun Shots. The trouble with weather like this – baking hot one moment, chilly the next – is that you never know when to stash a bottle of SPF in your handbag. Well, I discovered the perfect solution to that skincare dilemma when Sun Shots (£12.30) landed on my desk last week. The box contains 10 sachets of SPF 25 suncream – each containing enough to cover the entire body. The formula is perfect – it’s thick enough not to slide straight out the sachet, but fluid enough to apply to skin. Genius! www.beautique.com
Feature: OOH LA LA (20.05.11)
The French know a thing or two about looking good… So what are the coolest new brands to make it over the English Channel?
LOVEA
Trust the amorous French to create a brand with a name like this: Lovea. The range of skin, hair and bodycare products are all certified organic and made by a French company called Laboratoires Biocos. You might not have heard of it, but Lovea organic shampoos are top sellers in the French market.
All the products are packed with skin nourishing ingredients. And three of them – Moroccan Argan Oil, Tahitian Monoi and Burkina Shea Butter – form a consistent theme throughout the range. The ecocert organic sunscreen is another top-selling part of the range in France and is becoming a popular choice over here amongst organic fans. Designed for both kids and adults, the formulas combine Tahitian Monoi Oil, a low-level natural sunscreen with stronger mineral sun blocks. The creams are water-resistant and lightly scented with natural essential oils. And the kids range is co-promoted with Disney and each bottle features a different Disney character making it a winner with the small people too...
Try the Lovea Healing Butter, £7.99 (www.planetorganic.com), which is perfect for dry skin. Containing Argan Oil, it nourishes and normalises skin, increasing elasticity and soothing irritation and flakiness. The butter smells sweet and refreshing and is packaged in a super cool, retro tin.
AVÈNE
Aveeno? Avon? No, Avène. It’s one of those brands everyone has kind of heard of but they’re not sure. Eau Thermale Avène was launched in 1990 and has since become the bestselling sensitive skincare brand in French pharmacies. It arrived in the UK in 2000 and has gone from strength to strength – partly due to its popularity amongst those with sensitive skin and partly down to the growth in demand for products with medical properties.
The range is based on the unique Avène Thermal Spring Water, which for hundreds of years has been used to treat sensitive and eczema-prone skin. The water has soothing and anti-irritating properties that have been consistently proven by a vast programme of clinical trials, many of which have been published in international medical and scientific journals. Impressive stuff.
Try Avene’s solution for de-hydrated skin – their Eau Thermale Avène Spring Water, £6.50 (www.boots.com). It’s completely pure and clinically proven to have soothing and anti-irritating properties. Its unique composition is obtained throughout the water’s forty-year journey through the Cévennes Mountains in the South of France, resulting in a naturally bacteriologically pure water with a low mineral content – ideal for even the most sensitive skin. Spritz on to soothe, calm and rehydrate.
KLORANE
Klorane began in 1966 in Castres, southwest France when a young pharmacist with a passion for botany called Pierre Fabre began creating shampoos containing plant active ingredients – an innovative concept for the time. Soon Klorane’s famous shampoo with chamomile was born – and Fabre went on to found Klorane Laboratories itself.
The concept of Klorane Laboratories is simple – it uses one plant to treat one specific hair condition. Whatever the issue, Klorane has a range of natural plant extract products to address common hair dramas be it smoothing, highlighting or nourishing to keep tresses in tip-top condition.
Try Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo with Oat milk, £7.50 (www.johnlewis.com). Not only designed to refresh hair when you’re short of time, this highly effective dry shampoo is great for styling. It’s been used on the likes of Mischa Barton, Chloe Sevigny and Kate Moss to boost volume, lightness and add texture. It also makes hair more pliable – so it’s more responsive to styling tools, whether you are backcombing, teasing or curling your locks. In fact Rob Talty, Britney Spears’ stylist, can’t get enough of it. He used the spray to boost Britney’s volume during shooting of her Circus video, saying: “This stuff is great for preventing flatness and greasiness”. If it’s good enough for her...
ABSOLUTION
After years of experience as a creative director for cosmetic brands, Isabelle Carron wanted to create an organic skincare range that could adapt to skin with effective results, quality ingredients and unique packaging and style. With help from a talented designer, Absolution was born – a luxury organic, bespoke and modern brand. And a unisex one too…
Whether your skin lacks radiance, requires balance, plumping or revitalising, you decide what your skin desires by combining a cream (Crème Absolution) with a choice of concentrated boosters (La Solution +). It sounds a little complicated but actually makes for a simple, yet effective, skincare range. And the products themselves combine certified organic ingredients with minerals and vitamins to provide an active blend to target specific skin concerns.
Try La Solution + Éclat, £47.00 (www.spacenk.co.uk), an organic radiance booster. It contains extract of prickly pear flowers, which have a regenerating, and restructuring action on the skin. Raspberry bush oil, rich in Omega 3 and 6 and Vitamin E, prevents skin ageing and maintains radiance and suppleness. It’s not just the product that’s impressive, either. The airless dispensers allow each product to last up to three years by protecting the formulas from light and air without the need for lots of preservatives. And the graphic design on every container was created by a selection of French artists, each product with its own personality but part of the same recognisable Absolution family. A truly covetable range.
FILORGA
Filorga has been around since 1978, designing and manufacturing injectable medical products and specifically targeting anti-ageing. Prescribed by the greatest medical and aesthetical surgery specialists, the name Filorga has become synonymous with advanced research – and with 30 years of experience, the brand stays constantly in touch with discoveries relating to cellular ageing.
And although Filorga treatments are used every day in aesthetical medical practices in over 40 countries, for those of us who want to experience the technology without the treatments, there is also a range of cosmeceuticals that can be used at home on a day-to-day basis.
Try Neocicca Interventional, £32 (www.houseoffraser.co.uk). It sounds scarily hi-tech but smells like freshly cut roses. Designed to be used after laser, peeling, or injection treatments, it is also designed to soothe general irritations and calm unhappy skin. Smooth on and skin is instantly more comfortable. The space-age silver tube looks great on the bathroom shelf, too.
CLE DES CHAMPS
Clé Des Champs couldn’t sound more French, but this unique brand of luxury beauty products was actually developed in accordance with traditional Chinese medicine, which seeks to harmonise the body and mind with nature. It focuses on the changing seasons, taking into account that each season requires a different approach and a different product.
By paying attention to seasonal changes, Clé Des Champs believes you are able to help yourself restore your inner flow of energy. For example in spring, like the new growth around us, we have much more energy and according to traditional Chinese medicine, the liver and the bladder are weakened. Often, when there is an imbalance, the skin suffers: it has a tendency to become greasy, irritated, and the pores become dilated.
At this time of year, try the Spring/Summer Body Scrub, £54 (www.cledeschamps.co.uk), a refreshing body exfoliator that leaves your skin smooth and silky. The scrub contains poppy flower extract, which has detoxifying and calming properties; anise floral water to soothe irritation and reduce redness of the skin; and bamboo stem extract to gently and naturally exfoliate. Beautiful packaging, too.
Treatment Review: SEASONAL RITUAL SPRING FACIAL TREATMENT AT THE WHITE ROOM, LONDON (13.05.11)
What it promises: This pampering facial encourages deep relaxation, whilst improving elasticity and tone of the skin. It promises to combat the internal and external environmental factors that lead to premature ageing with the use of seasonal extracts within prestigious organic brand Clé des Champs. The range takes its inspiration from traditional Chinese medicine to bring beauty and inner peace by harmonizing links between human beings and the environment. The White Room is the exclusive stockist of the range in the UK.
What happens: I arrived at the White Room, based in Walton Street in Knightsbridge, after a long, tiring day on my feet – and the welcome couldn’t have been warmer. The treatment room had a clean, clinical feel, with white washed walls and splashes of ice blue. The real luxury came when I climbed under the heated duvet and smelt the delicious scents of the Clé des Champs range as my therapist got to work. The treatment would usually start with a foot massage, but I requested it be left out due to an injury (my therapist was more than willing to tailor the treatment). Skin was cleansed and toned with a refreshing Neroli Spray, before a thorough exfoliation using Bamboo and Raspberry extracts to remove dead skin cells. Whilst a White Clay Mask was applied to lift skin (containing extracts of Apricot oils and Jojoba), I enjoyed a blissful pressure point massage, which served to balance my body. And just when I didn’t think things could get any more indulgent, an intense scalp massage helped to ease away any remaining tight knots and stresses.
The Results: This is a long facial at 1 hour and 30 minutes – and despite being so relaxed on the treatment bed that I nodded off several times, I felt energised and totally balanced when I stepped out of the salon after the treatment. I think there’s a lot to be said for tailoring a treatment to a particular season, as our bodies and skin clearly crave different things at different times of the year – and I am more than a little keen to return to the White Room to try the summer-tailored treatment over the coming months. When it came to my skin, I was very impressed. It looked firmer and plumper in the days that followed – and has been positively glowing with health ever since. The Clé des Champs has also really impressed me and I’ve been regularly using it at home. This treatment may be pricey, but it has introduced me to a whole new way of looking after my skin.
Price: £130 for 1 Hour and 30 minutes

Editor’s Letter (13.05.11)
Ever imagined being stranded on a desert island? Well this week, we have asked our regular contributors to imagine that very scenario and share the beauty products, people, and soundtrack they would want with them. We’ve also asked what kind of look they’d be rocking on those exotic beaches – glamorous St Tropez style or laid-back Ibiza chic – and what spa treatments they’d be choosing if they stumbled upon a luxury spa (oh, I can only imagine...) I couldn’t resist having a go myself – so if you haven’t read the feature yet, CLICK HERE - http://www.the-beauty-pages.com/thefeature.php - to get the lowdown on all my summer essentials. And husband, if you are reading this, I would never swap you and the dog for a personal beauty therapist. But it would be very tempting…
Estee Lauder. I spritzed Estee Lauder’s new fragrance Adventurous on my wrists whilst passing through Duty Free this week – and it was love at first sniff. The scent is exclusive to travel retail, so you’ll need to book a flight (or bribe somebody else who is jetting away) to get your hands on a bottle. But believe me, it’s so worth it. The contemporary scent is inspired by adventures and safaris, with notes of jasmine, caramel musk, crushed leaves, and wild patchouli. Spicy, unique, and very wearable – I will definitely be investing in a bottle to wear over the summer months. Estee Lauder travel worldwide.
Yes to Cucumbers. With summer well on its way, my thoughts are turning to products that will help cool and soothe my sensitive skin – and the perfect collection has just landed on my desk. Yes to Cucumbers is the latest range from the brand that brought us Yes To Carrots and Yes To Tomatoes, with products containing organic cucumbers, anti-oxidant rich Green Tea, and moisturising Aloe Vera. My highlight from the skin and bodycare range is the Facial Towelletes (£4.99 for 30), which help skin stay as cool as a cucumber on the go! www.biggreensmile.com
Heaven. I enjoyed a facial last week with products from Deborah Mitchell’s Heaven range. I knew I’d like the products from the moment the Hydro Cleansing Milk (from £12.95) (which includes irresistible notes of rosemary and lavender) was applied to my skin. It felt rich, creamy, and soothing. It wasn’t the only product I was impressed with – I also loved the Orange Flower Cell Renewal (from £12.95) and Bee Venom Mask (from £19.95) (yes, it contains real extracts of venom, but it doesn’t hurt a bit). Afterwards, my skin was glowing. www.heavenbydeborahmitchell.co.uk
Revlon. I tested Revlon’s new CustomEyes Mascara (£9.99) this week, which has an adjustable brush to switch between ‘Length and Definition’ and ‘Length and Drama’ (twist the base of the wand to choose the setting). To test it out, I tried a different setting on each eye. As promised, the first set of lashes had a softer, subtler look – whilst the second had the illusion of increased volume. It’s gimmicky and whether I could be bothered to switch between the two settings remains to be discovered – but if you like multipurpose products, it definitely delivers. Boots and Superdrug Nationwide.
Clinique. If you suffer from eternally dry lips like me (and I say eternally, as I have tried literally everything over the past 30 years to rectify the problem), I would recommend adding Clinique Superbalm Lip Treatment (£10) to your beauty stash. It doesn’t cure dry pouts in the long-run (at least it didn’t for me), but it certainly keeps them feeling suppler, softer and more comfortable for longer than other products I have tried. You only need a tiny bit for each application, so the tube lasts months. www.clinique.co.uk
TRIED & TESTED: TUMMY TONERS (13.05.11)
Tone your stomach with a targeted treatment. We’ve put six to the test…
THALGO FLAT STOMACH, £40.35 (www.thalgo.com)
What they say: A refreshing gel that can be used on the stomach and acts like a corset creating a firmer silhouette. Your stomach is instantly re-sculpted and visibly smoother and firmer.
The results: Still 'feeling the effects' of the birth of my fourth child, I was sceptical (but ever hopeful) to try this cream, which claims to be ‘refining and sculpting’. It has a lovely sea-mineral scent, which I'm always quite seduced by. From the promise on the box that it would surround my abdominal area 'like a corset', I was expecting something that felt quite tight. But the fresh gel is cooling, soothing and a pleasure to apply. I have noticed a real improvement in the texture of my skin, which feels softer and smoother. Can I honestly say my stomach is 'instantly re-sculpted'? No. But I can say it was a treat to use and I feel softer and smoother. And I haven’t used it for long so I’m looking forward to seeing what the longer-term effects are.
Best for: Spa at home
DALY SPA TUMS AND BUMS SILHOUETTE SMOOTHER, £12.00 (www.marksandspencer.com)
What they say: This super blend of moisturising coconut and sweet almond oils combined with a tightening polymer will leave you beautifully hydrated with a noticeably smoother silhouette.
The Results: I don’t usually invest in celebrity ranges, as I’m cynical about how much input they really have in the products. But Tess Daly seems like a pretty ‘real’ woman and I liked her chat on the side of the tube about everyone having something they don’t like about their shape! The cream itself is more gel-like and really cools the skin down. It actually feels quite cold for a few minutes after you put it on, but not unpleasantly so. It smells lovely (I could smell the sweet almond smell all day) and my skin felt soft after just one application. After a couple of weeks I certainly felt more confident in that ‘area’. I think it would be a good one to use before you went on holiday.
Best for: Pre beach holiday
BEAUTICIAN’S SECRET BODY SCULPT, £7.95 (www.activebeauty.co.uk)
What they say: For anyone with sagging skin on their body or dimpled, orange peel skin on the thighs, stomach and buttocks, this cream visibly reduces cellulite and sculpts the body. Orange peel skin is visibly decreased by 33% in just 8 weeks; skin is 27% firmer and more toned in just 8 weeks, and body contours are refined into a more toned silhouette.
The Results: The tube of cream looked slightly old-fashioned in design and it appeared more expensive than it probably is. I was impressed with the statistics and keen to try this on my tummy, as it’s an area I’ve noticed seems to have developed the dimpled effect previously only found on my thighs and bottom. The cream/gel smells great and is cooling (without being uncomfortable) and fresh. It sinks in quickly and isn’t sticky either. I really did notice a smoother, more taught feel to my skin after about two weeks and I’m looking forward to seeing the effects of it after two months. I would definitely buy this again – it’s a great price.
Best for: Budget buy
SILDERM TREATMENT CREAM, £39.95 (www.silderm.com)
What they say: SilDerm has been developed by medical professionals to reduce both the length and the depth of stretch marks, with two active and unique ingredients. It is the only clinically proven treatment for stretch marks and is recommended by doctors.
The Results: I tested this cream at the perfect time – I started using it immediately after I’d given birth and kept using it religiously as my tummy contracted back into shape during the first few weeks. I had some stretch marks and they were red. I was pleased to read that the idea with this cream is that it is used at this stage and can help improve the appearance of the marks as they heal. The cream is pleasant enough to use – you don’t need much and the smell is quite nice. Results-wise, I’m really impressed. Just after I had my baby I couldn’t imagine ever wearing a bikini, but my tummy is really not that bad now and the marks have indeed faded considerably. Well worth the money.
Best for: Post-pregnancy repair
PALMER’S TUMMY BUTTER, £5.35 (www.chemistdirect.co.uk)
What they say: Made with vitamin E, collagen, elastin and soothing lavender, this product penetrates as deep as the dryness and helps restore vital moisture, smoothes marks and tone skin. A highly concentrated formula widely recommended for use during and after pregnancy.
The Results: I like the name of this and the price makes it very appealing. It comes in a screw-top pot that reminds me of the polish my mum used to use for our dining room table! And it’s a similar consistency – solid and slightly waxy. That description might not sound great so far – but in its favour, a little goes a very long way, it’s incredibly good value, and leaves skin feeling very soft. And if you like the cocoa butter smell (which I’m not totally sold on, but that’s just me) you’re onto a winner. Results-wise, my tummy isn’t looking too bad at all. I’m not sure how much of that is down to this product, but it’s very pleasant to use.
Best for: Growing bumps
NIP+FAB TUMMY FIX, £19.25 (www nipandfab.com)
What they say: If you’re in hot pursuit of a flatter, more toned tum and working up a sweat everyday is just not an option, reach for this daily ab toner. Created with a revolutionary formula ‘amarashape’ this clinically proven product will help to tone, smooth, tighten and slim the tummy area.
The Results: I found this a lovely product to use. The packaging is very clean, simple and stylish, which was a good start as I love things to look good on the bathroom shelf! Its cooling gel texture feels very refreshing to apply and it has a great smell. It claims to tone, smooth, tighten and slim the tummy area in six weeks – and it certainly feels like it’s doing that as the skin feels tighter. It’s not performing miracles, but I never expected it to. Overall I think this is a great product and would recommend it to anyone who wants to tone up in that area.
Best for: Beauty junkies
Feature: MY DESERT ISLAND ESSENTIALS (13.05.11)
What beauty products and services would you want at your disposal if you were stranded on a desert island? This week, we’ve asked six contributors to The-Beauty-Pages.com that very question…
ELEANOR TUCKER – Feature Writer for The-Beauty-Pages.com and founder of www.productplacementtheblog.com/
Makeup…
Well, I'd want to look fabulous should anyone arrive to rescue me, but I'd still need an SPF. So I'd go for Perricone's No Foundation Foundation, £45 (www.perriconemd.co.uk). It seems to melt away imperfections, but also delivers anti-ageing benefits and sun protection.
Body…
If I’m going to be forced to hang around in not very much I’d like some help. I’m still recovering from having a baby a couple of months ago so I’d go for Silderm’s Stretch Mark Treatment Cream, £39.95 (www.silderm.com), which claims to reduce marks by acting on them when they are new, which mine definitely are.
Shower…
Being on a desert island could be a bit stressful (imagine not having a wireless connection?) so I’d like a calming shower in that waterfall. I’d go for EO’s French Lavender Shower Gel, £12 (www.forever-natural.co.uk), which smells divine and lasts ages.
Haircare…
My hair would suffer from all that sun, sea and sand, so I’d have to call in the cavalry in the shape of Joico K-PAK Deep-Penetrating Reconstructor, £14.95 (www.hqhair.com).
Laid-back or glamorous beach look?
Definitely laid-back! With my curly hair (don’t be fooled by the blow-dry in the photo) I couldn’t possibly achieve glam. And I’m a flip-flop wearer at heart, even if I do live in the frozen north...
Companion…
I’d leave the kids at grandma’s and take my husband. He makes me laugh and he can sing too, so that would be the entertainment sorted.
Soundtrack…
No question – The Stone Roses by The Stone Roses.
Essential spa treatment…
A pedicure. I love looking down at perfectly polished toes in flip-flops. (I’m pretty shallow like that...)
Would you want to stay forever?
Can I give it a try for a few weeks and see? I’ll meet you at the airport in a couple of hours...
ABBY KNIGHT – CELEBRITY HEALTH AND BEAUTY WRITER.
Makeup…
This would have to be Too Faced Caribbean in a Compact, £22 (www.lookfantastic.com). Just the thing to kick start my desert island tan, this neat little compact with mirror contains the best shade of bronzer I’ve ever used: not too dark and never orange, just one sweep and you look perfectly sun-kissed. If I’m allowed a brush I’d use it on my shoulders and décolleté too.
Haircare…
I first used Morroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream, £22.85 (www.lookfantastic.com), during a two-week break to Mexico and its ability to bring back salon-condition lushness has never been bettered. It’s great at eliminating frizziness - no doubt a big problem on a humid desert island – and I love the soft hold and texture it gives hair, plus the yummy fragrance.
Shower…
The clever skincare experts at Caudalie know how to harvest all the best bits from grapes to help smooth and condition skin and their Fleur De Vigne Shower Gel, £9 (www.boots.com) is no exception. It lathers gently – I’d just need to find a natural water fall to activate the pH balanced ingredients – and leaves skin feeling wonderfully soft and clean. The fresh scent comes from the vine flower that only blooms in June, which makes it extra special.
Bodycare…
This would have to be Korres Vanilla Cinnamon Body Milk, £9.50 (www.bathandunwind.com). Made by Greek skin care experts who know a thing or two about skin in the sun, this rich body cream contains a whole host of skincare goodies including jojoba oil and aloe vera that help protect the skin from dehydration and supports its immune system so it really does stay feeling soft and supple. I’d smooth it over my skin at sunset and let the natural ingredients work while I slept under a palm tree.
Laid-back or glamorous beach look?
I’d like to think I could abandon my straigtheners and live on the beach all summer long, but I’m more likely to be a combination of both: laid-back enough to kick off my shoes in the sand and give my feet a natural pedicure, but with my high factor sun cream and Prada sunglasses never too far away.
Companion…
This is a tough one… Johnny Depp could just drop by on one of those galleons he sails so well and share a rum cocktail or two under the stars – or I could sneak on Robert Pattinson and make sure he had enough sun-cream to protect that oh-so porcelain skin. I also find it hard to resist Orlando Bloom’s luscious curly locks which would look fab under a bandana… The list goes on.
Soundtrack…
Rhianna’s Loud would keep me upbeat while I went about my desert island tasks – it would also make you feel as if a party was going on, but I’d sleep under the stars listening to the sparkly tracks on Ellie Golding’s Bright Lights, which would make me feel all dreamy and happy in an instant.
Essential spa treatment…
It would have to be a Hot Stone Therapy treatment, from around £50, that uses hot stones to provide a deep muscle massage that ensures all those niggles from swimming, fishing for food every day, and building my very own beach hut were ironed out.
LUCY QUICK – Freelance Beauty Writer and contributor to The-Beauty-Pages.com
Makeup…
I'd definitely want Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Brick, £30.50 (www.bobbibrown.co.uk) so that I could give my face and décolletage a golden glow after a day of sunbathing.
Bodycare…
It might not be that glamorous, but my favourite body product is Johnson's Baby Oil, £2.85 (www.boots.com). I use it daily and it keeps my skin smooth and moisturised - plus it's perfect for applying to skin after a day in the sunshine.
Shower…
Soap and Glory Clean on Me Shower Gel, £5.11 (www.boots.com) smells like utter heaven. I cant live without it, so it'd be high on my list of things to take onto my desert island. It cleans skin and leaves it laced with just a hint of fragrance.
Haircare…
Without doubt, it would be Batiste Dry Shampoo £2.35 (www.boots.com)! I Couldnt survive without a couple of hundred cans of the stuff! Smells fantastic and totally gets rid of greasy locks to leave you with fresh, clean looking hair!
Laid-back or glamorous beach look?
I'd definitely go for a glamorous St. Tropez look!
Companion…
I'd take my gorgeous bloke, but I wouldn’t want to stay forever – there’s only so much sunbathing a girl can do!
Soundtrack…
We'd listen to anything by The National as we chilled out on our boat!
Essential Spa Treatment…
If there happened to be a spa on my desert island, I'd opt for a nourishing wrap to give my skin an injection of much-needed moisture.
LOUISE EMMA CLARKE – Founder of The-Beauty-Pages.com, freelance beauty journalist and copywriter.
Makeup…
I’m pretty low maintenance when it comes to makeup in the summer months. Once my complexion gets a bit of colour (and I really do mean ‘a little’, as I’m never going to boast a Caribbean glow), I just want a bit of concealer to cover dark circles or blemishes. My current favourite is Clarins Concealer Stick, £17 (http://uk.clarins.com)
Bodycare…
With this fair skin, I’m not going to get away with a stint on a desert island without generous applications of SPF. My favourite will always be Nivea – for the protection, silky texture, and feel-good scent - so I’d pack Nivea Sun Protect and Bronze SPF 30 and SPF 50, £14.80 each (www.boots.com)
Haircare…
I wouldn’t need much – just a good shampoo and conditioner. Paul Mitchell Instant Moisture Daily Shampoo, £7.15, and Daily Treatment, £9.60 (www.lookfantastic.com), contain UV filters to protect locks in the sunshine.
Shower…
I adore Aromatherapy Associates’ Shower Oils – so I’d treat myself to the Miniature Bath & Shower Oil Collection, £28.50 (www.aromatherapyassociates.com), so I could pick the oil that suited my mood at the end of each day. They’re great for hydrating sun-kissed skin and smell incredible.
Laid-back or glamorous beach look?
A combination – bikini and flip-flops for the day; maxi dresses and long boho-style necklaces for the evenings (but it always needs to be comfortable).
Companion…
I’d take my husband, a mountain of magazines, and our dog Lily (otherwise life could get a little lazy).
Soundtrack…
I wouldn’t need music – there are few sounds more relaxing than the sea crashing onto the shore.
Essential Spa Treatment…
Here’s where I get greedy, as I couldn’t possibly pick just one… I’d start with a reviving massage (as lets face it, the flight over there would probably be a long one), then move onto a gel manicure and pedicure, and finish with a long, pampering, hydrating facial. And if there wasn’t a spa on the island, I’d happily swap the husband and dog for a personal therapist… (sorry, but it’s pretty essential).
ASTRID MITCHISON - Feature Writer for The-Beauty-Pages.com and founder of http://skindeepbeautyblogger.blogspot.com/
Makeup…
I tend to keep my makeup pretty minimal in the summer, eschewing foundation in favour of a lighter tinted moisturiser and a dab of concealer where needed. I love Heaven Silk Skin Tinted Moisturiser, £28.95 (www.heavenbydeborahmitchell.co.uk), so that would definitely come with me.
Bodycare…
You can't beat pure aloe vera gel for soothing skin following sun exposure. I keep a tube in the fridge at all times for additional cooling benefits. I also really like Crabtree & Evelyn's Aloe Vera Hydrating Body Wash, £12 (www.crabtree-evelyn.co.uk) which I've been using every summer in recent years.
Haircare…
I have a laid-back attitude to styling my hair in the summer and often leave it to dry naturally. I have long hair and I've developed a bit of an obsession with maintaining the condition. I swear by La Biosthetique products and use their UV Protector, £19.21 (www.theshampooshop.com) when I'm going to be in the sun, in addition to covering up with a hat.
Essential Spa Treatment…
My favourite spa treatment is Crystal Clear Microdermabrasion, but you need to be careful in the sun afterwards – so I'd choose a hydrating facial or a pampering mani-pedi. Less indulgent, but a branch of Ministry of Waxing would probably come in handy too!
Laid-back or glamorous beach look?
My look is very casual in the summer- if there's a necessity to wear more than a bikini, I'll most likely throw on a maxi dress – but by evening, I like to up the glam factor and there's invariably some sort of metallic accessory accompanying my outfit.
Companion…
Of course, it's nice to share these experiences with a loved one or friends – particularly when it comes to cocktails and fresh BBQ fish in the evening – but by day, I'm pretty happy to entertain myself so long as I have an iPod (old school rock and laid-back summer tunes) and a good book. My guilty pleasure is to replace my standard reading material with mindless chick-lit on holiday.
CLAIRE BRAYFORD – Deputy Fashion Editor of Daily Express and contributor to The-Beauty-Pages.com
Makeup…
I’d take Guerlain Terracotta Light Sheer Bronzing Powder, £33.50 (www.johnlewis.com) – it’s the only one that works on my pale skin in the sun. If I’m allowed a few more, I’d also pack Lancome ARTLINER, £19.90 (www.lancome.co.uk), a liquid liner that doesn’t run and is super easy to apply, and Dior Serum de Rouge, £25 (www.boots.com), a lip treatment with SPF20 to protect my lips from the drying sunshine.
Bodycare…
I’d take a bottle of He-Shi Foaming Mousse Fake Tan, £27 (www.he-shi.eu) to give me a 70s-style tan without the wrinkles or the streaks.
Shower…
Hermes 24 Faubourg Shower Cream, £44.87 (www.thebeautyparlour.co.uk) so I could waft in my favourite scent every day.
Haircare…
I’d apply Kerastase Lait Chroma Reflect, £18.65 (www.lookfantastic.com) to reflect the light away from my coloured hair - and I’d wear a big hat or silk scarf. Hair takes such a long time to recover from the sun and coloured hair is even more delicate.
Laid-back or glamorous beach look?
It’s got to be a glamorous St Tropez look – Pucci print kaftans, jeweled sandals and oversize accessories including hat, shades and beach bag. It’s so much fun to dress up on holiday – you can be much more adventurous and wear all the prints and colours you would never normally at home. Stylepassport.com is my new favourite holiday shop for all my packing needs.
Companion…
Someone with a plane or boat to take me home so I wasn’t stranded – Richard Branson?
Soundtrack…
Radio 4 so I could listen to what was happening at home. All other music would bore me after a while.
Essential Spa Treatment…
An everlasting manicure and pedicure, so I didn’t have to worry about my nails in this season’s must have yellow by Chanel.
Treatment Review: COSMETIC MOLE REMOVAL, MEDICETICS, LONDON (06.05.11)
What it promises: Whether you want a mole removed because you feel self-conscious or because you are worried about it – London-based clinic Medicetics is the place to head. The simple, safe, and surprisingly quick procedure is carried out by an experienced doctor – and whether the mole is on your face or body, the clinic promises an excellent cosmetic result and no scarring. To be on the safe side, all moles are sent away to be analysed, with patients receiving results within three weeks. And a follow-up appointment at the clinic is offered four weeks after the initial procedure.
What happens: I have felt self-conscious about a mole for years – and despite having it checked by a dermatologist and being told it was perfectly normal, I wanted it removed as soon as I found out about the quick, painless procedure that Medicetics offered. That didn’t stop me feeling apprehensive as I walked into the sleek, stylish reception area of the clinic on London’s Connaught Road – the human mind always exaggerates these things and I was expecting it to be complicated and painful… How wrong I was! After a quick consultation with Dr Geoffrey Mullan, whose warm, relaxed manner instantly put me at ease, I was lead into the surgery (which makes it sound far more daunting than it was) and asked to hop onto the bed. The only pain I felt throughout the whole procedure came next, as a local anaesthetic was injected into the area to be treated. Within 60 seconds, I was told that the mole had been removed – and I hadn’t felt a thing! Dr Mullan had used a laser to remove it and the procedure was completed in matter of seconds. After application of a couple of plasters (yes, that was all that was necessary), I strolled out onto the streets of London barely 15 minutes after I had arrived.
The Results: I am absolutely thrilled with the result and wish I had found out about the procedure earlier. It bled slightly on the first day, but the wound had started to heal by the next morning – and it wasn’t painful at all. Six weeks later and the only evidence of the mole is a pale red mark – which I am assured will fade over the next 12 months to nothing. I can recommend Dr Mullan and the Medicetics team wholeheartedly – and I will definitely be heading back to the clinic in the future for the range of other cosmetic procedures on offer.
Price: From £195 to £285.
Location: Medicetrics, 37 Connaught Street, Hyde Park, London W2 2AZ. 0207 4022022. www.medicetics.com/
Medicetics specialises in anti-aging and advanced cosmetic procedures including Botox, peels, fillers and laser hair removal and photo facials, as well as mole removal. Dr Mullan is an experienced facial surgeon.
TRIED & TESTED... NAIL ART PRODUCTS (06.05.11)
Feeling creative? We’ve put six nail art products to the test…
BARRY M INSTANT NAIL EFFECTS IN WHITE FROST, £3.99 (www.barrym.com)
What they say: What looks like an ordinary nail paint is in fact a little bottle of magic. Nail Effects creates a different patterned effect every time you paint your nails. Simply apply it over your basic colour and abracadabra- stripes and different patterns will appear!
The Results: I’ve heard a lot about crackle effect nail polishes recently, but this was my first chance to try one. I chose the white colour and decided to paint it over a bright blue base to hint at a sky theme. I found it really quick and easy to use, so it’s a great product for those who lack the skill or patience to be creative with their nails. I loved watching the effect take place - it does happen quite quickly so you need to move fast. The great thing about this paint is that the pattern disguises any flaws so you don’t need a perfectly steady hand. I could get away with the odd chip, whereas I’d normally redo my manicure at the first sign of imperfection. I can’t wait to try the other colours - pink, blue and black - in the range!
Best for: Quick results
OPI NAIL APPS IN STARS ALIGN, £13.80 (www.lenawhite.co.uk)
What they say: Whether it’s cute Hearts that whet your app-etite, or va-va-voom Tigress print, OPI guarantee you’ll find the nail art that best represents you. Simply fix your chosen design to your nail and file to size et voila! A beautiful, designer manicure accomplished from the comfort of your own home- no more waiting around for your nails to dry!
The Results: I’ve never been that interested in nail art – but when I saw the Rock & Roll Stars Align design from OPI, it quickly changed my mind. It seems odd to me that the pack contains sufficient for 16, not 20, nails but I rather like the idea of trying this as an accent nail, particularly for occasions when I want a more subtle nod to the trend. I was surprised at how easy the apps were to apply and how professional the results looked. I’d have preferred the results to last a little longer a day or so, especially as you only get one full manicure from the pack – but having said that, it’s far cheaper than a salon manicure so I’d definitely consider using them again for a special occasion.
Best for: Luxury choice
NAILEASE INSTANT MANICURE STRIPS IN BLACK, RED WHITE LEOPARD, £5.99 (Boots nationwide)
What they say: Say goodbye to waiting, with the new innovative Nailease Instant Manicure - 100% real nail varnish delivered with zero drying time. A must for any nail fashionista, with over 25 nail polish shades plus on-trend patterns and a French manicure available, you’ll be able to hit those catwalk trends within minutes!
The Results: I usually opt for nude shades or a French manicure - so when I was told about Nailease Instant Manicure, I wasn’t convinced it would be for me. I tried the Black, Red & White Leopard Print, something I’ve never dreamed of applying to my nails before! I couldn’t believe how easy the strips were to apply – I just needed to stick them to nails and file down to size using the nail file included in the set. It was so quick – especially as it takes away the need for base and top coats. I also loved that there was no drying time. The only downside is that I found tip wear worse than with regular polish – but given how quickly they can be applied, this didn’t really bother me.
Best for: Beginners
CINA NAIL ART FRUIT SALAD KIT, £5.99 (www.sallyexpress.com)
What they say: Block colours, fruit prints and jungle prints will be adorning the high streets this summer – so make sure you match your nails to your clothes and accessories. For the ultimate fruity beauty look, apply Cina Nail Art Fruit Salad, which includes tiny fruit shaped nail art stickers.
The Results: I’m not adventurous with bright colours on my hands, but I love experimenting with different shades on my toe nails - so when I set eyes on these adorable decorations, I couldn’t wait to give them a go! The pack contains 10 small cut-outs of each fruit to attach to nails, including watermelon, kiwi, apple, citrus, starfruit and strawberry slices. The cut-outs need to be applied to dry polish and they are also fairly fiddly – so the look can’t be achieved in a hurry. Once on my nails, I applied a top coat and used the provided orange stick to reposition. I was very impressed at how long the effects lasted - the decorations remained secure long after my polish started to show signs of wear.
Best for: Summer
MODELS OWN ASOS EXCLUSIVE NAIL ART PEN AND SPRING POLISH SET, £8 (www.asos.com)
What they say: Joining forces with London nail salon, WAH, the nail art pen has a dual application system. The fine line brush is ideal for creating strokes and lines, while the thin nib pen can be used to create more intricate animal print designs. The pen also comes with a fine wire top to ensure the nib does not get blocked with nail polish.
The Results: I’ve tried a few nail art kits already, but I was excited to try the WAH & Models Own set, which includes a pastel blue polish called Baby Blues in addition to the WAH pen. The brush is unusually long and requires a steady hand. My favourite way to use the pen was with the nib, allowing me to be more creative. I started off with a simple, easy-to-achieve polka dot style – and had fun experimenting with different designs as my confidence increased. At £8 for the set including polish, I think this is a great value for money.
Best for: Creativity
NAIL ROCK IN METALLIC RED, £6.65 (www.nailrock.com)
What they say: Nail Rock designer nail wraps introduce the latest additions to the range. The new designs last up to seven days on nails and eight weeks on toes, with each at home nail treatment taking just 15 minutes to apply. Unlike polish they won’t chip or stain the nail and no drying time is required.
The Results: There’s a really extensive range of designs, so it was hard to pick – but I opted for a metallic, as it gives an effect that could never be achieved with polish. I liked the packaging, which features a bold, fashion led design on the front. The application method was a little different than I’ve experienced before, as you have to heat the wraps using a hairdryer. This made the process a bit of a faff – but given that you don’t have to wait for the colour to dry, I’d say it’s still a little quicker than a standard manicure. I didn’t have high hopes for the lasting effects of the metallic shade, so was pleasantly surprised to note that it lived up to its claims of seven chip-free days. Impressive!
Best for: Lasting effects
Feature: HAIR TODAY, GONE TOMORROW… (06.05.11)
As the weather hots up and hemlines rise, we’ve investigated the best hair removal products and treatments to keep you fuzz-free for summer…
What is it? LASER HAIR REMOVAL, THE LASTER TREATMENT CLINIC, HARLEY STREET (0207 307 8712)
Who does it suit? Laser Hair Removal offers a more permanent (and, of course, more costly) solution to hair removal. It’s important to pick a clinic that you can trust - and those that offer Advanced Intense Pulsed Light technology (one of the few systems that is clinically proven and approved by the FDA for permanent hair reduction of facial and body hair) are a safe bet. This sophisticated procedure targets the melanin found naturally in the hair shaft and hair follicle. Each pulse of light causes the temperature within the hair shaft and hair follicle to rise. When the temperature reaches around 65-70C, the protein of the hair cells and surrounding follicle is destroyed – so theoretically, the hair can’t grow again. Perfect for those who want to pay a little extra for longer-lasting results.
What our tester said: “I have really dark hair because I’m half Greek, so I really dread revealing my legs in the summer. Remembering to shave my legs everyday is time-consuming and boring – and the only alternative is to cover up. This treatment is more than I’d usually choose to pay, but my last appointment was over three weeks ago and still don’t have a single hair on my leg. I’ve been told I can expect them to be hairless for up to three months – it’s incredible. The treatment was uncomfortable and felt like elastic bands snapping on my legs, but it wasn’t hugely painful and I’ll definitely consider doing it again.” Alex, 28
What is it? BENEFIT HOT WAX, FROM £16 (BENEFIT STORES NATIONWIDE)
Who does it suit? Benefit launched their Brow Bars two years ago in London stores - and have now rolled them out across the UK, with many also offering other waxing services, such as bikini, leg and underarm. The treatments use hot wax, which is far gentler, as it rips the hair from the root without removing a layer of skin. It’s a no frills service, but the beauticians are friendly – and a typical brow wax only takes 15 minutes, so it’s perfect if you are time-poor. If you do have slightly red brows, they’ll offer a makeover so you won’t have to head back to the office red-faced!
What our tester said: “Two days before my holiday, I nipped to Benefit on my lunch break and had my eyebrows waxed. It was easy, painless and – best of all – quick. My beautician was friendly and explained exactly what she was doing – the hot wax meant it didn’t hurt nearly as much as strip waxes I’ve tried before and I left with a really defined shape. I’ve recommended this treatment because of the ease and the value for money. Plus a month later my brows still look sharp!” Hannah, 31
What is it? BRAUN SILK-EPIL 7 DUEL EPILATOR, £159.99 (www.boots.com)
Who does it suit? Epilating is becoming an increasingly popular way of removing hair. Not surprisingly when you consider that it offers the smooth, long lasting effects of waxing, without the frustrating days in between to allow for re-growth. This brand new appliance is the first to combine epilation and shaving – with the epilator removing hair from the root and the Venus blade sweeping away the stubborn hairs in one stroke (as short as 0.55cm!). It might seem pricey, but it’s a wise investment if you regularly head to a salon for waxing, as it’ll save you fortune in the long run.
What our tester said: “I was initially quite shocked by the price of this epilator – but when I thought about how much I’d spent on leg and bikini waxes in the past few years, it pales in comparison. It looks sleek and has a fantastic non-slip grip, so I can use it in the shower and it actually WORKS! The epilator removed all the hairs from my legs and then the razor slid over the stubborn ones that wouldn’t budge. What I’m most impressed with is the massaging rollers, which made the epilating less painful – it’s also proven to reduce ingrown hairs by 50%. I’m impressed.” Sharon, 44
What is it? GILLETTE VENUS EMBRACE, £8.49 (www.superdrug.com)
Who does it suit? There are many different ways to tackle hair removal, but shaving is still the most popular method – and the new Venus Embrace from Gillette is the most technologically advanced razor yet. It practically shaves your legs for you, with five curve-hugging blades that are positioned close enough to adjust to the curves of your body. Better still, the protective moisture ribbon targets every hair, leaving legs irresistibly smooth. The soft grip handle improves control, even when wet.
What our tester said: “Call me old-fashioned, but I’ve never been a fan of waxing, I find epilating too painful, and laser hair removal is just too expensive. Give me a good old razor any day – especially if it’s Gillette. We’ve had a long relationship and they never let me down. This razor is quick and easy to use - and my legs didn’t feel dry afterwards, thanks to the moisture strip (which admittedly is most effective for the first few shaves). It even comes with a hand ShowerPod holder to stick on the wall for convenient access. It’s great value for money too – I would recommend it.” Jess, 36
What is it? VEET IN-SHOWER HAIR REMOVAL CREAM, £10.47 (www.boots.com)
Who does it suit? Veet’s unique in-shower cream is designed to dissolve slowly on contact with water, so it’s ideal for those who never seem to have enough hours in the day to deal with hair-removal. Before showering, apply the cream evenly to skin using the coloured side of the dry sponge. Once applied, wait for one minute before stepping into the shower – and make sure the cream stays on your skin for an additional two minutes while showering. Then simply massage the white side of the sponge in a circular motion over skin to remove hair, along with remaining traces of cream. Rinse skin thoroughly under the shower after use.
What our tester said: “It’s been a long time since I’ve tried a hair removal cream – and it seems they are a lot more advanced these days! I loved the fact that there are different types for different skin types; Aloe Vera and Vitamin E for Sensitive Skin, Lotus Milk and Jasmine for normal skin, and New Suprem’ Essence for dry skin. The only negative is the smell – it’s nowhere near as bad as creams I’ve tried in the past, but there’s still a faint odour. It’s a minor complaint and I could definitely live with it.” Jackie, 47
What is it? HAIR REMOVAL MITTS, £1.99 (www.marksandspencer.com)
Who does it suit? These mitts are worn like a sleeve on fingers – and are designed to be used in small circular movements (never up and down) to remove hair from legs. They’re great for holidays, as they’re lightweight and easy to use – and would work well as a top-up hair remover in between waxes.
What our tester said: “I was really sceptical about these mitts, as they just look like socks for your hands and I failed to see how that could remove the hair from my legs. I followed the instructions and my legs did feel smoother, but they definitely weren’t ‘hair-free’. They are cheap and might be effective if you’re in a hurry, but I couldn’t get over the feeling I was sandpapering my legs. Plus the hair that was removed was back within two days. Take my advice and spend a little more, it’s worth it!’ Pia, 34
Editor’s Letter (06.05.11)
On Wednesday, I attempted to pull a door right over the top of my foot – not on purpose you understand, that would be sadistic – but I have two rather nasty black toenails nonetheless. I am now left to wait and see whether I’m going to lose the nails. This is not a situation that I am familiar with – so I consulted my sister, who has lost a few toenails in the past, as she loves a half-marathon. She informs me that if the nails do fall off, a new nail will grow underneath – but it’ll take months. It’s not all bad news – as she was able to create the illusion of a nail by painting onto the skin of the nail bed instead, which makes me feel sick and horrified in equal measure. And as we are enjoying warm weather, with my feet revealed in flip-flops, this is worrying stuff. Suddenly I am staring at every other girl’s beautifully pedicured toes (and they are probably staring at mine in horror). I know there are far more important things to worry about than my toe nails – but if you have a moment, do spare them a thought over the coming week…
The White Company. Fans of The White Company should head straight to their nearest store, as the company has just released a new room scent for summer; Driftwood (from £12) – and it’s my favourite yet... As you can imagine from the stylishly simplistic store, the scent is light, refreshing, and evocative. With Bay, Samphire, and Sea Salt, it’s like breathing in the scent of the seaside (for me, it brings back memories of of childhood days spent playing on Sussex beaches). Pick from Scent Diffuser, Room Spray, or Scented Candle (my favourite). www.thewhitecompany.com
Shiffa. I spend a lot of my time in Dubai – so a product range that hails from the desert state is always going to grab my attention. I started using Shiffa Dubai Tamanu Moisturising Cream (£69) a few weeks ago - and I’m impressed. It’s very rich – my skin laps it up after time spent by the pool, so it’s ideal for rehydrating skin on holiday - and it has an exotic, indulgent scent of frankincense, rosehip and calendula that reminds me of luxury spas in the region. After a few weeks, my skin feels a lot softer (not dissimilar to the feeling after a facial) and has an even, smooth tone. www.shiffa.com
By Terry. I haven’t had a chance to try By Terry’s Teint Terrybly Soleil SPF 15 (£61.50) yet – but I am itching to get my hands on it. The powder foundation boasts what is described as a ‘push up effect’ – to warm up your tan and leave skin looking matte and velvety. Pores and imperfections are hidden, but there isn’t a hint of heaviness – it sounds and looks divine. Better still, it comes in two shades (quite rare with bronzers) – one to enhance pale complexions and the other to even out skin that is already tanned. www.spacenk.co.uk
Dove. My favourite bottle of Good Works shower gel ran out this week (I know, a bad week by all accounts), so I headed to the supermarket to buy a replacement. I picked the best of what appeared to be a pretty uninspiring bunch, settling for Dove Triple Moisturising Body Wash (£3.26). I’m aware that this product has been around for years – but this is the first time I’ve tried it, and readers I am hooked... Not only does it smell rich and indulgent, but it contains a quarter moisturising cream, which leaves my skin feeling soft and supple. Sometimes simple is best – and in this case, it really rings true. www.boots.com
Frais. I really like the look of this Pocket Hand Sanitizer by Frais (£2.75), which is a far cry from the sterile-looking bottles sold in chemists. The packaging looks stylish and luxurious – and it promises to scent hands with a pleasant citrus scent (rather than that alcoholic zing we are used to!) thanks to Grapefruit Extract, Lemon Myrtle, Basil Oil, Tangerine Oil, Ginger Extract, and Orange Peel Extract. And as it’s 66% natural alcohol, it promises to kill 99.9% of germs encountered in everyday life. A winner in my books! www.cultbeauty.co.uk
Blog: BOURJOIS MAKEUP ARTIST CASSIE LOMAS DISCUSSES KATE MIDDLETON’S BRIDAL MAKEUP (06.05.11)
My advice for anyone wanting makeup tips for their wedding day has always been that you should aim to look like yourself, but a more polished version. It’s always best to avoid trends and go for a classic look that will prove timeless in your wedding photos in years to come.
This is exactly the approach Kate seemed to have had with her own makeup. It’s rumoured she applied her makeup herself - and she did it well.
Unlike a lot of brides, Kate didn’t try anything out of the ordinary for her big day. She just did what she normally does for public appearances, but with greater emphasis. A look that she is obviously most comfortable with.
Her eyes were defined with her signature smoky khol lined look but with a heavier more intense application, framed by well defined eyebrows and lashes that looked natural and not false, generously coated with a volumising mascara. Her complexion was the right balance between radiance and matt, hence a glowing complexion without shine. Cheeks were defined with a more prominent rose pink shade of blush and a toning lip colour that lasted the distance throughout the day. Her nails were subtly enhanced with a creamy neutral nail shade with a hint of pink
All in all Kate looked stunning – a classically beautiful bride.
