Blog: A DAY IN THE LIFE OF CELEBRITY HAIR STYLIST LEO BANCROFT (26.11.10)
07.00 – Wake up bright and early in my hotel and get ready quickly as I need to be on the set of Channel 4’s new reality programme Wedding House where I am the resident hair stylist.
08.00 – A driver arrives to pick me up and take me to the filming location - a gorgeous country manor in Kent.
08.30 – Spend time in make up having my own makeup done, I hate this bit but it’s necessary for the lighting or you can end up looking like a ghost on TV.
09.00 – I meet the first lovely couple and spend time chatting to them about what theme they are choosing for the day and what kind of hairstyles they would like. This is one of my favourite parts of my job, as I love getting to know new people.
10.00 – While the couple are shown around the venue I plan the style I am going to create and work with our stylist, Carol, and makeup artist, Liz, to ensure we all have similar ideas about the bride’s overall look. I also prepare my workstation; I will be working with a lot of Balmain extensions and Shu Uemura products so I need to be organised to ensure the hair is ready in time.
11.15 – It’s time to style the first bride’s hair, she has opted for an outrageous Alice and Wonderland theme. I want to create a style that is in fitting with the theme but is also beautiful and appropriate for a bride so I chose a bouffant beehive style. To keep in line with the theme I leave the hairstyle unpolished and messy, and use lots of clip in extensions for mega volume. The wedding is at 12pm and we are running late, it’s a mad frenzy to get the hair finished in time but I manage it and she looks beautiful.
12.00 – I watch the couple’s ceremony and it’s really fun and individual. They seem really in love and the ceremony goes well.
13.30 – As the couple set off for their reception, I rush back upstairs to prepare for the next bride. The theme is Moulin Rouge so we are going for super glam and sultry.
15.30 – The Moulin Rouge wedding is fantastic; the bride and groom sing their way down the aisle and although the groom is a little emotional, they make it through the day.
16.00 – I grab a quick bite to eat and get ready for the journey home. I call the salon to check how everyone is - I hate being away from the salon for so long; I miss the atmosphere and all of the team.
16.30 – Whilst in the car I check my Facebook and Twitter and update them both, I am absolutely addicted to Twitter and update it constantly throughout the day! It’s such a good way of keeping in touch with everyone.
6.00 – At last I am home in time to spend the evening with my beautiful wife and children, we eat dinner together and have a catch up about the mad day I have had.
9.00 – I’m in bed early as I have a busy day in the salon tomorrow; Abbey Clancy is coming in to have her extensions done first thing. No rest for the wicked!
Treatment Review: !QMS MEDICOSMETICS DEEP CLEANSING INTENSE TREATMENT (26.11.10)
What it promises: This deep pore cleansing treatment includes an algae mask, which firms and hydrates the skin. Skin is left clearer, more radiant, and younger looking.
What happens: !QMS Medicosmetics’ new flagship salon is based a short stroll from London’s fashionable Kings Road. With a bright, airy reception area, it has the ambience of a luxury clinic – and the treatment rooms are just as appealing. Once nestled beneath a fluffy towel on the treatment bed, the facial began with a thorough cleanse, whilst a stream of warm steam was directed towards my skin. After a few extractions – never the most enjoyable experience, but it was over very quickly – the therapist applied an exfoliator and massaged it into my skin. It tingled slightly, but was not uncomfortable. She then moved onto a blissful pressure-point massage, covering shoulders, neck, décolletage, and face. At this point, a cooling gel mask was applied to my face, which dried over the next 10 minutes so it could be pulled off in one movement. The treatment concluded with an application of rich moisturiser and eye cream.
The Results: My skin was a little red when the treatment ended, but the colour went down within half an hour and my complexion was glowing! My skin felt smooth and soft – and it was breakout-free in the weeks that followed. At the end of the facial, the therapist showed me the mask that she’d pulled off, as it reveals where lines and wrinkles are on the complexion – I could see that the majority of fine lines were on my neck and was advised to moisturise it twice daily. I would really recommend this treatment!
Price: £90 for 60 minutes

Editor’s Letter (26.11.10)
Ladies and gents, the festive season is nearly upon us… I can hardly believe that my next Editor’s Letter will be at the beginning of December – and I am starting to panic about getting all my Christmas shopping done already! If you feel the same, there is no need to stress… From 1st December, subscribers to The-Beauty-Pages.com will find a series of ‘Christmas Gift Guide’ emails hitting their inbox. Each will list 10 gift ideas – with a beauty theme, of course – and will include a ‘Buy It Now’ button, so you can click and go… I hope you enjoy my festive selections – and please do email me on editor@the-beauty-pages.com to let me know what you think. In the meantime, enjoy the last few days of November!
Moroccan Oil. Readers, I have a new favourite product. Step forward Moroccan Oil (£29.95). This miracle hair treatment has received no shortage of positive reviews over recent months – but I didn’t think it would work on my long, fine hair. So imagine my surprise when I smoothed it through my hair after washing, blow-dried as usual, and was rewarded with the shiniest, softest, most manageable locks known to man (or rather, me). It’s shining so much that I’ve received glowing compliments – and as an added bonus, it smells incredible too. Go and buy it people, I can’t recommend it enough. www.lookfantastic.com
Chanel. Chanel’s latest nail colour – a beautiful baby blue called Riva (£19) – went on sale yesterday, so it’s time to hot-foot it to your nearest counter. It’s controversial (in a beauty sense) to launch such a summery colour during the colder months, but I love it. I was sent a bottle pre-launch and have been rocking the look for the past week (not without chips, I have to admit). I love seeing a flash of colour when everything else seems so grey. Pricey for a nail varnish, yes, but you can bet that the high street brands will follow suit soon. Counters Nationwide.
Philosophy. I took the plunge and had a spray tan recently (I’m still not entirely sure that I liked the results, but that’s not the point of this post…) and I was instructed to exfoliate the morning of the tan, but not to moisturise. This left me in a pickle, as all my usual body scrubs are packed with hydrating oils – so I delved into my beauty cupboard to find an alternative. I discovered Philosophy The Big Skinny Body Scrub (£15) and it was perfect. It’s packed with thick exfoliating granules with the delicious scent of chocolate – but it left my skin dry and matte. Add it to the bathroom shelf. Department Stores Nationwide
Elemis. I’ve been using Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream for a while now – and I’ve been rewarded with glowing, even-toned, balanced skin. This week, I was sent the corresponding Oxygenating Night Cream (£90) and I am just as impressed. It has a slightly richer formula, working to hydrate skin as I sleep. It has the same dreamy scent (it’s no exaggeration to say that the scent of this product makes me feel happy) and leaves skin feeling hydrated, without a hint of greasiness. It’s not a cheap range, but my improved complexion is testament to the science behind the products. www.timetospa.co.uk
Whittlebury Hall. Seen our new Whittlebury Hall special offer? For just £75 per person, you can enjoy an overnight stay and free 25-minute body scrub – so you can enjoy the spa’s facilities, then relax on the treatment bed. My friend Claire took advantage of this special offer last time we ran it – without the body scrub – and (in her words), the spa is “really, really, really, really, really, really luxurious!” Why not treat a loved one to a spa break as their Christmas present? They will definitely thank you for it… Find out more by clicking here http://www.the-beauty-pages.com/specials.php
Feature: ADVENT CALENDAR OF BEAUTY (26.11.10)
Your countdown to Christmas starts here. Print out and keep our special advent calendar, with daily beauty tips and treats.
DECEMBER 1st- 4th
1st December- Happy December! It’s officially the start of the holiday season. Start your mornings in an appropriately festive way using Weleda Pomegranate Creamy Body Wash, £8.95 for 200ml (www.weleda.co.uk) to nourish and leave skin delicately scented.
2nd December- If you’ve neglected to wrap up warm in cosy mittens, your hands will no doubt have taken a battering from the cold weather. Treat them to a Seasonal Signature Aromatherapy Hand Facial, £40 for one hour at The Chelsea Day Spa, London (0207 351 0911) - a manicure that includes a mask and polish. Choose from four different seasonal scents to incorporate into the treatment - our favourite is Egg Nog Bliss with vanilla, cinnamon, clove and nutmeg.
3rd December- The first weekend of the party season! Get into the festive spirit with The Body Shop Cranberry Joy Shimmer Lotion, £8 for 250ml (www.thebodyshop.co.uk). The juicy fragrance is sweet yet fresh whilst the shimmer adds a subtle glow to skin.
4th December - In need of gift inspiration? Look no further than British fragrance house, Miller Harris, whose indulgent candles were reportedly chosen by the Camerons as a gift for the Obamas earlier this year. We’d be more than delighted to receive their Bois Votive Candle Gift Set, £40 (www.millerharris.com) on Christmas morning.
DECEMBER 5th- 8th
5th December- Need to unwind after Christmas shopping? Head to Elemis Day Spa for some well-deserved pampering with their Winter Warmer Delight package, £125 for 1 hour, 45 minutes (0870 410 4210). The package provides the perfect escape and combines three of Elemis’ most popular treatments, Exotic Lime and Ginger Salt Glow full body exfoliation and massage, Face and Body Sensation anti-aging facial and hot stone therapy body massage and a Mini Manicure, finishing with an Essie polish.
6th December- For many, it’s not the Holiday season until the Coca-Cola advert hits television screens. The beauty equivalent is arguably the sight of L’il Lush Pud Bath Ballistics, £1.95 (www.lush.co.uk), now firmly established as a Christmas tradition. Prefer showers to baths? Check out their Glogg Shower Gel, £3.90 for 100g, a wonderfully spiced mulled wine scented treat.
7th December- For instant festive appeal, paint nails with Essie Very Cranberry, £9.50 (www.nailsbymail.co.uk), a smooth berry red with flattering pink undertones which make it highly wearable.
8th December- Christmas stockings traditionally included a tangerine, which has inspired BonbonBalm to create a Christmas Tangerine Balm of the Month, £6 (www.bonbonbalm.com) for December, the perfect way to keep your lips soft and nourished for any unexpected mistletoe moments.
DECEMBER 9th- 12TH
9th December- Invitations coming in thick and fast? Carry around Shu Uemura Reindeer Kiss Palette, £39 (www.beautyexpert.co.uk) to take you from day to evening. It includes frosted winter pastel shades for eyes and cheeks, encased in a delightful compact featuring an adorable reindeer illustration.
10th December- Christmas and sparkle go hand in hand, so if you don’t go gold at any other time of year, this is your chance to shine. Clarins’ Barocco Gold Shimmer Powder for Face & Décolleté, £29 (www.clarins.co.uk) hints at a vintage Christmas with its opulent packaging and black powder puff. The product itself is a finely ground gold pearl which catches the light beautifully, without leaving you looking like a glittery bauble.
11th December- Reality shows, such as X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing, have become the modern-day equivalent to the Christmas pantomime. Fans of the shows will no doubt adore ex Strictly judge Arlene Philips’ festive makeup palette, Dancing with Colour, £40, which she has developed in collaboration with Vie at Home (www.vieathome.com). Be sure to bag yours in time for the finals!
12th December- Time to get organised with card writing and gift-wrapping. Clinique Christmas Wrappings Fragrance and Body Smoother Set, £39 (www.harrods.com) is the aptly named way to theme your beauty today.
DECEMBER 13TH- 16TH
13th December- As a nation, we tend to overdo things at this time of year, with chocolates aplenty and Christmas canapés in abundance. Philosophy Candy Cane Shower Gel and Lip Shine Duo, £20.50 (www.qvcuk.com), satisfies sweet cravings leaving plenty of room to indulge in mince pies!
14th December- Less than two weeks until the big day! If your beauty is still looking more Scrooge than Santa, it’s time to try Illamasqua Retro Reds Duo, £22 (www.asos.com) which encompasses old Hollywood glamour with Encounter Lipstick and Ruthless Nail Varnish.
15th December- It’s easy to forget that this season can be one of the most stressful times of the year. Luckily, festive Frankincense essential oil is renowned for its calming properties. Aromatherapy Associates recommend sprinkling a few drops of their De-Stress Frankincense Pure Essential Oil, £21.25 for 10ml (www.aromatherapyassociates.com) onto a tissue to carry around with you and inhale as required.
16th December- Getting the house prepared for guests isn’t just about decorating the tree. Make sure your bathroom is ready for unexpected visitors with a hand wash and lotion duo. We adore Marks & Spencer’s Festive Cinnamon Twin Rack Gift Set, which offers fantastic value for money at just £7 (www.marksandspencer.com).
DECEMBER 17TH-20TH
17th December- If you’re yet to try eyelash extensions, what better time to do so than the festive season? With pre-curled lashes which last up to four weeks, Flutter the Eyelash Artists, from £150 (www.fluttereyes.co.uk) are mobile specialists so if you can’t make it to their services at Harrods’ Urban Retreat or The Dorchester Spa, they will come to your home or office within London and the M25, allowing you precious extra hours.
18th December- Whilst a Marchesa party frock might be out of reach, this year, you can still add a touch of the A-list’s favourite brand to your evening style as they have collaborated with Le Metier de Beaute to produce an exclusive “Snowflake” collection. Double Entendre Lip Gloss, £25 (www.selfridges.co.uk), which comprises two high-shine shades, is the perfect addition to an evening clutch. Maybe our Founding Editor, Louise Emma Clarke, will be making use of the palette – as this is also the day she will be walking down the aisle!
19th December - Christmas is all about friends and family so why not invite friends round for a festive get together? Set the tone by lighting Fresh’s Cranberry Candle Trio, £28.50 (stockist number: 0207 846 4100) for a room filling fragrance.
20th December- The Three Wise Men supposedly came bearing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Ole Henriksen’s Three Little Wonders Mini Gift Set, £36 (www.harveynichols.com) is surely a worthy alternative, featuring miniature versions of the LA facialist’s bestselling products, Sheer Transformation, Invigorating Night Gel and the delectably orange scented, Truth Serum Collagen Booster.
DECEMBER 21ST- 24TH
21st December- Amidst the excesses of the season, be sure to take some time out to care for your body. It doesn’t get much more pampering than Crème de la Mer’s The Essential Body Collection, £185 (www.cremedelamer.co.uk) which contains cult classic The Body Refiner, The Body Crème, The Hand Treatment and The Lip Balm, all designed to tackle winter skin concerns.
22nd December- Think of others less fortunate this Christmas week when you light NEOM Luxury Organics’ Christmas Wish Candle, £40 (www.neomorganics.com). The candle comprises a warming blend of spicy cinnamon, ginger, mandarin and Tonka bean and if that weren’t sufficient to tempt you, it’s all in a good cause as NEOM will make a donation to the Make A Wish Foundation, which grants wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening illnesses.
23rd December- Go for gold by painting nails with Rococo Gold Leaf Nail Varnish, £22.50 (www.cultbeauty.co.uk), which can be used either alone or as an ultra-luxe top coat.
24th December- Festive favourites including Home Alone and Elf are filmed against a backdrop of New York, making the Big Apple synonymous with Christmas. It’s one of the most popular destinations for those opting to spend the holidays abroad and is the inspiration behind one of this year’s most desirable beauty gifts. With sixteen eyeshadows encased in a light-up, pop-up collectable presentation box, you’d be hard pressed to find a beauty addict who wouldn’t be thrilled to discover Urban Decay’s Book of Shadows Volume Three, £30 (www.debenhams.com) under the tree on 25th December.
Tried & Tested: WINTER LIP CARE (26.11.10)
Treat your pout to some TLC this winter with an intensive lip balm or serum. We’ve put six to the test…
CHAPSTICK MEDICATED LIP BALM, £1.59 (www.chemistdirect.co.uk)
What they say: ChapStick Medicated special formula includes four powerful ingredients. It quickly soothes the pain, hydrates with moisturisers and seals in moisture with a light, protective barrier to help heal severely dry, chapped lips.
The Results: The familiar packaging reminded me of something I used to keep in my school bag. It’s not exactly glamorous, but for less than two pounds I’m not going to complain. The great thing is that it does the job. The taste and smell of the balm remind me of more expensive lip treatments like Carmex that come in little pots, but I prefer the stick format as it’s more hygienic. I like the ‘zingyness’ of it – it makes my lips tingle – and the waxy texture made sure it stayed on during a really long walk on a cold day. No gloss, no tint - but a very hard-worker for an amazing price.
Best for: Budget buy
NIP+FAB LIP+NIP FIX, £7.95 (www.nipandfab.com)
What they say: Designed to ‘feed and protect the skin’ from the outside, this rich, soothing, healing balm is perfect for use on the lips, delicate nipples and is a welcome relief on areas of dry, damaged skin.
The Results: I like the packaging – it’s simple and easy to read, and a tube to me is preferable to a stick because it’s easier to apply and not as easy to break. The product itself is brilliant. I suffer from chapped lips in the cold and windy weather, which isn’t helped by central heating. I’ve been using this for just a day and a half and my lips don't feel tight and dry anymore. The cream feels nice on - not tacky or sticky like a lip-gloss - and I like the fact that it’s odourless. I don't currently have any nipple issues but I assume it would also work just fine on them too! A good buy and I think the tube will last a while.
Best for: Multi-tasking
MY ONE GREEN BOTTLE LOVELY LIPS, £16 (www.myonegreenbottle.co.uk)
What they say: This all-natural lip treat is made from 90% natural Vitamin E for powerful anti-oxidant and hydrating properties. The addition of Shea Oil and Cocoa Butter create a protective and nourishing blend for healthy, glossy lips. Unscented and flavour free.
The Results: I love the little green ‘rollette’ bottle and my first impressions were very good – I liked that it was scent-free and it’s a beautifully presented product. It has a smooth, slightly oily texture that made my lips feel really soft and moisturised. It gives a slight gloss to the lips, which may appeal to people who use it during the day. I always apply lipstick in the daytime though and tried it both under and over – unfortunately it’s a bit too oily to use with lipstick so I’ll stick to using it at night. Overall it has a lovely texture and a good moisturising effect – I’d definitely buy it!
Best for: Overnight success
SHIZEN LIP HYDRATING SERUM, £21.00 (www.qvcuk.com)
What they say: Keep your lips moist, firm and smooth with Shizen Lip Hydrating Serum. The intensely moisturising organic serum is great under a lip balm or lipstick to moisturise and to help relieve dry cracked lips. It contains jojoba oil and vitamins A and E.
The Results: I am a bit of a sucker for Aussie skincare products and this organic lip serum from Shizen didn't disappoint. I have big lips, and I find it hard to find a product that will keep them soft, especially in the winter months. The first whiff of this was a delight – citrus without being too sweet. You apply the liquid with a pipette, which you are meant to use morning and night before a lip balm. It feels a little oily when it first goes on, but not in a bad way. It then slowly seeps into your lips and starts to do its magic. If you are planning lots of kissing under the mistletoe this year and want something that will make your lips worth puckering up for, put this one on your Christmas list!
Best for: Deep moisturising
MARKS AND SPENCER FORMULA DRY SKIN RICH LIP BALM, £3.00 (www.marksandspencer.com)
What they say: This rich balm contains Sweet Almond oil to moisturise, Cocoa Butter to condition and Vitamin E to protect your lips. Its hypoallergenic formula makes it suitable for those with skin sensitivities.
The Results: I like the ‘scientific-looking’ packaging, which certainly makes the product look more expensive than it is. The hypoallergenic formula also appealed to me, because if I’m prone to reactions and my lips are the last place I’d want to have one! The balm has a rich texture, so only a small amount is needed. This means that the £3 tube is even better value than I first thought. It has a vague, and to be honest slightly odd taste and scent, which I thought might be coconut but couldn’t be sure. However it goes on well and left a pleasant tingly sensation on my lips afterwards. My lips felt smoother after a day or so of regular use.
Best for: Allergy sufferers
DR BRONNER'S ORANGE GINGER ORGANIC LIP BALM, £2.95 (0845 072 5825)
What they say: This mouth-watering 100% Organic Lip Balm contains jojoba and hemp oil moisturisers which are then locked in with beeswax to rejuvenate tired, chapped lips, leaving them silky soft and smooth.
The Results: I loved the old-fashioned packaging of this lip balm, although the tube is quite small and I’m not sure how long it would last. It’s very reasonably priced though – and what I really like about this brand is that they use only natural, fair trade and organic ingredients and donate large portions of their profits (between 30% to 70%) to charities each year. The balm itself is soft and smooth and has a good moisturising effect. Not everyone likes a flavoured lip balm but the orange and ginger tasted and smelled really Chrismassy, which makes it perfect for this time of year.
Best for: Eco warriors

TRIED & TESTED: HYDRATING SERUMS (19.11.10)
Is the cold weather having an impact on your skin? Turn to an intensive serum to re-inject some moisture…
CRÈME DE LA MER THE REGENERATING SERUM, £210 for 30ml (www.cremedelamer.co.uk)
What they say: A skincare powerhouse that diminishes the appearance of lines, wrinkles and pores.
The Results: I treat myself to premium skincare products regularly – but the price of this serum was a shock even to me. I was scared to use too much with each application – but luckily, a little went a very long way so the bottle would last for a couple of months at the very least. It has a milky texture and felt cooling and nourishing on my skin. I could feel the difference instantly, with my skin feeling noticeably suppler after one application. I’ve been using it for three weeks now, twice daily, and my skin feels more balanced and has a smoother, more even-toned appearance. I couldn’t afford to invest in this regularly, but I wish I could, as it is clearly doing great things to my skin!
Best for: Luxury choice
PAUL & JOE TREATMENT SERUM, £26 for 40ml (0207 6299161)
What they say: Excellent for hydrating and balancing your skin. This Treatment Serum has a rich and comfortable feel and spreads smoothly over the skin to leave it feeling firm, moist, elastic and supple.
The Results: I’ve always loved Paul & Joe’s packaging, so it didn’t surprise me when I lay eyes on this beautiful glass bottle, with floral etching around the rim. I also loved the scent - a classic floral fragrance, which made applying it feel quite decadent! The serum has quite a wet, slippery texture – and the first time I applied it, the dollop nearly fell off my fingers as I was replacing the cap of the bottle. Once on skin, however, it felt cooling and soothing. It took a little while to sink into skin, but left my complexion felt beautifully hydrated. My skin felt supple for longer than usual, so I was really impressed. I would recommend it.
Best for: Long-lasting results
LISA HOFFMAN VITAMIN A & C SERUM, £95 for 30ml (0207 9355000)
What they say: A water-free formula that delivers effective doses of Vitamin A and C (abcorbic acid) to provide antioxidant protection, which helps maintain skin tone and firming action. Also contains Retinyl Palmitate to improve the skin’s ability to combat aging and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
The Results: This serum has a thick gel-like texture and absorbed almost instantly into skin. I couldn’t believe how soft and silky my skin felt after applying it – and it made a great base for applying makeup. I didn’t need much to cover my whole complexion – roughly the size of a pea – so despite the high price tag, the pump bottle would last a while. I don’t have a huge amount of wrinkles, but there are fine lines around my eyes and edges of my mouth – they haven’t vanished, but I didn’t expect miracles – and the improved texture of my skin has made testing this product very worthwhile. If I was having a flush month, I would definitely consider investing in another bottle when it runs out.
Best for: Softening and smoothing skin
ARK HYDRATING SKINRESPONSE SERUM, £32.10 for 30ml (www.qvcuk.com)
What they say: Mineral rich serum with Algae and Cucumber extracts provides immediate and highly concentrated hydration. Actively addresses the moisture balance in skin that is showing signs of dehydration such as dryness, fine lines and dullness.
The Results: I’ve always had dry skin, which feels tight and uncomfortable during the winter. I didn’t initially think that the thin, runny formula would be intensive enough to keep my skin moisturised throughout the day – in fact, I felt a bit uneasy swapping it with my regular moisturiser, which is aimed specifically for dry skin. As soon as I smoothed it in, however, I realised it was perfectly suited to my skin type. It didn’t absorb straight away, leaving the surface of my skin feeling hydrated, supple, and soothed. Two hours later, I could still feel it on my skin – and that was after a brisk walk with the dog in plunging temperatures! I think it’d also work well as an intensive overnight skin treatment. I’ve already recommended it to two of my friends with a similar skin type.
Best for: Very dry skin
DERMALOGICA SKIN HYDRATING BOOSTER, £49 for 30ml (0800 591818)
What they say: An intensive hydrating fluid that revitalises parched skin. Hydrates, smoothes, and minimises fine lines with a concentrated blend of Hyaluronic Acid, Panthenol, Glycolipids, and Algae Extract to help restore moisture balance.
The Results: This thin, clear serum has a luxury feel, thanks to the rich scent of essential oils. At first, I wondered how long the pot would last, as it’s quite small – but in practice, you only need the smallest blob to cover the entire face and neck. It sinks in straight away and leaves the skin feeling dry – so I didn’t think it had done a great job of hydrating. But teamed with my moisturiser, I did notice that my skin felt softer and smoother for longer. I sometimes suffer from flakiness around my nose in winter, but since using this product it has been smooth and flake-free – so I am convinced it is doing a good job.
Best for: Teaming with moisturiser
CHANEL ACTIVE SERUM MOISTURE BOOST, £51 for 50ml (0207 49338 36)
What they say: An ultra-hydrating serum for dry or very dry skin goes to the source of skin's hydration needs.. At the heart of the formula: CERATONIA PFA* powerfully stimulates hydration; a Hydrabarrier System™ locks it in, resulting in healthy-looking, smooth, supple skin.
The Results: Generally, I’d describe my skin type as ‘normal’ – but during the winter, it can be prone to dry patches. I really liked the idea of this serum giving a ‘boost’ to my skin during the colder months – and the packaging was typically stylish for Chanel. The pump bottle made it easy to measure out the lightweight, blue-tinged serum, which has a light, floral fragrance. It absorbed very quickly, leaving my complexion feeling smooth and very soft. Teamed with my moisturiser, it kept my face feeling hydrated all day. My favourite thing about this product, however, is that it gave my skin an instant boost in radiance. I would really recommend it.
Best for: Boosting radiance
Treatment Review: SK:N LASER HAIR REMOVAL (19.11.10)
What it promises: To banish unwanted and embarrassing facial and body hair quickly and virtually painlessly using the latest laser hair removal technique that leaves skin smooth and hairless. The treatment is most popular with women for treating the hair on their faces, underarms and bikini lines - and men are no strangers to the clinic either, with most opting for laser hair removal on their backs, shoulders and chests. By using the latest in laser technology, a beam of light is focused on the hair follicles beneath the skin’s surface and can quickly and safely disable the hair and stop it from growing. The treatment is totally safe and does not damage the surrounding area and is suited to all skin types including Asian, Afro-Caribbean and even sensitive skin.
What happens: Before laser hair removal could be carried out, I had to undergo a patch test. This was a simple and quick procedure that determined if I was eligible for treatment – I had no adverse reaction and was safe to complete a full course of treatments. When it came to actually removing the hair, I was asked to sit or lie on the operating bed (whilst wearing the protective eye goggles provided). A beam of light was then shot onto the hair follicle beneath the skin’s surface in short and sharp little blasts. The energy from the laser was taken up by the melanin in the hair (this is the pigment that gives the hair its colour) and converted into heat - this destroyed not only the hair, but the hair matrix, and hair bulb at the base of the follicle.
The Results: The results are incredible. After a course of six treatments, my unwanted hair had completley disappeared and I was able to banish my razor and wax to the back of the bathroom cupboard for good. I would highly recommend this treatment for anyone who is a regular waxer, shaver, plucker or bleacher. Laser hair removal is time saving and actually works out to be cost effective in the long run. For the most effective results, regular treatments are recommended every four to six weeks depending on the area being treated and the average person needs a minimum of six treatments.
Price: Prices start from £195 for a course of six treatments.

Blog: PIA LONG – TRAINEE PERFUMER, WRITER, AND WEB-EDITOR – EXPLAINS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND GORILLA PERFUME (19.11.10)
Mark Constantine, the father of the father-and-son team of perfumers at Lush and Gorilla Perfume once remarked: "We have to really, really look around, to fish out and visit the few remaining real perfumers - it's like visiting a zoo."
You would be forgiven for feeling overwhelmed in any traditional setting where fragrances are sold and promoted. The glittering department store halls with rows of sales assistants and elaborate displays, scents strips standing to attention (hopefully yours). There are so many! How are we supposed to choose?
Perfume brands spend billions annually worldwide in TV adverts, bus shelter lightboxes, scented magazine strips, and luxury packaging.
Has perfume become an after-thought?
In some cases, yes. Most perfumes today are made up of similar materials and follow trends in current aroma chemicals-du-jour, whichever combination of odours happens to be in fashion. They are often evaluated by panels that are after a guaranteed performance, rather than artistic genius. If this sounds like trying to get the scent right for a laundry detergent, it's because it is. Often, the same companies who supply big brand names with their latest fine fragrance are also the ones deciding what your toilet bleach will smell of. There's nothing inherently wrong with that - but it's far removed from the artistic risk-taking that coloured the birth of modern perfumery in the late 19th century.
There have been exceptions. Angel by Thierry Mugler broke the mould when it was launched. Although it took its inspiration from the oriental family of fragrances, the addition of rich fruits, honey and that much-since-copied patchouli-chocolate accord was novel and shocking at the time.
Not many modern perfumes tend to go beyond a brief designed to appeal to a specific 'target market.'
Simon Constantine, son of the father-and-son Gorilla Perfumers at Lush, is in the lab today creating flavours for a yet-to-be released Lush product. Even he can't get away from the need for flavours and functional fragrances. He started his career as a compounder in Lush's fragrance rooms and worked his way up to Head of Creative buying and head perfumer. His Dad, being the previous head perfumer, seems to have set the pair up for an accidentally traditional proposition - and it's even more so when one discovers that the house of Guerlain was originally known as a manufacturer of high quality soaps.
Gorilla Perfume was formed to showcase the work of Mark and Simon Constantine. The pair have been creating soap and bath product perfumes along with fine fragrances for the now closed B Never Too Busy To Be Beautiful brand, but they felt that it was time to push the envelope a little further.
Not satisfied with launching the B perfumes into Lush, the original idea was to bring out a series of new scents and introduce them to the world much like a musician might introduce singles off a new album. The whole concept started off as 'Guerrilla Perfume' (based on the title of an interview at Basenotes), but soon morphed into 'Gorilla' after Mark's other son Jack made some memorable wisecracks about which name would be more believable.
In typical Lush fashion, packaging is plain and minimalist, and all emphasis is on the contents. This will put many people off, but Mark and Simon don't mind. They're after the sort of person who will take the trouble to try a scent on skin and make a decision based on how it smells.
These perfumes behave as though they were alive. That's possibly partly due to the 'house-style' of adding a much larger proportion of natural materials to the blends than is common today - The Smell of Weather Turning, a scent inspired by a witch, dream and climate change is over 70% natural and smells as though it is straight from the blotter. Once the mint and hay notes warm on your skin, the woody oak and green nettle notes become apparent. It's a unique perfume and would probably bomb at a glossy department store.
The brand was launched by a series of gallery exhibitions designed to immerse visitors in perfume, the stories behind them, ingredients and how they smell on one's skin.
The next one of these touring galleries will happen in Japan at the beginning of December. Gorilla Perfumes are sold through Lush stores nationwide and the whole range is available at http://www.gorillaperfume.com
Feature: SINK IN… (19.11.10)
Winter nights are closing in – so drag yourself in from the rain and sink into a tub of frothy bubbles. It’s time to rediscover the joy of the bath…
CANDLES
No bath is complete without a fragranced candle. The relaxing ambience and luxurious scent combine to create a spa environment, which is exactly what you need when you’re treating yourself to a long soak. Furthermore, the essential oils in scented candles are handpicked for their mood-improving powers - so sinking into that bath isn’t just good for aching bones, it’ll help soothe your mind too!
“Flickering, aromatic candlelight in the bathroom makes you feel relaxed and extra special,’ explains Debbie Wild, Jo Malone’s Fragrance & Lifestyle Director. “I love grapefruit – it’s a zesty scent, which I find deliciously relaxing.”
Try: Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir Scented Candle, £38 (www.jomalone.com). This candle combines the sweet fruity notes of raspberry, plum, pink pepper and pomegranate with spicier notes of patchouli, frankincense and spicy woods.
Cowshed Travel Candle Set, £20 (Selfridges and John Lewis Nationwide). There four irresistible candles are great value for money – and will instantly transform your bathroom into a luxury spa.
BUBBLE BATH
Tempted to bathe every single day? You’d be in good company, as historical beauty Cleopatra was renowned for her daily wallows in asses’ milk. These days – thankfully – there are plenty of luxurious bubble baths to tempt you into the tub.
Be careful to choose a product that won’t dry out your skin. Noella Gabriel, Director of Product and Treatment at Elemis recommends: “Look out for the ingredients Japanese Camellia Oil, Oat Extract, and Milk Protein base - they combine science and nature in perfect harmony.”
Try: Elemis Skin Nourishing Milk Bath, £39 (www.timetospa.co.uk). The rich milk protein base of nourishing vitamins, amino acids & minerals intensely hydrates skin for softness & suppleness. It’s ideal for extra dry skin.
Crabtree & Evelyn Foaming Milk Bath Powder, £14 (www.crabtree-evelyn.co.uk). Empty this sachet into the bath while it’s running – and as it creates mountains of bubbles. It would make the perfect stocking filler.
BATH OIL
Sometimes bubble bath just won’t cut it – so when your body is a craving something a bit more indulgent, turn to a silky bath oil. They won’t create bubbles, but increased levels of oils and milks will pamper and hydrate skin as you bathe. Better still, you’ll only need a few drops, so the products are great value for money too.
Try: Elemis Exotic Frangipani Monoi Moisture Melt, £29 (www.timetospa.co.uk). Noella Gabriel, Director of Product and Treatment at Elemis explains: “The skin-friendly formula in this bath cream ensures the body is cleansed, whilst protecting and hydrating the lipid layer to ensure your skin is smooth and supple afterwards.” The luxurious product doubles up as an intensive hair conditioning treatment for hair – simply apply before going to bed and wash out in the morning for nourished, shiny, tangle-free locks.
Cowshed Moody Cow Invigorating Bath and Massage Oil, £16 (Selfridges and John Lewis Nationwide). This floral, oriental oil blend balances and restores harmony. Infused with essential oils of rose geranium to help to regulate emotions and hormones, linden blossom to relieve tension, and frankincense to soothe and calm.
BODY WASH
Body wash might not seem like the most pampering or indulgent product – but there are an abundance of products on the market that go a step further than just keeping your body clean.
Look out for a product packed with aromatic oils, such as Rosewood, Geranium, Peppermint, Rosemary and Coconut, as these have energising and cleansing properties.
Try: MOR Marshmallow Bathing Elixir, £39 (Exclusively at House of Fraser). Tracy Van Heusden, Senior Beauty Buyer at House of Fraser explains: “MOR Collections combine heavenly aromas created by the finest essential oils while the innovative packaging feels indulgent and will look beautiful on the side of your bath”. This decadent bottle conceals a beautifully scented body wash that will make you want to jump straight into the tub.
Clarins Tonic Bath & Shower Concentrate, £15 (http://uk.clarins.com). This product not only cleanses skin, but also tones, firms and energises. With a fresh, zingy smell, it is infused with extracts of Juniper, Pine, St John’s Wort and Arnica to create a luxurious bathtime experience.
BODY SCRUB
Treat yourself to a pot of body scrub and it’s tempting to run a bath and delve your hand straight into the tub. If you have sensitive skin, however, be careful before taking the plunge – test the product on a small area of skin to check your skin can cope with the level of abrasion. Be careful not to rub too hard – the idea is to gentle exfoliate the top layer of skin, removing dead skin cells and encouraging regeneration. Look out for products that contain Vitamin E, which helps to protect the skin during exfoliation.
Try: Givenchy No Complex Smoothing Massage Exfoliator, £26.50 (www.givenchy.com). Givenchy has recently introduced their exclusive spa products to the beauty market – so you can recreate the pampering environment in your own bathroom. ‘The luxurious No Complex Smoothing Massage Exfoliator contains Carthame Oil and Hyper Oxygenated Corn Oil to hydrate and detoxify the skin respectively, leaving it revitalised and nourished after use,’ explains a Givenchy spokesperson.
Clinique Sparkle Skin Body Exfoliating Cream, £19 (www.clinique.co.uk) Housed in a generous jar, this pampering body scrub completes the mission for baby-soft, smooth-as-a-peach skin. It’s indulgent, luxurious, and very effective – and a little goes a very long way.
MOISTURISE
Caring for your skin shouldn’t stop at the neck – especially after you’ve soaked in a long bath. No matter how delicate the scrub, melt or bubble bath you use, your skin will still need moisturising afterwards to break the circle of dryness and dehydration.
“Over time, whether skin is dry and dehydrated due to nature or nurture, micro-cracks may develop, creating severe discomfort that escalates with time,” explains premium brand Crème de La Mer. Lathering yourself up – especially in winter – will reduce the dryness and leave your skin feeling soft and supple.
For long-lasting hydration, pick a product with seaweed in it – the rich nutrient delivers a cascade of moisture to the skin so it feels comforted and renewed on contact.
Try: Crème de La Mer The Body Crème, £163 (www.cremedelamer.co.uk). Known for their luxurious products, the world famous Body Crème contains Micro-Algae Complex™, which is made up of four types of algae including Plankton which is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids. The formula contains other key nutrients, including Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid, known for its ability to hold a thousand times its weight in water. It’s pricy but worth every penny – and is much more economical than getting a Seaweed wrap in a spa once a week!
Michael Kors Very Hollywood Fabulotion, £34 (0870 0342566). This luxurious, lightweight lotion leaves skin soft, smooth and feeling a million dollars. It is infused with Raspberry, Jasmine and Ylang Ylang to calm and relax your mind.
Editor’s Letter (19.11.10)
As I was pondering the subject of my Editor’s Letter this week, news broke that Prince William and Kate Middleton are engaged to be married. It took me a while to regain composure – as to be honest, there are few things more exciting than a Royal Wedding. I bet the dress designers are already busy in their studios, sketching and stitching potential dresses for the royal bride. Will she choose a floaty Jenny Packham? A vintage-style Temperley? A dramatic Vivienne Westwood (I would love that)? Or a regal Elizabeth Emanuel, the designer of Diana’s iconic wedding dress in 1981? And what about her hair? Soft curls (which seems to be Kate’s favourite look)? A sophisticated up-do? Tiara and veil? There’s so much to think about… Do you think Kate needs my help with the planning?
Selfridges. I’m not a big fan of chocolate, so advent calendars have never been top of my wish list – until that is, I set eyes on this Luxury Brand Advent Calendar by Selfridges (£60)… Each of the windows contains a new premium beauty product, from brands including Lancôme, Shu Uemura, Giorgio Armani, Yves Saint Laurent, Viktor & Rolf, Kiehl’s and Stella McCartney. There are luxury mascaras, lip-glosses, moisturisers, designer fragrances and lots more… I can only imagine the excitement every morning. Please let there be one waiting for me downstairs when I wake up on 1st December… Available at Selfridges.
Cloud Nine. During the day, I prefer my hair to have a bit of a kink – but I always run a pair of straighteners through for evenings out. For a few months, I’ve been using Cloud Nine Hair Micro Irons (£49.95), after a pair were kindly sent for me to review. They are small, easy to carry around (I travel a lot, so this is a big plus point), heat up quickly, and straighten my hair very effectively. For somebody who has previously only used ghd’s, I don’t take this recommendation lightly – but I genuinely am impressed. www.cloudninehair.com
Fudge. I love the sound of Fudge’s new Glitter Blast Sprays (£6.95), which have launched just in time for the party season. The strong-hold spray keeps your style in place – perfect if you are rocking this season’s sleek ponytail – whilst the glitter-packed formula lends locks a festive shimmer. The sprays are available in four varieties – gold, silver, multicoloured or lighter Silver/Gold shimmer (for a more subtle look). Whilst the glitter would be most noticeable on black or brunette hair, I think they’d make blonde locks that little bit more eye catching. 01282 683100.
Elemis Day Spa. I’ve visited the Elemis Day Spa (just off Bond Street in London) before – but only ever during the summer months. Last week, however, I visited on a freezing cold morning – and the experience was even more heavenly. I started to warm up as soon as I stepped into the doors of the spa, with the scent of spicy fragranced candles filling the air. And when I was taken to a cosy treatment room, I was delighted to discover the treatment beds were gently heated. My full review of the experience will follow soon – but in the meantime, I would highly, highly recommend a visit. www.elemis.com/dayspa/
Claudia Bradby. Of course, as a dog owner I am biased – but I love this ‘Love Me, Love my Dog’ necklace by Claudia Bradby (£95). The jewellery designer has teamed up with the charity Canine Partners (which aims to assist people with disabilities to enjoy greater independence), with 20% of the profits from each necklace will go straight to the charity. If you know a dog lover, why not buy it as a Christmas present? You’ll be supporting a fabulous cause, too. www.claudiabradby.com
Breaking News: OLAY RELEASES RESULTS OF THE BIG BRITISH BEAUTY POLL! (22.11.10)
Back in October, we told you about The Big British Beauty Poll run by the brand Olay – and a staggering 20,000 women aged between 18 and 65 jumped at the chance to air their views on everything from beauty habits to attitudes to cosmetic surgery to their ultimate beauty icon!
The results have just been released – and we were the first to log on and find out what British women think about beauty today! We’ve gathered a few of the most interesting findings below:
- Classic beauties were voted the most iconic beauties of all time! Women voted Audrey Hepburn their top choice, followed by Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor, and Twiggy.
- 50 per cent of women voted ‘youthful looking skin’ the most important beauty attribute, with less than 10 per cent voting ‘toned body’, ‘bright eyes’, or ‘shiny hair’ as their top choice.
- When asked ‘When it comes to ageing, what matters most to you?’ 34 per cent voted ‘wrinkles’, followed by ‘sagging jaw line’ at 31 per cent.
In addition to the survey, 13,000 women tried Olay Regenerist 3-Point Super Serum – and almost everybody gave a glowing report. In fact, an amazing 98 per cent said they would recommend the product to a friend!
It’s not surprising – as the product has been independently proven to firm skin as the UK’s leading super serum, costing £400! It contains the highest level of penta-peptides and vitamin B3 complex, delivering maximum firming and hydration benefits.
To provide women with another chance to have their say on all things beauty or to interact with a panel of leading beauty experts, Olay is conducting their first ever live wavecast over the internet. Make sure you are there! Details are below:

Tried & Tested: CURL DEFINERS (12.11.10)
Curly hair? Show it off with our selection of Curl Definers…
FUDGE LIQUID SKREWD, £9.95 (www.fudgehair.co.uk)
What they say: This is a medium hold anti-humidity curl enhancer that re-shapes and gives extra definition to curly hair. It repels moisture in humid-conditions with film-forming polymers and has a coconut, grapefruit and melon fragrance.
The Results: The functionality of the bottle spray was good – it was easy to hold and use when my head was upside-down, to get the product into the roots. I also really liked the fresh smell - a nice mix of coconut and citrus type aromas that stayed around all day. Overall I felt the product was pretty good – it certainly repels moisture (and therefore the dreaded frizz), but I did find the liquid sets quite quickly as I was applying it and felt a little sticky to start with. Once dry though, it works really well and the curls hold all day.
Best for: Great smell
TIGI CATWALK CURLESQUE DEFINING SERUM, £8.99 (www.beautybay.com)
What they say: This serum is a fusion of moisture-rich marine botanicals and deep-sea extracts which define and reshape while calming frizz. A light hold completes your look for curls with illustrious shine.
The Results: I really enjoyed using this and it changed my opinion of serums, which I assumed would have a sticky texture – especially on hair like mine, which is quite short. The consistency is light and it is pretty much odourless. I found it very easy to apply on towel-dried hair. It left my hair feeling very soft and manageable, but it seemed to add some lift and body too. I can't say I noticed the shine particularly, but I’m really pleased with the results. I like the classy packaging and would definitely use again.
Best for: Adding body
KMS CALIFORNIA CURLUP CONTROL CRÈME, £15.60 (www.feelunique.com)
What they say: This styling crème controls your curls and eliminates frizz, and bundles your hair into soft, sexy curls. The crème has a special combination of orange and mint that helps to enhance your curls and calm the scalp. It has IOPS, 'inside out perfecting system', which penetrates deep into your hair, making it more vibrant and healthier.
The Results: I thought orange and mint sounded an unusual combination, but although I'm not a massive fan of fruity fragrances, I found it was light and refreshing. The pump action was a little stiff and I wonder how easy it will be to get the product from the container without extreme muscle power. The crème itself was quite thick, which made it a little tricky to apply evenly - but the result was really good. My only complaint is that it made my curls look a little wet, but that said, it did control my frizz well and my hair retained its curls all day.
Best for: Staying power
MOP C-CURL DEFINING CREAM, £13.95 (www.hqhair.com)
What they say: A unique curl enhancing cream to provide smooth definition without residual tack. MOP C-Curl Defining Cream maintains curl throughout the day while protecting against frizz. Citrus-infused for antioxidant support, with a UV shield that preserves colour.
The Results: The bright orange packaging certainly made this one easy to spot in my bathroom! I liked the twist-and-squeeze design of the tube too. It’s a thick, citrus smelling cream, which I combed through my damp, long curly hair and found it really did separate out the curls. I thought my hair was going to end up ‘crunchy’ when it was drying, but thankfully it didn’t. The result was excellent, crunch-free ringlets that lasted until the next wash two days later. I loved the smell too. It’s pricey, but definitely worth it.
Best for: Defining ringlets
TOMMYGUNS CLEVER CURLS & WAVES TEXTURE SPRAY, £5.99 (www.tommygunshaircare.com)
What they say: With seaweed extract for playful waves or tousled curls, this amazing spray is rich in anti oxidants, vitamins & minerals for ultimate protection. Create natural waves, definition, bounce & texture.
The results: My hair is medium length and very curly. The first time I tried this product, I used this spray instead of my normal styling cream - but I don’t think it was quite enough. The smell is lovely, but it’s quite light. When I tried it again - this time after my usual styling cream - and it certainly added more definition to my curls and made my hair less frizzy. On its own I think it would be suitable for shorter, curly hair. But it also worked well between washes as a pick-me-up, so I certainly wouldn’t rule out using again, especially as it’s so reasonably priced.
Best for: Budget buy
PHILIP KINGSLEY CURL ACTIVATOR, £17.00 (www.philipkingsley.com)
What they say: Provides curl retention, hold and shine. Created for those in pursuit of perfect curls, Curl Activator provides medium hold for all hair types, and enhances, smoothes and separates curls leaving hair infused with shine and defined waves.
The Results: I didn’t get off to a great start with this, as I felt the tub was more suitable as a conditioner or masque than a styling product. It’s quite a gloopy cream/gel and difficult to scoop out and gauge the right amount – a pump dispenser or tube would have worked much better. The results, however, are really good. It doesn’t smell of much, which is fine, but really defines and separates out locks of my hair, without any stiffness or stickiness. My hair felt like it was in better condition after a couple of uses. It is quite expensive, but the tub is pretty big so I think it would last a while.
Best for: Treating yourself
Feature: START AS YOU MEAN TO GO ON… (12.11.10)
Not sure what to do with the longer, darker nights? Make it your mission to experiment with new beauty brands and product ranges. We’ve put six ‘Starter Kits’ to the test…
MOROCCAN OIL TRAVEL PACK
The Kit: Moroccan Oil Travel Pack, £29.25 (www.moroccanoil.com)
What’s included? It might not be named a ‘Starter Kit’, but it’s the perfect place to start with cult haircare range Moroccan Oil. The waterproof bag contains: Moisture Repair Shampoo 70ml, Moisture Repair Conditioner 70ml, Hydrating Styling Cream 75ml, and Moroccan Treatment 25ml.
Why bother? Not heard about Moroccan Oil? You must have been asleep for most of 2010, as barely a day has passed without a rave review appearing in the press. The brand has a huge following in the world of fashion, film, and television and boasts a long list of celebrity fans, including Beyonce, Charlize Theron, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Lopez and Taylor Swift.
The key ingredient in the products is Argan Oil, which is rich in vitamins and natural elements to fortify the hair. It leaves hair soft, healthy, shiny, and protected against environmental stressors.
If you need further incentive, the oil is harvested under a fair trade programme, helping to support thousands of families in the Souss-Massa region of Morocco.
What did we think? I have straight, fine hair and was a bit wary of using products that contained oil - but I didn’t need to worry. The products have done amazing things! My hair feels incredibly soft and appears shinier than I’ve ever seen it, yet it still has volume and is easy to style. My favourite product is the treatment oil – I only needed a tiny bit to transform locks. It has the same effect as an expensive salon treatment, yet takes just seconds.
OLE HENRIKSEN STARTER KIT
The Kit: Ole Henriksen Starter Kit for Oily/Blemish Skin Starter, £65 (www.bathandunwind.com)
What’s included? If your skin is prone to blemishes and oiliness, this kit contains everything you need to calm, purify and refine. It contains: Aloe Vera Deep Cleanser 59ml, Grease Relief Face Tonic 59ml, Vitamin Plus Crème 28g, Invigorating Night Gel 28mg, Blemish Attack Mask 28g, and Walnut Complexion Scrub 28g.
Why bother? After years sharing advice with top beauty editors, celebrities, and clients at his Hollywood spa, skincare guru Ole Henriksen developed a skincare line to address every major skincare concern. The range now boasts a loyal A-Lister following, including Paris Hilton, Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron and Katy Perry.
With ingredients including Aloe, Chamomile, and Alpha Hydroxy Acid Complex this kit is the perfect introduction to the brand for those with problem skin.
What we think? Despite being in my early 30’s, I still battle with blackheads and regular breakouts – so a skincare range that addresses that concern is well worth a try. I loved the packaging – it’s far more glamorous than the ‘teenage’ brands I usually rely on. The products were a real pleasure to use and my skin felt calm and refreshed after using them. My favourite product is the Grease Relief Face Tonic, which has smoothed my skin and visibly reduced blackheads. Two weeks on and my skin is already clearer. I will definitely be investing in a selection of products when the trial-sizes run out.
BAREMINERALS GET STARTED KIT
The Kit: bareMinerals Get Started Kit, £45 (www.selfridges.com)
What’s included? Thinking of moving to mineral makeup? Your skin will thank you for it – and this is a fabulous place to start. The bareMinerals Get Started Kit is available in four different skin tones - Light, Medium, Dark and Tan – and includes: Two Foundation shades, Mineral Veil/Tinted Mineral Veil, Warmth, Full Flawless Face Brush, Flawless Application Face Brush, Maximum Coverage Concealer Brush/Light Stroke Brush, Bisque Multi-Tasking Concealer, and Get Started DVD.
Why bother? There’s a reason why this set is one of the top selling products at Selfridges, across all four stores nationwide. Millions of women have discovered that mineral makeup appears flawless, yet feels completely natural.
And it doesn’t just feel natural – it is natural. The brand use the finest quality mineral ingredients in the products, creating makeup that is so natural you can sleep in it.
What we think? I like the idea of wearing mineral makeup, but I have no idea how to apply it so have always been put off buying it in the past. Having this kit handed to me was a real treat and I watched the DVD before I got started. I found it quite hard to apply the products at first – especially the foundation – but now I have the hang of it, I love the result. To be honest, I probably wouldn’t apply every product on a daily basis – but I will definitely keep using the foundation and save the others for nights out!
BEST OF KORRES
The Kit: Korres Best Of Gift Set, £17.50 (www.bathandunwind.com)
What’s included? What better way to discover natural bodycare brand Korres, than by treating yourself to this ‘Best of’ Kit? It includes: Wild Rose SPF6 24-hour Moisturiser 10ml, Evening Primrose Eye Cream SPF6 5ml, Basil Lemon Shower Gel 50ml, Vanilla Cinnamon Shower Gel 50ml, Guava Body Butter 50ml, and Yoghurt Cooling Gel Sachet 9ml.
Why bother? Try Korres and you will quickly fall head over heels. Whether it’s the dreamy, indulgent, sweet-scented textures, or the fact that the ingredients are naturally derived and earth-friendly, you will be heading off to stock up on full-size bottles before the kit has even run out.
You’ll be in good company too, as Korres is sold all over the world. The Greek brand, which boasts more than 300 skin and haircare products, is stocked at department stores in London, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Milan, Rome, Barcelona, Helsinki, Berlin, Munich, Tokyo, Dubai, Hong Kong, Johannesburg and Sydney. Celebrity fans include Angelina Jolie, Scarlet Johansson and Kylie Minogue.
What we think? I had never heard of Korres before I tested this kit, but I was hooked from the moment I opened the box and a sweet, delicious scent escaped. It’s hard to pick a favourite product, as all six are divine and left my skin feeling amazingly soft – but if pushed, I would go for the Vanilla Cinnamon Shower Gel. It’s so spicy and warming (it reminds me of Christmas), so is perfect for early morning showers in winter.
LIZ EARLE ESSENTIALS TRY-ME KIT
The Kit: Liz Earle Essentials Try Me Kit, £21.75 (http://uk.lizearle.com)
What’s included? This kit offers the perfect introduction to home grown skincare brand Liz Earle, with everything you need for your everyday cleansing routine. It contains: Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser 30ml, Instant Boost Skin Tonic 50ml, Skin Repair Dry/Sensitive 15ml, Skin Repair Normal/Combination and Muslin Cloth.
Why bother? Liz Earle is known in the beauty industry as one of the most effective natural skincare ranges. The products are luxurious, pampering, and yet incredibly easy to use. Liz Earle and business partner Kim Buckland are passionate about sourcing and using the safest, highest quality active natural ingredients.
Since the launch of the brand 15 years ago, Liz Earle Naturally Active Skincare has grown a large and loyal following. The signature product, Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser, has won countless industry awards. And if you want further proof of the brand’s effectiveness, just look at the skin of some of the brand’s celebrity fans, including Erin O’Connor, Jodie and Jemma Kidd, Emma Thompson and Orlando Bloom.
What we think? My skin is dry and usually quite flaky, especially around my nose, but it’s feeling fat smoother and softer after using this kit for the past week. The products are pricier than I’d usually opt for, but I could tell the difference in the quality and the results. The best bit for me was the luxurious scents. I’m already addicted to the cleanser and will definitely be investing in a full size bottle when the tester runs out.
ESPA INTRODUCTION COLLECTION
The Kit: ESPA Introductory Collection, £16 (www.espaonline.com)
What’s included? This kit is packed with everything you need to explore ESPA’s skincare range: Hydrating Cleansing Milk 15ml, Floral Spafresh 15ml, Refining Skin Polish 5ml, 24 Hour Moisturising Complex 5ml, and 24 Hour Eye Complex 5ml.
Why bother? If your idea of bliss is to spend a day lounging in a fluffy robe in a luxury spa, ESPA will definitely appeal. ESPA started its as a spa brand and it is still integral to everything they do – so you can expect dreamy textures, rich scents, and of course, professional results.
ESPA is best known for its bodycare products – but the brand’s skincare line is getting more and more attention. The range is indulgent, yet highly effective, infused with the highest quality plant extracts and oils to leave skin soft, supple, and revitalised.
What we think? It makes sense that this is a spa brand, as using the five products together is the perfect home facial. My skin is dry and is prone to feeling tight and uncomfortable, but these products left it feeling supple and hydrated all day. The packaging is luxurious and the fragrances are beautiful (especially the Floral Spafresh, which I actually considered wearing on pulse points as a perfume!) – but my only gripe is that the tester sizes are very small for the price. I am definitely going to put the full-size bottles/jars on my Christmas list though, so it has clearly done its job!
Editor’s Letter (12.11.10)
I have a very efficient nose. In fact, I am known to my other half as ‘the sniffer dog’ – and believe me, I am much better at detecting scents than the real canine in our family, whose short, squashed nose (thanks to her breed, rather than an unfortunate accident) has rendered her pretty hopeless, Having such a sensitive snout is not always a blessing though… Unpleasant scents seem to affect me more acutely – I often wish I carried a facemask around with me, perhaps infused with a few drops of lavender oil to mask the smell of anything unpleasant. I sometimes wonder whether I missed a calling in life to become a perfumer – but when I heard recently that gaining the qualification involved 10 years of training, I felt pretty thankful I hadn’t had the brainwave when I first left university. Of course, being a beauty journalist gives my nose enough of a workout - so this week, I have celebrated my sense of smell with five beautifully fragranced products. Take your pick from the selection below – and get ready to sniff!
Original Source. I love nostalgic spicy scents! So when Original Source’s Winter Shower Gel (£1.99) landed on my desk, I was quickly plotting my escape from the office and into the shower - and it didn’t disappoint… The brand created the scent by grounding whole Black Peppercorns with aromatic Cardamom – and the result is incredibly warming. I’d highly recommend cracking the bottle open on the coldest winter mornings – and at this price, I will be stocking up for the whole season. Boots and Superdrug Nationwide.
Elemental Herbology. If you prefer your scents a little lighter, let me draw your attention to Elemental Herbology’s new Botanical Body Repair (£30). The silky body oil (a blend of fatty acid rich Argan, Rose Mosqueta, Sacha Inchi, Buriti and Sweet Almond Oil) leaves skin beautifully soft and hydrated, whilst laced with delicate scents of Frangipani, Jasmine and Mandarin. The fragrance reminds me of exotic holidays and instantly brings a smile to my face - the fact that my skin looks and feels so much softer is a very welcome bonus. www.spacenk.co.uk
Organic Pharmacy. Struggling with the darker mornings? Invest in Organic Pharmacy’s incredible Seaweed, Lemon and Eucalyptus Body Scrub (£35). I’ll be honest - I’ve never been a huge fan of the scent of Eucalyptus (sinus-clearing chewing gum put paid to that), but this scrub has changed my mind completely. To say that the fragrance is invigorating and energising is a huge understatement. And of course, the silky softness of my skin (laced in extracts of olive oil, vitamin e, and honey) makes it even more of a pleasure. www.theorganicpharmacy.com
NEOM. Is it too early to enjoy festive candles? As far as I’m concerned, it’s never too early – so this week, I have been enjoying NEOM Organic’s fabulous Christmas Wish Home Candle (£40). It takes just minutes for the blend of Cinnamon, Ginger, Mandarin and Tonka Bean to start filling the room, creating a delicious, warming ambience. Better still, NEOM donates £1 from every sale to Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants wishes to children fighting life-threatening illnesses. What’s not to like?! www.neomorganics.com
Vaseline. Fan of Vaseline Lip Therapy? You will love the new Cocoa Butter version, which smells good enough to eat (£1.89). It boasts the same lip protection properties as the original, forming a natural moisture barrier to shield lips from the elements – which makes it ideal for the coldest autumn and winter days. Better still, it smells like chocolate sponge pudding with toffee sauce (you can tell I’m hungry as I’m typing this…) If you know a chocaholic, this little tin would make the perfect stocking filler. www.boots.com
Blog: ANDREW DIXON – GENERAL MANAGER OF BURT’S BEES, EUROPE – ANSWERS QUESTIONS ABOUT THE BRAND (12.11.10)
Burt’s came in for a lot of flack when Clorox bought it in 2007. How has the acquisition affected the company?
It has worked in a very positive way, which has in reality benefited both organisations. The new partnership has seen the two companies moving toward greater things together. Clorox executives have tapped the brains of Burt’s Bees employees on everything from reducing, and eventually eliminating, animal testing, to reducing waste, greening its buildings and marketing its new range of earth-friendly cleaners. Burt’s Bees has benefited from Clorox as much as Clorox has learned from Burt’s Bees. The new investment has allowed Burt’s Bees to mount a significant and ambitious marketing push, cementing its intentions to take all-natural earth friendly products firmly into the mainstream marketplace. And business brains at Clorox have been helping Burt’s Bees streamline its organisational structures and distribution networks.
How big is Burt’s Bees?
Burt’s Bees is a global business now operating in 23 countries from South America to Australia, with many countries coming online over the past 2-3 years, with global sales in excess of $200m and in product terms. we sell one of our famous lip balms every 20 seconds.
What are Burt’s Bees’ plans for further geographical expansion?
We have big ambitions to grow our hive of consumers throughout the world, and we have been working hard on our geographic expansion over the past 2-3 years. We are now present in 23 countries – mostly in Europe and Asia – with plans to enter 8 additional countries in the next few months including our first in Latin America. In the UK, Canada, and Australia, where we have had a presence for a number of years, we are investing to develop leadership positions within the category.
What do you have planned in terms of NPD?
We have a good track record for successfully launching quality innovations. In the past three years, we have introduced nearly 100 new products including most recently the first truly natural line of anti-blemish face care products and in the US this has included a high quality line of oral care products. Our product development team is focused on driving our core categories: face care, lip care, body care, and baby care. During 2010, our focus will be on supporting an improved line of body lotions, and introducing a new lip colour product.
How do you feel Burt’s Bees stacks up in skin care, being a very competitive environment?
Burt’s Bees homeland is The Natural personal care market, which continues to thrive. With the economic downturn, we did see the category’s growth rate globally cut from 15-18% growth to 7-9%. Most of the consumers who had switched to natural product remained in the category but new users as always were harder to find. In the few months, we have seen the category rebound back to its previous growth rates which is very encouraging. This is being fed by retailers who see the benefits of migrating consumers into truly natural products and by manufacturers who continue to invest in new product innovation and marketing activity. Our proposition centres around ‘discovering the beauty of wellbeing’ and our formulations not only deliver good benefits to our customers but are also very good for the planet. One of our business aims is to be the greenest natural personal care company in the world and we are currently well on the way to making this a reality, but we know that consumers first want products that deliver the benefits they are seeking, so our formulations have to achieve a high benchmark. Knowing that by using Burt’s Bees products also benefits the planet is a reassuring secondary reason to purchase.
At Burt’s Bees when we say natural, we mean natural. All our products are formulated with at least 95% natural ingredients and by 2010 they will all be 100% natural. You’ll never find petrochemicals, sulphates, phthalates, or parabens in any of our products.
We believe in total transparency and label every product with a natural percentage bar so you can see the high level of natural ingredients in every product. What’s more, our commitment to working in harmony with nature ensures Burt’s Bees will make you feel good about yourself and the environment.
Who are your customers? Is there a customer set that you currently don’t have that you would like in the future?
At Burt’s Bees we have a unique consumer and customer base, including naturalists, environmentalists, as well as wider mainstream audience. The Burt’s Bees range caters for all consumers, but we are always looking to expand our ranges to meet the varied and ever changing needs of our customers.
Spa Review: AJALA SPA AT ST PAUL’S, LONDON (12.11.10)
Location: Ajala Spa at St Paul’s, 10 Godliman Street, London EC4V 5AJ. 0207 70741010. www.ajalaspa.com
Facilities: Ajala Spa is located in the heart of the city, under the shadow of St Paul’s Cathedral. It takes just seconds to feel relaxed and at ease, with a fluffy robe and slippers allocated to every guest at arrival. And within minutes, a therapist will have lead you to a beautiful, oriental-style treatment room – complete with orchids, jewel-coloured blankets, and a huge bathtub. The treatment menu is extensive, with a balance of classic, traditional choices, alongside exotic-sounding treats, such as the ‘Thai Herbal Facial’, ‘Chakra Balancing with Hot Stones’ and ‘Hawaiian Lomi Lomi’. When you have roused yourself from the treatment bed and enjoyed a cup of energising herbal tea, the Ajala Spa has plenty more to offer… The spa houses a Sun Light Therapy room, where visitors can enjoy 100% safe UVA and UVB filtered sun light for up to an hour. The best way to describe the effect is to imagine the way you feel on a bright summer’s day, with energy levels and spirits soaring – the perfect antidote to the colder, darker days ahead. And if you spend at least two hours enjoying treatments, you will also gain access to the thermal suites; including the pool, aroma steam room, salt sauna, Jacuzzi, and lanconium.
Ambience: I visited Ajala Spa on a weekday and it was very quiet – of course, most of the nearby Londoners will have been hard at work at their desk. There wasn’t a voice to be heard; simply the sound of magazine pages being flicked, gentle splashing in the pool, and feet padding around in slippers. The Ajala Spa is the perfect place to escape from the noise of city life – and I will definitely be back.
Treatment Reviewed: Hawaiian Lomi Lomi, £155 for 2 hours (one therapist) or £240 for 1 hour 50 minutes (two therapists). This luxurious treatment began with a body exfoliation – a thick, tropical-scented scrub, which instantly transported me to exotic shores - before I jumped off the treatment bed and washed it away in the shower (conveniently located in the treatment room). Next came the truly pampering part: a long, indulgent massage. The pressure was much lighter than I would usually opt for (think stroking, rather than kneading) – but for a treatment of this length, it worked perfectly. The treatment is designed to rid the body of unwanted, negative charged energy, replacing it with a positive force – and afterwards, I felt beautifully relaxed, yet revived and energised.
TRIED & TESTED: BERRY LIPSTICKS (05.11.10)
Cross over to the dark side this season with our selection of deep, berry lipsticks.
NEW CID I-POUT LIGHT UP LIPSTICK WITH MIRROR IN VERY CHERRY, £14 (www.newcidcosmetics.com)
What they say: The creamy Vitamin E enriched formulation of i-pout gives lasting wear in eight classic shades, suitable for all skin tones. Featuring built-in lights and a mirror, you can apply i-pout anytime, anywhere.
The Results: Although the white plastic packaging is a step away from my usual luxury brand, I was impressed that the product included a mirror and optional light for ease of use on the go. The colour is very wearable. Cherry is the perfect description of the shade as it’s a deep red with hints of pink, which makes it flattering against the skin. I was really impressed with the lasting formula - I only had to reapply a couple of times throughout the day, after meals. The downside is that it was very drying, which meant that I’d probably use it occasionally - rather than daily - and slather on lots of lip balm to rehydrate.
Best for: Lasting colour
ESTEE LAUDER PURE COLOUR LONG LASTING LIPSTICK IN EXTRAVAGANT BERRY, £17 (0870 034 2566)
What they say: Inspired by festive celebrations, Estee Lauder introduces Pure Colour Extravagant by Tom Pecheux, an indulgent party season look. This stunning collection features luxurious winter berries and vivid reds for lips.
The Results: After a summer of wearing nude lipsticks and natural glosses, I’ve been looking forward to trying the new berry lipstick shades - but as I’m fair, I wasn’t sure I would be able to wear the look without looking completely washed out. Thankfully this product suited me perfectly and I’ve been wearing it ever since! It’s a classic, creamy lipstick, which applies beautifully. When you look at the colour in the tube, it does appear to be quite dark with lots of gold micro-glitter - but upon application, the glitter isn’t noticeable. The colour itself is the perfect berry shade, not too dark but suitably on trend. I’d recommend this to anyone wanting to experiment with berry colours for the first time.
Best for: Trying out the trend
CLINIQUE DIFFERENT LIPSTICK IN A DIFFERENT GRAPE, £14.50 (www.clinique.co.uk)
What they say: Not-so-shy colours that see right through to the skin. A glossy, weightless finish. Instant polish for lips. The tapered stick allows for precise application of a glossy finish with the ease of a lipstick. Succulent colour that won’t stain lips. Different Lipstick is non-drying and hydrates delicate lips with avocado extract, beeswax and vitamin E.
The Results: I never usually wear lipstick, preferring gloss – but I must admit that I felt a twinge of excitement at the grown-up, yet modern packaging when I first set eyes on it. The lipstick applies really smoothly – and the coverage is sheer, which adds colour without being overwhelming. I’d describe the shade a raspberry rather than grape, as it’s more delicate and less purple than the name suggests. I was surprised that my lips felt hydrated, which isn’t something I’ve previously associated with lipsticks. The trade-off for this is that the colour isn’t particularly long-lasting and I did find myself having to reapply fairly frequently. I’d definitely recommend this to other lip colour first timers.
Best for: Hydrating colour
MARKS & SPENCER PERFECTION SUPER GLOSS LIPSTICK SPF 20 IN CRANBERRY, £7.50 (www.marksandspencer.com)
What they say: This super glossy lipstick is designed to give an even coverage and a long lasting vibrant colour for smoother, fuller lips. Available in 12 different shades.
The Results: This is the first time I’ve tried M&S makeup and have to confess that I didn’t anticipate it to be particularly fashion forward. How wrong I was! I liked the chic, slimline packaging, which gives the lipstick an expensive feel, as does the inclusion of SPF. It’s a very creamy, which meant that it went on smoothly and I liked that you can build the colour by applying more layers. This is exactly the berry shade I’ve been looking for this season - it’s a deep pinkish red with brown undertones, which gives it depth. The finish is glossy, which makes it wearable and I think it will work well into the party season too. I naturally have olive skin, but I’d say this shade would work on a wide range of skintones.
Best for: Value for money
DOLCE & GABBANA THE LIP JEWELS, £40 (exclusively available at Harrods)
What they say: The Lip Jewels is the ultimate beauty luxury, a must-have accessory that slips effortlessly into a pouch, to apply, to revive, anytime, anywhere. An extraordinary salute to Dolce & Gabbana’s celebrated Classic Cream Lipstick, the discerning palette contains the four most iconic shades personally selected from the complete Make-up Collection- Dahlia, Devil, Ultra and Nude.
The Results: I love wearing a slick of bright red lipstick, but it seems that the mood has progressed onto slightly darker shades. This palette is expensive, although it does include four shades. I usually opt for traditional lipstick formats, which I apply quickly rather than using a brush, so I was hoping this would convert me into better habits - and the quality of the application has certainly helped to convince me. Realistically, only two of the colours can be classed as berry shades - the others include a classic red and a nude, but both were very wearable. They apply beautifully and are impressively long lasting. I’ve fallen in love with the palette and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to treat themselves or a loved one.
Best for: Luxury buy
BARE ESCENTUALS LIP COLOUR IN BERRY CORDIAL, £13 (www.bareescentuals.co.uk)
What they say: Imagine a lip colour so decadent, so luxurious, it can only be 100% pure bareMinerals. This all-natural formula was created with no artificial dyes and zero preservatives without sacrificing quality, and it has a healthy infusion of the freshest, purest minerals on earth.
The Results: Although the chunky black packaging wasn’t to my personal taste, it is at least distinctive. The lipstick was very smooth to apply and I was impressed with the high pigmentation - the colour is lovely and deep, with a slightly frosted finish to add a three-dimensional aspect. I was especially impressed with how well the lipstick lasted and it didn’t dry my lips, as I’ve discovered to be the case with some brands. Even when the frosting started to wear off, it left a really natural stain, which I topped up with a little lip balm for a more subtle effect. For the combination of quality and natural appeal, I’d certainly be willing to spend £13 on this. It’s a brilliant discovery!
Best for: Natural choice
Treatment Review: DR MURAD AHA RAPID EXFOLIATOR FACIAL, URBAN RETREAT, HARRODS (05.11.10)
What it promises: When you book at Dr Murad facial, you can feel reassured that you are getting the best pharmaceutical-grade ingredients, combined with the latest skincare technology. The AHA Rapid Exfoliator includes a glycolic peel, which works alongside a unique patented blend of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, and hydrators to dramatically improve skin texture and appearance.
What happens: Heading to Urban Retreat at Harrods for a treatment is always a pleasure. With Roja Dove’s Haute Parfumerie to browse, plush sofas to fall into, and stacks of glossy magazines to paw through, waiting for my appointment is part of the overall experience. When the therapist arrives, of course, the day gets even better… I hadn’t tried Dr Murad’s products before this treatment, but I am thrilled to have now discovered the range. The facial began with cleanse, tone, and gentle exfoliation, whilst a stream of warm steam was directed over my face to open up pores. Next came the glycolic mask, which I was warned would tingle. I would describe the sensation as a little stronger than ‘tingling’ - ‘prickling’ would be closer to the mark – but the therapist never took her hands from my face, massaging the mask into skin for at least 10 minutes, which soothed the sensation. As time went on, the prickling slowed and finally stopped. From this point, I was able to drift off completely. A soothing mask was applied and the therapist treated my shoulders and arms to a blissful massage. The facial was concluded with a generous application of moisturiser, lip cream, and eye cream.
The Results: I’m no stranger to facials, but this treatment is something quite unique. I usually jump (or slither) from the treatment bed to reapply my makeup before I face the world again (mineral, of course). With Dr Murad, however, I didn’t feel the need. My skin appeared bright, radiant and even-toned (it must have been the prickling mask), whilst it felt beautifully smooth and soft. I would highly recommend this facial – it’s the perfect compromise between innovation and indulgence.
Price: £95 for 70 minutes.
Location: Urban Retreat, Harrods, 87-135 Brompton Road, Knightsbridge, London SW1X 7XL. 0207 8938333. http://harrods.urbanretreat.co.uk.
Blog: LEADING HOLISTIC SKIN THERAPIST JULIA HART SHARES HER FAVOURITE TIPS, PRODUCTS, AND INGREDIENTS (05.11.10)
Beauty Sleep - Sleep is the foundation of our wellbeing. We all know the effects of a bad nights rest on our skin and that is because human growth hormones are released during sleep which is essential for cell renewal. The way you sleep also determines your wrinkle pattern. If you favor one side, your face may end up more pleated on that side; try a Silk Pillow case for less face creases.
Ingredients - Skincare has never been as scientific as it is now and can give you remarkable cumulative results. Here are my top ‘A’ list ingredients that are proven and have evidence to back up their claims - Lactic Acid, Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Retinoids (i.e. Vitamin A), Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Niacinamide (Vitamin B3), Peptides (cell communicators), Growth Factors, Sunscreen actives. We need these in high enough quantities to make a difference. The nearer the top of the ingredient list – the better!
Oxygen - My favourite skin treatment has to be the Intraceuticals Oxygen Rejuvenation Infusion which uses special serums pushed deep into the skin using oxygen under pressure. The effects are instant, but you also see cumulative and dramatic results over time. Lifts, plumps and tightens, what more can you want?
Exercise - is vital for stimulating circulation. Increased circulation means the network of capillaries can deliver the nutrients and water to our skin cells. Our skin’s hydration is only as good as our circulation (even if you drink litres of water!). Exercise also stimulates the growth hormones – which slow right down when we hit 30!
Electrical stimulation – I love the TUA VISO. This is one of my top gadgets for tightening the underlying structure of the skin, in my opinion it is best to start this in your 30’s and 40’s before there is too much muscle atrophy or sagging. My favourite tip is to use this alongside a product that contains DMAE for much quicker, dramatic results! Jan Marini C-ESTA serum is brilliant and contains good levels of this plus it is an excellent antioxidant.
Supplements & Diet– I am big fan of insuring my skin against damage with the help of some excellent supplements, my favourite anti-ageing supplements are super antioxidant PURE-XP GliSODin, Viridian Hyaluronic Acid and Alpha Lipoic/DMAE. Ensure you eat as well as you can and include face firming protein in every meal.
Light Therapy – I use the Baby Quaser Red LED therapy which has a regenerating effect on skin cells, stimulates collagen and elastin and reduces the depth of fines lines, tightens pores and gives skin a healthy tone.
Prime skin – One of my skincare must haves is Jan Marini PRIME. Not just an ordinary primer, this lightweight gel gives the skin an airbrushed, flawless and poreless look and contains some remarkable ingredients that work on the signs of ageing – co-Enzyme Q-10 Nano technology, Peptides, Hyaluronic microspheres, white tea, red tea, green tea and pomegranate.
Facial Massage - I give my own skin a massage every day using the Gankin Method. I normally do this at my moisturizing step to get the blood flowing to my skin, relieve tension and stiffness in facial muscles. This can have a lifting effect and stimulates the lymph to aid in the removal of waste products and puffiness.
Microneedling – I use the Medik8 Titanium dermaroller to stimulation production of elastin, tighten pores and reduce wrinkles depth. Use it with a serum with either vitamin A, Vitamin C/DMAE, peptides or growth factors – SkinMedica TNS Recovery Complex or Essential Serum give amazing results after needling your skin!

Editor’s Letter (05.11.10)
Bonfire Night combines everything I love about autumn… Wrapping up warm in layers of cashmere, the sweet, smoky scent of the air, the anticipation as bangs, flashes, and glitter fill the sky. I’m not usually one to sign up for seasonal makeup trends, but I do love a bit of sparkle on the 5th November. There is, however, one important rule to abide by if you want to remain stylish and sophisticated - pick one product and stick to it. Wearing sparkly lipstick, eyeshadow, liner, and base at the same time is not a good look. I always find it hard to choose – but my favourite way to wear sparkle is with a glitter-infused eyeliner. Draw a line across the top lash line, finishing with a feline flick, then carefully trace underneath your lower lashes to finish. Voila - a flutter worthy of the night sky!
Natthakur. I have fallen head over heels for this sweet-bag inspired makeup bag (£28), designed by hot new London-based leather designer Nat Thakur. It’s hard to find high quality leather accessories at such affordable prices – especially when you consider the level of craftsmanship involved. Her designs are fun and very witty – I also love the shoulder bags designed to look like plastic bags and paper bags (in butter soft leather, of course) (from £65). I urge you to check out her online store. www.natthakur.co.uk
Movember. It’s November – and for a lot of men, the month ahead will involve an attempt to grow a moustache! The charity event – known as Movember - aims to raise awareness of men’s health issues, particularly prostrate cancer. Founded in 2003, the charity has raised a staggering £60 million to date. If your man is struggling with his new facial hair, buy him one of these Moustache combs from Kent Brushes (just £2.55, with £1 from each sale being donated to Movember). www.kentbrushes.com
Imedeen. My favourite beauty supplement brand Imedeen has just launched Hair and Nails capsules - a targeted formulation of silica, biotin and B-vitamins that get to the root of strong, shiny hair and nails. I have just finished a month’s course - and whilst the result aren’t dramatic (I’d need to continue the course to see the best results), I am convinced that my hair has a new glossy shine and my nails are starting to feel stronger (they are usually paper thin). I recommend adding them to your beauty regime. www.imedeen.co.uk
UNE. I use mineral powder foundation on a daily basis – so when my pot ran out unexpectedly last week, I headed to my beauty cupboard for a replacement. I discovered UNE’s 100% Mineral Powder Foundation (£9.99), dashed to the nearest mirror, and haven’t looked back since. The texture has a more velvety texture than my regular brand, blending into skin easily - it even appeared flawless in dry areas (which isn’t always the case with mineral powder). I’m thrilled to have discovered it. www.boots.com
Kate Moss. Kate Moss’ final collection for Topshop is online now – and I love nothing more than this beautiful Gold Stars chain (£15). It’s pretty, feminine, yet perfectly on trend, with the stars strung on a delicate 16” chain. Typically, the necklace is sold out, so I will be keeping my eyes peeled on the site over the coming weeks. It would look fabulous worn with a little black dress over the festive season. Please Santa, if you are listening, I would be very happy to find this in my stocking. www.topshop.com
Feature: BEAUTY HABITS OF BRITAIN (05.11.10)
Where do you live in the UK? And how does that affect your beauty spending? This week, we’ve taken a look at the national statistics to find out…
LONDON
Women in London demand hard-working, lasting products which will take them from the morning commute, to the office, to an evening out – all without budging. Londoners are prepared to splash the cash on quality brands so long as they offer value.
Kate James, Head of Buying for QVC Beauty (brand new on television channel 658) explains, “Whether it’s a slick of lipstick before the office party or a new skin regime after the winter blues, beauty products have the power to make people feel good about themselves. With more disposable income, modern women are savvier beauty shoppers than ever, getting the best prices from their products and learning the best ways to use them before anything even touches their skin.”
If there’s one thing the demanding female consumer knows, it’s mascara, with QVC’s Cost of Female Beauty Survey 2010 finding that women in the UK apply 16 million sweeps of a mascara wand each day. We want clump free, flake-proof lash definition which extends and volumizes. With this in mind, it comes as little surprise that Debenhams report mascara as being one of the top selling products in their Oxford Street flagship beauty hall. Check out Smashbox Lash DNA Mascara, £20.25 (www.qvcuk.com) for an innovative, lengthening double helix wand or Urban Decay’s bestselling Skyscraper Multi-benefit Mascara, £14.50 (Debenhams Nationwide).
In terms of skincare, the urban environment can take its toll - so a thorough, yet time-efficient regime is a must-have. A bottle of Liz Earle’s cult Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser, £11.50 for 100ml (www.lizearle.com) sells every 30 seconds in the UK and if that wasn’t a sufficient claim to fame, it’s also the top selling beauty product in John Lewis London, offering a winning combination of visible results and value for money. It’s not surprising that a natural product features as a bestseller in the Capital - as it’s in 80% of all organic beauty purchases occur in London, according to figures from So Organic (www.soorganic.com).
NEWCASTLE & THE NORTH
Women in the North of England are the beauty bargain hunters of the UK, reportedly spending the least on beauty annually, on average £567 per year. However, that’s not to say that beauty isn’t important to them, with over 37% stating that they wouldn’t leave the house without wearing makeup.
Possibly inspired by Geordie idol, Cheryl Cole, false eyelashes are one of Newcastle’s top beauty sellers, according to Debenhams. The influence of celebrity on beauty purchases shouldn’t be underestimated - as sales of red hair dye have soared recently as a way of recreating celebrity locks, with 57% of women in the UK opting for coloured or highlighted hair.
“Cheryl dabbled with red last year but this time around she has gone much more vibrant in tone, opting for a rich, velvet red shade which is very autumnal. Red is a bold colour, which always makes a statement and as a colour palette, encompasses a very broad spectrum from pale amber or rich terracotta through to vibrant ruby or scarlet hues. Anyone can wear red but it’s about finding the right red for you. Warmer skin tones can opt for copper reds whilst cooler skin tones should stick to cooler shades such as ruby or cranberry. Bear in mind that red is a high maintenance colour and fades fast so maintain your look with Wella Professionals SP Color Save Shampoo and Conditioner and give coloured hair an extra shine boost with an intensive mask like Wella Professionals SP Shine Define Mask once or twice a week,” advises Christel Lundqvist, Wella Professionals’ UK Colour Ambassador at HOB Salons (for further details visit www.systemprofessional.co.uk).
The average UK woman owns over three different types of shampoo and conditioner, possibly due to the desire for newness, trying out offers or seeking to treat different hair requirements. Unilever report that sales of their Dove Colour Repair Therapy Shampoo, £2.59 for 250ml (Boots nationwide) are highest in the North. Look out also for their brand new Dove Colour Radiance Shampoo, £2.69 for 200ml (as before).
MIDLANDS
There’s nothing mediocre about women’s approach to beauty in the Midlands. According to research conducted by Mintel, outside of London, it’s women in the East Midlands who spend the most on their beauty regime. The Unilever ‘Beauty in Numbers’ survey found that women in the West Midlands spend the most time getting ready in the morning, taking up to two hours and 20 minutes.
David Walker-Smith, Selfridges’ Director of Beauty explains, “It is not a surprise that beauty spend has doubled in the last decade. Beauty sales have gone up year on year at Selfridges and customers are more informed and very discerning. Confidence has also grown so we’ve seen not only a rise in the classic beauty favourites but also increased demand for newer niche brands.” Their top sellers, across their four UK branches (in London, Manchester and Birmingham) include cult classics such as YSL Touche Éclat, £24 (which famously sells somewhere in the world every twenty seconds), Bare Escentuals Get Started Kit and Chanel Rouge Noir Nail Varnish with predictions for future classics sited as Tom Ford Beauty, Luminess Airbrush Tanning and Bare Rare Minerals Skincare.
Haircare is also key in the UK, with Unilever reporting that 23% of UK women blow dry their hair at least once a week and 43% use styling products. Student Adele Foster, who lives in Derby describes the key to her look, “I like volumising hair products and those by TiGi Bedhead (www.tigihaircare.com) & John Frieda (Boots nationwide) are amongst my favourites. I have fine, flyaway hair which isn’t helped by the Midlands weather and I find these products work well to control it, give it more body and make it look fuller.”
LIVERPOOL
Women in Liverpool are recognised for being immaculately groomed. It’s possible that the Euro influence of the City’s footballers has had an impact, as big hair rules - be it a modern twist on the ‘60s beehive a la Coleen Rooney or suffering in rollers in the quest for bounce and volume – and Debenhams report top sales of fake tan in Liverpool.
It’s not all about the surface impression, however, as Liver Birds love to indulge in pampering treatments. Crystal Clear hails from Liverpool, with their iconic signature treatment, Crystal Clear Microdermabrasion, from £50 (www.crystalclear.co.uk) proving the most popular at their skincare clinic. The treatment, which reportedly counts Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow as fans, bombards skin with a stream of finely ground crystals for a gentle yet thorough exfoliation, which leaves skin looking youthful, with a refined texture. Also recommended for acne scarring, pigmentation, sun damage blocked pores, fine lines and wrinkles, the treatment boosts circulation, stimulates collagen production and improves lymphatic drainage and together with exfoliation, comprises a soothing mask.
Liverpudlians, like many in the UK, aren’t afraid of going under the knife in their quest for beauty perfection - and cosmetic surgery is now seen as the norm, rather than the exception. According to leading cosmetic surgery provider, The Hospital Group (www.thehospitalgroup.org), between 2009 and 2010, there was an 85% increase in treatments. Liposuction proved to be the most popular treatment and it’s not just women who rate beauty as a priority, with men increasingly looking to the treatment to perfect their bodies.
Medical Director of Aesthetic Surgery at the Group, Dr. Mario Russo explained that such procedures no longer hold such a taboo amongst men, “We are seeing an increasing number of men who don’t have the time to achieve such amazing body results by just hitting the gym. Lots of celebrities are turning to cosmetic surgery to fix imperfections and men are no longer scared to strive for the same body shape.”
YORKSHIRE
Almost three quarters of British women view cosmetics as a daily essential, not a luxury purchase, and over half claim that the recession has had little or no impact on their beauty spending. However, lipstick sales are proven to increase during a recession. It’s also one of the key pieces to achieving this season’s ladylike trend and it’s reported by QVC’s Cost of Beauty survey that nearly 2,400 miles of lipstick are used in the UK each day, the distance from London to New York!
In Sheffield’s Meadowhall Shopping Centre, classic, empowering red lipstick is the top selling beauty item. For the ultimate pillar-box red, try Clinique’s High Impact Lip Colour SPF15 in Red-y to Wear, £15 (www.clinique.co.uk).
Author, Jessica Bradburn offers an insight, “My part of the world- North Yorkshire, Harrogate to be precise, is where town meets country - so while the ladies who lunch often carry It bags picked up in Harvey Nicks or one of the uber-chic boutiques in Harrogate or Ilkley, they are more likely to be teamed with a pair of fur-lined boots or even wellies during the day for the school run or the deli dash. I’d say this holds true for beauty as well as fashion. Northern cities have compact centres where you’re much more likely to bump into people you know (compared with London). I would never dream of popping to the supermarket without makeup on at home - the checkout girls wear enough smoky eye to shame a Kardashian and it’s the provinces - women are often stay-at-home and have the time to be groomed.”
NORTHERN IRELAND
According to the Unilever ‘Beauty in Numbers’ survey, women in Northern Ireland own the most beauty bounty - on average 45 products, with foundation reported as a top seller. It’s a product that women view as a can’t-live-without item - be it in cream, powder or liquid form, with nearly four thousand litres of foundation being used by women in the UK every day- enough to fill nearly seven thousand pint glasses… that’s a lot of Guinness!
According to research conducted by QVC, women use on average four bottles of foundation a year, with 52% applying the product daily, and taking sixteen minutes a day to complete their makeup.
Revlon know a thing or two about foundation. Their Colorstay foundation, £11.73 (0800 085 2716) was the very first long-wear foundation to hit the market in the 1990’s, featuring on the News at 10! Jessica Alba is a huge fan. The brand’s current bestseller is PhotoReady foundation, £12.99 (as before) a lightweight, light reflective base of which Gucci Westman, Revlon Global Artistic Director and Celebrity Makeup Artist, says “I love the formula, it has a luminous finish with really superb coverage. I collaborated on the development of this foundation so the texture is everything I love in a base.”
The figures highlight the importance placed on a flawless base and Aiveen Flanagan, professional musician concurs, “I’m a performer so looking and feeling good are important for my work. I’ve tried various skincare and makeup brands and now stick with those I know work well with my skin & on days off I let my skin breathe. Regular exercise and sipping water throughout the day also help my skin glow and look healthy.”
