ZOOM! What happens: I’ve always dreamt of a gleaming white smile, but years of red wine and tea drinking has done nothing but yellow my teeth. I was a bit nervous about teeth whitening, as it seemed rather drastic – but as soon as I entered No. 1, Harley Street, my apprehension disappeared. I was greeted warmly by Dr Simon Darfoor – and, as he checked my teeth, we chatted about my expectations for the treatment. He described the teeth whitening methods he offers - detailing who they are aimed at, how the processes work on a scientific level, and the results they will bring. He showed me colour examples of three teeth from his extensive library – one that was the shade of my own teeth, one that was three shades lighter, and one that was six shades lighter. We agreed I’d go for six shades lighter, which involved a two-stage whitening process. I settled into the chair, noted the pleasant view from the window over Cavendish Square, and opened my jaws wide whilst Simon fitted the mouth guard. He applied a gel to protect my gums from the bleach - happily chatting away to me as he worked, despite the fact that I was physically unable to answer! He then coated my teeth in clear peroxide gel, whilst explaining its ability to burn through a thin rubber glove - eek! Reassuringly, I felt nothing bar a slightly cold sensation. From inches away, a UV light was shone directly onto my teeth. I closed my eyes for 15 minutes and let the chemicals work their magic as jazz tunes filled the room. Simon then removed the peroxide and reapplied another coat. 15 minutes later the treatment was over and my mouth was my own again. Results: My teeth are now impressively whiter, yet in a natural way - not Simon Cowell bling-tastic, but just what I wanted. Many friends have commented on my lovely pearly whites and the colour has encouraged me to steer clear of the red wine and tea so far - that’s six days and counting!
