THE SALT CAVE, TUNBRIDGE WELLS, KENT Visited by Louise Emma Clarke What it promises: The Salt Cave has two clinics nationwide – the original location in South West London, and a new location in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. The chamber reproduces the microclimate of a natural Salt Cave using a special medical device. Patients sit in the room and breathe normally, whilst negative ionized salt particles work their way into the respiratory system, reaching even the deepest part of the lung (alveoli). After one hour, patients feel their respiratory system is cleaner and clearer. Salt therapy helps a vast range of conditions, including asthma, chronic bronchitis, coughs, sinus problems, ear infections, psoriasis, rhinitis, hay fever, allergies, cystic fibrosis, tonsillitis, and eczema. What happens: I suffer from mild asthma and recurring sinus problems, so I was keen to visit The Salt Cave when I heard it had opened in my hometown of Tunbridge Wells, Kent. After arriving, I was asked to cover my shoes with plastic bags and place a net over my hair (to keep the cave hygienic). I was then lead into the cave, where a staff member sat next to me to explain the benefits of the treatment, before leaving me to my own devices. The cave itself looked like a snow grotto – with a thick layer of powder-white salt on the floor, salt covering the walls, and flickering lanterns scattered around. The room was instantly relaxing – I can’t quite explain the science, but I was more than happy to put my feet up onto the foot rest, open my book, and sit back to enjoy the peaceful ambience for the next hour. When I arrived in the cave, I had a blocked nose – but as the minutes ticked away, I felt the pressure ease and airways slowly re-open. After an hour, the lights came on to alert me that the hour was up. I made my way out of the cave, removing the plastic bags and net in reception. The Results: To notice real benefits, The Salt Cave recommends that a course of sessions is booked (the specific number relates to each condition, which the company will advise when you book). One treatment, therefore, wasn’t enough to report a huge change in my overall health – but I did instantly notice an instant improvement to my sinuses, which stayed clear until late that evening and felt more comfortable for well over a week. If it can do that in an hour, I can only imagine the power it can have over a course of treatments – and the countless reviews I’ve read from (extremely) happy customers are testament to that. Price: First session is free (call for details). Thereafter, one-hour sessions cost £35, with discounts offered if you book a package of 10 or more.
